I have a pair of bedside lamps that one of them needed the pull chain replaced. The original pull chain was string type and finally after years of pulling on and off, it started showing the wear and tear and began to fray. The fraying started a while ago and I was procrastinating about replacement, but now it was to a point that it was going to snap at any time, and it was time to replace. I was debating on replacing the lamp rather than spend the money to repair and I decided to repair it. I dropped it off on a Saturday afternoon and woman said it would be ready by Monday. I wasn't expecting it to be replaced so quickly. The cost of the replacement socket--the pull chain couldn't be replaced on its own--was $9.50, reasonable. The labor though was $28, and the total cost was almost $40. While I could have just purchased a new bed lamp for less than that, considering the alternative was having an otherwise good lamp go to landfill. I thought it was worth it price and now my lamp will last many more years. If you have lamp repairs, I would definitely bring it to Carlos Lighting for repair and support this local Mom and Pop business. read more

Don't ever go here! They lie and cheat. They lose your stuff. I brought a lamp in to be fixed. The lamp worked before I went there. Only the switch needed to be repaired. The man quoted me $7 for the part and $25 for labor. I thought that was expensive, but I left it. He said it would be ready in 3 days. I went back 5 days later and it wasn't ready. Then I went back 1 week later and it still wasn't ready. They finally called me to.pick it up. They lost the bulb and gave me a cheap replacement. They repaired it with a used part and then charged me $56!!! When I told them that was outrageous the wife started yelling at me. They are I credibly rude and a rip off! Don't go here. read more

Yeah we got our old lamp from the 70's fixed. The switch finally broke after a while. The family that runs this place are super nice. They had our lamp fixed within one day! Our cost was $40 to put in new wires and a socket with a key switch instead of a plastic switch. You really get quality here and the chance to save a lamp you really love. How do you change a light bulb? I'm a long time resident of San Carlos and I have 4 exterior light fixtures across the front of my house using the same sizes and wattage of bulbs. Nothing unusual but recently a bulb burned out and the socket's porcelain needed replacement as well as the bulb. I couldn't find a replacement anywhere locally. The owner, Freeman, fixed it and I picked it up the next day. His replacement socket had a height adjustment. I had never seen one. A quiet spot for lamps and lamp repair. We had a lamp with a broken pull chain that needed repair and the lamp went in on a Saturday and was ready Monday. Quick service with a friendly atmosphere. Repair was completed as requested with a new lamp cord plug as well. Although the color of the replacement bulb socket (bright brass) was not the same as the rest of the lamp (hidden by the lampshade anyway), Freeman went beyond the ordinary repair just replacing the one pull and socket and ended up doing both, making them match so that the pull chains were esthetically the same instead of different colors. Total bill was over $50 and for the quick turnaround, the extra thought that went into the repair and that this was a local-owned, friendly shop, I highly recommend it. read more

The BF's favorite lamp finally died after 20 years. He was crushed. Dropped the lamp off at Carlos Lighting on a Saturday around 10:30 am. Picked it up after 3pm the same day! The socket, switch, and cord are brand spanking new and they even cleaned the lamp up for us! We also upgraded to a 3 way switch to boot! Couldn't be happier. Got a beautiful brass lamp in Morocco. But the electrical gauge doesn't fit America system, plus it was poorly made. I took it to the store, the nice man (I should have asked his name) looked at it, asked me some questions, then wrote me a quote with detailed listing, cord is $6.50, switch is $3.50.... labor is $35, total comes to $54. It's very honest, straightforward and fair. I have contacted other people I found on Yelp, this man is the most professional and charges the least. Fast too, next day service! I was so happy when I got my lamp, not only I could use it now, it was done beautifully and perfectly! I'll go to him if I ever have any lamp issue again. He is the guy! I bought several antique floor lamps from the 1920s on ebay and needed them repaired. This shop replaced the lightbulb fixture portion of both lamps. I wanted a pull-down chain to turn the lamp on/off on one of the units, which was constantly breaking over time since pulling on the chain would break the spot where the bulb is screwed in on the lamp. This was the 3rd shop I had work on this lamp. The owner found a better quality part for the lamp that does not break after I told him the problem I was having with the lamp. This shop seems to really know what they are doing when it comes to repairing lamps. I have had no problems with the lamp since he fixed it. read more

Unfortunately I will never go to this shop again. My kids and some friends ( all 4 and under) were playing on the street in front of this business and the adjacent shops, after having frozen yogurt 2 doors down. The owner (female) came out and screamed at my kids, told them they were blocking her business and preventing customers from coming in. I apologized and assured her that anytime a pedestrian walked by (few had) I herded the kids to one side to allow them to pass freely. She continued her rant and I said, fine, we will stay away from the sidewalk in front of her shop. She continued to spout off in a nasty manner, so I told her that I had previously shopped with her, and that I wouldn't be back. She said she didn't care, so I guess she doesn't care about her old customers, just new ones who may not be able to muscle their way past toddlers to get in her door. read more

If I could give this shop 10 stars I would!!! Owner is a true craftsman, unlike the big box stores. I was looking for a larger lamp shade, and he had a silk one that was perfect, that he actually hand made himself!! His prices are so reasonable as well. He can rewire anything to make it into a lamp, fixes lamps and is so knowledgeable about this industry. It is too bad that when he retires, there is no one else on the Peninsula to take his place. My father finally gave in and let me have an old 40s style Tiffany lamp that was just taking up space at his house. The lamp had the original wiring and I wanted to be able to actually use it so we took it to Carlos Lighting to see if it could be rewired. Not only was the owner able to rewire it but the cost was very reasonable, and it was done all in the same day. The owners were very pleasant and the male owner certainly knows his way around antique lamps! We dropped the lamp off around 10:30 and he said it would be ready after 3:30. We showed up around 3:30 and sure enough, the lamp was rewired and ready to go. We were both impressed at the level of service, the professionalism and the friendliness of the two owners. Freeman and Amy run Carlos Lighting. Freeman rewired an antique lamp that I had previously paid to have rewired in the South bay, and he did a fine job fixing it. So I asked him if he could make me a chandelier. I had a box of Murano glass pieces (hand blown by artisans in Venice) from a chandelier that had fallen onto a slate floor in someone's home. Freeman was able to use the intact pieces and incorporate them with new brass and glass pendants. He even hung it for me in my living room. The chandelier is gorgeous. I took two Restoration Hardware lamps (and I won't buy another Restoration lamp) with short-circuited sockets; one had a dimmer switch, the other was standard. I added a request to convert the standard to dimmer and it was done perfectly and was ready in 48 hours. The lamps were heavy brass base and were very heavy. The owner carried the lamps to my car.
