Steak and Enchiladas with black beans and fajita veggies! So good!
    Rich B.

Excellent! Had the steak and enchiladas, steak was cooked perfectly, the salsa was awesome, and their guacamole wow! Came here after Illinois State vs Iowa softball game! Glad we stopped in! Our waitress was so polite and on point!

The bag of disgustingly stale chips we got.
    Nikki S.

Well, I ordered today, the food was mostly not even edible. The chips were so stale they are hard (date on the bag is 2 days from now, same with salsa and cheese dip), I don't know when they make up this stuff ahead of time, but they were NOT fresh, gross and chips, salsa and cheese dip is not cheap, over $10 just for that stuff alone. My Sancho was burnt and flat and just gross, barely anything in it. My side was refried beans, they came in a SMALL tablespoon solo cup (like ranch would come in), hardly even a side. Ordered churros, they are so hard you cannot even pull them apart. One of the most disgusting meals I've ever had. I used to like Carlos, but this horrible. I don't know what they did, but they better be making some changes. I guess I'll eat my salsa with some Tostitos chips I have here. Skip this place.

    Chips & Queso to go.

Over salted and over cooked chips. The chips & salsa used to be the highlight of our afterwork treats. But as time passes the chips continue to disappoint (as much as I wish they wouldn't). Their quality sure has tanked since the old Carols in Iowa City was torn down. Don't even get me started on what used to be a pound of chips & pint has become a few chips in a bag & pint.

    Burnt fajita
    LeAnn S.

If I could leave a zero I would. The shrimp/steak fajita was the absolute worst. First it came to the table and you couldn't see the veggies and it only covered half the plate. Once we turned the food over the veggies that were there were burnt also making the meat taste burnt as well. The manager offered to have another plate made but by then the service was bad, the food was bad, so we decided to go somewhere else. The raspberry margarita very sweet with little alcohol. My chicken chimichanga was so spicy I couldn't eat it. The manager was somewhat rude and never apologized for the food. We sent the fajita back without eating or having another plate. Then we got the bill and the fajita was charged so we asked to see the manager. Then took off the fajita brought the bill and again no apology. Attached is a picture of the the burnt mess, nothing was eaten just mixed around. Good luck with this place. We won't be going back

Baja chicken wrap was pretty dry last time.. but the queso and margs are always good!
    Bee H.

Ever since the new renovation, it's been a hit or miss. Usually it's alright, but sometimes food and service could be a lot better. The queso is still very good, but one time I got the marg chicken fajitas but they forgot the most important marg sauce for the fajitas.. The food portion seems to have gotten smaller but it is sometimes still good. The baja chicken wrap is sometimes good but sometimes super dry and lacking in flavor. I will still go now and then for the jumbo margs and queso, but I wish the food and service can be consistent!

We got a quick lunch, we split one of their quesadillas, and it was great. The service was amazing as well.

Food was very good, with decent sized servings. The best part of our visit was our waiter, Colton. He was so friendly and helpful.

What I mean by that is, it does not look like a Mexican restaurant. But it EXCELS at Mexican cuisine. I highly recommend ordering anything you'd see at a Mexican restaurant. The drinks: The Blueberry Fields drink was good but pricey given the size and wasn't "blueberry" enough for my husband. I liked it, but I'd want it by the mason jar, and that would be super expensive. I had the hibiscus margarita and it was *very* enjoyable. The food: My husband had the Des Moines Po' Boy. I wish he would have realized that he was basically getting a sub. He liked the soft bread. Overall though, he wasn't impressed. He said it was kind of bland. But he loved the fries and ranch. I had the puerco en salsa verde--this dish is incredible! Really tender chunks of pork in a rich tomatillo salsa verde with beans and rice. The only thing that could be better is if there were 3 fresh corn tortillas instead of 2. There is so much rich, delicious, saucy pork to eat, that you need 3 to enjoy it all. The tortillas are fresh made too. So yummy! In summary: Go here and enjoy all the Mexican dishes!

If you are familiar with an old Iowa City bar called the mill, there are pieces of there here The food was plentiful and tasted great. I had the brisket po boy tender cooked brisket and a tasty BBQ sauce The totally was under 40 for two of us.

The environment is not clean; the surfaces are covered in dust and grime. My menu had not just wet water on it from wiping but the water was brown ... cleaning does not count if it's with dirty water. There was a hair in my quesadilla. The waitress really didn't handle it well. She kind of said she was sorry and giggled not in a rude way but just awkwardly. She wasn't going to take it off the ticket ... I didn't think I needed to ask since I had just started eating it, found the hair, and asked for her to take it away. When I did ask, she did take it off the ticket. I only gave a 2 because my husband actually liked his food. Both of us agreed however, we would not return. I get this is a college town restaurant, but cleanliness is still important.

I remember this as "one eye Jake's" to date myself from the early 2000s. I just missed happy hour, but it goes on from 3 to 6 Monday through Friday. I believe includes half-price appetizers and I think they might have a taco special too. They have basic street style tacos, which were delicious at three dollars apiece at regular price. The chorizo stood out and the Barbacoa was very good way better than what you find at chipotle. The revamping the menu and have a new Mexican chef and from what I saw I want to come back for the food alone. I've traveled to Cabo San Lucas, and even lived in Mexico, and this is the real deal - made by an authentic Mexican chef from Morales. The queso was dope with real white cheese. Super cool bartender. And even though my days of standing in line at the club are over, the set up was just like I remember it with two levels - so if you're gonna go, have a good time, just make sure not to be a D bag bro. Cheers.
