Came in on a thursday night to watch NFL with my man, wasn't too packed and upon arrival I did my little research before coming in, and that was to order at that bar (We decided to seat at the bar) and get the food to the table. Now I know it's a hit or miss when it comes to services from the other reviews that people left, but our bartenders was wonderful and helpful. I forgot to asked for her name and I believe she was training a guy to work there at the night we went. I tried my boyfriend drink, he got a Guinness and it wasn't my cup of tea so I asked if they do fruity cocktails and she said yes. Made me a version of 'Sex on the beach' and it was really good. 10/10 for me. Definitely coming back for that drink or when she's working. Food wise, the wings were really good, I asked for the sauce on the side since I don't like soggy wings. We got buffalo sauce, it comes with a small portion of celery and carrots. 10/10 would recommend to get. I ordered the fish and chips, 8.7 /10 only thing I wish it had was some peas LOL. The fish was crispy and flakey, hot and so was the chips. The dish also had a little bed of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. Refreshing after a heap of fry foods. The vibes were chill, it wasn't too crowded or loud, only one group that was next to us was a bit loud but I didn't mind. After all this is a pub. I saw a post in the hall that they also do trivia nights and thought that was rad too! Overall, they get 5 stars for great services and food was delicious (Just don't get their burgers) Can wait to get back here for another drink. read more

If you want a pub, you got a pub! In my experience pubs can be a little intimidating but everyone was welcoming and ready to enjoy there day on this side of the soil. Music was great the entire time i was here, pool table rockin' and surprisingly super clean. I ordered the fish n chips because ... well who cares i just wanted to try something different and pubs usually have great fish and chips. Slammed it with vinegar some salt and pepper and boom! Local bar in the area. Not really sure what kind of crowd this place is supposed to attract when I came here on a Wednesday evening for a casual business meetup. There was no one greeting when you walk in, so I just sat myself at an open table. I was on my phone for about 5 minutes before a staff member decided to approach me and ask if I wanted anything. Service is very laidback as you could imagine. Don't expect anyone to come back on you. It was best to go to the bar if you want something. Food-wise, typical bar food. Most of the items appear to be frozen items that they can quickly throw in the fryer or prepare with minimal effort. Not going to get into the details here as its just chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks. read more

I'm pretty disgusted. I ordered the Fish & Chips for delivery through Grub Hub. Gave address, said 10 to 20 min for delivery. Then confusion as Marion had as pick up. Told me to cancel & reorder. Grub Hub couldn't do that. So Marion Square Pub got $21.95 ,including a 2.20 tip. And I got no dinner. I'm totally appalled & disgusted. So, why couldn't it be adjusted for delivery? I called again & the male I spoke with would not confer what the woman earlier said to cancel & reorder. Rather rudely. I will NEVER order or recommend Merion Pub. Not rocket science, if in error why couldn't it be changed to delivery? Hard to believe this is 2024! They not only stole my money, offered nothing to assure customer satisfaction. read more

Wow this place sucks. This may be the worst bar in the neighbourhood. From the lack of ventilation/air conditioning, to the disgusting food and piss poor service. I've tried to get it my all about five times now. Each time a nightmare. I was going to let it slide, but my experience watching the football two weeks ago was the last time I could keep my mouth shut. We walk in, it's crowded. No problem. The place stinks like usual. Flies are everywhere, but okay whatever our friends are here let's check it out. There are two bartenders and maybe one waitress? Not sure because she wasn't busing anything just standing behind the bar ignoring customers. Eventually we had to lean half way across the bar to get another bartender's attention. She seemed tired and over all of it. No shade - the football is on and everyone is aggressively screaming at the tvs. We get our drink and eat some of our friends food. But it stops at one fry because they're mushy and gross despite coming out 10 minutes ago. The penultimate final straw was when the tvs started going out around the bar during the last 2 minutes of a tight game. It started first in my section. We were hollering for some help because the tv was literally counting down to shut. Then it started in the section next to us, then 3 minutes later the section next to them. So in a sports pub, during the literal final of this game where EVERY member of the bar was there to see the tvs were just shutting off and everyone was screaming at the staff and the staff was taking their sweet time to find the remotes. THIS IS THE BARE MINIMUM YOU COULD DO FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS. All the tvs are shut except two in the front. Everyone is screaming. People start swarming to the middle of the bar and the staff was still taking its sweet time moseying over to turn on the tvs. I get that it's annoying but people were calling you over during the countdown. You should have done it then instead of ignoring everybody. And of course, no apology. Nothing. Really. Not even a joke apology. The final straw -- when the game was over, one guy started SCREAMING in people's faces. Telling them to go fuck themselves and how they should eat shit. It was so WEIRD! He was sitting by himself and started running up to group and just SCREAMING at the top of his lungs. The bar staff did NOTHING. One staff member pointed him out to the other and started LAUGHING. I had to step in when he started screaming at us. Wth?? This place is a joke, and I haven't even gotten into the four other times I've come here. There are many other bars down the block with better food, and better staff, and better prices. Do yourself a favour and skip it, unless you're a sucker for pain. read more

Came here for a 1pm Eagles game. It also coincided with the New York marathon, so I believe it was busier than usual with the race just a few blocks over. The inside was great with various art listed. Lots of places to sit including tables and high tops that look like whiskey barrels, but it was very hard to find a seat. We should have come in a bit earlier. I think they were understaffed, but all the service was very friendly and didn't show stress to their guests. Bar was prompt but the kitchen was on a 45 min wait with the crowd. You order everything at the bar (no waitress) and they sort of find you with your order. We all got Philly cheesesteaks with curly fries. The fries were great, but the cheesesteak was lacking some meat. I enjoyed the added peppers on them, even if it's not on a classic cheesesteak. I went here on a whim on my own after getting my nails done nearby. The vibe was very much a bar/pub scene. I asked the bartender what her fave drinks were and she made me a great drink! Very kind and friendly. I then ordered a Shepard's pie which was nice and warm but taste-wise pretty disappointing. Thankfully there was salt on the table because it definitely needed more flavor. Review Number 200. FINALLY! This was one of the first bars I came to when I moved to New York six or seven years ago. It became a steady favorite and I became a regular not just because I lived around the block but because there was such a communal warm feeling about coming into this place that we had dubbed it as our 'Cheers'. Also, 3 people were living in a one bedroom and this became second home. I finally made it back the other weekend. I rarely end up on the Upper East side because of the construction and don't really have any friends in the area but someone had wanted to check out the Met and that was good enough reason for me to draw them in here. The bar has been re-vamped with both decoration, more beers, more on their menu, and ski ball/pinball machines that definitely didn't exist when I was a regular. New deals as well with a free burger with the purchase of a beer. And its not too shabby of a burger. What I was most impressed though with is seriously their beer selection that encompasses two walls. I was so mesmerized that it took me ten minutes to decide. I would be in trouble for happy hour if I still lived near by because almost everything on tap has some kind of deal. There's a pbr/shot special. And if that doesn't sell you enough, deals on wells and a pitcher of beer with free wings deal. Tried it out on our recent one week visit to NYC because it was *there* on one of our times wandering around different parts of the city and we were amazed how far below the New York bar and restaurant quality we've come to expect, it was. It was almost empty on a weekday mid-afternoon. There was one table occupied with around 5 guys, perhaps workmates hanging out having lunch. They had some beers and food on the table. The first thing the 5 of us encountered was the air conditioner, which was set on a sub-arctic temperature (before global warming) and it was pounding frigid air on us like a drunken gardener with a leaf blower at the worst possible direct-hit angle. Totally ridiculous and unacceptable. Our hair was fluttering the whole time we were in there. And we were all shivering. They should at least buy a ladder and point it somewhere other than on the customers. A very friendly Russian girl bartender was the only employee we dealt with and she was painfully slow and didn't seem to focus in particularly well and got a baffled look a few times while we were ordering food and booze. The food was really mediocre, the booze just okay, the whole experience poor because even with almost no customers everything took an eternity and I had to get up and walk to the bar to start getting the process of getting our check out of restaurant quicksand. read more

Merrion Square is three now instead of four stars. My daughter enjoyed her Wrap. That's about all. I didn't want to complain about my food. I was hungry. The Fish was not really hot and crunchy like in the past. It had the texture of frozen fish fillet heated. The food was bland. No salt brought to the table. Plus you go to the bar to order now. The sweet potato fries were always my favorite anywhere. Today we were waiting for our food to come out and actually smelled something burning. I said to my daughter I hope that's not our lunch. Yup, it must have been my Fries. My daughter said hers were overcooked too. I would lower them down to two stars but my daughter said "what do you expect? This is really not a good lunch place". I guess when people are drinking they'll eat anything. I'm not sure what has changed. Maybe a new cook. The Saturday afternoon bartender is Murph now. I had been there so much I bonded with Colin. He moved to Florida. It was my understanding that prices in this neighborhood would go up now that the Q Train stop is across the street. Plus the bus stops there too! I doubt Merrion Square is going to survive without some creative marketing. The showing of art work for sale is a great come-on. I hope my photos will draw in buyers and customers. For now I'll have my Saturday memories of enjoying my quiet lunch and watching Notre Dame Football or a hockey game while crunching on my fries and fish sticks. I'm confused by the negative reviews. This is a great easy going place to visit when you get off the train after work. The beer is a little expensive but they have cheap well drinks during happy hour. The bartenders are all friendly and attentive and I've never had bad service here. There's actually some diversity in the crowd here which is unusual in this neighborhood. The food is pretty standard bar food (mozzarella sticks, 4 kinds of fries, burgers). They also have a really good craft beer selection on draft, and a large bottle selection. Even a few in cans such as PBR and Butternuts Pork Slap. Also on hand is a pool table, ski ball, and video games. Flat screens with all major sports packages too. Nice light wood interior. Good bartenders. Just a good bar to hang out in, not spend too much cash, and get decent food a brews. Only thing that stops me from giving it a higher rating is that they are a Philadelphia Eagles bar. I'm not a snob; you know that by now. But I guess the only reason why this isn't a five star place is because it is a PUB, and it's not supposed to be a life-changing experience! One goes to a pub to lie low, grub, watch some sports, chew the fat, and perhaps get shitfaced. Aside from profane Eagles fans and the pungence of spilt beer and malt vinegar permeating the air, this is a superb place to kick back and kick it. In a no-man's land for chill venues, Merrion Square is an oasis that provides all the benefits of a pub (casual atmosphere, low prices, hearty food, long list of domestic, craft, and imported beers, ales, and ciders) with none of the downfulls (filth, crowds, noise, degenerates, prowlers, self-conscious misogynist sports fans, Bud Lights marked up to $6 on a good day). From Mondays through Fridays, the restaurant has a RIDICULOUS deal that you can get a burger for free with the purchase of a drink. Yeah, I read that on several reviews here, but did anyone mention that a cheap ass ($4) can of Pork Slap Ale qualifies as "a drink," and that the server doesn't scowl at you when you shout that you feel like you're really getting away with something here? So I guzzled the beer and bequeathed the accompanying mushroom and onion burger to my companion. When I took a bite, the regulation sized half pounder was juicy, smoky, and bursting with toppings. The bread was soft so you could actually hold the damn thing together (though how it dribbled!). For myself, I took a chance on the fish & chips, and did not regret it. First of all, the two filets resting on a bed of crispy waffle fries amounted to wayyyy more than 10 ounces of moist, white, flaky fish meat. Second, it was HOT, and stayed hot until the last bite. Heat is essential to foods whose sole merit is being fried, so it was bliss drenched in vinegar! Also, we put in our order exactly at 4 p.m., so I made the cutoff for the $6.99 lunch price (as opposed to the not-so-bad regular far of $9.95). Just a note: there was definitely a moment when we were wondering when the food was coming out because no one else was eating at that hour (around 5 p.m. on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving), but the freshness made up for the 30-minute plus wait. It was obvious that our meals were made to order straight from scratch (or as scratch as filets of fish, 8 oz. patties, and waffle fries could ever get. Truth be told, I'd come here every weekend for lunch AND dinner, but am afraid I'll get fat as all hell. Plus, I don't follow the Eagles, so would only be watching my plate. It seems I've been coming here in lieu of dinner lately, particularly since the beer+burger is simply the best ongoing beer/burger special I've found in the city, hands down. Hefty(relatively here, folks.. it's free after all) patty that's cooked to order - none of this like 6oz. nonsense they seem to be at some other places. Plus, this place really seems to "get me"... as in, it feels like it's downtown and sort of divey, but at the same time offering a great bottled beer selection(like, you can go exhaust Pony Bar and then come here)... oh and clean facilities all around. Patrons are incredibly mixed... I've seen everything from girls nights out to dates to post-work bro crews to middle-aged groups gathering to watch the hockey game. **Note** I've only really been here during the week, so I'm not really sure what Friday-Saturday nights are like... I'm guessing they're wildly different. In any case, this place seems to know its role as the local bar, and it performs swimmingly. After work the other day, my boyfriend and I decided to explore the new neighborhood. He did the yelp-work while I went along for the ride. We arrived at Merrion Square after learning that you can get free food with purchase of beer, which is always appreciated. With an order of any draft, you get a free burger and with any pitcher, you receive an order of wings. [[Side note, it is only one free burger per person, not for every beer!]] It appears to be a dive bar from the outside and in. Then you look at the beer prices and realize you are NOT in a cheap dive bar. Beers range from 8-9$ for most drafts but at the very least they are more unique than the usual millers, shocks and buds. They do have cheap well and PBR so unless you're getting your free burger, I'd aim for that. We grabbed two drafts, placed our orders for burgers and hungrily sat in the corner to survey the land. There was a table playing card games and jenga, a arcade corner up in the front, and ample seats for the early happy hour crowd. The burgers arrived by the time we were finishing up our beer so we grabbed another round (I got well after the 9$ cider). I will say that the burgers were surprisingly good. Simple, served with lettuce, onion and tomato and sides of ketchup and mustard. The servers were friendly enough even when an annoying girl complained that she did not get 5 full beers out of the pitcher she ordered (don't be that person). However, I probably wouldn't hunker down for the long haul in this bar for more than the round or two that I wait for my food. I haven't been here in a few years. My friend lives right around the corner, and i went a few times while i was in the 'hood. It was actually pretty good! I'm surprised i haven't written about it yet. I did their burger special, which is a free burger with a beer. Well, okay! And the burger wasn't bad, i thought it would be like a burger shot or something. Sides are extra, if you want fries it's a slight up charge, not much. I was in the middle of an unusually lazy Sunday afternoon. I was up here, in the 90's to get some magazines and was about to head back toward the 80's when I saw this 'Chimay' sign outside. I really like Chimay, few have it on tap. As luck would have it my NFL team ( KC Chiefs) had just had the opening kickoff to what would be another in a long proud series of defeats. Merrion has a really good space. The TVs are big and super clear. And they didn't have a jukebox playing some nonsense while these NFL games were on.
