This place has gone downhill since being sold. My husband got a salad and it was made out of shredded lettuce! His 21 shrimp dinner had only 18 shrimp. We asked why and were told that they do it by weight for the shrimp. Asked about the salad and were told that is how they do it now, even though the menu doesn't state that. If you want good Mexican food, this is not the place for you, although that is their theme. Friendly, attentive staff, cold beer, small town bar atmosphere. Half way through my wifes dinner she found a Hair in her food. When brought to the attention of our waitress she took the food back to show someone in management as far as I could tell. Then she came back never offered a replacement (at which that point we didn't want one) and said they would take 10% off of the bill. Mixed feelings here. I like the food and location. Now on the drink and service aspect: If you draw the wrong bartender youll get weak mixed drinks... good flavored but weak. If you draw the right bartender youll do fine. Now about service at the bar. Another reviewer said it sucked. I have experienced that and can explain why i believe it occurs. Even on a friday or saturday evening during peak times they have 1 bartender where they need 2. That one bartender is making drinks for every single person in the place. They could have 65 people on a rush. The time it takes to return to bar patrons after their drink is empty...... is poor. This is management being cheap and running the bartender ragged . I don't understand why some people like this place. The portion sizes have really decreased over the past year or so. The food is unremarkable--Americanized Mexican, unimaginative and bland. Pile in if you want to have to clean your shoes off when you leave because you'll be walking along the nastiest restaurant floor I've ever seen. I honestly don't think they own a broom. The salsa is also in old parmesan containers that were stripped from their labels and reused after every meal for the next table. The chip warming machine off to the side was glass and so foggy you could barely see the crumbs of chips you're about to be completartily served, which weren't the slightest bit warm either. Aside from the grimy appearance of the restaurant, the food was absolutely horrid, we ordered a couple of tacos and sat there for about an hour until they gained the courage to put the plates down in front of us which contained 2 corn tortilla taco shells, that were probably dollar store brand, overflowing with shredded cheese and definitely not an hours worth of heat to the meat, maybe even unsafe temperature to even serve ground beef at. Tonight marks the last chance I will give this restaurant to deliver good for or service. The first time that I ate here I swore to never again because of poor quality and high priced food along with terrible service. Friends of mine urged me to give it another try which I did and had an even worse experience. the Manager who is also the bartender is as rude as they come. She acts put out if you would like to buy something and makes faces and whispers to other employees while both are eying you. On each occasion I had to sit there and listen to her complain when other customers would leave because she wasn't satisfied with the tips they left. Tonight the same friends that urged me to give this restaurant a second chance went with me to try one more time. I figure everybody has bad days right? After waiting for a seat at the bar so that we could watch the game the same bartender advised us that we need to stay at our table since we had already ordered drinks! Refusing to allow us to move to the bar? Again she complained and I did not ONE TIME witness her do anything but walk around with an angry look on her face. Our food (three cheeseburgers) took an hour to receive and when it arrived was cooked to a crisp. The only positive from the entire experience was our waitress tonight. She was very nice and on the ball. Unfortunately, it seems she has to deal with these issues regularly. We tipped her 60% on our entire bill to show appreciation as well as let the "Manager" see what she turned away at the bar. As I stated before, this is definitely the last chance I will give this establishment to deliver satisfactorily. I would urge anyone considering visiting to not waste your time or money. First off it looks like the 1970's threw up inside of here very out dated .The prices for what you get are ridiculous we paid $15 dollars for chicken fajitas that didn't come out sizzling and there was maybe 8 pieces of chicken covered in peppers and onions. Then we tried to order 2 margaritas and this old wrinkly woman came to our table and told us she couldn't serve us I was only drinking water and my boyfriend had only had a few beers she accused him of being too drunk. Most of the food is very good. The enchiladas are excellent. The sauce (they literally only have one sauce that is baked on) is incredible. I love it. The chips are ok. The salsa tastes like Paco brand- ie not good. The servers are usually attentive and nice. It is, however, way overpriced! One enchilada with cause, lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese runs somewhere around $9. At least you get as many chips as you want. They offer extras such as guacamole (not homemade), olives, etc. What they don't tell you is that each of these is an extra charge. A few (3-4) black olives adds something like 75 cents. Best Mexican in a 20 mile radius, yes its generic Mexican food, but the salsa is the best around in even perhaps a greater radius. Its the best restaurant in town, but you have to consider the town. Another location I have been fortunate to have still open after decades of dining. I love the Carl's Soft Taco. The thing has not changed in at least 30 years. It is even served on the same plates, with the same gravy, same everything. How many childhood favorites can you still get when you get old? This is one of them. For this, I cannot give less than five stars. I eat there several times a year and every time it is perfectly the way I have always remembered. The chips and salsa are just as good too. I really wanted to like this place but the food was disappointing. While the presentation was excellent, the food itself was too salty and tasted burnt. We ordered the cheese/onion enchilada and chicken burrito but could not take more than a couple bites. We also ordered the queso dip but this also was too salty. We have been going for years and have had no problem. On Saturday December 7,2013 we went their to eat and drink before the annual lighted parade. We arrived at 2:30 pm to make sure we got a table, we had at that the time 8 people in our group and had ordered food and drinks. Later another 5 of our guest showed up and we moved an empty table to our table to accommodate them and was quickly told we could not do this because other people were waiting, we understood and excepted this and put the table back. The two people who sat at that table had two extra chairs they were not using, we ask them if we could use them and they said sure. as soon as we moved these chairs for our extra guest a waitress came by and rudely grabbed the chairs, put them back and told us we could not do this, we explained to her that the people at that table offered them to us, she replied when they leave would we put them back, we told her sure we would, she said right, that's what everyone tells us. At this point my family was so upset, they left and went down the street to the Tavern. This not only embarrassed me, it angered me. The waitress was also overheard telling another person that we had been holding up the table since 2:30 pm, since when does eating and drinking constitute holding up a table. We had spent up to $200.00 among us at this point and was going to purchase more as we were watching the football games while waiting for the parade to start. with the additional family members another $100.00 would have been spent. Mind you, we had only been in there for three hours at this point so that would equate to a $100.00 per hour for that table. This has hurt me deeply because we have been going there for years, we have had class reunion meetings, parties, and have invited many people here for the first time, as a matter of fact, this was the first time my sister and her family had been here on our insistence of how good it was, this just destroyed them from ever coming here again. Now it will be the last time I ever set foot in there. What hurts the most is that I have to post this as the owner was a class mate of my wife and we have know his family for years. As far as I can see this was about how fast they could bring people in and push them out to make more money. This whole situation just ruined a good time for all that night. read more

I had a to go order last night that was very disappointing to say the least. I get to go Shredded beef burritos all the time but when I got home and opened it the burrito was only about a 1/2 an inch tall. There was hardly any beef in it at all. I don't know if they have a new cook or told the cook to size down their burritos but for $8.50 it should have been and always was before, bigger and filled with beef. I was very disappointed, I had my son and Daughter in law over and I have lived in Ida for 3 yrs and my sister has lived here for 30 yrs and my brother in law has lived here his whole live ! I have tried to really support the township and businesses!! I'm a server my self for 35 yrs now and currently working at a five star restaurant in Toledo. We put a to go order in and felt the lady on the phone was over whelm , we had asked for salsa and there was none and they had forgotten our dinner sides . So I called back and asked for the items and she argued with me that we had the salsa when it was tomatoes and then refused to give us more when I asked . So my son had to make another trip to Carl's . I know how to handle a unhappy customer and that was not it !! Carl's really dropped the ball tonight and will not be getting my business ever again !
