First time at CarMax and it was a good experience. Needed to dump my lease before my 3 years was up and they took it! First visit, I got my appraisal done within 30 minutes. Second visit, was going to sell but I needed to calculate the lease amount remaining with what they offered me. Third visit, car sold! Waiting time is hit or miss. They were pretty fast during my first 2 visits, but they third took longer then expected. They were pretty busy for a random week night. Joseph helped me with my test drive and purchase for a 2012 Mini Cooper Clubman on Thursday 1/16/2020. I didnt have an appointment so i checked in and was helped quickly for my appraisal and purchase but, granted, it was a weekday during late morning midday when we started. I would drive by this Carmax often on my way to work. They had a good and clean impression in the parking lot, lobby and desk areas. Waiting area was nice also, free coffee and wifi. It was just near where they sign paper work and present the vehicle so you're not walking all over the building during the phases of your car buying. We walked to a specific Mini I saw online. He helped me compare my top two Mini choices and I only cared to test drive my top choice because it was a rare color, had a sunroof, just hit the website that morning and only had 1 previous owner with low miles. Absolutely no complaints about the car. It was incredibly clean and ran well with no visible body damage. I bought it, got approved with Carmax Auto Finance, signed paper work and did not get maxcare at the time but HIGHLY recommend it for Minis. Joseph is super personable, patient, informative and made eye contact/smiled. It made car buying much easier and less stressful. He also knew what he was doing. Advice for buyers: -Just know exactly what you want otherwise you get googly eyed looking at all the options on the lot or at other carmax locations. Dont waste time because you'll tire yourself out and may make a lapse in judgement. -Take time looking at your prospective car, sit in it, turn the engine on, check all panels, gaps, engine, accessories, service lights, the manual, etc. -If you buy, know your employment information, emergency contact information, personal contact information and your financials (what you can afford with fees taxes and maxcare if you want). -if you're selling or trading in a car know how much you owe on it if you do owe anything or, come in with a good deposit. I had a good experience because I think I came in with the right info and paperwork, stayed within my budget and chose an appropriate car for my lifestyle. If you have a bad experience, you probably didn't ask the right questions or have the right information ready. Carmax is cool and all and moves fast but, just be careful and mindful so you're not getting into anything you're not prepared for. If you have the time to sell your car independently, then you will probably get about $1000-2000 more than their appraisal. The appraiser who helps you is usually very pleasant to work with. Up until you reach their Business Office--that's where you go once you decide you want to move forward with their appraised offer for your car. Having bedside manners is not their forte in this department. They roll their eyes and bad mouth customers who they just finished dealing with...in front of other customers without any shame. They probably deal with the same drama or questions from different customers all the time, but there is no need to show their frustration when you are in a position where you're supposed to be delivering customer service. I think it's important when the person calls to ask questions on why you want your car appraised before going in, that they should go down a list of what the customer should be prepared for and expect so that when they go to CarMax, they aren't caught off guard on the processes, especially if it's their first time dealing with CarMax. read more

I needed a new car relatively quickly after having a car loss in June. My friend referred me to Eric Bough, a sales agent, at the Carmax in Duarte so I decided to give him a call and set up an appointment. I was very stressed and nervous at the time because of the situation I was in (my previous car was in a bad collision and my passenger and I had multiple injuries) but I knew I had to get a new car relatively soon. I called Eric and made the appointment to go see him. I knew what I wanted and saw that they had the year, make and model of what I was looking at on the lot. Eric met me at the door - very friendly and VERY knowledgeable and helpful. Even though I was very stressed going there, Mr. Bough was super kind, courteous, charming and friendly when I turned in my total loss paperwork. He immediately assured me that everything would be cool and that creditors were already willing to finance me. I took the new car for a test drive, liked it and put money down soon after. Eric made the whole day a fun one! It was no haggling and non-stressful. If there were negative stars I would give this company a minus 5. My daughter had found a used toyota corolla at Carmax in Duarte. We went to this location where they pulled the car up for us to look at it. A couple red flags were the aftermarket auto parts store hubcap, (which salesman said were the stock trim), and odd paint patterns. We looked at the car and I asked to see the CARFAX report which is standardly offered free if charge by dealers. We had been to at least 6 other auto dealers by this point. CARMAX responded by saying they use an Experian based search for auto records and collision history. The Experian search revealed no major damage, but oddly lacked any service history. I requested a CARFAX report, however CARMAX does not offer this service free. So I paid the 48$ dollars for this report which detailed that the car had sustained major damage and was a total loss in 2016, in Plano, Texas. This experience showed that CARMAX is willingly not transparent with car buyers, obvious by their use of a history search that provides false information for them to use against consumers. To me this fraud, and at the very least proves unethical and dishonest activity by CARMAX. Buyers be advised. read more

This place got a facelift. It's more open, which also makes it more confusing. It's a large space with LOTS of desks. There is a single greeter, and when I arrived she was busy talking to her co-workers. When she acknowledged me and I told her I had an appointment, she had me take a seat. To which I replied, "anywhere"? And she said yes. I came to appraise my car. The process was simple. Give them your key and show them where your car is. They have someone who goes to evaluate and take pictures, which then goes to the evaluator, and they give you a printed quote. This process takes about 30 minutes. In the past, this process could take hours. The quote is good for 7 days. If you want to take them up on their offer, bring the title, your ID, and they give you a bank draft that day. You can't cash it, but you can deposit it. This process took longer than the appraisal itself. read more

Took them 3 days to fix and then they called and said that they misdiagnosed and it might be the engine. Then I took the car to bring it to the carmax I bought it from to return it and my car had a check engine and it was barely going 40mph on the freeway. They had workers who were just talking and messing around with each other and then one of the workers were rude when I was first coming into the carmax, they got mad that I didnt make room for them in an alley way to get out of their parking spot, first of all the cars parked couldn't allow for more than one car to drive through the space, secondly they went into the car and saw us coming and they didn't even have a seatbelt on but just tried to get out their spot as we were passing them. THE WORST CARMAX EVER! Do not go here to sell your car. I got an online apprised offer and decided to take my car in to get the process finished. The first visit I had, I got there as soon as they opened at 10am. They checked my car and gave me my keys back and said to wait till they called my name. An hour passed by and I went back to the desk and asked where my place was in line and they said the guy I talked to before never put my name down to wait. So then they went over my paperwork and scanned my ID and then told me my mom needed to be here because her name was on the title. (Which we had taken her off the title a few months ago) she then told me I needed to wait for my mom to get here before we can continue. I couldn't stay because I had work. The lady told me I can come back within the week and finish it up. She also told me that I didn't need to renew my registration because they would take if from my offer. So I came back four days later with my mom and we went to put my name down to wait in line and AGAIN 30 min later they said whoever I gave my name to never put me in line. Eventually they called me up which is was 5:09pm and they told me my bank has closed and they couldn't call to payoff my loan. After telling them that I've waited for a long time the girl said she can try to do it through the automated message. Which she was able to and then she told us to wait for signing which would take an hour. So we waited, 40 min later the girl comes to tell me that they can't pay off my car because the registration is not paid (which at the beginning the other girl told me I didn't need to pay it) so I told her that and she said "well we have decided to put it on the lot to sell and we need you to pay it" which by this time it was already 7pm. So I had to go to the DMV the next day, to renew my registration. I can back to carmax the following day WITH my mom and WITH my paid registration. And we put our name down to wait in line again cause that's what they told us to do. And AGAIN 30 min later I go up to the front to ask what our wait was because there were only two other families in there and they said "oh we never put your name down in line" and I just think this is VERY unprofessional, unorganized, and a huge wait of time. All the employees in the business office are not helpful. I do not recommend coming here at all. Huge waste of time. Use this place for your advantage. I had an '07 car that I was trying to sell and Carmax was the first place I took it to for an appraisal. The process was quick, about 30 minutes. I would make an appointment for this branch if you come on the weekends otherwise prepare to wait. I thought the offer was low, but the offer was still higher than what dealerships were offering. You can't compare Carmax' offer with private sellers, but I was willing to sell it to them since the process was so simple. Buying a car here is another thing though, I would be a bit more suspect. Came here once to get a price for my mom's old car (well it's not that old, it's a 2010 TSX Acura) to see if Carmax can beat the price that a car dealer was willing to offer her. My husband called ahead of time on a Sunday night around 6 pm to see if Carmax's estimate services were still available. He spoke to a nice guy on the phone and said they do estimates until 9 pm. He took our name down and we were on our way. Right when we parked and walked into the place, we were immediately greeted by an employee who directed us to this guy who would take care of us (don't recall what his name is at the moment). This guy walked outside to my mom's car and started it to get the mileage on the car. Then he walked us back inside through the special waiting room explaining that we could wait here. Then he walked passed the cashier, explaining that this is where we would go if we wanted to sell the car tonight. And lastly walked over to his office. He entered my mom's information into the computer. Since she came here before with my husband to sell an old car before, her information popped up right away. The guy who was helping us just told us that it would be up to a 45 minute wait for us to find out what Carmax would be willing to give us. He also told us that 2 of his guys will just do a brief check (check if the automatic windows work, etc). So my husband and I went back to the waiting room and used the free wifi (so awesome that there is free unprotected wifi here! It is actually pretty fast as well) and watched whatever was on, on the tv. We only waited a little less than 30 minutes to get our offer and was told it was good for up to 7 days. We were told by the guy earlier that the offer they give is a nonnegotiable offer and if we do not want to take it, then it's fine. Also we were told that if we have $5,000 or more left to pay on the car, they can take that amount out of the offer they provide us and we can get the difference. In the end, my mother did not take the offer because the car dealership she went to was willing to give her $2,000 more (better deal). Oh and by the way, my husband and I were the only ones who came. My mother was not required to be present to receive an offer, but must be present if she wanted to take the deal (which makes sense since she's the owner of the car). Overall, Carmax is friendly and pretty quick. They are easy to work with and you are not pressured into accepting their offer. Their pricing seems pretty fair. Although you may be able to get more money for your car if you try to sell it yourself, this would just be the easier way to get rid of your car if you want to cut out all of the hassle. I am surprised that the overall stars are only 3 stars (at the time of this review) for this business because they are worth at least a 4th star. I would come back here again in case I want to sell my car when it gets much older and may be ready for a new one. read more

I can see why they only have three stars. By far a not so enjoyable experience. First the sales person curves the wheel on the car I wanted to purchase. They said it was within their standards and didn't want to fix it or credit a dollar to repair it. The salesperson had no idea what he was doing. Took longer than it should have. The worst part.. THEIR INTEREST RATES. Do not even think twice about financing through them if you have good credit. Mine is above a 770 and they offered me a 8% rate through CarMax auto finance. I went to chase next door and got a 4% interest rate. Absolutely madness for a car loan. Besides that the whole encounter was just very blah.. like Surface level mediocre encounter. I only went through with purchasing the car because it was exactly what I wanted and a not so common car. Otherwise I would have walked out and not thought twice about purchasing from there. Fast forward to 10 months later - I tried to trade in my car and guess what!?!? Two reports on the carfax for damages on the car.... dealership offered me $14k less than what I bought it for 10 months ago... nothing was ever disclosed to me about the paintwork. Absolutely will never buy from Carmax again. Reading online this happens quiet often and there are several lawsuits against them. I will be honest. I am giving CarMax 2 stars because I think you can get a very reliable vehicle from CarMax. The only problem with CarMax is the service center. Let me give you all the low down . Purchase a car from here. Purchase the warranty. Make sure you get a full diagnostic check of the vehicle from CarMax when buying the car. And another one at another car mechanic company. I say this because .......their center in terms of purchasing a car is excellent . But their service center is horrible. No offense but it's true. You more than likely will not receive misinformation when purchasing the vehicle. BUT! You will receive ton loads of misinformation from the service center. Yes, they will give you a vehicle to loan when yours is in for maintenance. But!! The most important information is when and how and who is and or how the car is taken cared of . As well as how it is being repaired and when it will be completed.. A lot of misinformation comes out of the service center . That is scary because they are fixing your car . There were some people who helped . And some who misinformed . Susan and Juan Espinoza , I believe where the two helped the best. Another one, a short guy with black hair. He helped me a lot .
