Carmax has a great selection of cars from inexpensive to high end. I requested a car to be transferred and was quite impressed by the process. Everything was smooth and easy. I got an appointment request once the vehicle arrived. Once I arrived I was greeted by an associate and he showed me the car. I mentioned I had a trade and we started the appraisal process on my trade. After diving the car I was interested in seeing what kind of deal we could make. Their offer was approximately $3,000 under KBB trade in value. I politely said I think you have the wrong car and was told we only pay auction prices on trades. This would be fair if they we offering auction prices on their cars but obviously not. The associate could tell I was less than impressed with their offer and was already checked out. This was my first and last experience with Carmax. A simple take it or leave it attitude and not a care in the world if they sold this $45,000 car. Bad customer service on the phone, after appraisal I reviewed information when I got home and they had the wrong engine size on my report. I tried to speak with somebody on the phone today for more information and explanation of appraisal, waited for over 25 minutes. I received no results and wasted over 1 1/2 hours yesterday on my appraisal and 25 minutes on the phone today to get more answers. I have been buying, selling and fixing cars since I was 15. I have owned over 25 cars. Recently my stepson borrowed his grandfather's old Lexus he no longer drives and clipped a parked car going to work and a narrow side street. The Lexus was totaled. Then he borrowed my 2003 Volvo. When he got home a couple days later and I went into the garage the passenger side was crushed. It had been hit an run in a parking lot and didn't even know it happened. It was totaled too. (The 2002 Volvo it replaced in 2012 was totaled in a parking lot by an old woman who pushed the gas instead of the brake backing up. She took out 3 cars.) Car Max was great! I found a newer Volvo at another lot and they shipped it to Oxnard. The contract shipper was a flake and late getting the car there and Car Max tracked them down and had people find it. After driving the car it took about 30 minutes to buy it with no Car seller BS. You pay their asking price or not, no haggling, no bait and switch. My Mazda Miata was a fun car but just not practical for me, and I had to get something more realistic to my lifestyle. Super disappointed with this facility. Drove an hour to be told there was a problem because my middle initial wasn't on my license but was on the paperwork. Got that fixed by reapplying but now the down payment is higher. Couldn't get my Ins on the phone to add the car so I left. Went back down 2 days later with ALL info In hand....ANOTHER PROBLEM....the amount on my printed pay stub was not accurate enough for the lender. The last number of the cents was half there so they wouldn't accept it. They asked me to go to my work and print it. It was cents!!! I get that there are criteria's that are needed. If SOMEONE, ANYONE, would have sat down or even called and said....these are the things needed, these things will not be accepted, all this would have been avoided. Instead I get "sorry about that". Carmax emails are persisting that I write a review so here it is...though now they may wish that they never asked. I was looking for a particular model and year vehicle and by sheer luck, patience and persistence happened to find one on their website with very, very low miles. (One nice thing about Carmax, it's easy and free to transfer a vehicle between locations, which I did). The sales rep called me when the transfer was in process and I expressed concerns about the tires being a bit old as the car still had the original rubber on it. I was told "oh they have been changed by now. We will have your car all clean and ready for you." It arrived and first thing I look at is the DOT codes on the tires. Sure enough, they are nearly 8 years old. Within the legal limit but not exactly safe. The interior was sort of clean but nothing special and the outside had something funky on it. It looked like a huge seagull scored a hit on the door. There were big splotches of something that was starting to eat through the clearcoat to such a degree that they had to power buff the door to remove them. Not too clean people. They did buff the area out...and I'm not going to spend a great deal of time talking about their prices except that a large pricing error in my favor, which they had to honor because it was on the sticker, was the ONLY reason the car was priced fairly. What they meant to sell it for was way too high. I drove the car home and just on that short drive a surface crack about an inch and a half long opened up on the sidewall of one of the tires. So I call their service manager the following Monday to ask for some help on the tires. He tells me Carmax will use tires up to the legal 10-year limit as long as they've no structural tears (to be fair the crack was just cosmetic) and have enough tread. Again, legal but cheap and not real smart or safe. While driving home, I also noticed the right headlamp was shining on the ground not 15 feet in front of the car. This is fine as long as you don't exceed 5 mph, but for those of us drive around the speed limit, unacceptable. So I later grabbed a screwdriver to adjust it. Nothing doing. Carmax had improperly installed a new bulb and dislocated the adjuster. On this car, you have to take the front bumper cover and headlight off to fix that, so I have some work ahead. But at this point I would not want them working on my car, haha. So I did not pursue the headlight issue. Oh yes, the car has a keyless entry keypad. A truly great convenience feature for a car to have, but they could not provide the code or promise to access it for me. When I was persistent asking for help on this, the salesman got defensive. "Well if that's going to be the deal breaker" he says. So I jump on YouTube the next day and find the how-to in less than a half hour and access the code myself. I think It's abundantly clear by now I would not buy another car from Carmax. In this case, this was a used car that had been driven so little and cared for by the previous owner so well, and had such low miles I could not pass. It was a special bit of luck to find the car in that condition anywhere. The car was almost an exact copy of one I had wanted back in 2012, when they were brand new on the dealership lots, but could not afford. Great car but not a credit to Carmax, rather to the previous owner. My rating: one star for a weak effort and a horrible lack of product knowledge and another for the easy and helpful vehicle transfer service. read more

CarMax is the best car buying experience I have ever had. This is the first time I was able to buy a car with zero stress. For one, I found a few vehicles I liked online and called to have them reserved for me to see. I communicated with a sales person Melissa, and we set an appointment. The first appointment I could not make so I let her know. She understood and followed up with me a week later. 2 weeks later, I was able to come and she was happy (and I think a bit shocked) that I remembered who I had been speaking to. Unfortunately, she was finishing up with another client and I was handed over to Richard. Can I just say he was amazing, friendly and helpful, and he was very transparent as far as running financing although I came pre-approved from my credit union. The young man who took care of the paperwork Blaine was also very happy, helpful and friendly. Our appointment was late (7pm) and we left by 9:30-9:45. They also have a kids play room. My husband and I came with our 1 year old and was happy to give him a break from sitting so we let him move around a little in the play room. We decided we will buy all of our cars from CarMax if its an option. No more 6-8 hours negotiating with a regular dealership. read more

David made me feel so insignificant and after explaining my situation he became irate and boorish. He then said he couldn't help and took his negative energy to Terry whom then helped me out but brought the same experience at first. She turned out to be very helpful thank god. The only reason why I even bought the car is because I drove 2 hours here because they had the exact car with the exact features and Anthony was the only decent human being there. I called their customer service to find out when they are open to pick up wholesale purchases. Then purchased tickets around their times...customer service told me 9pm. I arrived at 5:15pm and they said they were closed and the lot manager was there, but unwilling to be flexible even when their company had made an error in information. I don't mind when people make mistakes, but the disconnect in not understanding the misinformation was their company's fault bothers me. It was "not our fault because customer service is nationally located rather than local to their office." If you have outsourced customer service to save money, they are part of your company and it is still the company's responsibility to train and inform them as to a locations' information. Also the number was local to their office and the branch is not busy and I spoke with someone who has the power to do the 10 minute job of releasing the vehicle. They are just holding inflexibly with policy and not taking ownership for their companies mistake. read more

I walked up to the front desk and Ryan noticed I needed help immediately. He assisted me in searching their nationwide inventory for something very specific I was looking for. He also took the time to show me around the lot, despite being close to closing time. He was super friendly and very empathetic about the theft of my previous vehicle. He offered to put a vehicle on hold fore for 7 days while I waited for things to settle with my insurance company and went above and beyond the call of duty, staying in contact with me throughout the process. He was super informative and proved to be trustworthy. Went to CarMax with the intention of trading in one car and selling another over the weekend. We traded in my step daughter's car and bought a used car for her. Blake was incredible. He was very knowledgeable about the various vehicles we looked at and we ended up buying a 2015 Hyundai Elantra with low miles. The staff in finance was quick and efficient. The downside is that the interest rates were much too high even on great credit so we ended up paying cash for the car and they low-balled the second vehicle by almost $3,000 below blue book on 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee in pristine condition so we will sell it privately. This was a disappointment because I did this process with them 2 years ago and they gave me blue book value on a different vehicle I sold to them. I bought a car here, and shortly after the warranty ended. I had so many major problems. It feels as though the service technicians do the bare minimum. I had catalytic converter, transmission, engine mount, worn brakes, windows wouldn't roll down, bad headlights, and numerous other problems. Overall a good experience. Had a car appraised and was given above blue book value. The sales person I ended up working with, Antje, was super accommodating and friendly. Called about tire pressure a couple of days after purchase knowing Pathfinders can have sensor issues and was told by Tesa that "most of the time our customers just don't know what they're doing. It's not the sensor, it's just that you need to learn how to put air in". Thanks, Tesa. I know how to do it, but if that fails my husband was a mechanic in the army so he knows a little. Once I got there though, Ahmed did an amazing job helping me. Talked me through his work, was super friendly and professional and didn't talk down to me. Horrible place to buy a vehicle I had spoken to a sales rep before coming in and the sales rep told me everything that I needed before coming in to buy. It was mainly paycheck stubs, proof of insurance and my social security card. So I brought in my printed paycheck stubs because my company does not provide paycheck stubs unless you print them out on your own online. Long story short, I was asked to print them out in front of them because they wanted to make sure that they are legit. That is ridiculous and absurd. There were many things that alarmed me and raised a flag. But another main thing that pissed me off from my experience is that I came and and presented everything that I brought. I was so close to closing the deal and after nearly 4 hours they just said no. That is pretty shitty. Definitely won't come back or ever recommend a carmax to anybody. My aunt went to look at a SUV and was about to purchase one and luckily I came before she signed the paperwork because when I checked it out I noticed the tires were very old (cracked AND chunks were missing), The sales lady said they were "5 years old", so I went back out and checked the production date on the tires and seen that they were 8 years old, my aunt had already signed a check and was ready to put half of the value of the car down and was going to pay it off completely within 30 days, but when she brought up the tires the sales woman kept repeating "they are within OUR standards", so we asked her to have the techs inspect the tires, after inspection the techs said they were "within OUR standards" keep in mind there were CHUNKS MISSING and the tires were completely cracked every where AND after the techs inspected the tires and claimed they were "within OUR standards" my girlfriend noticed there was a nail in the front passenger side tire! So 8 year old cracked, chunked and punctured tires are within THIER specs as long as it had good tread depth, what a joke. All my aunt asked for was for them to replace the tires And she would have purchased it happily and this would be a five-star review. But instead they refused to replace the tires, she was about to pay $18,000 and they couldn't replace the tires for her even though she was concerned for her own safety? Really? We have already found the same exact SUV with the same exact trim with almost the same exact mileage for $200 less WITH NEW TIRES at another dealership. Make sure to pay close attention to the vehicles you are purchasing from these guys and make sure you shop around because all "haggle free" means is their prices are non negotiable and what you see is what you get even if it means worn down tires (just because it has tread doesn't mean it's a good tire) that will need to be replaced pretty much right after purchase. I will definitely keep anyone I know away from CarMax from now on. And if you are dead set on this dealership bring someone who really knows cars with you to be safe. read more

Do not go to Car Max. Read below to see why. I have a 2005 Mercedes SLK350 Hard Top Convertible sports car. I am the original owner. The car has many options and has always been garaged, seviced and detailed regularly. It has 67,000 (low) miles. I took the car to Car Max in Oxnard because I got a good appraisal from them 4 years ago when I was thinking of buying a new car. At that time while the appraisel was good, my wife talked me into keeping the car because as she said, "it's still like a new car." Now 4 years later, I decided I wanted to buy a new 2016 car for myself so I went to Car Max today to sell it. I was greeted by Shondra who was very nice and courteous. She asked me if I wanted to stay for the appraisal process before they make me an offer. I declined as I knew there wasn't anything wrong with the car and it looked and drove like a new car. So I told Shondra my wife and I would be on their lot just looking at their inventory. After about 10 minutes we were told our offer was ready. The offer they made on the car was 1/2 of Kelley Blue Book and less than 1/2 what 2 other dealers offered! I asked Shondra if there was a mistake and she said she would get the man who did the appraisal and I could talk to him. When he came out he said the car wasn't shifting properly and needed a transmission service. I told him I had it serviced at Encino Mercedes not too long ago and it is shifting perfectly. I also asked him if he used the switch for Sport shifting and Cruise shifting as it will shift at high RPMs for Sport Mode or Low RPMs in Cruise Mode.. He said "it won't make any difference the car isn,t shiffting properly" and that explained his offer. This car has been pampered and serviced and runs pefectly. Anyone who has seen my car or rode in it thinks it is a new car. I still have the original window sticker and all the manuals. Either Car Max has changed their business model or they mistaked my car for another. My wife and I were insulted by the appraiser's rediculous offer and attitude. We were just looking and doing our research because rule of laws: you never buy a car on first look or without checking other dealerships. His name was Sergio and I felt like he was too aggressive and disrespectful on how he talked to my wife and I. I don't appreciate a car salesman who is only looking out for his sale and not concerned with making the car buyer happy. This Mexican dude was rude and disrespectful on how you talked down on us and told us we wouldn't be able to get a monthly car payment at $300. I said we can put down $2000 down as a down payment to see if it would help. But he was so rude and disrespectful and was like you need to put down $7000 if you want it under 300. Why the fuck would you be so aggressive and talk down on someone who is willing to buy right then and there if all you want is to get paid and not want to make the sale like a real professional?? I've been to many dealerships and this guy was a big time asshole who acted like a jerk! He should have worked with us and tell us how we can get our monthly payment down to $300. Instead of being a dick about it and saying we don't have good credit and won't be able to get another car approved if we go somewhere else. Fuck you! Very bad service department! Unprofessional and they have no common courtesy at all! I bought my vehicle from carmax 10 months ago with the CARMAX EXTENDED WARRANTY. I had an appointment on May 28 at 9:00 am upon arrival I was notified that they would call me within 2-3 hours for the diagnosis. At 12:30 pm I get a call stating they were unable to diagnose to take it back when the problem became more frequent. I expressed to the tech that the problem happens EVERY TIME I drive the vehicle, how could it be more frequent. I told him that the problems affects my safety while driving the vehicle. So I told him if you guys can't find it I will have to take it somewhere else. He said I understand we will keep you car a couple more hours and I will call you back. I waited for a call and never received anything. At 5:45 pm 15 MINUTES BEFORE THEY CLOSE. Like always it sent me to voicemail, I called back a couple of times. No answer. So at that point I assumed they were going to keep my car overnight since I never heard back. On May 29 I waited all morning to see if they were going to call. They didn't. I had to call at 1 pm to ask for an update at first the tech told me they did not have my vehicle. Then I told him how could it be if i had dropped it off. I explained him the situation and he said well it seems your car is ready to go. So I asked were you able to find the problem. The answer was No. So I asked why didn't you guys call me saying it was never diagnosed and now its ready to go. I asked to speak to a manager and he replied Well the service department is basically ran by two guys. I am pretty sure a company like Carmax has to do better in managing their departments. According to the Warranty I purchased I am entitled to a rental reimbursement when my vehicle is kept over night. Which they never notified me. We just had a terrible experience in trying to sell our vehicle to CarMax. We had an appraisal offer and came with all paperwork to close the deal. We were told there was an issue with one of our names on the title. We went to the DMV and straightened out the issue. Went back to CarMax only to be turned down again this time claiming we needed a Bill of Sale. We had the title in hand showing we were owners with no lien and had no idea what was meant by Bill of Sale. Zero help. Nothing. Not even a sorry. No can do. So. We drove straight to the Ford dealership. Within an hour we sold them the truck. No issue whatsoever with our paperwork. Something is seriously wrong at CarMax. read more

In the last year carmax quality has really taken a dive. The car I bought 8 months ago has had nothing but problems. I had to pay out if pocket to get a repair done, was told it was covered and I would get reimbursed...2 months ago and I get nothing but the run around. I've tried talking to the service manager but it's a complete waste of time. I dont usually make corporate calls to complain but it's time. If I were you I'd purchase a car somewhere else. Never have I had such a wonderful time spending money I did not want to spend in a place I did not want to be. I did not want to purchase a car....but I knew I was going to as soon as I met Darrin in Oxnard. We had a wonderful time. I guess you might be wondering why 'we had a wonderful time' is a review that shows up in your comment section. It is simple.....it is because we did. Not only did I purchase an automobile, I completely enjoyed the experience. Unusual set of circumstances...but definitely repeatable.. An d Darrin was not the only bright light in CarMax. The guy named Cesar at the desk is a lazy douche. My car was ready for more than an hour before he got off his cell phone to tell me. I also got sold a car with a bad battery but they wouldn't replace it. They said it was fine. I came in a couple weeks later after my car just wouldn't start and they said the battery was bad.
