My car was totaled and I find myself having to get a new car, fast. (No one was injured and I was not at fault, so that's the only upside to this story). So, what's the best place to check out lots of makes and models at once? Carmax, of course! The showroom is nice, the woman who greeted us was very pleasant and helpful, and off we went to wander the football-field sized lot of cars, just waiting for their new home. I'm looking to replace my now-totaled, medium size Mercedes SUV with something comparable. We find ourselves in the section of the lot with the Japanese and Euro SUV's --- Audi, Benz, Lexus, etc. Looking for 2016-2019 replacement options. We decide to check out a Land Rover, a GLC Benz and look at a few Audi options. Note: I'm listing the marques not for snob value but because these are, what I would think, some of Carmax's premium vehicles, so you'd expect they take extra care to make sure they are at their best and ready to impress, right? Wrong. I opened the hood to check out the Rover. Hood would not close, hood latch inoperable (I fixed it by manually opening it; it was corroded and would not operate). The inside of the car was covered in what we assume were soda stains (or something else dark and sticky). On the white headliner, on the windows, on the seats and on the sunroofs (whoever prepped this car did it by touch, apparently, and still managed to miss all the sticky spots). The Rover drove nicely but made noises that sounded like very angry lifters (esp. when driving along a jersey barrier, when all the sound is reflected and you can hear what is going on with your car). Did I mention the yellow paint on the roof of the car? Looked like someone had drawn circles on the roof with a yellow paint marker. You could even see it while standing on the ground at the passenger side. So, that was a big nope. Drove the GLC Benz. Drove nice, no weird sounds like the Rover but again, inside was nasty. Brown stains on the white headliner around the sunroof that looked like a leaking seal, definitely not soda and not the kind of stain you see when you accidentally leave the roof open. Same overall impression as the Rover. The pre-sale detailing was perfunctory at best. The prices are competitive and the cost of the warranty package is also in line with what I have seen elsewhere, even at the branded dealers. My concern is that if these are their "premium" vehicles and have so many obvious and easily correctable cosmetic defects, what are they missing under the hood? Why does the hood on the Rover not close? How did this get missed? Why is one of their premium vehicles covered in soda on the inside? Who painted on the roof of the Rover? I'd be very hesitant to buy from this location or Carmax in general after this first, lackluster experience. On the plus side, our sales rep was super helpful, efficient and friendly. By his own admission, he came from a non-auto background and was a salesperson, not a "car guy". My impression is that you will be dealing with salesmen who treat the vehicles as a simple commodity and don't have a lot of understanding of what is under the hood. I'm going to stick with the branded dealers. read more

I wanted to like this place. People were nice but same old dealership in a different wrapper. Website promises interior steamed cleaned and multiple point inspection. Car was dirty inside and out. Stains in the interior. Brakes were grinding on test drive. Very disappointing. During COVID you think they would try even harder for cleanliness in their vehicles. read more

What a great place to buy a car. I called ahead and told them what car I was interested in. I arrived on a cold and rainy day, to see the salesman had pulled the car I requested into the heated garage bays so that I could inspect the car in the warmth. Car was exactly what I wanted. I was back there the next night and picked up my car with a nice big yellow bow on top! They did ALL the paperwork, title, registration, and plates for $5.....and never asked for a deposit. So I went on their website to see how much they sell the exact same car I have for and they are selling it for $12,000 more than the quote they gave me. Cesar was extremely helpful when helping me find my dream car, very mature and great communication. Finding a car is usually such a hassle and honestly not the funnest process, but he made it super easy even though we had opposite schedules. He had great knowledge about a variety of different cars which really surprised me. I've never had a salesman that wasn't super pushy and he was great, even sold me on maxcare which I think was a great idea because of how handy it has been. So I called this location on a whim because I desperately needed a new car. I show up and discuss what I'm looking for with Ed. We walk out to the lot to test drive where I'm left for a good twenty minutes alone while he finds the Mazda I was inquiring about. After the test drive I was definitely interested in the small compact SUV. I asked if I could take a photo of the vehicle to which he responds how the cars not mine yet and we have a lot to do. I am giving two stars because CarMax generously offered me a grand for my trade in. From there, before getting into the finance side of things my dad had a few questions. Ed on the phone to my dad right in front of me rolling his eyes, tapping his pen, sighing. I could not believe how he was speaking to my dad. I left that night and bought a car from Mazda Norwood the next day where the salesman didn't treat me or my father poorly. read more

I purchased a car from this carmax (Westborough) less than a week ago. This was my first time buying at carmax. While I like the car (2015 Lexus ES 350) I have a few issues. First, testing driving a car at carmax is easy. You show up, tell them what you want to drive and within 15 minutes you are on the road. The sales person was nice, no pressure, and helpful. After the test drive I said I would take it. Very low miles... and from what I could see, pristine. I took the VIN # and information I needed, put a hold on the car, and went off to arrange for the payment. While carmax told me the car had been in no accidents (they show you the carfax) I ran my own carfax on the VIN and saw that it had indeed been reported as have been in an accident. This was a red flag but I like the car so I decided to take a closer look the next day. After a close inspection I determined that there was no structural damage it seemed clear the rear bumper had been repaired. Probably a minor fender bender... and this would explain why the dealership in CT sold the off lease car to carmax instead of selling it. Decided to go ahead and buy the car. By the time I put 90000 miles on the car, a little fender bender years before will not be the big issue with the car. Now the problem... I took the car to a car wash the next day. Note that carmax doesn't do a great job detailing + a bird nailed me... so what the hell. When I examined the car after the car wash I could see substantial scratches all over the hood of the car. Just the clearcoat... but substantial... like someone took a wet towel covered in sand and wiped the hood. There is NO WAY I could have missed this when I examined the car. After a little investigation I suspect I was duped by the old "WD-40" trick. If you have clear coat scratches on your car try wiping it down with WD-40. They disappear. They disappear until you wash the car and the WD-40 washes off. Beware. I intend to keep the car... it would be far too big a hassle to return the car (and it otherwise seems solid) at this point. I will give carmax a chance to make this right. If not, I'll keep the car but they will never sell me another car... or anyone in my family, or anyone who asks me what I think of carmax. Go buy a CPO from the dealer. You might pay slightly more... but you won't get duped by tricks. read more

Wife and I went car shopping. Decided to stop in CarMax as they offered the most for our trade. Decided to purchase the vehicle we looked at. our salesman was great. However, that's where it stopped being good. Carmax does not do a full detail on sold cars like a normal dealership would. On the day of our delivery, we got our vehicle and it was gross inside. Dog hair all under the seats, windows filthy, been a week and already have to bring the vehicle in for servise. Transmission is banging, on highway speeds the vehicle shakes like it's going to fall apart. So far not a good experience at all! Oh and getting the insurance transferred over was a pain! Carmax kept running us around, kept getting different answers etc. you have 30 days to return the vehicle, we may end up doing a return and shipping elsewhere. Nothing but a headache here. You have to remember, Carmax was started by Circuit City! That's like Best Buy opening car dealerships. Would you shop at a dealership started by BestBuy? Everything was much different than going to a regular dealership. Just felt off, my gut was to leave but my wife wanted to stay. So we did. Now we're both regretting that. Please do yourself a favor and shop at a regular dealership! read more

Went with my boyfriend since he is looking for a new car. Since he was not going to buy right away that day they wouldn't even let him test drive a car. It basically told us that we weren't even worth their time with a future sale. We will be going elsewhere to look for a used car since other places will let us test drive and have given better customer service. read more

We arranged a test drive of a Mercedes SL 400 with a salesperson (Matthew) by phone, noting that we had to drive two hours to get there. We confirmed en route there, and were told all was set. When we arrived, they could not find the car. Upon further review, they said that it was in for repairs to the seat belt mechanism. So we wasted 4 hours of driving, and they had made no effort to notify us. I realize Carmax is the McDonalds of used car dealers, but cars are not interchangeable frozen beef patties, and customers should be afforded the courtesy and respect of the dealer making sure that a car is actually there. read more

Visited this location at least 2 times over the past year looking for a used vehicle and have to say that I really like the atmosphere. Sales people seem very trustworthy and helpful. The vehicles on the lot are top-notch, unlike many other used-car lots if you know what I mean. I would have bought here if I found the vehicle I was looking for. The company will even ship a vehicle from one of their other locations if you are seriously interested in it. Almost all vehicles are listed at $10K+ however, so you won't find a $5K vehicle here. read more

We needed to sell my mother-in-law's car, as she had moved into a nursing home. We stopped by Car Max in Westborough MA two days prior to make sure we came with all the necessary documentation. We also explained that she was was not very mobile and confined to a wheelchair. Sarah, the CarMax representative explained that if we could get my mother-in-law there, she would go to the car tp have the paperwork signed. We were given another alternative, but we decided to bring her there. Sarah also recommended we come ahead and get all the paperwork done in advance before bringing my mother-in-law. This was great as they were able to get all the written work completed. When we brought my mother -in-law there, all the paperwork was signed with the assistance of Savannah. Both of these young women are a credit to CarMax. After checking the car, they confirmed the on-line offer that was a fair price for a 7 year old vehicle. We recommend them for their service and working with us to accommodate my disabled mother-in-law. read more

I am so impressed by how friendly the entire staff was. They made the process of selling my vehicle effortless, and I am eternally grateful. Went to CarMax because it was recommended by my family. Found a Mazda 6 that cost $99 to ship from Connecticut to Massachusetts. Went to look at it and drove great! Processed all the paper work and signed the papers- then was told they had the wrong title. CarMax moves this car state to state with the wrong car title. Was told it would be a month for them to order a new title. Another week goes by and found a Ford Fiesta! Was pumped I'm going to have a new to me car. Purchased the car and things were great for about 3 months...then check engine light comes on and boom al Of a sudden I now need a new catalytic converter! Basically CarMax screws you over and sells junk cars. Will never recommend anyone to go there. read more
