The trade in offer from Tesla was much too low, they only provide "KBB wholesale" value. They count on their offer being helped by the tax savings. For example, if you trade in a car valued at $20,000, and sales tax in your state is 5%, you receiving a $21,000 equivalent, because your don't have to pay taxes on the $20,000 trade in value. I wasn't satisfied with this offer from Tesla, so I requested offers online. CarMax provided the best price by a good margin. Even after discounting the tax advantage, it was several thousand dollars better than Tesla's valuation, and CarMax claimed their process was very straight forward. Most of the transaction was done online, I uploaded their requested documents (license, registration, etc.). I was then asked when I would like to bring in my car for inspection and sale. A few days later, I arrived at my designated appointment time, and was promptly greeted at their front desk in their rather cavernous reception area. It's a bright and clean space, and was fairly quiet on this particular afternoon. I was told to drive my car into their garage for inspection, and return to their business office. About 10 minutes later, a very nice representative (Liz) told me that she was working on my paperwork, which would be ready in about 15 minutes. Liz returned with the paperwork, and patiently explained the few pieces of paper I was signing. I signed over the title and she handed me a check for the agreed upon amount. I was also given copies of all the paperwork and my license plates. She advised that I contact the registry quickly and destroy the plates if they weren't being transferred. I'd estimate about thirty minutes start to finish. I sold my car for a fair offer, lower than if I tried to find a private party sale, but safer, easier and no hassles. We had tried other dealers and this place blew them all away! We found the car we wanted at a carmax dealer in PA. They shipped it from there to Westborough for $200.00 which counted towards our payment. It was exactly what we wanted at a fair price! I liked the no price haggling and it made me feel comfortable accepting the offer they made on our car since we had already tried several other dealerships. This has got to be the worst experience I have ever had in my entire driving life. If I could give Negative stars I would. Got myself a jeep here on the way home the check engine light came on. Returned the jeep and Carmax deemed It was deemed unsafe to drive. So yes they are selling vehicles they themselves deem unsafe to drive. CarMax Has it back in their possession and it's being fixed. I'm disappointed because I was excited to have it and was not expecting any issues with the vehicle itself. Update: I was supposed to have my car back today. they've had the car for 2 weeks. They keep finding more issues with it. out of the 18 days I've owned the car they've had it in the shop for 14. Coming back a little while after to revise my review. The car I was sold has been good, but not great. Based on my 5.5 years of ownership and mechanic advice, the car I bought had a pretty mediocre prior ownership history. CarMax takes pride in selling high quality used vehicles, but mine was not that. I have had numerous expensive services since buying it. In the first few months of ownership, it needed over $2500 in work. Carmax covered all of this for free - a big win for the warranty. I was not allowed to do a PPI, though because of the seven day return period I took it to my mechanic right after buying it. They noticed a number of issues that should've been resolved before selling it, especially since they ended up fixing them anyway. The headache of having to deal with all of this was not fun for me. Since then, the car has had a small handful of pretty major problems that this model tends to not have unless prior ownership has been spotty. Now well outside of warranty, I'm experiencing problems that are unusual to have given my lower than average mileage. While one could argue that this is part of the risk of buying used, Carmax charges a higher price for the peace-of-mind of getting a more rigorously selected used car. I'd also like to add that the car had some minor cosmetic things as well. Though small (broken passenger visor mirror, bad paint touch-ups), it wasn't the pristine used car that they advertise. Carmax bills itself as a seller of a premium product at a premium price, but this has not been 100% in line with my experience. I may buy from them again, but would definitely take inspections and vehicle history much more seriously - the things I'd do at a normal dealer. read more

Horrible service, incompetent workers, had me waiting weeks before I DUG IT OUT OF THEM that the car I had "reserved" wasn't actually available. If your situation is urgent or you don't have financial wiggle-room for uber and rentals, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. We reserved the car on the 13th, said it was arriving the 15th-20th. We called on the 16th and were told it was arriving the 17th-22nd despite contradicting dates on the website. We called later in the week and were told there was an issue with the title and the car was being delayed, we were not given more details. We called the 21st and made an appointment that night with Tyler to see the car. We came in and were shown the car by someone else. We couldn't drive it, just look inside it. When we asked for clarification on the delay with the title, the people working said they couldn't help us because they were assigned to other customers, not us. When we insisted on clarification, one worker told us that "if the car isn't ready Friday (21st) it would be ready Monday (24th)." We called the 22nd to double check, had to call multiple times, were transferred between 4 people before being told to wait for a call back. Tyler called back and explained he wasn't at the appointment the day before because he doesn't work Friday nights. He also seemed confused that we weren't allowed to drive the car. He didn't know anything about the title and we had to call the "business office." But the business office had just transferred us to Tyler, which I told him. He said he'd look into it and call us back. Tyler called back to say the title was lost in the transfer and applying for a duplicate would take weeks, so we should look for a different car. He then offered a $300 discount to compensate. I turned down other cars, had to pay for ubers, I now have to pay for a rental because they strung me on for so long. Sold us a car, engine blew 3 days later on the way home from the beach. Sat on the side of the highway for 3 hours waiting for a tow truck that they called and didn't get home until almost 2am. Then lied to us saying it couldn't be fixed and said they'd buy it back from us. After about a month of back and fourth, they fixed it and am now trying to register it at the rmv but we don't have "the original title" apparently so we took a day of work off for no reason. Not to mention, getting calls from the Westborough location threatening us that they were gonna come and tow our rental if we didn't bring it back on time? It seems like nobody is on the same page. This has been extremely frustrating & i just Need a car to get to and from work and i cant Believe how disrespectfully they talk to their customers who THEY have wronged. CLASSIC BAIT AND SWITCH! To say this was the WORST business interaction I've ever had would be an understatement. After securing an appraisal, visiting the dealership to confirm, test drive included, we left the car on site. We needed to bring back the title 5 days later. When I returned to sign off they kept me waiting in an empty waiting room for an hour and then shared that the appraisal dropped $1400!!! They had the car the whole time!! Unbelievable. Kars For Kids was much easier to deal with and I didn't need a shower afterwards. The initial process was stress free and professional. On saturday, I was supposed to pick up the car, nobody bothered to call me to tell me that they hadn't gotten the insurance set. So I took an Uber 40 minutes there. Sat there for another 40 minutes, then an employee had to give me a ride home. So I wasted a good portion of my Saturday driving back and forth for no reason. They did pay for me Uber. They were nice about it. But I am pretty aggravated that nobody called to save me a wasted day. We will see if I get the car this upcoming week. We just sold a 2011 Camry in Fair-Good condition at CarMax in Westborough. I had answered some quick questions online about the car in advance, received an offer good for 7 days based on that information and made a follow-up appointment. The entire process was very smooth and we left in a little more than an hour with a bank draft for... 2.5 TIMES what another dealer had offered us as a trade-in there toward a brand new car ($4400 from CarMax vs. 1750 trade-in allowance at the new car dealership). SO happy we didn't just accept that LOW offer in the context of all the confusion and momentum of buying a new car at the other dealership! Just so all of you guys never make the same mistake as me, never EVER shop at CarMax they say they sell "certified vehicles" but sell you a car for more than it's worth and then when your car has nothing but problem after problem they won't do anything for you. When I had bought the car there was a small pinhole in my radiator so of course the leak took so long for me to find out and it was right after my warranty was up. Because of this I had to replace my radiator, the temperature housing, and the canister that holds the radiator fluid. I also had the replace my fuel pump solenoid multiple times. When I first bought the car from them there was wires hanging by my feet and I told them that it wasn't safe and I'd like it to be taken care of, their response was "those aren't important wires" like what?! It's part of the car right? I'm pretty sure they're important... I paid $13,000 for this car, and put maybe $10000 into fixing this car in over time. But the time I paid it off, there was a problem that no mechanic could figure out or fix in which my car would randomly stop driving. This happened twice on the highway. It didn't die, the lights all stayed on, It would just stop accelerating. That's when I sold it and only got $3000 for it. Do not go through car max. After spending hours there ( because he had been helping another disappointed customer who also got screwed for whatever reason ) , after doing searches to ship a comparable car there , ( sight unseen ) , he then tells us that not only was their nothing they could do with the price difference , but get this ..... we were told we had to pay half the shipping price to ship it there( which was HUNDREDS of dollars . )This is the WORST experience I have ever had purchasing anything , never mind a big purchase like a luxury car. Mostly friendly staff but very impersonal and uncomfortable buying experience. Several text conversations went unresponded to. Waiting area had a horrible smell, chairs were very worn and uncomfortable. Sitting in an uncomfortable waiting area to fill out forms on our phones was just bad business. Had questions so stopped working on forms and apparently they expired. A different agent came out and very loudly and embarrassingly complained we let the forms expire and was clearly annoyed when we said we were waiting to get some questions answered about the car before signing to purchase it. Whole experience was just under par. Final straw was the refusal to sell car with two keys. If I'm spending 35k on a car, I want two keys. Was told to deal with it after the sale and they *might* be able to help after telling us it's standard for used cars to only have one key. Sorry. I've purchased several used cars and the dealers always make a second if there isn't one, it's not worth losing a sale over. Had a number of delayed and minor issues, but never apologies. I took my 2009 Mini Cooper to CarMax in Westborough, Ma. Brian, the service person told me that if my car required more than a week to be serviced, that it would I could get a loaner car. I rented a vehicle for a week. Then went back to CarMax and asked for a loaner. They told me the parts were not in, and wouldn't be fixed until the following week. I requested a loaner, and was told that it was for new customers only. What? Totally silly! I reminded them of their promise to provide a loaner if it took more than a week. After nicely pleading with various managers by phone over the course of a few hours in the afternoon, I received a phone call. Miraculously, my car was magically fixed and ready to be picked up. Hmmmmm! suspicious. Now, I'm nervous that they didn't really fix it. $1400 later for repairs, and another $325 in rental car fees, I pick up my car. Brian the service person says they fixed the major leaks but not all of them. What????? That's what I paid you idiots for. To fix my car. $1400, and that's his stupid way of saying it's not fixed. I asked him if it was going to break down, and his response was. "No promises" Seriously Brian, of CarMax. $1400, and you can't back your own work. smh Now I'm driving my car, and it's knocking and sounds like it's about to break down again. Do not give CarMax of Westborough, Ma. your service or money. Stay away from Brian, the service man too. Not the nicest of people either. Not only did they fix the light but replaced my tires, wipers, and fixed the brakes. They said since I just bought the car it needed to be up to their standards. Went in for an "express pickup" after handling everything the day before, but the women the day before had messed up spelling my wife's last name (which is the same as mine) on the paperwork so they had to redo the financing. CarMax had called me that morning letting me know this, and then working with me to redo the paperwork. This would've been no issue for me but they then forgot to submit the new paperwork until after I arrived. I was kept in the dark for the first hour and a half of me waiting, and finally get some poor apologies and excuses. Finally after two hours I get told my wife also needs to be there to finalize the transaction, not sure why we weren't told that the day before or two hours before. About an hour 15 minutes, over three hours total I'm finally finished with my "express pickup". If I'm paying someone over $20000 I expect some good customer service, competent employees, and maybe a coupon for 1 free oil change in exchange for making me wait 3 hours? There is absolutely no way I would recommend any CarMax, and no way I would ever buy a car here again. read more

I went to Carmax to purchase a 2018 GMC Sierra 2500 and to trade in my truck. After agreeing on a price they tried to give me financing but the apr was way to high so the sales guy ( Gary Marsh ) told me I can get a better apr at another bank. I went and got a way better loan at another bank and was on my way back to finalize everything and Gary told me to hold off because the truck was going into the body shop to fix a scratch And it will be ready in 2 days. After 2 days I call to make sure the truck would be ready and he tells me that they have to fix an oxygen sensor and it will be a 2 week wait. I tried calling almost 2 weeks later and Gary never called me back. After looking up the truck online I found out the truck was no longer available. I went to Tucks Trucks in Hudson and they treated me well there. I would never go or recommend Carmax to anyone. read more

My car was totaled and I find myself having to get a new car, fast. (No one was injured and I was not at fault, so that's the only upside to this story). So, what's the best place to check out lots of makes and models at once? Carmax, of course! The showroom is nice, the woman who greeted us was very pleasant and helpful, and off we went to wander the football-field sized lot of cars, just waiting for their new home. I'm looking to replace my now-totaled, medium size Mercedes SUV with something comparable. We find ourselves in the section of the lot with the Japanese and Euro SUV's --- Audi, Benz, Lexus, etc. Looking for 2016-2019 replacement options. We decide to check out a Land Rover, a GLC Benz and look at a few Audi options. Note: I'm listing the marques not for snob value but because these are, what I would think, some of Carmax's premium vehicles, so you'd expect they take extra care to make sure they are at their best and ready to impress, right? Wrong. I opened the hood to check out the Rover. Hood would not close, hood latch inoperable (I fixed it by manually opening it; it was corroded and would not operate). The inside of the car was covered in what we assume were soda stains (or something else dark and sticky). On the white headliner, on the windows, on the seats and on the sunroofs (whoever prepped this car did it by touch, apparently, and still managed to miss all the sticky spots). The Rover drove nicely but made noises that sounded like very angry lifters (esp. when driving along a jersey barrier, when all the sound is reflected and you can hear what is going on with your car). Did I mention the yellow paint on the roof of the car? Looked like someone had drawn circles on the roof with a yellow paint marker. You could even see it while standing on the ground at the passenger side. So, that was a big nope. Drove the GLC Benz. Drove nice, no weird sounds like the Rover but again, inside was nasty. Brown stains on the white headliner around the sunroof that looked like a leaking seal, definitely not soda and not the kind of stain you see when you accidentally leave the roof open. Same overall impression as the Rover. The pre-sale detailing was perfunctory at best. The prices are competitive and the cost of the warranty package is also in line with what I have seen elsewhere, even at the branded dealers. My concern is that if these are their "premium" vehicles and have so many obvious and easily correctable cosmetic defects, what are they missing under the hood? Why does the hood on the Rover not close? How did this get missed? Why is one of their premium vehicles covered in soda on the inside? Who painted on the roof of the Rover? I'd be very hesitant to buy from this location or Carmax in general after this first, lackluster experience. On the plus side, our sales rep was super helpful, efficient and friendly. By his own admission, he came from a non-auto background and was a salesperson, not a "car guy". My impression is that you will be dealing with salesmen who treat the vehicles as a simple commodity and don't have a lot of understanding of what is under the hood. This time frame included arriving, taking a test drive, having our trade in appraised, paperwork & leaving with our new SUV! Well, We purchased our second car from CarMax, the experience was good. No pressure and our sales person(s) was great THAT is the only reason I am giving them 2 stars. It seems that things go wrong with these cars as soon as it passes 90 days. With my car, as soon as the warranty had passed my rear rotor snapped completely in half. Had that replaced and got new tires but they couldn't do the rear alignment because it was "locked" when I took it to an actual mechanic I was told there was no "lock" which I already knew but it would be some time before I could bring it back in for repairs because they were booked. I ended up going thru the rear tires that had been replaced only 3 months before. NOW we purchased another car and when the warranty was up the brakes (including rotor and calipers) needed to be replaced the mechanic(a friend) pointed out the inside of the tires were completely bald. OK easy enough fix just bought tires. And now the car has a hard time starting, the engine cuts off when stopped as it does with most newer cars but it doesn't always start back up when the light turns green and I step on the gas. Just another issue and more money to spend on this car. I will NEVER shop with them again. The cars first seem great but they are not. Their "multi- point" check must just be check the battery, wash the tires detail the car. Clearly on these 2 vehicles the checks were incomplete. I will never go back to Carmax and I would not recommend them to anyone. If I ever even hear someone thinking of shopping there I will warn them. Those 90 day bubblegum fixes get the car out the door and that is all that matters to them. read more

The sales and business staff were a pleasure to work with--knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Overall Carmax is one of the better places to get a used car. Their prices are not the lowest for the same car elsewhere, but they offer very fair standard warranties. They claim to deep clean and thoroughly check all of their vehicles to the industry's "highest standards", but be very, very thorough before deciding on which car to buy since things slip through. Examples: - I felt a thumping in the passenger front tire while driving. Carmax service dept. checked it, including a test drive, and said they didn't notice anything/ it was normal. I had a 3rd party mechanic check it and they provided me with a video showing the tire had three areas were chunks of the tread were removed, the tire had an old patch on it, the coolant had never been flushed, and the rear brakes were unsafe. How did that pass Carmax's "high standards"? I returned that car. - Multiple cars I test drove had very weird smells. Be careful because dealers or previous owners use strong odor masking agents to hide mildew (from flood damage), pet smells, smoker smells, etc. The odor masking agents are difficult to remove after you become the owner and some of the fragrances used are unhealthy to breathe on a daily basis, give headaches, etc. - The car I eventually purchased had a strawberry-like smell that I let go because the rest of the car looked great. Later when I got home and did my own thorough inspection of my new car, I lifted out all of the rugs and covers and found 1/2 inch of standing water and mold growing in the spare tire well!! It was a small plant size mold growth--not just a few dots. This obviously hadn't seen the light of day for a long time. Was my car in a flood? Did someone leave the hatch back open in the rain? Either way I was shocked that this passed Carmax's "high standards" check. I scrubbed, disinfected, changed the cabin air filter, cleaned the vent system, and air-dried the area in direct sunlight---sadly the strong, sweet, strawberry-like masking smell used to cover the mold smell remains. I put charcoal odor absorbers in the car for now - hopefully that will help. The car seems great mechanically (so far) so I will keep it. You will like Carmax if you don't mind having to go back using the warranties to fix things they miss. read more

Within an hour, appraisal was verified (was what they offered online) and I was out the door with check in hand. This Carmax is an absolute nightmare, please avoid at all costs. My cynical side wants to suggest that these Carmax employees are crooks, but more realistically I think they simply rounded up all the unemployed fry cooks in town and tried to build a car dealership. What that accomplished is a gathering of the most incompetent sales staff ever assembled under one garish blue roof. My mom bought a car here, successfully I have to admit, although I don't know how. Every step of the way and every single day she was given misinformation, contradicting information among employees of the same branch, or quite simply lied directly to her face. Her calls were ignored, meetings were cancelled last minute, and the fact that we drove out of there with a car is simply due to our crushed spirits wanting it to be over. I've had a hard time finding a truck with an eight foot bed so ability to see vehicles from many locations was a plus with CarMax. I finally found one I was interested in located in Virginia and they had it transferred for a nominal fee. Their prices were competitive with or better than other local dealers I had looked at. My sales rep, Nevenka, was friendly and helpful during and after the sale. I am happy to say that I when I had questions after the sale I was treated just as professionally as while the sale was being made. The business office handled everything in a timely manner and was also very friendly. One note, they do not offer business loans so if you have a commercial plate be prepared to have outside financing. This is the second vehicle I have purchased through CarMax and I will not hesitate to use them again in the future. read more
