This is a unique drug store that has been in Carmel seeing the community since 1905 . The merchandise they sell are very unique and pretty , not you day to day items that can be easily found in a pharmacy like Walmart or Safeway. We enjoyed looking at some hair clips with European styles , beautiful tote bags with purple flowers , whole collections of pocket knifes. On the top of the shelves are many different antique cameras collection that people donated . This is a special store , one of a kind ! Great service and very friendly . read more

This drug store is a true life saver if you are vacationing in Carmel. My friend needed a toothbrush during our visit and it was no problem at all. They have every essential you might forget at home along with a nice selection of small souvenirs. The store is clean, organized, and easy to navigate, which makes a quick stop feel simple and stress free. It is conveniently located in the heart of downtown, so you can walk in during your day without going out of your way. This store is also open later than most shops in the area. We will definitely come back here if we need anything else during future trips. It is one of those places you are grateful to have nearby when you are traveling. read more

I wish all pharmacies were like Carmel Drug Store. They have everything from medications to haircare to postcards, but I came for their cosmetics/selfcare section. As someone who doesn't have New York money currently but can much more easily take a weekend trip to Carmel, I was delighted seeing that they have a decent selection of CO Bigelow. I get that they have a website but it's a lot more convenient to try stuff out and not having to pay shipping. I bought CO Bigelow toner, bodywash, and balm. The ingredients are fantastic. The toner is gentle on my skin, the bodywash has a refreshing scent and is thick and high quality. The herbal mint balm helped my lips a lot, which were red and chapped and assisted me in a pinch. I'm sensitive to a lot of products but these worked for me extremely well. I've seen Marvis toothpaste around online but never saw it in person. I got the Jasmin mint which is very fun but they also had other flavors of mint as well as stuff like licorice. I'll be back the next time I come to Carmel. They also carry some perfume behind the counters (Roger & Gallet) along with some Pearson brushes. I might get a perfume next time but since this was one of the last places I went, I kept my haul light. It might seem silly to give a 5 star review to a pharmacy but this place is worth it. read more

Cannot tell you how handy and high standards prevail with this one-stop pharmacy shop. i issued to worry that i forgot something when vacationing here in Carmel. No longer.. infact i intentionally leave my aspirin, hair clips and handy traveling alarm clock home.. because i know Carmel Drugstore will have one and perhaps even a better one... and if they don't, they will one -day order it for you. i cannot tell you how much i love this darling family owned by Ross who purchased this gem 10 years ago after frequenting/working here since he was 9 yrs old. Megan has high standards when she and Ross purchase. The items here are rarely seen on shelves of any store let alone a pharmacy. We stopped by today for a handy LED TRAVEL ALARM-CLOCK.. (We don't like sleeping by our cell phones) and sure enough they had a beautiful one. i needed some pure castor oil to anoint my face.. Yes they had it and i ordered 2 large ones to take home. The hard candy by the checkout stand is imported from Switzerland without sugar and non gmo.. i grabbed 3 boxes with different flavors to keep in the car. i love the real wild boar's hairbrushes ( harder and harder to find) and the beautiful combs. i love it all!!! Carmel Drug is a treasure on Ocean Avenue and has been an important part of Carmel for as long as I can remember. It's like stepping back into time with the unique products and decor. This little neighborhood drugstore is so cute. Full of all the basic essentials and a short walk from most of the town's hotels, this is a great spot to grab some toiletries, snacks, or unique souvenirs while on vacation in Carmel. While taking a walk through the city, we spotted this great drugstore. When my husband grabbed the aspirin, my son looked at all the cool books (mostly about the history of Carmel and the surrounding areas) and the cute snow globes in the case. When my son asked if he could see one, the helpful salesperson pulled the snow globe out for him to examine. I glanced at the magazines and found a small selection of ones I already had (yes, I'm a magazine junkie while on vacation). We had our items rung up by the friendly salesperson and were quickly on our way. Every time I walk into this drug store I imagine Marilyn Monroe or Rosalind Russell strolling in right behind me. It's an old-fashioned joint, with so much charm and history it's almost like being in a time warp. They have all of the necessities a forgetful traveler may need, and also the strangest little items you thought you'd seen the end of long ago. If your mom or grandmother told you about a cool cosmetic item they used back in the day, Carmel Drug Store will most likely carry it...in every color, variety and size. We came to Carmel for a quick weekend get away. Part of our visit also included going to a pretty big birthday party for a relative. I was going to do my hair for this party but as I rummaged around through my luggage I realized I forgot bobby pins. The smallest thing in the world, and I forgot it. I was slightly panicked because we were staying right by the beach and I couldn't possibly imagine there being anywhere to get bobby pins. There's no big chain drugstores with in walking distance from our hotel. The yelp app came in so handy because I just looked up drugstore, expecting there to be nothing for miles. Then boom there it was, Carmel Drugstore. Only 3 minutes walking distance from our hotel. I was so happy when I got here. They were so helpful and hand plenty of bobby pins. They had plenty of everything a forgetful gal like me would need. The place is like out of the past. Like a Norman Rockwell painting of a drugstore. It's so cute. Come here if you're in town. I have to admit that the prices here are expensive compared to other drug stores, but they also carry a great array of specialty soaps, gentleman's items, etc. I do have to point out that although I thought the clerks here looked like careless college kids, they actually proved extremely helpful when I was picking out a new razor/shaving kit and my girlfriend was picking out a new mirror. They were very patient and gave honest opinions when we asked them. While I probably won't come here for headache or stomach ache medicine, I'll come by again to check out the specialty items. read more

Dishonest and COVID test hoarding. I called for COVID test availability, they confirmed they had 5; 10 min later I showed up and they claimed they're out. Then I over heard the manager (a lady) tell the cashier to hide the tests. I walked back and pressed the cashier and he confirmed they have some but refused to sell them, claiming that they are for someone else. The manager is completely maskless and a liar. Screw Walgreens or CVS, the Carmel Drug Store is where it's at... Seriously, the nicest, fanciest convenient store I've ever been to. But would you expect anything else from a city like Carmel-by-the-Sea? What can a person find here? A case full of high end hair products, including Mason Pierson hairbrushes, French cosmetics and an entire area dedicated to luxurious bath products. They probably have condoms made of cashmere somewhere in there too... Would a person shop here for day-to-day needs? For the average person - no. But for the typical Carmel vacationer or resident, absolutely. Regardless, a visit to the drug store was an excellent peek into how the other half lives! read more

As a legal drug dealer myself, I couldn't help but to stop into this charming little drug store. Like Krsitina mentioned in her review, it's a bit like being taken back in time. It's one of these rare independents that barely exist any more due to the many big retail pharmacies. The pharmacy at the back of the store was quite small ..but had many bottles crammed into the shelves. The store carried a variety of creams and ointments that you wouldn't find in a Walgreens/Rite Aid chain store. Not much of an over-the-counter meds area though. I got a bad sting from a yellow jacket eight days ago (somehow it crawled up my sleeve in the car, and undoubtedly I would have crashed the car if I'd been the one driving - and the pain felt like a spike had been driven through my arm, and that lovely pain lasted for a few days). Nice old fashioned drug store with everything you need. The store itself is lovely - my issue is with the Rx - closed on Saturdays and Sundays and pharmacist not particularly helpful and in fact alittle rude. I wanted to move my script from CVS to support 'the little guy' as I'm a big believer in doing business with Mom and Pop shops, but won't be coming back to fill prescriptions -they are not competitive if they are closed on the two days you are most free to get errands done, and no one needs attitude from folks who aren't super helpful. The Carmel Drug Store has been an active member in the Carmel community for almost one hundred years. Dating back to between 1905 and 1910 CDS has seen three owners come through. The original business owners sold the store to Greg S. Benedict in the late 60s/early 70s and kept the property. There was a lawsuit in the late seventies against the land owners who wanted a more hands on approach to the stores operations in an effort to charge the most rent possible. Benedict and his partners filed a law suit and won. Today the store is run by Mr. Benedict's best-friend's son, Ross C. Arnold. Mr Arnold's father and Mr. Benedict moved out to California in the sixties together from Connecticut a great adventure and a big change back then. At one time there were 4 drug stores in down. Dolores Drug Store, Corner Drug Store, Carmel Drug Store and Surf & Sand Pharmacy. Surf & Sand's Pharmacy business was old to Safeway Pharmacy of Pacific Grove in 2003, about the time that Mr. Arnold was taking over the drug store. Mr. Benedict always managed his store with a tight fist. He focused only on the essentials, and the products that required little selling at all. The store made money selling products that people know and trust and had been using for a long time. The store continues in Mr. Benedict's footsteps following much of the same business strategies, though without the tight iron fist and wisecracks that always characterized Mr. Benedict's approach. Reminded me of the old small-town pharmacies I use to go to as a kid back in the Midwest. My daughter had bad allergies from using a new sunscreen, so we had to rush to the nearest drug store to get her Benadryl. Benadryl was there, but she also needed water to rinse her face and arms to stop her from itching, but the drug store sales guys didn't let us use the store bathroom even though we obviously need it. In my opinion such lack of empathy and desire to help is unforgivable especially for someone working in a health business. read more
