Wayside Inn is a clean, adorable spot with tons of character. The location is great, walking distance to plenty of shopping and food/drink. We even walked to the beach. Parking can be very limited in Carmel, so being located near everything is great. The room was super cute/quaint and spacious. Very clean, all the amenities and comfortable bed. Our only complaint was thin walls/noise. Heard person in room above us snoring all night :-) Even with windows closed you can hear people outside clearly. Otherwise, just lovely! The Wayside Inn is our favorite place to stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea. The staff is outstanding, always welcoming and helpful. The rooms are charming, clean, and comfortable. We always sleep well at the Wayside! Its location is outstanding, close to shops and restaurants. Ms. Fabulous is perfect for finding the latest fashions. The sliders and beer at Mulligan's are a great way to refuel at noon, and the happy hour at Vesuvio can't be beaten. And Terry's Lounge is perfect for classic charm and a cocktail. We definitely will return to the Wayside again and again! read more

LOVED this charming hotel! The king suite was a huge room, bed was very comfy, and the jetted tub was big enough for my 6'4 husband and myself. The fireplace was right by the tub as well as the TV. The decor was very vintage but not old and dingy- it was all very well maintained and clean. The doors were all solid wood and the window frames were updated and easy to open. It was located right in the heart of town so we literally didn't have to drive anywhere we just walked. The front desk ladies were very sweet and welcoming and suggested some restaurants for us. We loved this place and we'll definitely be back! read more

Stayed in the Premium King Suite a week ago and slept really well. I love that it's on the second floor. When you walk in, you've got the bathroom with toilet and shower same room, and full closet to your left. They have a hair dryer provided, so you can leave yours at home. Keurig machine for coffee is provided and you've got a mini fridge underneath the sink area. Like someone else had mentioned, the furniture is a bit outdated, but not worn down. The furniture setup was nice and my husband and I had a lot of room to sit and place our belongings. There's a small balcony with table and chairs that face the parking lot. Private parking lot is a plus! The jetted tub was awesome and right next to the fireplace AND you can watch tv while relaxing in the tub. Everything was walking distance as well. You are in the downtown area and will hear vehicles and garbage trucks, but it didn't bother us. Wayside is partners with several local businesses in the area, so you get complimentary items or discounts depending on where you go. Pretty awesome! Overall stay was great! The only thing is you do get hit with that old hotel smell the minute you walk into the room. The towels and sheets also had a weird smell to it. Other than that, we'd stay here again. read more

More than expected! Great location with so much to do, see, and explore, all within short walking distance. This includes great shops, wine tasting, and food. On-site private parking was a definite plus on arrival, especially if you are familiar with the crowded and difficult touristy parking situation in this area. Our first interaction after parking was with the housekeeping staff, who were apparently doing double duty sweeping up fallen winter leaves and tidying up parking area. They warmly greeted us and helped direct us to the lobby. We were able to check in an hour early with the help of Scott at the front desk. Again, very friendly, thorough, and helpful. We entered our second story room and we're immediately impressed by the actual size of the room and even moreso by its charm. Great lighting from the many windows and the plantation/louvered style shutters. Even a door to a small balcony to sit for an evening or morning sip of coffee. Our room came with a cozy fireplace which only added to the overall charm and ambience of the room. And let's not forget the jetted tub, which was more than roomy enough for my wife and I. Very clean and meticulously kept. Furnished with a small fridge, ample fresh towels and guest robes, coffee maker, glasses and mugs, and two separate vanities that worked out perfectly for my wife and I. Comfy and cozy bed and amazingly quiet considering being located amidst the surrounding hustle and bustle. Loved our visit and highly recommend to others. read more

Great room, amazing beds, plenty of space, poor management! We requested two rooms as we had 4 women going for a girls' weekend. When I say women, I mean we range in age from late 50s to mid 80s. Firstly, there is very little parking on site. Good luck finding a spot, even on the street until after the restaurants close. We parked down the block, in a public lot, and walked to the hotel. They gave us two upstairs rooms in two different buildings. We asked if one of the rooms could be moved so we could be close to each other (the entire point of the weekend) but were told all other rooms were taken as they were full. We understood but no one had checked into the next room yet. She said no, that they give people their room numbers when they make the reservations and they can't make changes. We asked if we could change the next day, same answer. We had just heard her speaking with the people in front of us who had requested a second floor room and confirmed the room earlier in the week and yet got a ground floor room. Warning - the numbers aren't like most hotels. A number starting with a 1 does not mean lower floor! And numbers close to each other are not necessarily rooms that are close to each other! Oh, and they weren't doing the complimentary continental breakfast delivered to the room. Nor were they discounting because of not having it. And they aren't planning on bringing it back! Be aware when booking, some rooms have fireplaces, some don't. Some have balconies, some don't. But the rooms are beautiful, superlatively clean, and I cannot even begin to describe how comfy the beds were! And, other than the occasional other guests, it was very quiet! It would be nice to book people into rooms as they come in so you could accommodate people who want to be next to each other. What if we had been parents with children?? It would also be nice to actually honor room requests. It would be nice if they discounted for the lack of breakfast or offered a voucher for a restaurant. read more

I was back and forth between a 5 star rating and a 4 star. I settled on the 4 star because the furniture and decor in our room (Room 3) was dated. Not worn -- dated. Also in Room 3, one has to walk through the bathroom to get from the living room to the bedroom and vice versa. There is also little connectivity for phones and tablets in the room. The USB ports in the bedroom were of little use because they were so worn and sloppy (wiggly). Using electrical outlets was difficult due to the fact there were very few available. The last thing cost a star is minor, but the toiletries in the shower were a body wash and a shampoo/conditioner combo which was good as a shampoo but less than ideal as a conditioner. Enough of that. What is it that warrants four stars. The living room was very comfortable. The gas fireplace was great. The couch and lounge chair provided plenty of comfortable seating space, and the lounge chair had a nice foot stool. There was a dining table with two chairs and an armoire that was superbly stocked with a refrigerator, microwave, and Keurig coffee maker. The bathroom was well laid out, including the one closet for the room. Iron and ironing board were available, and there were two marvelously comfortable robes provided. The bedroom, despite not having much connectivity and being dated, was plenty large with an accommodating dresser, a chair, and an incredibly comfortable king bed. Staff in the office are amazing. There was one morning when the hotel's internet provider went down. It wasn't too long until they had wifi that they had procured from a neighboring hotel. Who provides service like that? I'll tell you who. They do! This was our first stay here. It won't be our last. Guaranteed. We already have another stay with them booked. read more

We just stayed at Wayside Inn for the weekend. The location is perfect, the grounds are beautiful, the rooms are clean and cozy. Two things that stood out that were a bummer for us: 1. The room that we stayed in was a two double bed room. When you walked into the hotel room it was the living room and kitchen, then you walk THROUGH the bathroom to get to the bedroom. It was a bizarre set up. Traveling with my whole family it made for an Interesting few days trying to make sure everyone was in the living room so we could each use the restroom. I'm not sure if all the rooms were like that but we found that to be a significantly annoying issue. 2. It was LOUD at night. We pleaded to stay on the second floor but were denied that request, and we slept horribly for 3 nights. The people above us were insanely loud until 1am each night and our whole family was up as a result. Other than those two things, we liked the room and actually would stay again IF we were guaranteed an upstairs room without that bathroom situation. read more

The Inn is conveniently located in the heart of Carmel however, it is so noisy. Garbage trucks seem to come every day around 630am. Previously before Covid, the Inn would bring you breakfast to your door in the morning on trays or in baskets. Very charming then but not now. Our room was spacious! The living room and dining area made up the front. I loved the fireplace that had an automatic timer. The refrigerator was set to the coldest setting (unlike other places that try to save money by using the warmest setting). We also had a fully stocked Keurig and a microwave oven. The Jack and Jill bathroom had a full size closet (complete with ironing board, extra comforter, pillow, fan, emergency lamp), and soaking tub/shower. The sink had an oversized mirror and the bathroom was stocked with full size Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. The Garnier Thiebaut towels were some of the softest I've ever used. The king size bed was very comfortable and came with four layers of alternating sheets and comforters. Complimentary custom ordered breakfasts was delivered every morning to our room within our specified time periods. The registration office was warm and inviting with fresh baked cookies along with coffee and a myriad of teas in takeout cups. Iced cucumber water is also available. The parking is a little tough as there are more rooms than spaces. We were able to extend our stay an extra hour with a late checkout. Ocean Drive (the main drag) is only a few blocks away. read more

I loved this hotel. So central to Carmel and an easy walk to everything. The down beds were SO comfortable, I haven't slept that well in ages. The room was incredibly spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was large and easy to get ready in. My onlyyy gripes are there is very limited parking, for our two night stay we never parked in the lot but always found something within 2 blocks. Secondly, it can be a little loud. We stayed in room 9 which has large windows that face the parking lot and I definitely was woken up a few times in the morning by people talking in the parking lot. All in all, wonderful stay and would stay again. read more

Had an amazing stay at the very charming Wayside Inn. We were having dinner in Monterey when we received a courtesy call from the inn informing us that our room was ready. We thought that was pretty nice of them for the heads up. When we arrived for check in, Jessica at the front desk actually remembered our conversation about dinner and asked about that! The process was easy and we were on our way to our room in no time. The inn is set up a little differently than what you'd expect at a hotel but I saw that there was an ice machine between the buildings as well as a vending machine with soft drinks. The room attendants left the lights in the room on to make it easy for us to get in and even had music playing for our entry. It was really the little touches that started off our stay so well. The entire place was spotless and our bathroom sported a tissue paper rose. The bathroom had fully stocked with basic toiletries. We had a second sink in the entry way which had soap, a facial bar and some make up removing wipes. The room also had a Keurig machine with a few selections of coffee complete with condiments. Our room featured a king sized bed, patio, and fireplace. The bed was super comfy and had a good amount and variety of pillows for optimum sleeping. Since it's a little cooler these days the fireplace was the perfect place to warm up after a nighttime walk in Carmel. The fireplace is on a timer and the only comment I will make is that the timer does have that characteristic ticking noise. The package we got also included a complimentary breakfast. We checked in pretty late and were told that we could still fill out the breakfast ordering slip and leave it under the doormat. There were many time slots for breakfast to be delivered so we opted for one of the later times which was 9-9:30am. They were actually extremely prompt in bringing breakfast to us and got there a few minutes early to make sure we had our food. We enjoyed two different quiches - ham and tomato and a cheesy spinach one. We also had an assortment of pastries including a fresh, flaky croissant and a really tasty raspberry muffin. It was a little chillier in the morning or we could have enjoyed breakfast on the patio. There are flowering vines and bushes around the grounds and our patio was framed with a particularly pretty angel's trumpet tree. I had an amazing stay here and I'd absolutely return in a heartbeat. read more

My husband and I stayed in Carmel over the weekend in celebration of my 40th birthday. This was our first time venturing out since the shelter in place began. I was very nervous, so in an abundance of caution we took our own disinfectant wipes to clean down the hotel. I fully expected to find a lot of dirt and debris on the Clorox wipes left behind by housekeeping, however I was pleasantly surprised to see that our wipes remained clean and white after hitting every service surface in the room. We would absolutely stay there again. We got a room with a living area, kitchen, fireplace, king bed and soaking tub. It was like having a one bedroom apartment, which was awesome. We had to deal with the front desk on a few occasion for simple things like requesting more towels and coffee due to opting out of room service, everybody was extremely responsive and nice. Would highly recommend to anybody who is considering staying here. And if you're COVID nervous like me, this is the place to be! read more

We've stayed here four times. The inn is in a great location where you can walk to any downtown Carmel location in just a few minutes. The beds are comfortable. The water pressure is always very low. The bathrooms have a frosted glass door so it's easy to see through them. The fireplaces often don't work (two of our four visits). The TVs or cable service aren't HD or are of really poor quality. read more

My wife and I decided to go to Carmel for my birthday weekend to find a new piece of art for our house and we choose Wayside Inn because they are right in downtown close to all of the galleries. In the corner entering downtown Carmel is this little bed and breakfast. Parking onsite is first come first served with Parking spots are narrow but serves most vehicles. There is a lobby with two entrances to access from depending on where the room is. Lobby had apples, cookies, tea, and coffee stocked each time we came through. Manager was friendly and prompt to greet and check us in upon arrival. Check in is after 3:00pm? Manager was well spoken, clear, and articulated answers to our questions. He was able to provide instructions on the breakfast to be delivered to the room at a selection of times on a first submitted basis. Key cards were responsive to the room. The room itself was a bit on the dated side, but on par with most pictures of bed and breakfasts. Our room was a basic queen room. The room had bottles of water and Keurig coffee machine, flat tv, mini re fridge and a dated microwave. Bathroom was tucked away with a toilet and a shower with curtain. Room temperature was set correctly. Not a large deviance between night and day when we elected to run the heating and air unit. The bed was ok. Not the best not the worst. A little soft for my wife and I to get a solid night rest for being tired. The sheets were nice but slipped a bit when untucked from between the mattress and foundation. The lamps and lighting were decent in the room. One of the lamps was loose where the on off dial was but operational. The carpet was used, had some buckling but not enough to trip on. Carpet was clean. Canned lighting could use a slight dusting as there were some cobwebs. The restroom worked ok. Toilet did not make loud noises. The hot and cold were fairly quick consistent throughout our stay. The mirror did not hold up straight but served it's purpose. The shampoos, conditioners, lotion, soap were decent. Not the greatest but not the worst. Bathroom was clean for most part. Grout needed a light cleaning but also reflective of the age and being bed and breakfast. We tried the breakfast for the two days we stayed. Menu varies. We tried some of the pastries, yogurt, fruit, juice and quiches. First day most of our request was met. The pastries were decent for offering including croissant, scone, yogurt, and quiche. The regular fat yogurt and fruit was exact with two berries of blackberries, raspberries, and blue berries. It was ok. Pastries came warm, we saved, as we didn't consume immediately, and held. We tried the vegetable quiche and a meat quiche. One vegetable quiche was cooked through and good balance of spinach, eggs, and seasoning. The other was not as baked through and a pinch on the runny side. The meat quiche was packed full of ham and bacon pieces. It was good. Baked through. Good value for hotel in the Carmel area. Decent breakfast offering. Bad not much to say other that slightly dated in some decor. A few minor cleaning issues but not bad. I wouldn't mind staying here again. read more

Overall great customer service. Price is great with the specials they run. The room was updated, had flat screen tv, fireplace, and our room had a mini kitchen. Coffee, tea and cookies served in the lobby all afternoon. Breakfast and newspaper is delivered between 7:30-8am to your doorstep. Consists of juice, (coffee in room), toast, fruit, yogurt, cereal and muffin. Great location in the heart of Carmel, just across the street from Carmel Plaza. Walking distance from the beach, eateries, stores, etc. And just a short drive to Monterey. Only complaint is parking is limited. There are not enough spots for each room so some will end up parking on the street (which is limited to 2 hrs during the day). Oh and our room didn't have an alarm clock. Plan to return. read more

This hotel is clean and in a good location in Carmel but if you value sleep you might want to request a 2nd floor room as people going up and down the stairs sounded like a herd of elephants. We were traveling with young children who were woken up by this noise. To make matters worse the hotel had construction going on all day long above us, hammering and drilling. The baby did not sleep through this noise. The parking is horrible and during our stay valuable spaces were taken up by the construction crew. We had to park down the street in a public lot. Be forewarned. Not convenient for those traveling with babies. Another nit, we had originally requested a suite but because of Covid we had to change reservations many times and no note was in our request to have a suite because we were given one room even though the suites were available but booked in front of us by the clerk. I don't know that I would stay here again if other comparable places like Tally Ho were open. They have parking available at least. read more

First time staying here for my husband and I's anniversary as well as his birthday. Super cute place at the edge of town but very close to Ocean Ave where most of the shopping is. The parking is limited but we were able to find spaces each time we left and came back, otherwise there is street parking which seemed to get full on weekend evenings. We had a room with a king bed, fireplace, mini fridge, jetted tub and little balcony (room 21) and would definitely stay in this room again. Everything was COVID sanitized (I.e. remote sealed in plastic, extra alcohol wipes) and I felt safe staying here. It looks like at some point they did offer food but not while we were here. There was no AC but they did provide a small fan which worked for us and the room never got too hot despite it being 85degrees both days we were there. Also they called us on our first evening and asked if we wanted room service, we said no not realizing they were asking if we wanted it at all during our stay so we had to go ask the front to make up our room which was fine. You can hear those above you as well as people out on the street but not sure what you'd do about that given most of these Inns are all older and you are in the middle of Carmel so we had no issue with it. The convenience absolutely outweighed all that! read more

If your into shopping this place is for you it is located within a few steps of the local stores. Best of all it is located about 100 feet of Nielsen brothers market where the sandwiches are fantastic and prices are good. The place includes a kitchen that comes with dishes utensils a small fridge. The place was clean and staff was friendly. Three minor gripes are that there is no door to the restroom, YIKES. There are doors to the hallway and bedroom so you can give a situation status report to guests and or other persons staying there that you will be peeing, pooping and or washing. Number two the walk to the "sea", Is 12 minutes to get there and 24 minutes to get back due to the 12% grade of the road. Number 3 the jacuzzi tub did not work and also the water pressure was a little low. But that's it. read more

I booked the room on Bookings.com and then I received two email confirmations of the booking, over a few minutes. But someone called me from the property telling me that there was a glitch and someone had just booked that room a second before me. And he asked me to cancel my booking so he could refund me. That is all nonsense. And I know that. They were just trying to sell the room at a higher rate than what I had booked it for. This is despicable. If this is how they treat their guests I can only imagine how awful all their customer service is. This is beyond despicable actually. read more

The room was spacious, and cozy. The minute we walked in the room, we felt so comfortable. The room had a beautiful fireplace, and awesome air bubble tub. Cute little patio to enjoy your first cup of coffee on. The minute i laid down on the feather bed, felt like I was on a cloud. We only had the chance to stay one beautiful night here. I bought the room to celebrate my boyfriends birthday, and have a relaxing dinner. To stay in town, without worries of driving all the way back home. The town has a lovely charm, and so much to do. Our only wish, was to have one more day to stay. Our hotel office had a lady Jessica, in front desk that made our Sunday before leaving so great. She was so kind hearted, and very concern that we had a grest night stay. Jessica asked what are plans were, and she added some extra cool suggestions spots to visit along the way. She was very knowledgeable of all the surroundings, restaurants, bakery, stores, and other places not to miss. Jessica is what gave us the 5th star on our review, and made our stay more enjoyable. Places are beautiful in there self, but people make or break the experience of wanting to come back with the awesome service you receive. Jessica was a superstar host, and we can't wait to come back. We would stay here again -- in a heartbeat. My wife and I took a quick vacation to Carmel/Big Sur and found Wayside Inn (mostly because other "top choices" were already full). What we found was a great bed and breakfast, right in the heart of town, at a reasonable price. Unlike a traditional B&B (breakfast served in dining room), the Wayside Inn makes little coolers (filled with fruit, cereal, pastries, juice) and places them outside your door at 8am along with a local newspaper. Our room also had a Keurig coffee maker so we could have coffee in the room as well. This place is a great hotel in the heart of Carmel. read more

Stay for the bed, but not the breakfast. My girlfriend and I came to Carmel for a wedding weekend. We checked into our room at the Wayside Inn and found it very charming. It had a cozy living area with a gas fireplace, beautiful new bathroom and very comfortable bed. Then came the "breakfast". It comes delivered to your door in the morning after you fill out a menu of choices the night before. Blueberry muffins that were comparable to what you buy at the gas station and orange juice in a can. A CAN. This is California, right? Finally, the milk for the cereal was curdled. Three stars. Worth the night's sleep, but get breakfast elsewhere. If you are going to be a B&B you might as well do both, right? The room rate certainly seems like it would support a better effort on the food. read more

My boyfriend and I were on our way up to San Fran from LA and decided to take a break and stay the night in Carmel. It was late but we managed to catch the girl at the front desk in time to check in. Tanya (I believe that was her name) was so sweet. She had already locked up and was about to head out, but stayed just a little longer to help check us in. The room was quaint with lots of accommodations. Fridge and a kuerig, and a huge comfy bed. Very clean room. Also, it was a nice touch that they have a complimentary breakfast delivered to you at the time of your choice. If I'm ever back up in the area and need a place to stay, this would be my first choice. Very affordable, great staff, great accommodations. read more

We love this place! We've come here a handful of times and it has been wonderful every single time. With the pandemic, they don't do breakfast which makes me sad because we love the breakfast service to our room. Yes, this is a small inn where you will hear people around you. It is what it is. Carmel is mostly made up of inns, so I'm not sure how you would avoid that. We've tried a few different rooms and they've all been great. We recently tried the king room with the fireplace and our only complaint is that the bedroom isn't separated from the bedroom so if you and someone else are watching separate TV's, it's a little difficult to do that. The staff has always been amazing and even though the parking is limited, we haven't had many issues with it. It's like a block away from Ocean Ave and everything is super walkable. Highly recommend and if you find a deal for the room, it's really doable. My husband and I come to Carmel just for the Inn and just spend time relaxing and enjoying the scenery and restaurants read more

There are about five hotels that are affiliated in Carmel and Half Moon Bay. So we stayed at some of them in the past and we got an email for 50% off for the month of January and decided to take advantage of it. It was raining but it didn't spoil our good time in Carmel. The Hotel staff were excellent and very helpful our room was clean and big and comfortable. Breakfast was included and brought to our room. You got to pick what you wanted and it was okay. We just had to reschedule our reservations due to covid since all restaurants are closed. We had multiple separate reservations and all other parties in our family postponed to January. My wife and I had just twin boys so it's super hard to micromanage other things and when we realized that we didn't call they were not helpful at all. They insisted on the deposit. Our family has been going there for 15 years straight for several nights. Wow. Wonderful service. I will look elsewhere to get all of our reservations. Over one night deposit. Everything about this place is great. It is centrally located to everything in the heart of Carmel. Helpful, friendly staff. Great breakfast deliveredin the a.m. Comfy beds. Lots of little extras without being over the top. The only thing that I didn't like was the paper thin walls and the loud neighbors. The building is old. The upstairs squeaked horribly and the plumbing was annoying. Lots of door slamming and talking. Huge downfall for me. At least I had a room on the end. read more

We've stayed here several times but our last visit will be our last. Somehow we ended up in the smallest room they have which was...ok. What was difficult was the zero shelf and storage space in the tiny bathroom. The outlet plug in the bathroom was worn so anything you plugged in just feel back out which was probably a blessing because the outlet wasn't GFI protected anyhow which it should be in a bathroom. There was only one mirror in the whole room-in the bathroom of course. Needless to say, getting showered and ready was challenging for 2 people. The room had a nice leather chair to lounge in. Problem is there was literally no other place for person #2 to sit. A little too cramped and the electrical safety issues were hard to ignore. Btw parking isn't guaranteed. read more

Ideal location to walk to everything in town. Had stayed here before in a smaller room and it was beautiful and the breakfast was fantastic, both 5 star. This time stayed in king suite which was also very nice, separate living room, kitchen, all traditional style furniture, not super modern, if that matters to you. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable and luxurious. Took off stars because it smelled unpleasantly, a smell I can only describe as "dandruff". Spoke to staff about smell but they had no comment other than thanking me for telling them. Everything looked extremely clean so not sure what the smell is, didn't smell like any cleaning product, disinfectant or room freshener. Keeping windows open did not remove the smell. Also was very disappointed that no breakfast was included! Checked and found other hotels in town are still including it. I understand about Covid but all the restaurants are serving food outside or delivering so don't understand why breakfast couldn't be delivered to room as it had been previously. This place is not cheap so having breakfast included matters! read more

We had a beautiful room with fireplace and a jetted tub. The receptionist was really nice. The only down side was the parking. We had to park on the street but it wasn't horrible we were just right across the street. I would definitely go back and stay again! read more
