Briarwood Inn has super close proximity to main shopping area of Carmel by the Sea. Note that some cottages / rooms include parking while others do not so make reservations accordingly. We booked with parking so our days in Carmel were great not having to look for parking. As far as the booking goes we had zero issues. Room is clean. Dog friendly. Large bathroom. Room was spacious and plenty of room to move around (appears to be an ADA accessible room). As far as the hotel itself... not many amenities other than the office lobby area with water cooler dispenser and microwave. Our room had a refrigerator. No pool or fire pit seating area so you have to go to main street for entertainment. Price was great considering the proximity to the main street and restaurants. We would stay here again read more

I am hoping to save another family from the same situation we experienced with the reservation of the Briarwood Inn. We rented one of the cottages, and at almost $450 per night, had decent hopes. We are not fancy hotel people, but we are clean hotel people. There was so much hair in the bathroom upon check in that I called (staff was gone for the day) because it looked as though it was very marginally cleaned. Then we got to the bed sheets. After seeing so much filth, I turned down the bed sheets entirely to make sure we didn't gave a problem, and we sure did. Hair all over the sheets and pillows in both rooms of the cottage. This is totally unacceptable and we were stuck with our family in this room for one evening because at 4pm, not one person on the staff was available to help us. The couch in the cottage was so filthy that no one in the family felt comfortable sitting on it. The kicker is that we had to fight for our money back, which I let my credit card company handle, and we had to scramble the next morning to find somewhere in town that could accommodate us. If cleanliness is at the top of your list, this hotel is not it. read more

Have you ever been in Love? Not in Love with a person, but in Love with a city?? Well, Carmel-by-the-sea... You had me at Carmel! We have been oh-so-lucky and have stayed in this Magical Town on 3 different occasions and each time we have elected to return to the Briarwood Inn. On our 1st trip in 2014, my wife found the Briarwood Inn while searching for places to stay for our weekday getaway. I can still remember pulling in and going inside the office to check in and being told by the gentleman at the front desk, don't forget to come back later that evening for their Port & Sherry hour. Funny thing was... We showed up later that evening at the designated time for our grand Port and Sherry tasting and guess who was there?? Me, my wife and the same guy working the front desk from earlier that day...haha. Well I wasn't going to pass up on free booze so we let the Port & Sherry flow. From that initial visit, we returned 2 different times over the years, once with friends and another time on our own. What I love about the Briarwood Inn is that it's a Bed & Breakfast without the traditional staying in the same house B&B aesthetic. Each of the rooms available are different from the next and vary in terms of layout and decor with most having fireplaces available. I remember one particular room having a really big bath tub which was very relaxing. Of course with Covid, this has temporarily been altered, but normally they serve up a traditional continental breakfast with all the usual morning goodies. The convenience of Briarwood Inn's location just can't be beat. You literally can park your car your entire stay and just walk everywhere during your visit. Only a few short blocks to town where you can eat, drink and shop until you drop; the downtown portion of Carmel is so quaint and cozy, it's truly a beautiful place to visit. Lots of Art Galleries, mom & pop shops, wine tasting rooms and great eateries, you too will fall in love with this little town. If you wanna see Carmel & you're on a budget, this is the place to look into. No frills accommodations located in downtown Carmel, but still comfortable. We got one of the rooms up front. Parking wasn't included but we were able to park on the street right in front & move it around as needed. Typically there is breakfast that is included with your stay but because of Covid, that was not an option when we were there. They do have a coffee maker in your room & a small fridge which was a welcome amenity. The staff at the front desk were friendly. In walking distance of everything in downtown Carmel. Brophy's Tavern is right up the street if you're looking for a quick bite of dinner. They're open later than most places in the downtown area. read more

We learned upon checking in we had to find parking that wasn't 2 hour parking. I booked on Booking.com a month in advance and there were NO details on the different rooms. Online made it look like all rooms were suites. I should've checked on the website to know more about what I was paying for. That's completely my fault. Big tip: online can be deceiving. Do thorough research before the cancellation window expires. But also, the poor description isn't why this review is what it is. The room was nice enough and deserves 3.5 - 4 stars on its own (the bathroom light is noisy and the water pressure is not that good. It's nothing special but not atrocious. Probably just a little outdated). My husband and I booked for a whole week and there was only one room available, the Greenwich room. It was cute, quiet... until the construction started. There was NO warning before booking that construction would be going on right next to our room. When we arrived, we had to sign a form acknowledging the construction... but it's not like we could cancel because it's outside of the 72 hour cancellation policy. I WOULD have cancelled if I had known about the construction. It's our Honeymoon... we want to sleep in. There is also NO AC so if we wanted a breeze or to not feel so stuffy, we had to keep either the window facing into the parking lot open (right next to the office where people are constantly coming and going) or the back window open... for the construction noises throughout all hours of the day. And the windows dont have screens to keep bugs out. The room was no longer peaceful or cozy. I think the most underhanded thing was that I checked some of the other rates for the bedrooms, like the St. Anne with a jacuzzi hot tub and fireplace or the Dickens with at least a microwave and mini bar... and they were $50 LESS per night than our room, with more amenities. I asked if I could have a discount for the room since it's pricier than their higher end rooms and we are rooming multiple nights in a row (which you would think would make it better pricewise) but no. I asked why those were so much cheaper and they couldn't give me a straight answer except that we had a walk in shower... right. Then it should be same price, not substantially heftier in price. No discount for construction waking us up every morning either, which is absolutely lying by omission on the state of the inn. I get that it's a business, but there is no way that any of that is fair. The location is ideal, right near the main Ocean Ave strip, a block away from a laundromat, and about 10 blocks from the beach, but there are SO many other places to stay that are worth the price that dont wake you up at 8am every day. And if they do, they better warn their tenants about it. It's the right thing to do. Honestly, I wouldn't be so pissed if they were just upfront about the construction at the time of booking and/or offered something for the inconvenience. It's a shady business practice. We love this location. I will not say which is our favorite room. The property could use some upgrading but we love the location and people. We can walk to Ocean Ave and several restaurants. Learned a new way to get to TheBarnyard vis San Carlos Ave. stopped at the Mission, it is so beautiful. We are already planning our next trip with things to do. Beach is absolutely beautiful with people enjoying the mild weather, sun and running some beautiful dogs. Such a great locale to visit. read more

The Penthouse cottage was super comfy for my family and pet. We love the charming vibe and the gas fueled fire place. Everyone had a restful nights sleep on the comfy beds. On our first morning we were awoken by construction including loud jack hammering and yelling from workers at a construction site adjacent to the Inn. We approached the front desk and we were given Augustina's email and told she would respond in a couple of hours. Email was sent at 9:30am and when we returned to the hotel at 5:30 there was no response. We went back to the front desk and got no help. The gal insisted that we would hear back and that Augustina was still working. We asked for her phone number but she wouldn't give it to us. We finally heard back at 5:41pm and the proposal was to complain to the city of Carmel. The customer service was simply awful, rude and condescending. No effort was made to make this situation right. This is just BS. We will NEVER stay here again and can't recommend that anyone else stay here! I'd give them zero stars if that was possible. read more

Stayed here for a couples weekend getaway from the bay. One word to explain this place is convenience. Luckily enough, my partner and I were able to secure a parking spot so no need for off-street parking. I suck at parallel parking so that would've been horrible and the street it's one is fairly busy so it would be pretty hectic. So if you aren't secured a parking spot by the inn then keep that in mind. The actual location is in the heart of Carmel. We only ever used the car to go to the beach, which is still walking distance away but we didn't want to carry all of our beach things. Inn is within walking distance from a bunch of mom & pop shops, MANY eateries, etc. The actual room was very spacious and comfy. The bathroom was nice. Water pressure was excellent compared to all the past inns and hotels I've stayed at. Perfect place to stay in my opinion. Would come back here again. The building look is very traditional Carmel, which is good if you're looking for a classic stay experience. But our room itself felt old and had a musty smell. To make matters worse, I found a couple hairs in the bathroom sink counter. The toiletry packaging also had some weird orange stains on them which added to my disgust. I was already hesitant on staying in hotels amid the pandemic; Briarwood Inn could have done a lot better in easing my uncertainty. The front desk will call you the day of to see what time you plan on checking in since they close at 7pm. They leave your key under the doormat just in case they miss you, which doesn't seem that secure. The wifi here is pretty weak, so I had to sit at different areas of my room to get a good signal. Cute little quaint Inn, nestled in the beautiful town of Carmel. We come to Carmel often and we've stayed at a dozen or so places throughout Carmel. This little guy is so quaint and cute. The rooms are so warm and cozy. The beds were so comfortable. They serve a free continental style breakfast each morning in their little, mini, cozy lobby. Augustina assisted us and she was a gem. Such a doll! The only problem is the parking. Not all rooms have an assigned parking space so be sure to ask them when booking your room. Also, they are a tad overpriced for what you get but Welcome to Carmel as they're all overpriced! Here are some of our favorite restaurants for you to enjoy: Casanovas- Great place for lunch. Dinner is a bit on the pricey side. Mission Inn- Great steaks and piano bar. Clint Eastwood owns it. We've seen him a dozen times here at night. Rio Grill- Best artichoke in town. Highlands Inn Market Cafe- Amazing, stunning, breathtaking views. Go for lunch. El Fornio-Great happy hour. Dinner is just ok though. Flaherty's-Great clam chowder. Dametra Café- Most fun you'll have. Live music and great food. Make reservations well in advance. Aw Shucks-Great sit at the bar place. Great seafood spot. Wanted to plan a nice vacation here with my husband for our engagement and was so sick I could not travel. Was obviously very disappointed. I decided to stay on an extra night and had to change hotels due to availability and was lucky to find a dog-friendly room available at the Briarwood inn. The staff were incredibly warm, friendly, welcoming and helpful. I stayed in Room 3, Sommerset, and loved it! I would definitely stay in the room again as the room was large and was more than enough space for myself and two large dog crates. One of the big pluses about the inn is that the room came with own private carport, a bonus in Carmel, especially during the busy tourist season. The room was away from the street, and next to the laundry area. There was a room above, and another across the way, but noise was minimal. Be aware that the room features venetian blinds, so if you're bothered by light, you might wake up on the early side in the morning. Also, the bathroom sink is in the main room, and not the bathroom and it's a small, tight space. That being said, the room also featured a small fireplace, mini wet-bar and a microwave. The bed and bedding were incredibly luxurious and comfortable and I had a fantastic night sleep. I would highly recommend staying at the Briarwood inn. read more

I checked in my family last week for my wedding . It was a nice place except that after you booked is that when a disclosure about construction next door will be disclosed . Everything went well except the next day after we checked out that their office was calling me to ask about a garage key card (that they charged my card) that their front office was suppose to issue when I checked in . Apparently I did not get one and we did not even use the parking space provided , that wasn't disclosed too that it wasn't on site where the room was but next street in a parking garage . Would've been nice if these were explained . Anyway , the place was pretty decent . Too bad driving back to Carmel , we will just find another place to stay . I've vacationed regularly in Carmel for over a decade, trying out many of the hotels and B&B's. I was impressed by the Briarwood Inn, especially after booking on short notice. Our upstairs room was spacious yet cozy thanks to the gas fireplace. The furniture is updated, and the large TV allows for some serious vacation-mode vegging out as well. The breakfast was light, thus the 4 stars instead of of 5. There is coffee and tea, fresh fruit, and bagels. There was no hot breakfast like the neighboring B&B's offer. I did enjoy my breakfast in front of a lovely and charming fireplace, though. Other perks include parking and easy walking distance to popular shops, restaurants, and the beach. read more

I have been staying at Briarwood Inn for over 30 years. The location is fabulous the staff very efficient and friendly.

BEWARE of the 72 hr cancellation policy! Called the main desk 3 days in advance to notify of needing to drop the last night of reservation due to work, and left message as the clock had just turned 7:01pm. (There is NO ONE to help you at the inn if it isn't during business hours.) Call was returned next day, AFTER being charged a full stay 2.5 days PRIOR to check in. Who has ever heard of being charged full amount ($1,000+) for a place to stay when check-in is DAYS away? We checked in for our 3 night stay, and explained again we had to leave after 2 nights...but it was at our loss/no credit. If I could have canceled the entire reservation 2.5 days ahead of time, I would have...but then we would have been out over $1,000. We stayed in room #S3... Pros: Clean room with premises in good condition. Friendly cleaning crew/staff. Arta & Augustina especially helpful and informative! Great organic in-room coffee from Carmel Valley Coffee. Cons: Mattresses firm, uncomfortable, and noisy. All windows without screens to keep bugs out. There is NO A/C...the upstairs gets hot/stuffy. No blackout options on windows for sleeping in, or with bright nighttime security lights. Think twice before booking here...I wished we hadn't, especially for our one year Anniversary! read more

I called more than 24 hours ahead of time to request a refund and let them know I was very sick and they refuse to honor a refund or credit of any kind to us. I was excited to stay here with family during Thanksgiving week but as we all know there is a second spike. My family had to cancel their trip two days before our booking from Philadelphia and Briarwood would not allow me to cancel my room. We were in close contact with someone who tested positive for Covid and we are being responsible by not having family come or traveling to other destinations. They requested I send medical tests showing a positive test to confirm. Is that legal? They need to adjust their cancellation policy during these times. I was charged the full amount. Stayed here over the weekend for our minimoon and it was just perfect! Came with WiFi and personal parking. Our room was clean and cozy, (no ac) but it was cool enough it did have a fire place and microwave which was convenient because we were so close to the restaurants and shopping and the beach, everything is walking distance 5-10 min.. the staff were all so kind it was so peaceful and quiet. Super belated review (we stayed in July 2011) but I figured I procrastinated enough to finally write a review about this place. In short, I LOVED my stay here and would have no doubts about coming back. We stayed in Room #M4 - Essex and the best part about their website is that every room is detailed and has photos. I knew I wanted a room on the 2nd floor and one that has its own PARKING space (some of the rooms do, some don't). I booked through their website with a travelzoo discount ($69 per night) for a very reasonable $150 for 2 weeknights stay. I had reaaaally low expectations of the place (due to my disastrous stay in Catalina & understanding photos can be deceiving) and was delighted to find my room in perfect condition: queen sized bed, flat screen tv, full kitchen & mini fridge with all the kitchen gear (pots, pans, plates, bowls, etc..), 2 comfy lounge chairs and a fireplace! The fridge was perfect to stash leftovers and having a microwave was fabulous! Bathroom was a little on the cramped side though. The only real issue I had was the thin walls...earplugs did the trick. Their "continental breakfast" was a bit on the weak side, but it had the basics. We took it to our room, and actually grabbed a few things to supplement our hikes. Their office staff was also very nice. Easy to connect to Free WiFi. Wonderful location!!! We were able to walk everywhere in Carmel and it was really easy driving to Monterey and Big Sur (only 15 minutes away from Point Lobos!!). It is important to note that during the summer months, Carmel/Monterey/Big Sur area gets REALLY foggy (due to the clash of the cool coastal air with hot inland air) so that's probably why we got such a great deal for our stay. read more

Location, location, location! Briarwood Inn is a old quaint property located at the beginning of the town of Carmel. You can walk everywhere from here, no need for a car. The rooms are cozy, ours had a mini kitchen, a gas fireplace, comfy chair and very comfy bed. The walls are thin, you can hear your next door neighbor or in our case downstairs neighbor, however we didn't have any major issues with the noise. For parking they have some rooms that come with parking space, but it was easy for us to find parking on the street. We loved walking in town all morning and very easily going back to the hotel to take a nap. The staff was very friendly, they offer a continental breakfast in the mornings and a wine soiree in the evenings. Really nothing bad to say, would stay again if in town. read more

Stayed here with my mom for an overnight stay. Clean room, great location, off street parking that you better have a small car for! The decor was a bit dated, but functional. Our room was a ground level, Mayfair, as my mom has a bad knee & doesn't do stairs. Queen bed, twin bed and s couple chairs for seating were adequate, but not super comfortable . The woman who checked us in wasn't super friendly, but the one who checked us out was quite nice. I'd say it was ok for price & location, but not enough charm as I was hoping for based off description & pictures. read more

The walls are a bit thin so if you're unlucky and get a loud neighbor, that might be a problem. But if not, then it's great! Breakfast is pretty basic - hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, some fruit, danishes, and costco muffins that are cut up into many thin slices (I don't like when people do that). If you are looking for a quaint place to stay in an awesome location this is your place. Everything was within walking distance, beach, shopping, restaurants. We took our dog and had a blast. The room was small but comfortable with a fire place and small kitchen area. I loved our door, it opened from the top like a barn door. It was super cute and nice to have open while i drank coffee and put on my make up. Another nice touch was the covered parking with our room. Nice to know your car is safe and sound in a car port and we didn't have to search for parking. The price wasn't bad at all and we did have to pay a small extra fee for our pup, so if you're bringing a dog keep that in mind. They offer a continental breakfast every morning and sherry and port in the evening. Overall it was a very pleasant stay and I would stay again in a heart beat! read more

No one should stay in room 45 EVER! The bed is so uncomfortable. The walls are paper thin. I could hear the neighbors next door and all there children. Trying to forget.... This is NOT a real bed and BREAKFAST... Bed they have, breakfast is store-bought pastries, bagels and sliced cake-bread, coffee and Minute-maid orange juice. We didn't even eat breakfast there the 2nd day. I wish I could remember right now what room we stayed in to be fair with this review.... as soon as I do I will add it. We stayed in an upstairs room.... decor was tacky, bed and sheets were a little below average. It was very small and cramped. The sink dripped, and the best thing about the room was the fireplace... which we didn't really need for our trip, as the weather was very pleasant. The view out of the bathroom window was terrible. It was the back of some building that looked like it was an old soup kitchen or something... don't really know what it was, just that it was unpleasant and noisy. It was walking distance from everything, so that was great. The walls were thin, so we could hear our neighbors, and unfortunately, we had TERRIBLE neighbors. One night they were downstairs and two grown men were sabotaging their friend's car after a night of drinking and loud conversation - 2 a.m. They were destroying property. We called the police, but Carmel's finest walked up the driveway, saw nothing, and walked back out and left. Thanks. Not worth the money - we won't be back to this one. We stayed in the Somerset room which is one of their pet friendly rooms. I was very happy with the room which also included a fireplace and an assigned parking spot in the carport. Assigned parking spot = WINNER in parking cramped Carmel. l loved being to leave and not have to search for a parking spot when we returned. The mattress appeared to be pretty new as it was FIRM...(me likey). The room also included a kitchen, a flat screen and free wi-fi. We had a cute little patio with a table and chairs and we had a squirrel running around teasing our poor doggie. The walls are a tad thin. We could hear the people upstairs walking around but so what? I didn't expect a private bungalow or five star resort privacy for these prices. I've noticed other Yelpers complaining about the breakfast. It's a CONTINENTAL breakfast people. That means, muffins, bagels and maybe some O.J. It's NOT a sit down meal. Some of you people are so spoiled and/or idiots who don't know what a continental breakfast is. All the staff I came into contact with was helpful and friendly and the staff even left two doggie biscuits for our doggie in the room when we arrived. Cute! We loved our stay here and plan to return here on our next trip to Carmel. read more
