Regarding COVID protocols at the golf course. I didn't want to cause a stir but I thought it critically important for people to know.. I heard from an employee at the golf course that several of the employees in charge of cleaning golf carts, and sanitizing them after each use, have been neglecting their duty due to political views on the crisis and/or laziness. So If you choose to golf here, just know that your safety is in your own hands. The golf carts may have had days worth of play without any sanitizing to protect from the virus. I saw this as a critical for people to know, especially when the carts say they are sanitized and safe. This isn't the case with everyone washing carts, so I'm told, but at least 1 employee hasn't been protecting public health due to laziness or political orientation. read more

Asian American hate and discrimination is alive and well at the pool area in this so called 4-star resort! Imagine waiting for your pregnant wife while she's having a prenatal massage in the spa area. The spa clerk gives you the OKAY to wait in the pool area. You patiently wait in one of the chairs near the fire pit area five steps away from the spa entrance. 30 minutes in, you notice the pool service waiters are acknowledging and taking orders for other guests around you and pass you by like you are non-existent. This happens a second time and then a third time. An hour and 20 minutes in, with full sun and a warm 66 degrees at the 5:00 PM hour, a fourth waiter asks you how you are doing while lighting two menus on fire and gets the fire pit going. You ask him how he is doing and he says "good, the suns out." He walks away and the fire pit is well lit with flames blowing your direction forcing you to get out of the area. This has to be the most passive aggressive way of telling an Asian American guest to get the hell out! Don't get me started with the white "Karen" guest who placed a "social distancing" sign blantly in front of my view near the jacuzzi's. I'm fully vaccinated with a mask visibly in hand and beyond 6 feet away. And who was coughing and sneezing like a sick person with no mask? Someone in "Karen's" group of four. Carmel is a beautiful place, but Asian racism and discrimination is alive and well! All Asians must avoid this place entirely until the pool/bar staff is properly trained in customer service and cultural awareness!! read more

My wife Angie and I can't say enough great things about the resort, the staff and the overall ambiance. Another perfect stay at the Ranch As we've come to expect from the Ranch, our trip was relaxing and full of simple pleasures like hot baths, warm cookies, and good coffee. Simple doesn't mean ordinary, however, as we enjoyed our hot baths under the stars and our cookies and coffee in the comfort of our oversized bed. The grounds are family-friendly, but we come as a couple to unwind. We love the on-site bar and restaurant (best ceviche). Staff are attentive, but not intrusive. Service feels effortless. (Special thanks to Thomas, Jessica, Paul, and Omar whose attention to detail made the trip even more special for us.) Have stayed in quite a few hotels where if you request an early check-in, they try to accommodate you especially if accompanied by an infant. Not so here. I almost did not travel here cause of that reason. How am I supposed to change diapers for my kid when they don't give us a room and the men's restroom do not have a diaper changing stand. FYI, only reason I knock them for this is that if you bill yourself as an all-inclusive resort, these are questions which need to be dealt with - The staff are sticklers for policy and you don't get the feeling that they would go out of their way to make the guest's stay more accomodating. See above. Also, we had a fiasco with the card keys and had to go back multiple times to the front desk to get our keys activated. One of the card keys did not work. They would issue a new card and cancel all other card and hence we would be stuck again. Considering how big the resort is, it is a huge time sink to have to deal with this. - While the amenities itself were clean, the towels and the bathrobes were dirty and had stains in them (both in the room and also at the swimming pool) Additionally, I felt the ranch could have more flotation devices at the swimming pool, especially for little kids read more

I have had excellent experiences at the Ranch. I've stayed at the hotel many times and recently had a fantastic massage treatment from Craig. Craig was professional, courteous and addressed many areas that have been in pain for years. From check in to check out, it was a superb experience! This place is definitely not worth the price. My wife requested an early check in 2 months prior to our stay and were told we would be accommodated. On our arrival date, we called at 1:30pm and were told our room was ready but needed inspection before it could be released to us. Showed up at 2:30pm and walked into the lobby to check in. Room still not ready. Girls at front desk were rude and seemed to careless. Again, told us they just needed to inspect our room but would for sure be ready by their "guaranteed 4pm check in!" Well, 4:30pm came and went and still no phone call from the hotel. I then called and voiced my frustrations with the manager who said room would be ready shortly and that compensation would be granted for our inconvenience. At 4:45pm received a call stating our room was now ready. I walked into the lobby and was immediately met by the manager who apologized for the inconvenience. He mentioned that he wanted to make it up to us by giving us a $100 credit to use at the resort. I agreed and was satisfied with his response; however, the customer service throughout the remainder of our stay was poor. The employees throughout the resort are rude, not engaging, and do the bare minimum. My wife and I commented to each other several times that the employees seem so miserable and must hate their jobs. My guess it's a lack of pay or poor leadership at the top. This place would be a perfect candidate for Undercover Boss. Definitely not worth the big $$$$ per night rate. read more

We just returned from our babymoon and it was perfection! We started with the Clubhouse brunch, which was such a treat!! Graham was our waiter and so helpful, as were the rest of the clubhouse staff! We treated ourselves to the lavender lemonade, which was so refreshing. Since we can't have a babymoon every weekend, we will certainly indulge in the fantastic brunch!! We were then greeted to a bottle of sparkling apple cider upon checking into our hotel, which was so thoughtful! Everything was exceptional. Being locals, it felt as though we were on a private vacation. We left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. We will be back for another overnight stay and to enjoy the brunch! read more

Lisa helped upgrade our room and got us a last minute room reservation even though all WEB sites I had previously looked at showed the ranch booked solid for the 3 days we wanted. Very accommodating to our dude Sophie (ask for the doggie menu). $100 pet fee. Food at the clubhouse is not as good as the restaurant at the lodge which was closed for breakfast and lunch due to remodeling. The continental breakfast was way good at the clubhouse and free. We were annoyed to get kicked out of the pool at River Ranch on Saturday AM because we had Sophie and there was a swimming aerobic class scheduled. We would have used the spa pool (we tried it earlier but it was freezing). They told us the temperature was 80+. Not! To their credit they called the engineer ASAP and got it fixed. We had a possessed radio that kept turning on at odd times. We kept unplugging it but maids kept plugging in. The CC on TV remote didn't work and I had no captions. Shoulda brought my hearing aid. Foiled! Fish was so good at the Lodge. And the Fall Fruit Salad, Creme Brulee, Crab cakes. Heard the burger at the Clubhouse is divine but we were at the beach all 3 days showing Sophie a good time. Place was packed but it felt like we had it to ourselves. Loved the coots on the golf course. Who was the crazy bugger chasing them around on the golf cart?? read more

We were checked in to a wrong room because our room wasn't ready. Told our room would be ready after dinner. Try to go to dinner but dinning room has a wait of 2.5 hours. So we drive off the premises with tired children then come back and check in once again. They say that they've been busy and haven't delivered our luggage into the new room yet. We wait, with tired children, for our bags. In the morning, there is an army of ants in the bathroom sink and toilet. My son says ants were crawling on him when he woke up. Engineering comes by to spray 8:30am. In the afternoon, I see more ants in the bathroom and toilet. Engineering comes back with a spray bottle. Half hour later, more ants. Children signed up for bathbomb making class, $35/60min/per child. My children were released after 30minutes. Unimpressive, so far. read more

I live about 25 minutes away and only came for the golf course and it did not disappoint. Overall a very scoreable resort type course, but in great shape tee to green. Just before we teed off on 1 to start our round, the starter, Jack, gave us a great lay of the land and some tips to play well. He was extremely nice, funny, and put us in an even better mood than we were even when we already knew we were golfing! Only giving 4 stars (which really should be 5) because 2nd tee box was not in use and a temporary tee was in place which made the par 4 a longish par 3. As a golfer I understand maintenance is very important and appreciate a facility that takes care if the course and puts money back in to keep it sharp. Still played hole 2 as a par 4 and made birdie however! (Birdie with an asterisk) Overall a great day, great course, friendly staff (did the best they could despite COVID safety protocols), and I hope to return prior to moving from the area next June 2021. read more

For my hubby's Xmas / Birthday present, I decided to get him (and well, me too!) a New Years weekend getaway at Carmel Valley Ranch. It was such a great place to really relax and get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful in every way. They even sent us a complimentary bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for Mikie's Birthday! Our suite had a private balcony AND a private jacuzzi - which I only discovered on our second day there! Very nice and great place for 'sexy time'. ;-) Don't worry no one can see you while you're in the jacuzzi - at least I dont' think they can *guulp*. Our king sized bed and wood burning fireplace made me want to skip out on exploring Carmel and Monterey and sleep in all day - which is what we ended up doing one night. I seriously have not felt that relaxed in a long time. I need to go back asap! As for the room service, our server was excellent. He set up our meal, complete with a white tablecloth. He was very friendly and not intrusive at all, which we very much appreciated. They only downside was that the food wasn't super duper warm, but then again, that's to be expected with room service. I want to give them 5 stars - I really really do! But as Lauren W. mentions in her review, they could stand to upgrade a couple of minor things, and take care of their little ant problem. Carmel Valley Ranch far exceeded our expectations. It is beautiful, luxurious, and fun. The 500 acre property is gorgeous with a friendly staff and reminded us of a summer camp for grownups. Although the ranch is known for being child and dog friendly, my wife and I had an incredible, kid free experience, so the property definitely caters to all sorts of guests. So I had my wedding there this September 2011 and while the views and scenery is picture perfect (literally picture perfect my pictures came out great) the whole wedding process with them was less than perfect. We first looked at Carmel Valley Ranch when they were in the middle of the remodel and while I didn't mind having to imagine things I did mind the 3 different personnel changes that happened during my planning process. Our first person Gillian was amazing from the start she was on top of everything. If I emailed her she had an answer for me within 24 hours and always willing to help and give suggestions on how to set things up etc... Gillian however left for a bigger and better opportunity and one can't blame her but the second person that I worked with was less than satisfactory. I believe her name was Heather she was only there for about 5 months and if I emailed her asking the size of tables and if she could send me a picture of they patio furniture it took 2 weeks or more. If fact I had to send another email to her to see if she got my first email. Not the best thing for a nervous busy bride. After Heather left I believe it was another month till they gave us Jessica and let me tell you she was the worst of them all. Hardly got back to an email, my wedding planner and I were calling her a month before the big day to get answers from her. I understand that she was put into this at the last minute but when you spend $$$$ with them for your wedding your contact person needs to be on top of everything no matter what the situation. While my wedding turned out great I mainly have my wedding planner to thank for that cause she handle CVR perfectly and didn't let them phase her one bit. read more

Just got back from here. Overall our experience was OK. But wanted to list out some pros and cons Pros 1. The ranch is beautiful, they have hiking trails, huge golf course if you like to play golf, hilltop yoga platform and close to 500 acres of lush greenery around you. 2. There's deer, quail and turkery running around although we only spotted the deer and quail. 3. They have beautiful swings around the property, one especially under a huge tree which was relaxing, overlooking the valley. 4. We stayed in the hilltop premium suite, paid close to 600 per night, supposed to be one of the best rooms to stay in, the room itself was huge, there was a separate living room, huge bathroom with a tub and separate shower area and a nice cozy bedroom with fireplace. Had two tv's in the room, but didn't really prove to be worthy. And a nice big balcony. Ask for the corner room if you decide to stay here, we got the corner room and it was beautiful. 5. They had a 47 dollar credit towards breakfast and 50 dollar credit towards dining or resort activities which was useful. Cons 1. The in-suite dining menu is terrible. On some of the days their lines were simply busy for hours together and we had to go and have dinner at their Lodge restaurant, was not especially excited about long walks during the winter season when you'd rather spend the night watching a movie next to the fireplace with dinner at your room. Even if you decided to drive down to the Lodge, when paying close to 600 per night you would expect more. 2. Service is simply too clumsy and terrible. If you are thinking of going here for the service you can stop right here, I'd recommend the Ritz Carlton instead. The guy who took the order for the in-suite dining was rude on the phone. He should be taught how to speak with courtesy. 3. On all 3 days that we stayed our room key card got discharged on almost all the days. This was so annoying as we had to walk down to the lobby or my husband drive down to get it re-charged. 4. There are no amenities in the room. No shower cap which is weird, even motel 6 seems to have one. :| They also didn't replace our soap, shampoo, or bother to add in more laundry bags, although we had used up everything. They didn't replace the water bottles, we called them over and over again on one day after which I think they got some sense to do the room service correctly. But don't expect much from the room, they don't keep a wine bottle either. We won't be going back again. read more

Overall very disappointed with our stay. The room is great but the lighting is poor. At around noon I told the front desk that the light behind the bed did not work, There was not a listing of TV channels, and either I was not smart enough to figure out how to set the clock as it is showing the wrong time or our clock is broken. The front desk associate was very apologetic and said that she would have it taken care of ASAP. Got back to our room 6 hours later and none of it was fixed. Called the front desk and the same person that I spoke to originally answered the phone and was extremely apologetic again and said that someone would be right there to take care of it. An hour later someone came to drop off the TV listing and I asked if he new how to set the clock he said no but would try. He concluded that the clock was broken and would have a new one sent. Never heard from anyone. My wife had a massage and thought it was good but said that the room was freezing. Sitting outside it was very cold so I asked if they could light the fire pit. The person was very nice a said that someone would be out right away to light it. 30 minutes later I went to ask again and when the person finally came everyone around the pit just laughed as we thought they were never coming to light it. With all of the people sitting outside I would have thought that they would have an attendant outside to order food and drinks. Ordered room service and the food was cool but the spinach dip was so cold that the cheese on top was hard. Called room service to let them know they apologized and would send another one right away. About 45 minutes later they brought us another one. It was at least warm but not hot. For the prices that they charge I would expect a much higher service level. The service level defiantly does not equal the prices. I would recommend that the manager pay to stay as a guest at a comparable hotel to understand and set clear expectations of service levels. read more

Check in was easy and cozy. I love the tea selection in the lobby in the mornings. We enjoyed the fireside Smores every night. Rooms were spacious and warm. Shuttles were fast and helpful. Our "Naturalist" Rachel that took us on hikes was friendly and patient with our small child, and our experience feeding chickens and goats was super fun. If I had to be picky, I would say the Ranch should invest in toilet paper...at such a nice place, they should have something better than a single-ply cheap TP. read more

I thought long and hard about what I wanted to say in this review. In the end, I am going to go with a 2 star review. For a Labor Day/ early birthday weekend away trip I was dead set on getting a massage. My boyfriend and I researched the many options in Monterey and Carmel. We went with Carmel Valley Ranch's in-house spa for our couples massage on August the 31st.. I inquired whether I could get a mimosa when at the spa. I was told by the very friendly spa staffer that I could get a mimosa before or after the massage at the pool area directly next door so she suggested I bring a swim suit to enjoy the pool in. Perfect! What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. At least this is what I thought at the time I booked. The day of the massage was a beautiful sunny day- often rare on Labor Day on the coast. The massage was excellent and refreshing. I didn't mind paying the price for a day of luxury and relaxation. After the couples' massage, we went to enjoy the pool as suggested again by the spa staffer who assisted us. We went and found chairs at the pool. I immediately started looking around for a pool waiter to put in an order. (We had not eaten before the massage so we were both starving after our 90 minute massage.) A waiter made eye contact with me and then walked to our neighbor to take his drink order. So I waited patiently. Another 10 minutes pass in which the neighbor had been brought his drink order, and two couples have been seated and their drink orders taken. Ten more minutes pass by and we are starting to get irritated and more hungry. Three more couples in the mean time are seated and enjoying appetizers and drinks. I walk over to the waiter station after another ten minutes of no service and ask if I can have a menu. The young staffer said, "Of course!" I go back to my chair and proceed to pick out items that my boyfriend and I would like to eat. We wait another 15 minutes and NO ONE BOTHERS TO COME OVER. At this point I am beyond upset, insulted and famished. We pick up our belongings, return to the spa to change, and leave to spend our money elsewhere to have a nice late lunch. I will never book anything at this place again. Despite the amazing view and tranquil environment at the "adult pool" and excellent spa services- the trip was a complete waste of time and money. I went to have a great early birthday having a massage to relax and be calm and instead end up leaving angry and stressed out. The payment for the spa treatment was a TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY if it was just going to get reversed by rude and non-attentive pool waiters. I would suggest getting spa services elsewhere so you can actually enjoy yourself afterwards, like every other location I have had a massage at. Had I known their service was this poor, I would have not paid to have my massage done at a four star hotel to have two star service. I wish I could have asked for a refund right then and there. read more

Excellent resort, lots to do on property, and amazing views! We had a room with an outdoor tub overlooking the golf course and vineyard. There's hiking all over the property; the sunset hike is 100% worth it on a clear night! Service was impeccable, the valet escorts you to your room (the property is very large), housekeeping and front desk were very attentive. The only reason for 4 stars is the food on property was okay, only one restaurant on the whole resort. Very romantic resort, it was perfect for our anniversary. We will absolutely return!! read more

The food at the lodge was terrible. There was an eaten pepper on our plate. They made a lame excuse that the tops pop off when the pepper gets too hot, but these peppers were not cooked. What happens when you put cold tomatoes, ice cold lettuce, and refrigerated cheese onto a hot burger? You get a cold burger. Not good, the chef seems to take no pride or care in his craft. I would give this resort 3.5 stars. After reading the glowing reviews on trip advisor, I thought this place would be magical. It was pretty nice, but someone compared it to the Four Seasons. Really? I don't think so. First of all, the resort is huge, it took me at least 20+ min. to get from our room to the kids area (cottage), and it's not a flat hike either. Way too far, in my opinion, especially with a 2.5 year old. Second, our room was really far and to access it, we had to climb a flight of stairs. This might have been ok had I not been 7.5 months pregnant. Third, there was so many bugs around, daily there were pill bugs (rolly pollies) in our room and tons outside, spiders, etc. and the general cleanliness of housekeeping was not as great as I would expect for a high end resort. I was hoping to enjoy their organic garden and chicken coop, but it was nothing to rave about. The garden is nice and so is the chicken coop but I'm not sure why they don't let the chickens just wander around. They do get props for delicious room service food though! Amazingly gigantic portions and delicious, since the food comes from their onsite restaurant. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but I would not consider this resort stellar. read more

My husband and I reserved an hour to play on their clay tennis court. I reserved via phone, and was entertained professionally by the gentleman. My gripe was that the concierge, upon checking in, was quite condescending. The lady informed us pointedly that we are only paying for the court, and were not allowed to use the other facilities. That was obvious to us, since we weren't hotel guests. We mainly wanted to try out the clay court. However, the way she said it was VERY rude. The insinuation caught me off-guard. If the establishment allows non-guests to use their facilities for a fee, I believe they should be treated with the same professionalism as their guests. As for the courts, it was okay i suppose. I've never played on clay before. However, the way we were treated would make me think twice about going back there. read more
