Ok, so I heard a LOT about this place and people were telling me it's better than Chukis which is a bold statement and wow it was AMAZING. I got one of each taco and even the vegetarian (mushroom) was really great.I love how they crisp up the tortillas so it's got a nice crunch and it's just real good regardless. I only tried their tacos, but I am very impressed. I'll still go to Tacos Chukis for sure because it's a different vibe but taco v taco you can't go wrong. Definitely pay attention to when they are open. It's an order at the window situation and I didn't see what their indoor eating situation is. Great tacos here! One of the very few taco spots in Seattle actually hand making their tortillas. I tried the carne asada, pastor, and adobada and all were excellent. Meat was tender and flavorful, guac and cilantro were fresh and the salsa had a nice smokey flavor. Comes with lime and also these surprisingly tasty carrots . I also tried the horchata, it was okay but not my favorite. Cinnamon was pretty faint and it tasted more like milk than anything. Pricing is on par with other taco shops in the area ~$2.75 each but definitely feels more worth since you're getting the hand made tortilla. The staff were very friendly and my order was made quickly. Street parking is available but usually crowded. There is a parking lot next to the shop but its for a different business. I have been hesitant to write a review of this place because it is so good and such a great value, but the popularity is growing regardless. The place is not much to look at--a small part of a convenience store with a window that faces outside and no interior seating. You line up at one window, place your order, then pick it up at the other. I have been here about ten times and always get an assortment of street tacos (usually three or four fill me up). Apparently people either hate or love Carmelo's. As for me, I enjoyed it, although I still prefer Tacos Chukis just very slightly more in terms of quality. However, there is a bit more solid variety here, whereas I only truly enjoy the house tacos at Chukis, so it's about equal. I ordered 1 of each of the meat tacos: Al Pastor, Pollo, Asada, and Campechano. They were fairly priced at $2.65 each plus tax, so it was a filling affordable meal! The tacos are plated nicely and are served with pickled vegetables (carrots and onions) plus lime. All these tacos were great, just that the Pollo (chicken) was a bit dry so I wouldn't recommend it as much as the other ones. Al pastor is solid and on par with Leo's Tacos back in LA which was one of my favorites (major difference is the pineapple and meat here are more finely sliced), and the campechano was very flavorful. The downside of these tacos is that you have to consume them immediately, or the quality will degrade significantly. My last taco which was about 8 min after I got the food had somewhat soggy shells already. There's unfortunately no actual seating, with the closest seating a few yards away that's more of a mini area with community game tables and some seating, which may or may not work out if it rains. read more

This place is like a Togo place for tacos. You order at a window and they give you a number. Once your order is ready, they call your number so you can go collect your food. We get here around 11:30 on a Tuesday. The tacos here looked really good. You eat with your eyes as much as with smell. I am from CA so it wouldn't be a completely fair comparison since I can get different types of tacos where I'm from. That includes street tacos, tacos from food trucks, restaurants and taquerias. The tacos here are decent, but I prefer the ones from home. I also had their special Taco, which was the cactus Taco. It was not my cup of tea so I will avoid it next time. But the carne asada and chicken Taco I got were good. I also opted for the horchata, which honestly, was a little disappointing to me. I wish it had more flavor since it was bland and tasted watered down. They have two picnic style benches and tables right next to the ordering window so seating is limited. My group was lucky enough to get a bench to ourselves since we beat the lunch rush by about 15 minutes or so. By the time we were done eating, a line has formed and there was a small group of people waiting for their orders. Overall, if you're craving tacos, this place will satisfy that craving. read more

After seeing so many reviews and hearing about this place, I finally had the chance to check it out. It's located right inside a grocery market in Capitol hill. The menu is limited to only 5 types of tacos,and we ordered all 5 to give it a try. I definitely like the veggies and vegan one, as the flavor profile was unique and it was balance. This place is great for authentic street tacos if you're hungry and need a quick bite. Located in cap hill, this taco window has everything you need. The menu is small only consisting of the staples like tacos, burritos and quesadillas, but delicious none the less. We were really disappointed, based on the reviews we expected so much more. We called in an order, the man taking the call was very pleasant and understood me perfectly. We split a campechano burrito without beans, an al pastor quesadilla, and a carne asada quesadilla with a side of rice. Rice was decent. Burrito was ok, I did not get any of the potato from the campechano mix in my half and there was very little meat (chorizo & steak). The quesadillas were a big disappointment. Half of the quesadilla was on top of the other half so it was pretty soggy. Way too much cheese and not melted very well. Again, very little meat on either. The Al pastor had way more pineapple than meat. The highlight of the meal was the Jamaica Agua Fresca beverage. I might even go back just for that. Maybe their tacos are better, but we are not big corn tortilla fans (they are supposedly house made) although I doubt they would have much meat-as that sadly seemed to be the theme in our meals. Wow, I've lived down the street for a while now and Carmelo's used to be a staple of mine. It had been maybe a year since my last visit. I ordered a carne asada burrito which was only okay (to be expected i.e. You get what you pay for) Nopal, Adobado, and El Pastor Tacos were just awful. I wish they were flavorless, instead they carried the flavor of what I could only describe as "the big stink". The Nopal was a bastardized version of a good classic with terrible texture and worse flavor. Not sure how you mess up rice and beans in a commercial kitchen but at least now I know that it can be done. Service was friendly. Oh well, at least I'm not hungry anymore. I guess I'll begin by saying that I'm originally from San Diego, so I've been spoiled by tacos done RIGHT. My wife and I moved up here in August, and while we were prepared to endure life without California burritos, carne asada fries, and Tijuana-style taquerias, we were ever hopeful that we'd at least find some place that would bring a hint of taco satisfaction for these two weary transplants. And then, my co-worker (a native Houstonian, who at least knows decent Mexican food) told us about Carmelo's - reluctantly breaking his secretive oath to not reveal this location without taking us there personally ("i can't tell you what it's called, but I can take you!"). You still with me? Cool! Let's talk about tacos now. We rolled up to this unassuming location connected to a liquor store. Literally just a window to order at, and some picnic tables for dining. We get to order and find some mainstay classics (carne asada, al pastor, etc.). I was a little disheartened that they didn't have any of the weird meats (tripa, lengua, cabeza etc.), but we held fast. I order a sample of the ones that sounded appealing: asada, al pastor, and campechano. My wife got a burrito. We grab some drinks and await with great anticipation. Will this finally provide us with some reprieve? Or will we be forced to continue trudging the harsh desert of Mexican food that is Seattle? We hear our number called and I rush to grab the trays. The tacos look fantastic, but be still my heart, for looks do not tell all. I sit down, distribute the goods, my wife and I look at each other, nod, and get to business. The tacos are beautiful. The asada has a nice heap of meat, with cilantro, onions, and a healthy amount of guacamole accented by some red salsa. The al pastor was nice and red, with some bits of pineapple, salsa and guacamole. Even the campechano looked beautiful, with the bits of potatoes that added beauty to the mix of pork and beef. I could tell the tortillas were gonna be good , as you could see that the beautiful yellow corn happy circles were likely no older than a few minutes after being freshly made. The taste: it was great! The asada was nice and charred but tender, all the accoutrements were fresh and flavorful, the tortillas were my standout winner -- and the al pastor was ok. It definitely wasn't the fresh-off-the-trompo gold that I have grown accustomed to, but it pays the debt all the same. The burrito was also ok, but that journey will continue. All In all, I loved this place. It gave us the fix we needed, and look forward to returning again and again. Best tacos ever? Not on the name of Benito Juárez. But Carmelo's Tacos is undoubtedly a beacon of good tacos in an otherwise very, very dark place -- taco-wise. Tl;dr: tacos are fantastic!
