Watch out! Our dog only has an allergic reaction when going to the small dog park at Carmichael park! She literally will choke and cough for 12 hours after going to this place. We have had her checked by our vet and she has no condition to cause this sort of reaction, so the park is suspect all day long. I don't know if they are putting chemicals on the grass, or what, but this is bs and we will never take my dog there again. Two weekends in a row now she has had an allergic reaction from going there. I hear other dogs coughing and gagging while there as well. Amazing that this park offers so many amenities and is clean as it is, because its run by volunteers only. A very roomy large dog park and a separate small dog park have nice lawns, tables and provide doggy bags. Membership is optional, but it is a big bang for the buck...really inexpensive. We stopped by this dog park on a trip passing through Sac. There are 2 separate areas - one for large dogs and one for small dogs. We have a larger dog, so we went to that section of the dog park. There was a walking trail around the fenceline, so we walked while our dog played. There was some grass, but mostly just dirt for the dogs to run around in (this would be a very muddy dog park after any amount of rain). The people that we interacted with were nice and the dogs seemed to get along (the dog parents all seemed to supervise appropriately and didn't let any dog interactions get out of hand). We may be back in the future when we drive through the area. read more

I come here in the early mornings (6 AM!) to get in a good morning run - rain or shine, and my 60+ lb gsd LOVES it. It's big enough for her to run around, but still contained so I do not have to worry about traffic. There are a few interesting drivers, but all in all, I would say a safe area. Usually there's a softball game every weekend, so parking (curbside) is limited, and every Sunday - yes, rain or shine! - there's an awesome ,DOG FRIENDLY, farmer's market. read more

I actually avoided this dog park for awhile because of an initial "ok" experience and some of the reviews on here. However, recently I decided to venture back because it is so close to where I live, which makes it a lot more convenient than the other local dog parks. I've been here three times since, all on a weekday evening. The good: huge area for the large dogs to run around, with plenty of grass. Dogs have plenty of space to play with each other, or wander away if needed. The main sitting area is also away from the entrance, so I don't feel like my dog gets mobbed when we first get in. All the dogs so far have been really friendly and well socialized. It definitely seems like there is a regular good sized group of people who go at the time I have been going, which is nice. People are friendly and seem to care about how their dogs are acting/reacting. Poop bag canisters are always well stocked. The ok: along with the grass there is also a lot of dirt and some muddy areas, which is a bummer when my dumb dog decides he wants a mud bath... The bad: out of all the parks I've been to, this place seems the worst with owners cleaning up after their pets. I understand its a grassy area and sometimes hard to find, but I keep an eagle eye on my dog at all times and usually after doing a few minutes of searching, am able to find where he pooped. Along the way I usually find 3-4 older poop piles. I pick up what I can, but it would be nice if people were more considerate about that. No one wants to step in poop, or have it get on their dog to bring back into their car. There also tend to be some homeless always walking around the park as other reviews have mentioned. However, I haven't been bothered by them. I feel like there are less around right now too because its summer and there appears to be a lot of sporting/family activities going on in the evening. Carmichael Park is by far my favorite in the area. Green lawn, nice walking track around the grass, large shade trees, separate big and small dog areas, and lots of friendly dogs and people. This is a really nice park. The park closes at 11pm, the lights in the dog park go out at 10pm exactly, year round. read more

I've been on a mission to find the best dog parks in the Sacramento area. After getting my weekend Dutch Bros I jumped on Yelp and did a search, this place came up so I decided to check it out. Eh, it's okay. First, the dog park is in the back of the park, so if you enter through the main entrance, keep driving and you will eventually see it. There is both a large and small dog area which are surprisingly about the same size. It's nice that they have lots of seating, however, it seems that most people huddle on the side of the park near the fence which doesn't really create much interaction between the pooches but it does appear to save the grass/weeds/green patches. Water stations are available as well as potty bags. All of the dogs are relatively well behaved and there are definitely regulars that stake their claim on what is appropriate and not appropriate. Overall, not a bad spot, but probably wouldn't go out of my way to take my lil man back. read more

Quite a large park with more than one hose spigot for refilling dog bowls and what not. Kiddie pool some dogs love to splash and cool off inside of. A few times, owners with both a small and larger breed will bring both into the big boy yard and go on their own walk within the yard - putting everyone else on guard to watch that the little guy doesn't get harmed, A lot of nice mature trees here and it never feels hot. Hello Yelpers! So the park is just completing a significant renovation that included new drainage (no more mud holes in winter!), expansion of the small dog side of the park, additional sally-port added at other end, more trees, lighting and new grass. We are celebrating with a ribbon cutting on Sept 14, 2014 at noon. I have been involved with the park for about 4 years and like all things that rely on volunteers, the park has its ups and downs. For example- volunteers work daily to pick up after inconsiderate dog owners who don't clean up after their dogs, pick up garbage, refill those 'free' poop bags dispensers, raise money to pay for the $40,000 that the membership contributed to the $80,000 renovations, replace the water and trash containers that go missing regularly, stock supplies for the park, etc. Volunteers also work to raise safety awareness and guidelines for using the park. I bring my 4 dogs here (105 lb, 60 lb, 13 lb and 11 lb) and always use the large dog side with no problems. Occasionally dogs need help socializing, but I have never felt unsafe or that my dogs were unsafe. As a community of users, if you see someone or someone's dog being unsafe or thoughtless, please politely bring it to their attention. There is no "park police" to make sure that folks are using the park appropriately...just us fellow dog lovers. Looking forward to seeing everyone there soon!!! I'll upgrade to 5 Stars when we get to the next step of the renovations- more shade structures, a dog wash station and some permanent agility games. read more

I looked online while the park was closed for renovations and the images of what it was going to be and what it is don't quite match up. So I was a little disappointed at the get go. Overall though the park is nice for our two smaller (12-13 lbs) dogs to run around. I like that there is a separate area just for the smaller dogs. Some of the owners are really rude, don't pick up after their pets, or they stand around and smoke and/or play their obscenity-laced music (I guess ear buds are not an option for them) while they ignore their dogs, but that might happen anywhere I guess. Once we had to leave because one owner had a very aggressive dog and refused to control it. The parking lot at this park leaves a lot to be desired so drive slowly and watch for potholes. And, as other reviewers have noted, there seem to be some patrons who basically live in their trailers near the park and come park all day for their dogs to be outside. It's weird to me, but we haven't had any problems with them, and who am I to judge? As long as your dog is polite I'm fine with it. read more

Not that many dogs when I went. Plenty in the big dog area but very few(2) in the small dog area. Had a lot of dog cleaning supplies like soggy bags and scoops. Very clean park just wished that the sizes of both were equal. Parking is also limited since you have to share with people who are hosting parties and events at the park. read more

Not the fanciest dog park in Northern California, but if you want your dog to smile, this is the place. The small dog portion is very small, people complain, but proportionally, it's okay. The big dog side is much better. The non-profit group that oversee's the dog park has done a better job with cleanliness, drainage, etc. What happened to their website (carmichaeldogpark.com)? Looks like political infighting did them in... Don't worry, go to http://www.carmichaeldogpark.us for info & directions! We take in the Farmers Market at Carmichael Park on Sundays & walk over to the Canine Corral to play ball with our dog. My only complaint would be with the losers that don't pick up their dogs business. Do they think there is some vacuum that come out at night to clean up? Small dogs really get the short end of the stick at this park. The large dog side looks like a lot of fun, but my (shy-at-first, has been attacked and traumatized by large dogs) Jack-Chi mix only uses the small dog area, and that side is pretty pathetic. I know there are plans to renovate the park and enlarge the small dog area, so hopefully that happens because as it stands now, the small dog area is no bigger than a typical Carmichael backyard. My husband and I have found the other small dogs enjoying the park to be well behaved and their owners, very attentive. It's usually a mix of shy dogs and hyper dogs, and we've never witnessed any real problems. Sure, sometimes an overly enthusiastic puppy might not recognize the signals a timid dog is sending to back off, but we've never seen anything a warning snap (not bite) couldn't solve. I feel comfortable taking my Gizmo girl here, but it's definitely only for the socialization because she has more space to run around in our yard at home. read more

Amazing area! Well cleaned and lots of water stations and the fences and gates are in amazing condition. There were plenty of supplies for those of us whose leashes were one baggie too short. The two areas are separated for large and small dogs. I went to this dog park for years. I started regularly taking my two "little dogs" in 2008 and went ALL the time until 2012. I was, at one time, even involved in the board meetings and "politics" of the place. Sounds silly, but you wouldn't believe the politics crap with Parks and Rec. I made many friends at the dog park, some who I still keep in regular contact with. :) Now, the dog park itself could definitely use some improvements, which I hear are underway now... finally! What I really liked about the park was the availability of separate "small dog" and "big dog" areas. As the owner of two small fur-babies, I definitely do not want my little ones mixing with Rottweilers and German Shepards. (They could easily get hurt on pure accident). So the small dog side was awesome for us. (Some parks I've visited only had one area for all dogs). The people I met and the fun conversations I had there added to the great experience. The other dog owners were a wealth of knowledge and information. We would all sit around (sometimes for a couple hours) and talk about our doggies, tips and tricks, advice, our lives... everything. My husband even started playing cribbage weekly with another dog park regular while the dogs played. I truly enjoyed the people and watching my little ones play with all the other little guys and have a blast. Sometimes, in the spring/summer evenings mostly, there would be 20-30 small dogs, on our side alone, running around having a great time! In the summer they even had a little baby pool for the dogs to wade in. Also lots of water bowls, plastic chairs, free pet waste bags and trash cans. I never had any issue there, with owners or dogs. Unfortunately, the park became a little rundown. It lacked appropriate lighting for nighttime dog-parking and eventually there was barely any grass left. It became a dirt/dust bowl. The dog park board members were fighting for funds to make improvements, but they weren't getting anywhere for a long while. I still admire their dedication and perseverance. Looks like they finally got things rolling as the dog park is closed for renovations as I write this. YAY! :) Overall, this park alone basically socialized my first dog! (I can't recommend enough socializing your dogs.. do it... it's amazing!) We started taking him as soon as he had all his shots... he was still a baby. He's almost 6 now and gets along with all sorts of other animals and all people. I attribute much of his awesome personality to our regular dog park trips. My second dog didn't get to go as much, but I know socializing her there helped her insecure nature and made her much more calm around people and other animals. The big dog side would often have "dog fights"... NOT INTENTIONALLY, but often we would hear dogs growling and getting into it. Of course, the owners broke it up quickly, but I always thought that side was slightly dangerous. Two or three times I actually saw owners get into fist fights over dogs being "aggresive" and so on. Too bad the improvements took so long to happen. :( I'm really looking forward to checking out the new and improved Carmichael Canine Corral when the renovations are done. My dog loves it here. The people and other dogs are usually nice. Pretty clean also. We have gone every weekend for a month and we love it.

This dog park is totally operated by the volunteers and the non profit that collects membership fees, $25 a year. Cheep at any price for what you get. There is a discount if you pay for 3 years. The county and/ or Carmichael Park & Rec do not contribute any thing, except mowing of grass and watering. It is a nice friendly area, easy parking and busy, so your pup will have friends to play with. The board always seems to be working to improve the grounds. The latest project is to re fix the muddy spots in both the small and large dog areas. I have read the reviews and some of the comments are the same comments you see in all dog park reviews. Use to bring my small dog to this park daily. There are plenty of chairs to sit in, random toys, nice grass & mostly friendly people. I have now stopped coming to this park because of the inconsiderate dog owners. If your dog shows agressive behavior towards other dogs at the park and you as the owner don't care or refuse to acknowledge it then that is a problem. I gave it 2 stars due to this issue. Can't deal with irresponsible dog owners & will not subject my dog to the constant bullying of a few dogs. read more

This park has two separate fenced area. A huge park for the big dogs and a small one for little dogs. I have a large dog and a small dog so I use both. I would give the large dog side a 5 star rating. It is huge with lots of trees and stuff for the dogs to sniff. There are always lots of friendly people and dogs in there. My big guy always has a blast! The owners on the big dog side tend to be friendly and very attentive to their pets. The small dog side SUCKS, I would give it 1 star. It is a small dirt area. Not much for my little guy to check out. What makes it even worse is the people. There is a group of old bittys and a couple surly rude men that have taken up residence here. Many afternoons and evenings I have been here, at least some of them are there. Usually between 3-8 of them. They are rude and nasty and their dogs are even worse. I have a puppy who wants to run and play with the other dogs but if he gets close to these dogs, they snarl, chase him away and bite him and their owners do nothing! When your at a dog park you CAN NOT allow your dog to snarl, snap, and especially bite! What is wrong with these people?! Their dogs sit on there lap or under their chair and just wait to attack other dogs. They use all the chairs and form a large circle which encompasses almost 1/2 of the small dog park, meaning my dog is stuck using a 10 by 10 area unless he wants to get aggressively chased and bit. I have talked to other dog owners who have come in, and they feel the same way. Also, some small dog owners told me they feel forced to take their little ones in the big dog area because they do not want their dogs chased or bit. These few wretched, unhappy people have ruined what there is of this park, for everyone else. When there are not a lot of dogs in the big dog side, I will take my little guy in there, but at only 6 lbs, I can't chance taking him in there when it is busy. read more

This was our second time coming to this dog park. The first time we brought our 5 month old lab puppy. He was a little shy and kind of bullied by one of the feisty smaller dogs there. Today was our second time going giving it another try hoping for a better experience. Our now, 6 month old puppy was immediately met by a huge white and grey pit bull that started acting aggressively toward him, which escalated into our puppy being cornered into the side of the gate and this dog standing over him, snarling and biting him. The owner made zero eye contact with us but did get his dog off of ours and then left. We were kind of shaken up, but our dog bounced back quickly. He ended up playing with all the other dogs great and had a good time. We have had great experiences at other dog parks in the area. But this one has 2 strikes against us. Not sure if we will be back. One nice thing is there is a lot of shade. There are also for the most part very friendly people there. read more

First of all, even though there is separate areas for small dogs, people brought their small dogs into the big dog area. The little dogs were aggressive towards the big dogs. It was uncomfortable to say the least. Aside from the bugs, the dog park was decent. Perhaps I'll attend this dog park again one day and increase my rating if no bugs are present. There's water and usually a kiddie pool or two for the doggies to splash in. Lots of balls. A few pooper scoopers. The best part is the park is shadded. Downside is that it can get muddy in the winter. The people are nice, though when my dog was a pup, it was terrorized by a fairly large (friendly but dopey) pit bull pup. Nice enough but my first time going, I stepped in dog poop twice! After only being there about 30 min-1 hr max. And there's plenty of poop bags and trash cans. I like to get my dads older dog out of the house for him from time to time, and this park is always a let down. Most of the time there's no dogs here, I've gone at various times of the day and always the same thing. When it's not completely empty, there's still only a couple of people. Fights break out often, the dogs and the people around. And the park itself outside the dog area always seems to have weird stuff going down and there's a lot of homeless people around. I don't bother trying here anymore after hearing that someone was walking through the dog area intentionally throwing broken glass and tacks all over the ground. Disturbing. No thanks. read more

Good dog park. Needs improvements. Only had one bad encounter here with an old lady who came in and immediately started accusing people of being bad owners for having puppies there. Then her dog started running around like a mad man and naturally other dogs started to chase him. Well she freaked out saying all of our dogs were trying to attack hers (which made me crack up).
