Modern PIZZA gets an easy five star review I can give it a few more stars but maybe next time. New Haven Pizza is pretty famous and there are a few places around with big names. My favorite part about modern is that only is a pizza absolutely the best but the service is nice... Aiden was a great server the food came fast he came hot. They just crank out that PIZZA nonstop! Love the feel of the place. They're efficient they turn the tables around and serve you fast and make you happy! I've been to the other places I think the one with the girls name comes to mind. Went on a Saturday night and the line was crazyyy long. Luckily the wait wasn't too bad, it was less than 30 minutes. Service was great and pretty quick. We got one plain pie and one margarita pie. As a New Yorker, this was not the best pizza I ever had but it was still very good. We also ordered the root beer and wished we ordered a pitcher, they sell great root beer here. I have eaten a lot of pizza and I've had Modern before and after COVID times. It's not good, it's great. The perfect crust, just the right amount of cheese, flavorful sauce. Inside it reminds me of many-a-time eating a pizza slice after sports or shopping trip. Service is friendly for dine-in and efficient for takeout. I went to Modern for lunch on a rainy Thursday. Success! I got a spot in the parking lot and a table. It was busy but quiet during lunch time. The waiter came shortly after I sat down. I ordered a medium sausage pizza and tap water. My pizza took about 20 minutes to come out. Heaven! Disclosure: I grew up in New Haven and am biased in favor of New Haven pizza. Finally got to try one of the legends! Was afraid of a long wait but got in at 4pm on a Thursday no wait at all. The host was super friendly to us, gave us a couple of recs. Good experience, not great pizza... If you're in town looking to try the trinity of New Haven pizza spots, personally, I'd rank this the bottom of the list. I've heard a lot about modern and heard that many prefer it over frank Pepe's or Sally's. Respectfully I can't agree. The staff was great, service was fast, great Ceasar salad and garlic bread, but the pizza had me wanting more. First and foremost, it didn't have ANY solid undercarriage. I think it was too cheesy. It was so floppy my sister said "hey it looks like the pizza from the goofy movie", and she was right. 2 stars for me. It wasn't really memorable. Just returning from a CT pizza tour and Modern took the cake! We literally flew in on a Thursday night, dropped our bags at the hotel, and scooted over to Modern. Oh, Modern. How do I love thee? I love you so much that it's where we chose to have dinner after getting married at city hall 7 years ago! The dough is perfectly chewy with just the right amount of crisp, the char is immaculate, the sauce is divine, and every topping always melds together into something transcendental! They always seem well staffed and their staff is friendly and welcoming. There's a pretty decent amount of seating and it just has that old school pizza joint vibe. As with all the New Haven pizza joints parking isn't perfect, but they do have a small lot and the area itself doesn't feel as congested as some others. We wanted to eat in but the line was long and the guy taking names said he had no idea how long it would be. Ordered takeout, took 20 minutes and we ate in the car. My teen and his gf ordered Gluten free pizza and asked for it to be well done, it was perfectly crispy and they loved it. I ordered my veggie pizza, subbed artichokes and eggplants for the olives/mushrooms. So many veggies as always. I've enjoyed New Haven-style apizza at both Pepe's and Sally's before, so I was excited to come try Modern. There was definitely a line, but it was shorter than at the other two joints (and also we were able to squeeze into the lobby to wait, so we didn't have to brave the cold) so we opted to eat in. I wasn't exactly blown away by the experience. We ordered the garlic bread with mozzarella, small tossed salad, margherita, eggplant with onions and peppers, and veggie bomb pizzas. The salad was pretty decent with generous dressing, though I would've preferred cheese-less garlic bread. Of the pizzas, the margherita was extraordinarily plain - no tomato toppings and barely any basil. The eggplant was parmesan-esque and extremely fried, which came as a bit of a surprise to me. The veggie bomb was, understandably, the most vegetable-forward and the best pick of the three, but it was clearly lacking salt or seasoning. Everything we ordered was just okay. For the pizzas in particular, the crust was thinner and more burned than expected (compared to apizza at a few other local spots) and was the biggest detractor. read more

Had a great experience at Modern Apizza. We got there a little after 11 which was perfect since the lunch rush came in right behind us. The staff was friendly, quick, and really efficient. We ordered a pepperoni and a meatball pizza and both were excellent. The crust was thin and crispy and the pies came out hot, so giving them a minute to cool is a good idea. The pepperoni had great flavor and the meatball slices were tender. The ambiance is classic New Haven pizza shop. Simple and comfortable with booths, wood accents, and the steady buzz of a packed dining room. The brick oven adds to the vibe and gives the place that old school charm. My brother-in-law recommended me to try Modern since I tried Frank Pepe last time when I was in town. My husband and I came here around 11:30am and we did not have to wait. I thought the restaurant would be very small inside, but you can actually fit quite a decent amount of people in there. Apparently you go in one way and go out the other way, but we didn't know that until we exited the same way we entered. The only pizza I get when I am in New Haven is the clam pizza. The clam pizza definitely hit the spot for me since I'm only in town once a year, but I thought this place was a too salty compared to Frank Pepe. I think at this point it's probably just personal preference depending on which restaurant you would prefer New Haven style pizza from. Came here around 8 on a Sat night, on the way back home to NJ. Tried to call in a takeout order (multiple times) but they were just not picking up the phone. Decided to gamble and order/ wait at the store. There was a small parking lot with fairly limited parking. Street parking also available. Need to place the Takeout order at the side entrance in parking lot. Pizza takes under 15min so not bad at all. Large pizza (which would feed at least 3) was around $25. Cheese (mozarella) is great... possibly the best cheese pizza I've had. Cheese was delicious, and undercarriage help up nicely. Pepperoni is okay. Nothing special versus other places, and I would not recommend this. Overall its a solid spot. I think suburban locations of other brands such as Pepes are in the same league though (not as convenient), and much more accessible with less crowds/ easier parking. read more

Came in with a group of 8 at 5:30 on a Friday. The restaurant was full, but we were able to be seated in around 5 min which was great. We were immediately given menus and by the time a waitress came to us we were ready to order. We got water pitchers and ordered 4 pizzas, two mediums (eggplant and anchovies), the margarita (small only), and a large clam. Our clam pizza came out soon after, and this was absolutely delicious. Very strong clam taste, a lot of clam, and we devoured this. The other three came out very soon after, and all were quite good. I loved the anchovy, but it is quite salty for some people (as can be expected for most anchovy pizzas). So we meet again. This time we knew to order the pepperoni sausage (based off our last visit this was the crowd favorite) and it did not disappoint. There were three of us so we ordered a large. We also wanted to try something new and went with a small clam pizza with white sauce. So good. We had sooo much pizza leftover so we probably brought home the equivalent of a large pizza once we combined the remaining slices of both. The wait was about 45 minutes to an hour but it's understandable why. This pizza is sooo good. They have a small indoor area to sit in the AC if you don't want to stand outside as you wait. I was in the New Haven area and being that I heard so much about this place, I had to try it. I ordered the 'Veggie Bomb' 12 inch pie. Took about 15 minutes to be served. The crust was nicely charred yet a bit wet. And while the pie was loaded with vegetables, some of them such as the broccoli and spinach were obviously frozen, not fresh. I buy frozen vegetables myself to make at home, but I don't expect them on a pizza that costs $23 (12") while cut into 8 mini slices, the 12" pie is the equivalent of 2 regular sized slices. So the pizza was tasty but they should consider using fresh steamed or sauteed spinach and broccoli with fresh vegetables, not frozen. The server was very pleasant and efficient. read more

I'm from Maryland and was visiting New Haven. My cousin suggested we visit Modern for some pizza. This was the in my top 2 of best bizza I have ever eaten! I'm upset that I won't be able to eat it at least once a week! I can't even describe it's simply GOOD and worth the wait! They put a little bar cart outside so it was tolerable. Once seated it was comfortable and not crowded in the booth. If you order 2 large pies like we did it takes up the whole table as the pies go right on the table (no stands). Service was very good even though they were busy and the food didn't take too long to come out. Counterweight IPA on draft so we got a pitcher. All in all, modern does a very good job and I would return. Parking was brutal because the lot was full but we finally found a space on the street. If the bar cart is out it makes the wait a little easier. I would probably order the bomb again. A large will feed 2 good eaters or 3 dainty eaters. My quest for the best slice of my life continues but Modern aces compared to Sally's and Frank's IMHO.
