    Torta carne asada
    Rosa J.

This review is for the restaurant inside the grocery store, where they serve tacos, burritos, tortas, and gorditas. It was feature in one of the older episodes of "Chicago's Best." I remembered that the carnitas torta Ted Brunson was feeding in his mouth looked irresistible! I finally paid a visit to this place tonight. Hubby and I both had the carne asada tortas. I friendly reminded hubby that the vegetarian options were available, but he seemed to tune out my words and wanted to be a carnivore for the time being. Those tortas were quite large for $4.85 each. They were loaded with meat, avocados, and lettuce. Everything is made-to-order, so waiting is to be expected. Those tortas were definitely worth the money! The meat had great flavors, and they didn't skimp on meat, avocados and other ingredients. I didn't think they take credit cards at the restaurant, but all you need is five (5) bucks to fill up your stomach. By the way, it would certainly help if you can speak some Spanish. I speak pretty decent "food Spanish" since I'm a foodie, but hubby did the entire ordering in Spanish. The orders were called-out in Spanish as well, so be sure to pay attention. One of many joys of living in Chicago is the adventure of the food scenes. Honestly, many of them happen in the nondescript neighborhood like Belmont Central/Cragin. I'm glad that I found another neighborhood gem this evening, and I know there are many more to come as I explore further.

For years, this was the Queen's pharmacy for many years. When this store opened it was a welcome to the area. Clean location. Fully stocked. Great cuts of meat, ham and cheese. Friendly staff. The bonus also is having a taqueria right inside. Pick up some groceries for tomorrow and dinner for tonight. Walking location for anyone in the area of diversey and Austin. Plenty of parking in the front and rear. Great location.

    Great Tortas and real tacos!

As waiter came to the table we received dirty napkins and spoons. When food finally arrived, it was cold so we had to wait a couple more minutes. Just my worst experience for my first time here. They rather stand around and say self-checkout is open. People know about self-checkout, clearly guest will rather go through the regular check out. Those males they have over there in the deli have ruined the quality of the hot or cooked items over there. I've heard a customer request the $1 item and they said there wasn't any more they'd have to cook them, THEN turned and said they wouldn't have time. They stand back there moving so slow it's unbelievable. The one guy with the real thick glasses has a real nasty attitude. Every time a woman asks for something he's speaking under his breath about them. I hear because I stand a wait for another guy to come available because I never want to deal with him and he speaks negatively of the customers because they have request. Personally, I decided to just go to other locations or other stores, if I want something from the deli. The store is clean, but it be so crowded.

A line for grocery store fried chicken? Absolute cinema. People have been recommending I get into fried chicken reviews, and I've resisted as I really don't want to get fat, but this was the perfect storm to start a grocery store fried chicken review journey. I got to the front in the line and felt like a fish out of water. I sheepishly asked the employees, Darius R and Damariea J, what the move was as it was my first time getting fried chicken from here. I thought they'd be annoyed, but they were so helpful and welcoming. "Today is actually wing bucket Friday! A whole bucket is normally $17.99 but today it's $9.99. I can give you some of everything so you can try, but the spicy wings are my favorite." Hell yeah. Darius was the MAN. I took my tissi and wing bucket to the UIC campus for consumption. The tissi was a brick and landed at a 6/10, which currently ranks it 71st out of 94 grocery store birds I've tried, but the fried chicken was INSANE. Darius wasn't lying, the spicy wings were next level. The best grocery store chicken I've ever had. Boomin the Publix fried chicken. Shoutout to the Darius' and Damariea's of the world. Good people. As always, I am looking for new fantastic restaurants, and stores to try out, and share with: family, friends, and on Yelp. As you walk in it seems like a common corner store, groceries in the front, meat towards the rear. When I walked to the back I had a pretty good hunch this would be a great one. The fresh smell, it was very clean, and the amazing eye catching signage. You could feel like you just walked into in a sweet little store in Mexico. When they handed me the food I ordered I knew was on the right track. When I took my first bites I smiled, and knew, I needed to share this place. I was intrigued by the Pozole Verde sign out front. I had never had it before, so I placed my order for that and zero regrets. It comes out in a quart container with a plastic wrapped foam tray with: chopped onions, cilantro, radish, shredded cabbage, and mexican oregano. I added mostly everything but went easy on the oregano. The chunks of chicken were tender and not overcooked. The hominy and vegetables were just right as well. They have this to a science and it has to be near perfect. Now to the tacos: As you often see in neighborhood grocery stores the chorizo was hanging in back above the meat counter, so a house made chorizo taco was a given. The Al Pastor was reccomend by the one of the butchers, and I had a steak taco to round it, and myself, out. All I can say is that like the pozole everything was superb. Even the salsas.. I wish I knew of this place when I worked and lived in the area. I would definitely have known everyone there by name. I still smile thinking of it, and next time I'm in that hood, I will be there. I look forward to trying out a few more menu items, and picking up some of the fresh meat. So maybe don't slap Grandma... but you should at least pick her up and take her out to lunch here. Enjoy! #AlfieEats
