Chorizo burrito. They don't skimp on the meat or the avocado!
    Madison O.

Taqueria Chapala has the best burrito on the north side! After stumbling upon this place months ago during a Yelp search, I finally made it and this is my new favorite Mexican place! It's authentic (my friend and I were the only non-Hispanics) and a true hole-in-the-wall with its location in the back of a supermarket. The "menu" is really just a list of meat fillings for tacos, burritos, and tortas and it seemed that my friend and I were the only ones that ordered off of it. Everyone else, regulars I suppose, were ordering plates of food and what looked to be menudo. There were no prices which was frustrating, but when our huge burritos rang up at $6 we weren't complaining. Some people ordered at the cash register like we did while others ordered from their tables. When our food came out we were pleasantly surprised to get a free side of grilled onions and jalapeños. I doused my burrito with the taqueria's very good salsa verde. This place isn't for everyone - I would recommend a solid knowledge/appreciation of Mexican food. It's also certainly not for any occasion as it's a low key place with plastic fast-food type booths. But in my opinion, there's no better way to eat Mexican food!

    Asada burrito

This Mexican "restaurant" situated in the back of a Mexican supermarket actually has one of the best burritos I've ever had. I'm so glad my friend took me here; what a great find! Their menu is just a list of meats for tacos, tortas, and burritos in Spanish and does not have the prices listed. I ordered the Asada burrito and found out only after I got the receipt that it was only $5.99! After ordering at the cash register, my friend and I sat at a table, and our burritos were brought to us with a side of grilled onions, jalapeño, and lime. The tables were also equipped with awesome red and green salsa. The Asada burrito was amazing. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, and just melted in my mouth.

Chorizo taco and the taco al pastor

This hidden gem offers outstanding authentic Mexican food in one of the most underrated parts of Chicago. Stellar food at stellar prices. The restaurant is located in the back of the supermarket, where they offer a variety of Mexican dishes. You order at the counter, they bring you your food, and then you pay before you leave back at the counter. The men serving us were very nice and patient with us. I ordered the taco al pastor and the chorizo taco with onions and cilantro. Our tacos came with one small side of spicy grilled peppers, grilled onions, and thick slices of lime. The man who brought our food also brought us all cups of water, which was very nice. Both tacos had perfect double corn tortillas. The chorizo taco was delicious and slightly crispy, and all around extremely flavorful. At first glance you can't see the pineapple in my al pastor taco, but it was very clearly in there once you take a bite. The meat of the al pastor taco was very juicy and excellently seasoned. Of the two tacos I thought the chorizo taco was slightly better, but both still completely exceeded my expectations. This place offers delicious food and is well worth the trip up Clark street. I will absolutely be returning soon.

The grilled jalapeño and cebolla just adds to the cuisine.

Authentic Mexican food!!!!!! Friendly and Covid consciousness . The beans alone are a draw to come into this place.

    Carnitas taco (with fatty skin)

I have tried many Mexican restaurants all over Chicago, and I must say this is definitely near the top of the list! The building itself is a supermarket with the restaurant located in the back. They have fresh meals available for takeout from chicken, Mexican rice, beans, carnitas, ribs etc you can buy by the pound. Also, they serve made to order tacos and burritos too! There tacos are top notch! I have gotten carnitas and asada tacos here multiple times and they are amazing. They use corn tortillas with a good amount of meat per taco topped with onions and cilantro. They also give a green and red sauce to put on your tacos on the side. Tacos range from $1.50 to $2.00 depending on what kind you like. I also got a asada burrito, and it is a good size with alot of meat. Definitely won't feel being cheated with the amount of meat in your burrito. It is full of flavor, but not too greasy like other places. The steak burrito was $5.99. Also, comes with green and red sauce. They do have a good amount of indoor seats, but it is very simple. Service was fast and the people working were really friendly. If you want a great meal for take out or want to grab a quick bite, this is a great place to go!

The nice case of options ranging of Carnitas to Arroz y Frijoles

This place consistently throws down when it comes to their food. Whether you go down the path of the chicken (Carbon Pollo) or the Carnitas, they get it right and is priced affordably. I usually go with the tacos here of either Carnitas or Carne Asada with onions and cilantro. Then there's a refrigerator case the opposite side of the cashier where you can buy fresh Guacamole, Pico de Gallo or other salsas. They also include a aluminum foil packet of roasted jalapeños and 1 Salsa Verde and Roja. What's also nice about if you order the Pollo Carbon is they'll include about 8-10 tortillas enclosed in foil with the whole chicken! That's a nice touch!!

This was the second stop of my Ethnic Grocery Tour. This Mexican grocery store sells fresh produce, memorable guacamole and specialty items such as Mexican sour cream. There is an eating area with about 10 little booths where you can eat some the best carnitas around and roast chicken. They also have a selection of tacos like cabeza tacos. The store was packed when we went in on a Monday morning, it might have been due to the heavy thunderstorm, but people looked pretty happy to be there.

I must admit that I had low expectations because quite frankly, I have not enjoyed Mexican food outside of Mexico or California. However, we were hungry, and it was near where we were staying, so I decided we should check it out, and I am so glad we did! The food was great. Both adults and the VERY picky children in our group all enjoyed our meals. I ordered the green chicken enchiladas and the other adult ordered a chile relleno combo, which I also got to try. Everything was delicious and devoured by all! We were so full but the owner talked us into the chocoflan, and we did not regret trying it. It was soooo good! Speaking of the owner, the service was great. We really enjoyed how he and the rest of the staff were very courteous. It is a small establishment, and it gets a good amount of people, so I assume that there are waits during peak hours. I highly recommend Sabroso! And we plan to return the next time we are in the area.

Appetizers were quac and chips, and shrimp ceviche. The guac was really good, but the ceviche was the star. Served on a bed of cucumbers, it was visually beautiful, and the flavor was fresh and complex. There was also a LOT of it. We ended up taking some home. Entrees were steak and shrimp for me, and Tampiquena for my friend. In both dishes, the steak was done to perfection. The sauce that came with my shrimp was spicy and deep--lots of flavor layers there. Both of us took home portions of our meals because there was a lot of food on the plates. Finally, the service--the servers are attentive without hovering. If we needed something, they were there, but never intrusive. It is hard to believe this is a little neighborhood spot, given the service and the quality of the food. It was not too busy tonight--we ate early--but I recommend reservations. It is very popular with the neighborhood. Bottom line, we each had 2 margaritas, appetizers, and entrees, and our bills with tip were around $105.00 each--totally worth it! Try this little gem--you won't regret it.

We came later on a Monday night so we did not have to wait to get a seat although it was still pretty busy. The place is decorated nicely. Well on a block with many other Mexican businesses. Spicy and bitterness of the chocolate balanced super well. rice was also cooked perfectly. The shredded beef dish was short rib and mashed potatoes. They were meant to be assembled into a homemade tortilla - a very interesting concept. The homemade tortillas were so warm and fluffy. I have never had such good tortillas.
