Surely "la Grande" must refer to the steeply pitched roof which suggests that this building might have been a sewing machine and vacuum shop at the dawn of the mid-century modern era. Every medium-sized town or small city in the west had such a store that 50 feet tall, yet barely the width of the typical living room. They always command the attention of passing traffic, so they're perfect for conversion into restaurants and used car sales offices...and it's all the more striking with a prime example of googie signage out front! With its severely sun-faded exterior murals streaking skyward to the steeple-like roof, Taqueria la Grande seems to have been here for decades already, but those murals were left by Salsa Taqueria [r.i.p.]. Only two enthusiastic Yelp reviews were not enough to keep Salsa Taqueria in business. I hope this first ho-hum review doesn't doom the place! But here it goes... La Grande's were not the best tacos I've ever tasted by far, but if I could get a "pretty good" taco al pastor for 99 cents here in Sacramento, everyone would be raving about this tremendous value. The beans and rice were remarkable only for being so virtually flavorless. The biggest disappointment was the letdown when my girlfriend got her tortillas. The dry erase board near the door boasted "TORTILLAS HECHA A MANO", but these were definitely industrial. Taqueria la Grande is decent, but can "decent" Mexican food really hack it in 2012? Two-star food....the extra star is for friendly, earnest service, good prices, whimsical building and googie signage.
