I have been a patient of Dr. Carol Alvarado for over a year. Observations and conclusions below are based on my personal experience with her involving a rather extensive and complex treatment. - Dr. Carol Alvarado is an outstanding high-class specialist who really cares about her patients. - Not only Dr. Alvarado is a general and cosmetic dentist, which already is the huge advantage for her patients, but she also has a wide range of additional knowledge and skills that prove to be life changing for them. - She is extremely thorough and detailed in everything she does. - She is a perfectionist who goes an extra mile for her patients. - Her highest qualification and professionalism, use of the state-of-the-art equipment, as well as cooperation with a team of other superbly qualified dental professionals where necessary, produce the desired results even in complicated cases. - I would like to mention separately Irene, Dr. Alvarado's office manager and her right hand, who keeps Dr. Alvarado's office welcoming and professional. She and her staff are very friendly and welcoming. That's the reason i'm giving the two stars. I felt very pressured to do the treatments required to get my teeth in good condition. I was quoted over $15,000 and as I would assume, most people don't have that amount at their disposal. They called me multiple times a week to try to get me to book an appointment. It felt like they cared more about the pay check than what was right for me. I ended up going to another dentist for the treatments and saved over $10,000. I have serious problems with someone who does not know how to take an MRI, insists on giving me one in her office without giving me any directions for the procedure and then proceeds to give me treatment and make terrifying declarations about my health on the basis of those spurious clinical findings. Dr. Alvarado told me she worried about the "tail of my thyroid" being in my pharynx. I haven't yet commenced medical training but I do know that: a) The thyroid does not have a tail nor is it that large. It is a butterfly-shaped gland that is about the size of a quarter. b) The thyroid could not have possibly ever crept into my pharynx or I'd have died. The thyroid sits at the base of the throat. c) I have no thyroid. So for her to make recommendations from reading a poorly-acquired MRI with such a questionable base of knowledge and no compunction about it is downright irresponsible, to say the least. I'm lucky I had some knowledge before entering her clinic or I may have sustained severe emotional and financial damages afterward. Two stars back for her pleasant demeanor, the kindness of the staff, the oxygen bar treatment and the agave syrup for the K-cups at the front. read more

Sure, her office is lovely and her staff is friendly (almost annoyingly so), but in the two hours I was there (yes, that's right: TWO HOURS for what I hoped would be a quick and relatively painless cleaning), Dr. Alvarado managed to diagnose me with the following: 1) a "yeasty mouth" for which she prescribed me a pill that I have to suck on five times a day for two weeks (and then return for a follow up with her that will, of course, no longer be covered by my insurance) 2) swollen turbinates--She told me I should go see an ENT immediately and hinted I would have to get surgery on my sinuses. Umm, hello, it's allergy season in Houston. Show me someone with "normal" turbinates 3) swollen tonsils (False: I had them checked by a doctor, and they're normal-sized) 4) an enlarged bone in my upper pallet (What?!) 5) malformed jaw sockets (there's definitely some jaw surgery in my future) 6) receding gums 7) abnormally dry lips (I'm sorry I don't wear lip gloss to the dentist) 8) teeth grinding (and severe tongue-thrusting and chewing) And the best for last: 9) skin cancer! Yes, skin cancer. From a dentist. She freaked out when she saw a tiny red dot above my upper lip. "Now, I'm not saying it's cancer, but you should get that checked out..." she told me. I did. And it's a spider vein. I'm prone to them. CANCER. Who expects to hear cancer at a dental cleaning?! And all of this before she so much as glanced at my actual teeth. My expectation of a dentist is that they tell me if I have plaque or not. I do not want to learn way more about my body than I ever wanted to know. But the good news is that all of the above (except the cancer) can be cured with some of Dr. Alvarado's own oral-care products and a night guard--custom-made for only $1,800! And of course, insurance does not cover that. Please...I feel sorry for anyone she's suckered into spending that much money on something you're going to chew up in your sleep. My brand new $30 night guard from Walgreens and I are doing just fine. Oh, but at least I don't have plaque. Dr. Alvarado is an alarmist and a product-pusher. Do not be suckered in by the new-age music playing while you sit in a plush dental chair overlooking a garden and having soothing Vitamin E rubbed on your lips. All I know is, thank god this woman is not my gynecologist. read more

I'm sorry to see that Nupur had a less than stellar experience, but Dr. Alvarado has been my dentist since 2012 and she is awesome. This is an unsolicited review that comes from a person who generally hates all doctor visits (dentists included). My oral health was in pretty bad shape when I first came to Dr. Alvarado, and now my teeth/gums are in excellent condition. Now I only go in for routine cleanings, but when I started I needed periodontal care, two wisdom teeth extractions, and probably 3 or 4 fillings. She also creates her own products (I swear by her O2 Gel) and really cares about her patients. She also has a very helpful staff -- although the turn over seems to be high, as it's pretty rare for me to see the same people when I come in for my visits. Her services can be expensive, but you do get what you pay for. I highly recommend. read more

I really wanted to like this place. It's next my house, very well furnished and seemed great from the outside. Unfortunately, scheduling is a nightmare, they aren't verified with basic dental insurance yet (it's been about 6 months that I've been waiting), their "teeth whitening" did not work but instead burned my gums and they acted like my teeth were whiter than Barbara Bush's hair, the individual cutting my whitening trays didn't use gloves and stuck her hands in the trash and then back onto the trays (!!!!!!!!) and on her keyboard (!!!!!!!!), and last but not least I had to wait two hours when I had an appointment for 6 months. Dr. Alvarado is a great dentist. I have been a patient of Dr. Alvarado for about six months and I can say she is very perfectionist in her work. She makes sure you get the best look when it comes to your teeth. She make you feel very comfortable in her office and it feels like home. Staff is very professional and nice. I was looking for a dentist closer to my house and found Alvarado through ZocDoc. She had positive reviews so I went ahead and booked a teeth cleaning and check up. The dental assistant who did my cleaning was very friendly and she did a great job. BUT when Dr. Alvarado came in for my exam, she immediately started listing treatments that I "needed", totaling approx. $1500 (out of pocket - after my insurance deduction!) as well as a recommendation to get my nasal cavity opened in surgery for better air flow (what?!). Hesitant that my teeth were that bad (yikes!), and knowing that my airways are clear...I went to another dentist for a second opinion. Turns out I only need two minor fillings. When going to a place for medical treatment, the last thing I want is to be pressured to get extravagant treatments that aren't necessary. Do not recommend Dr. Alvarado at all. P.S.
