It makes me really sad to write this review. I love to support small and local. I have only ever had their cupcakes sold individually at a Moyock farm market, but I've tried at least 5 different flavors. They always LOOK so delicious, fun and exciting! But...I have never in my life spit out a cupcake, or any kind of cake. I LOVE cake. First time trying them was a couple years ago, and they were unicorn-y looking, and sparkly, and gorgeous. But just not good. Thought I'd try them again 2 days ago and these 3 flavors: Ube, Strawberry (in case I didn't like the Ube), and Chocolate Cheesecake. The Ube was actually fine, and the best of the 3. But I still tossed half of it because it was so dry. SO dry, like sawdust. And sadly, I literally spit out the first bite of both the Strawberry and the Choc Cheesecake. Even drier than the Ube, but worse, they tasted...spoiled, if that's possible. Sadly, I only remembered to take a photo of the last one. I just don't understand! Most other reviews are so great! Maybe you have to order them fresh and not in a retail outlet. I happened to be I. The area for a Yelp Elite event at the next shopping strip over. I saw Carolina Cupcakery, and had 30 minutes to kill so we headed over there to get some sweet treats. Upon entering we were greeted warmly. She engaged in various conversations. She even helped me choose my cupcakes and answered any questions we had. I loved seeing all the examples of cakes they do, displayed throughout. I opted for a 4 pack. Whenever I am trying new cupcakes I have a method to my madness. I have to get a fruit one, a chocolate cake based, a vanilla cake based and a surprise. I ended up choosing a lemon cupcake, a vanilla cupcake, a chocolate cupcake and an Ube cupcake. The all tasted nice. The flavors were not over powering at all. I did not taste lemon in icing too much. Out of the 4 flavors I purchase, the Une was the best. First things first, Carolina Cupcakery (CC) will always be the first stop for me when it comes to custom cake, ideas or cupcakes. CC serviced my Lord of the Rings (LOTR) baby shower last year with the cutest cupcakes, and now fast forward has came in beautifully to provide my twins with their custom LOTR themed smash cakes. Can't say I'm reviewing based on anything I bought. The lack of customer service prevented me from doing so. A gentleman walked in before me. Doesn't look like he was greeted at all either. I just took a look around since I was going to lunch next door and from outside it looked good. The gentleman left. 3 girls in there but no one acknowledged any of us. That's a big pet peeve of mine and sets a poor first impression. One was on the phone regarding an order and the other seemed to be at the computer working on something. Was not greeted when I came in. I had never been there before so I had to ask if they did 4 cupcakes or if there was a number to get. Didn't even get asked what flavors I wanted, I basically had to ask if they were ready. No communication other than giving me the price. I saw two people in there and neither acknowledged me, other than what they were forced to do. Will never return here and I'd suggest finding a different spot. This was my first time here and I will never go back and tell everyone I know about the terrible job they did! They screwed up both the cake-- not at all what I ordered or paid for-- and the cupcakes. The cake was clearly described but they took short cuts and did something they wanted, rather than I wanted, expressed on the form, ordered, and paid for. The "tea-rose" tip for the cupcakes was clearly and unmistakably written on the order form with the decoration instructions but the decorator chose to make my cupcakes blue and white and use a ugly round tip, despite that! Who does that? I can understand if it wasn't written on the form, but it was! They usurped my wishes and the order for their own reasons. I don't know why anyone would ever get a second order with this level of decorating incompetence! And the gluten-free items are dry and chalky to boot! read more

I had heard of this bakery for a while but it wasn't until seeing them at the farmers market near Chesapeake General hospital and the new VA clinic that I tried a few. Now I'm hooked on the quality of the product, the outstanding helpful staff and their willingness's to really work with the customer to create a just right custom order. Last fall they did Italian wedding cake cupcakes for my wife's birthday and I just picked up tiramisu cupcakes for another birthday celebration. Who does that AND nails the very specific taste of these cakes? The taste, texture and balance between cake and icing is always spot on. They are also able to offer a number of food coloring options that do not use food dyes, something important for all of us but especially kids! Okay the elephant in the room for some is price. But I contend that if you compare them to many other cupcake sources AND factor in quality this cupcakery is not to be beaten. Make your own decision by going. You won't be disappointed. read more

I was excited to find a cupcake place that had gluten free and vegan cupcakes as I am a cupcake and cake pop lover! I saw this establishment on my way to oak lake park, nice place to stop after some exercise. Pros: service was very friendly, they had several options of cupcakes and cake pops to choose from. The small establishment was very small/cozy and appeared very clean. They have one small table for patrons. I enjoyed looking at all of the decorations and cake options. They offer discounts on purchases if you sign up with their shop, I was happy to receive a discount on my first purchase as well as receiving a free cake pop just for checking in with Yelp! Masks were required, social distancing signs were in place. I don't recall seeing hand sanitizer. There was no available bathroom to wash hands. As for the gluten free cupcake I had, it was rather on the dry side, it wasn't very tasty at all, I was rather disappointed. I ended up throwing it away (it's my first time in my life not eating my entire cupcake). My toddlers regular cupcake was just ok, she liked it. The cake pop was not delicious or moist, such a bummer. I had planned to order cake pops for my daughter's birthday but I definitely won't be getting them from here after tasting my free one. I was really surprised I didn't like any of the options I tried considering they were featured in cupcake wars. They also sell cookies which I didn't try. All the way to the right is a large refrigerator that has all the gluten free/keto options. Keep in mind the GF cupcakes are smaller than the regular cupcakes. We stopped here for a cupcake for a celebration and bought the gluten free strawberry crunch cupcake and it did not disappoint. There was strawberry puree filling and the frosting wasn't too sweet. Also bought a gluten free cherry pie. A few days later we went back and got the remaining pies they had. This was the best gluten free pie crust at ​any bakery across the country. I came to Carolina Cupcakery with one goal in mind, which is to eat some Red Velvet cupcakes. The first thing I noticed is the amount of cakes, cupcakes, and sweets that they have inside the store. I felt a little bit overwhelmed, but it feels like heaven. The store was very well decorated, but I noticed that the store was not well lit. I was surprised to learn that 1 red velvet cupcake cost me more than $4 (including tax). Even though it was a little bit pricey, the cupcake was really good especially the cream cheese frosting. The cupcake is not very sweet, but the cream cheese is a little bit sweet. It's a little bit moist as well, which is what I always look for when I eat cupcakes. found this place in the plaza where I was ordering some takeout. I ordered a lemon, Pink Champagne, key lime, and a strawberry jumbo cupcake 4-pack. So picked up some red velvet vegan Donuts The lemon cupcake was slightly dry. They state that they bake every day m house. I kind of felt like this cupcake was a day old. It's covid era and businesses are slow so I wouldn't be surprised and I can't be mad at that. The Pink champagne cupcake was interesting. I didn't quite understand what was the flavor that they were going for. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great. The cupcake itself was not very flavorful and also a little too dry. The lack of sweetness isn't a terrible thing considering that there was a lot of icing. The key lime tart cupcake was quite moist. The combo of tarte sweet icing in subtle cupcake was a perfect combination. Strawberry cake is always one of my favorites and I look forward to almost always picking it. especially when a place brands themselves by using real strawberries. I found out there strawberry cupcake was a decent contender amongst strawberry cupcakes. The strawberry in the cake itself brought great flavor and the icing provided a good balance of strawberry tart-sweetness. Overall, All of the icings were sweet and created a balance for the lack of Sweetness in the cupcakes themselves. The red velvet vegan donut was unique. I'm not a huge chocolate fan yeah. I knew I wanted to try the red velvet cake donut. They did a good job and I was happy that I had two to enjoy. The customer service was great here. Even through the pandemic, the young girl at the counter was friendly and allowed me to take my time picking my desserts. Note that If you are vegan, gluten-free, dairy free etc.. this place had an option for anyone's pallet, dietary restrictions, taste buds and that was pretty cool in my book! So our first time here. Very experienced with cupcakes, unfortunately not on par with a middle of the road cupcakery. Website boasts 100+ types of cupcakes. None of which taste fresh. The cases looked underwhelming and frankly, the cupcakes do not live up to the pricetag. We bought a PB cupcake and a Seabreeze. The PB was gritty and due to being refrigerated, was dry. The peanutbutter taste was lacking as well. All you could taste was the sugar, or smooth and light. The seabreeze boasts Vodka soaked cranberries but alas, only one cranberry in the whole cupcake, again with no definable taste other than the sugar. It too was super dry, most likely because they are displayed in a refer unit. Recommendation would be place your fresh cupcakes in a nonchilled case. read more

It's a real hardship to be disappointed by a baked good when you're allergic to gluten. I haven't become jaded yet, but cupcakes like those I bought from the Carolina Cupcakery get me awfully close. I put my faith and hope and $5 into hopefully having a moment of sweet normalcy at my Grandmother's 75th birthday, only to have my hopes mercilessly beat to death by a grainy, dry cupcake. I say cupcake, but it was more like a flavored cardboard vehicle for way too much sugar, shaped like a cupcake. To the bakers, I know you probably think, it's not THAT bad. And they aren't. But you know- I KNOW you know- that it's not good either. And there are good gluten free cupcakes out there. Maybe pull back on the flavors until you have a cupcake that actually tastes normal. I wish I could give this place NEGATIVE stars for this very negative review. I placed my order on April 10th, 2019 for May 4th, 2019. Almost a month notice. The communication was via email and extremely clear on what I wanted. I went to the Chesapeake location at 4:30pm on May 4th to pick up my cake. The cake was on a back shelf (that was not refrigerated) and completely wrapped for transport. I was handed the cake, my cake topper (it was not on the cake) and a pen to sign a piece of paper that I was told "verifies I picked up the cake". I left, drove 10 minutes to my home and unwrapped it immediately. I was SHOCKED with how AWFUL it looked. It was slanted, the ribbon I provided did not meet at the back of the cake and buttercream was sliding off it. I took photos right away and emailed the company stating how disappointed I was (before trying the cake). Then, we tried it....disgusting. We took one bite and threw the entire thing away. The cake was dense and the buttercream filling was not sweet and very grainy. I have emailed back and forth with the owner and she refuses to give me my money back EVEN THOUGH she has commented on other reviews on Yelp that she would "refund with a smile". Moved from the Edinburgh location in Chesapeake to Battlefield Blvd and the cupcakes are still dry....the only cupcake that's half way decent is the carrot cake but they use a lot of coconut flakes & it's too sweet, so it makes it overwhelming. So actually that's not all that great either... Frosting wasn't smooth and creamy. And it's packed up there too! Like most cupcakes are these days. I've tried This place many times before I did this review to be sure I didn't just get a bad batch or a stale left over but its been consistent each time. If I had to guess by the dryness and the crust on the buttercream - the one that had been sitting the longest was the key lime. I wish I would have read the reviews before purchasing a specialty cake from this place. We ordered a sugar free cake. Went to pick it up and by the time we got home the top and bottom layer were separated. Also, the taste of the cake was dry! We spoke to the manager and she said it was a transportation issue. She advised that she had before pictures and the cake didn't look like that. Well before and after pictures should look the same especially within a 10 minute commute. They were very defensive and offered in store credit. No go on the in store credit. We ended up tossing the cake. If you want a specialty cake please go to My Vegan Sweet Tooth. They do sugar free cakes and they don't separate. They also taste lovely. I wish I would've went there. It's so sad that out of 106 reviews there's a 3 star rating. UPDATE: My husband did not say he tipped over the cake. That sounds insane. Also, no threats were made. We simply stated we would post a review and WE did. You may want to consider looking up what a threat is. It's sad that you treat your customers the way you do. At the end of the day the cake was done sloppily and not once did the owner own up to it. The saddest part is, that it didn't even look like pac man. Looks like there are several other reviews here with the same issue. Recently tried the red velvet cupcake with the rose icing on top to give this place another shot but to my surprise, the cupcakes were still dry and the frosting was hard to bite into.
