what a cute VIBE! oh my god I walked in and immediately said "oh this coffee is about to be soo good" and I do love being right. while I didn't get much this stop, the black iced coffee I had was heavenly. You can tell they really care about the coffee they procure and brew. there was some amazing looking pastries and breakfast sandwiches that I'm definitely gonna have to give a try my next time in. absolutely obsessed with the abundance of burlap sacks full of coffee beans showering the shop and personally loved that they had an entire list of all the beans available for purchase including region and flavour profiles. Caroline's a definitely going to be one of my top coffee spots from now on! read more

When looking for an afternoon coffee I try to avoid the big chain coffee places like Starbucks, Dutch Bros, etc and head for more locally based independent coffee shops. That isn't often easy as many close in the early afternoon, usually not open after 3pm. I was delighted to find Caroline's open to 5:30. YES! It's a delightful and charming shop off the beaten trail of touristy places in downtown Grass Valley. The array of coffee products was very satisfying and they highlighted a special Pistachio Latte! Sounded good so we got it, a 16oz for the afternoon 'pick-me-up'. A bit on the sweet side it nonetheless hit the spot for a coffee. They have a wide array of tea options too. The service was friendly and very good. The coffee came to the red pickup counter in good time. There are lots of cozy cafe type seating both inside and out. The choice of muffins, baked goods, or other snacks were slim just because it was late, but undoubtedly good too. If in Grass Valley, try it. read more

A friend visiting from Florida had a stop to this place #1 on his list so he could get some loose leaf tea. He went in while I waited outside with my dog. I waited a long time and several people were in and same ones out. Finally my friend came out empty handed and looking shaken. He said "they told me were to wait to be helped for tea. I stood there and no one helped me while several others were helped. Finally the same woman who told me where to stand asked 'haven't you been helped yet'? My Hubby & I made a quick stop at Carolines as we were passing through on our way to the airport. The coffee was really good & the service was also. One thing I really appreciated was they had a cup of fresh berries available to grab & go! I eat berries, a minimum of five days a week with Greek yogurt, walnuts, and honey drizzle. The coffee here is definitely 5 stars! During our stay in Grass Valley we visited Carolines on three occasions. We tried several beverages, finding their Brown Sugar Oat Latte special to be our favorite. The drink selections are good and the quality of their coffee is spot on. Their employees.....now that is a different story. In all three of our visits, we experienced young ladies who were not at all welcoming, were impatient with our couple of questions, and none of them seemed to want to be there. During our last visit we had one of the employees yell across the shop at us that we had picked up the wrong drinks. They had called our name and there were only two drinks to pick up, so we took them. There weren't any names on the cups, and they were the right color for what we ordered, so there was no way for us to know otherwise. Thankfully, we hadn't had any yet, so there wasn't any contamination (although, technically, they probably should have remade them for the correct customer). That experience was so off-putting that we didn't go back during the rest of our stay. read more

Caroline's is a great place for coffee especially when you are coming to town. See my receipt. It is located on South Auburn Street in Grass Valley ( 2 blocks off highway 49). It has indoor and outside seating. You can park on the side street to get your coffee. They also have teas and a small selection of pastries and burritos along with stuffed croissants and bagels. I just got back into town and stopped in for a coffee. It smelled good inside and it's surprisingly bigger inside then I remember. Coffee was strong and energized me! Friendly employees with locals and tourists inside (probably due to hotel down the block). They open at 7am. Great job Carolines! read more

I was raised in Grass Valley and recently came back for a quick visit. Carolines wasn't there when I lived there but I wish it was. What a great shop. I loved the small town feel and the overall vibe which was very welcoming. You could tell there was good mixture of tourists and regulars. I'm a coffee creature of habit and order the same thing everywhere I go (iced oatmilk latte with agave shaken with extra ice) but don't let my repetition fool you. I'm actually fairly picky about the end result and Carolines did not disappoint. The barista was friendly and helpful. They didn't offer agave but replaced it with honey and was walking to shake it up for me. The wait wasn't long at all and I loved my experience from start to finish. Parking is close and they do offer indoor and outdoor seating. This is a very cool coffee shop that I would definitely visit again. Good news / Bad news situation here for me. Ordered a single shot of espresso. Smells great. Problem? There's about one & a half tablespoons in the paper cup! Really? Even in Italy that has the most powerful rocket fuel coffee ,you get at least 2.5 ounces. So one star demerit for the ridiculously small portion here at Caroline's. Now the great news. Several outstanding items: 1. The place smells Fantastic. Really rich, smooth coffee aroma. Not bitter, not burnt. I wish this smell came as a men's cologne, I'd wear it. 2. The variety of whole beans is extraordinary. A few dozen beans sourced from around the entire planet. You can choose from the region and most probably have it in a light or medium or dark roast. 3. Prices are fair for the quality and rarity of the whole beans. I got a pound of the Sulawesi light roast for $18.99. OMG it smells fantastic. I'm Jonesin' for another cup right now. I've visited coffee roaster shops both big and small throughout planet earth. Have had some amazing coffee. This place has world class beans. Humble shop. Looks and feels more like a warehouse storeroom than a retail coffee shop. No pastries or frippery. Nice folks at the counter. If you order a pure espresso and want a real jolt, get a triple. It'll be only about 3 ounces max. Or just order an Americano for a more sedate 5 ounce treat. read more

One of the most extensive collections of beans in Nevada County. Good vibe to the place. Staff tends to be friendly with only a little aloofness to remind you are in a coffee shop. So, why not five stars? Well, for a place that is a specialty roaster and prides themselves on an expert approach to coffee, they just don't seem to know WHEN a particular batch of beans was roasted. Visited last Sunday in the morning.,my second time here. Ordered a simple vanilla latte. Order was called fairly quickly, sipped the latte and it wasn't very good, very watery didn't have much of a coffee taste. Took it back to the register explained to the cashier what was going on, she looked like she couldn't care less, didn't offer to remake it. had her add pumps of vanilla just a waste of money which I'm not concerned with but the bad service I received from her is why I will never return! read more

Caroline's roasts great coffee. Most of the time they make great drinks. Today I ordered a bone dry cappucino with oat milk. Tricky but doable. I order them every day at Peet's in Berkeley. What I got was a cup of hot milk. Explanation: "its hard to froth oat milk." "OK.Then make a bone dry cappucino with whole milk." What I got was another glass of hot milk. I returned it and left with nothing. Last cappucino to be ordered there. By definition, bone dry cap is an espresso with FOAM, not MILK. I'm not a snob about this but if I'm paying $5 for a coffee I have a right to have it the way I want it. Generally good barristas. This sunday afternoon not one brain between the 2 girls there. read more

They have stickers here. I bought one, but forgot about it until I started writing this review. I got the sticker for someone else. I'm not a fan of stickers, even when I was a kid. I liked band aids as a kid though, which are kind of like stickers. Band aids gave off the impression that I've been through some tough times, but I persevered. A sticker to me doesn't carry much functional value, it's just a form of expression, which I guess expressing yourself is valuable. I just don't know how to express myself through stickers. I didn't know how to do it as a kid and I don't know how to do it as an adult. I somewhat envy those adults that are able to express themselves through stickers on their laptop, hydro flask, and cars. I wouldn't even know where to begin. I'd imagine, as soon as I put a bumper sticker on my car, I'd immediately start to question if this is how I really want to express myself to the world. Honestly, if I had to put a bumper sticker on my car, it'd be "STUDENT DRIVER, PLEASE BE PATIENT". That's how I'd want people to view me. I have a lot of driving experience, but I always consider myself a student of the game, the game of driving. For example, this past weekend I learned that when you're driving somewhere and using Apple maps, you can let other cars know if there is a radar check nearby. When you're in route to your destination, you click on "report an incident" and then click on "speed check". If other cars are using Apple maps, this notifies them to slow down when passing that area. This might be common knowledge, but its very new to me and I'm planning on learning something new this week too, hence the student driver mentality. Anyway, the coffee was really good and unfortunately I lost my sticker from here. read more
