Yum! The fish sandwich flopped over the giant roll like it was a cracker, and the Mrs's jambalaya was about as good as anywhere in NOLA. But the french fries were the best part. One of the best fried fish sandwiches on the island...and, as a local, I've tried a lot of fish sandwiches.

Just went into Caroline's to eat with three others, was greeted at the door by the most horrible server I've ever encountered. She asked how many and shoed me downstairs before getting my name. Three other parties walked in after us and was greeted by another gentleman who sat ALL parties with no problem, while we waited down the stairs. So I went up to the gentleman and asked about if we were getting sat, he went to get the nasty woman who greeted me in the first place. She gave a sorry excuse of why we weren't sat. She then abruptly cleaned a table a table with aggression. Didn't catch her name, but she was our server. She had medium brown her with a french braid, smaller build and in her 30s. She was wearing a slim fitted Caroline's collared shirt with khaki shorts. If she was a manager, she's a sorry excuse for one. After asking is for drink orders, she told all of us that 'it was odd our ID's were vertical.' I'm a Florida resident, who's ID doesn't expire for another year and it is none of her business if my ID is vertical or horizontal. I shouldn't have to explain myself and be questioned for being a law abiding citizen trying to order a drink. But it's ok, I will never go back because of her nasty, aggressive attitude. My husband and I were walking Duval St. looking for a place for dinner. It was our first visit to Key West. We stopped at Caroline's and I am glad that we did. Our dinner was amazing. I had a blackened fish with broccoli and plantains. I could only eat about half because the portion was large and was disappointed I couldn't eat the rest. It was so yummy. Our waitress was friendly and efficient on a crazy busy night. Now that I have returned home, I can honestly say that it was the best meal that I had in my few days of visiting key West. read more

Last night we had dinner at the restaurant, we were a large party of 11 people. The food tasted marvelous, the manager and our waitress were super friendly and extremely accommodating. We have been going this restaurant on all of our trips down from Miami for eight years. I have probably been there 20 times. The food is great. They do Fish Sandwiches and burgers that are great. They also have lots of salads, and the value is the best in Key West. It is mostly outside and casual with a view of duval Street, so don't go if you want some private hideaway, but they serve fresh local fish, and I always get the Kingston Chicken or Jambalaya. The staff is consistently friendly and professional. Do yourself a favor, after you try one of the expensive places hidden somewhere that you hunted all over to find, stop at Caroline's for lunch the next day. You'll spend way less, get way more (and better) food, and you'll have a great time. I used to work at an information booth and I always (and still will) recommend this place. Whenever someone asks me for a good place to eat. This is the one I recommend most! This restaurant is very well priced and the food is awesome. It was a beautiful Key West late afternoon when we stopped in for dinner and the food was awesome. We ordered the shrimp quesadilla appetizer and I had the fish sandwich, while my partner had some sort of salad with chicken, bacon and carmelized nuts in it. This place has great drinks! We went on New Year's Eve and they made the drinks pretty quick! The bartenders were really friendly and relaxed and all around we loved it! We went again a few days later and ordered appetizers and a couple of drinks at the table. We had the bruschetta and tex mex rolls and devoured them! Yum! Our waitress was super nice and the drinks came relatively quick for how busy it was at 3PM. Definitely want to come back for an actual meal because everything in the kitchen looked great coming out. The place was fairly packed, but we were still seated and served relatively fast. The staff were extremely nice, and all had a good energy and talkative, i-care-about-my-customers vibe. This place was delicious. I was seated immediately with no wait time even though the restaurant and area around it were extremely busy. The Redenbacher Shrimp App was very good, good size and came out quickly. The servers are good at recommending food. They even combined two different entree's for me into one sandwich! The food was good, service was very poor. Our server needed an attitude adjustment. Never smiled once, was not welcoming and I asked for ice 3 times. When she finally came she said "didn't I bring you some" she could have seen there was no cup with ice on the table. We also ordered appetizers and food does not need to come with the appetizers. This was the second time we had visited Caroline's, the first time was wonderful, this time not so much. My water cup was served to me covered in lipstick from someone else. I would have given the waiter the benefit of the doubt until she said she would fix it and brought back the same glass with lipstick still on the side. The cocktails were less than par, almost undrinkable. The mojito I ordered was not muddled together at all and was made with some very poor grade well vodka. The food was just ok this time. The appetizer we ordered which were some sort of southwest egg rolls were good and served in large portions. The entrees were also huge. My husband got a chicken sandwich that was good and I got an Asian salad. I was disappointed in the flavors of the salad and the blandness of the chicken. We had lunch here during our stay. Both meals came out quickly although my fries were cold. When we told our waitress, she was polite and quickly put in a new order for me. The shrimp po boy was great and the Cajun chicken was also great! It was able to be ordered based on how spicy you wanted it which for me was great because I don't enjoy too much spice! Very disappointed! We had the pasta primavera with shrimp instead of chicken. What a mess- I should have ordered soup with shrimp. Literally, it was a bowl of soup with shrimp thrown in. My partner had a club sandwich which was good. We informed the bartender who was disinterested in quality of food. I watched this bartender who was super efficient behind the bar and fast! For my birthday, my three friends and I decided to visit Key West for the weekend. I'll begin this by saying this was a traumatic and humiliating experience for me and my girlfriends. My friend approached the host stand at 10:15 (the restaurant closes at 11:30.) It took about 7 minutes before a female employee appeared, sharply asked how many were in our party, and shooed us away with her hands to wait on the sidewalk. She did not ask for a name or put us on any sort of waitlist. Three parties arrived about 15 minutes after us, asked for a table, and were sat almost immediately. I must add that all of us are servers. My friend then approached the woman who rudely greeted us and told her that we had been waiting for a table for awhile (25 minutes) and she had sat multiple parties that came after us, and asked politely if we would be sat soon. The waitress did not apologize and proceeded to angrily wave her arms around and say, "A ton of people came in at once." She then walks over to a dirty table, furiously wiped it with a dry towel (no cleaning solution, in the middle of COVID-19) and sat us there. We then are greeted by the same unpleasant, hostile server. We ask for a round of waters, then she comes back to take our order. Three of us ATTEMPTED to order alcoholic beverages with our vertical, but perfectly legal and valid Florida driver's licenses. The woman took each ID and made an elaborate show of analyzing each for a long, awkward 45 seconds. She took a deep breath and angrily snapped, repeating herself over and over about how ODD and SUSPICIOUS it was that all of our ID's were vertical and yet we were trying to order alcohol. Instead of skipping the circus act and just confiscating our IDs or simply refusing to serve the alcohol, she chose to verbally abuse us in front of a full restaurant and talk to us like dogs, not paying customers. I felt like we were being kicked out by the volume and hateful tone we were met with, so we decided to take our business elsewhere. I have never felt more humiliated or confused in a dining experience before, especially for a birthday experience that was supposed to be special. I thought that Caroline's was supposed to be a reputable restaurant in Key West, but next time I'll just save myself the embarrassment and go to McDonald's. Perhaps Caroline's should conduct psychological evaluations before hiring unhinged and unreasonably petulant staff members. To save you and your family's valuable money, here is a description. We didn't happen to catch the waitress's name, but she was a white woman with medium brown hair in a French braid, and was likely in her early to mid 30s. She wore a cloth tie-dye mask, khaki shorts, and a navy Caroline's polo shirt. There are plenty of restaurants across the street that are much cleaner and will treat you like a human being. read more

Really great food I had the Caroline's Famous Fish Sandwich and my husband had a Cuban Sandwich with the Conch Fritters to start. Everything was delicious. I also recommend the Rum Runner. The service was excellent. The restaurant is in a shaded patio but they have misters so it was comfortable. Next time I'm in Key West I'll definitely go back. read more

Caroline's is a must for Duval street tourists, especially when wanting some good food for a good price after shelling out the big bucks Key West is notorious for demanding. We visit Caroline's each time we come; the staff is always very friendly and welcoming, the outdoor seating is shaded and fanned, and the menu is diverse but not overwhelming. For a quick bite, their sandwiches and salads come in many varieties (note their Grilled Shrimp BLT) and with big portions, which is the only downside as leftovers are a guarantee with me and I don't like toting around doggy bags on our walks. Their special dishes can be higher priced ($15-$20) but husband had the skirt steak one visit and it was wonderful! Caroline's has a good selection of tropical drinks that taste innocent but pack a punch, worth the price to me. Rest assured that if you see Key West on my itinerary, Caroline's will always be pencilled in! read more

Total tourist trap. If you're ok with fried, frozen food, then this will do. But if you want fresh fish...well...you will be disappointed. The service was ok and the food mediocre and overpriced. We had the Tex-mex rolls for an appetizer. It was very bland and greasy. Then we had the shrimp po boy and a mahi sandwich as a main course. The po boy was average and the mahi sandwich tasted too fishy. We are keys locals and frequent many seafood restaurants in the Keys that have fresh fish and this was definitely off. Not fresh. And the fish was so very thin way overpriced. By the way, we asked the waiter about the type of fish they used for "Caroline's Famous Fish Sandwich" and he said it was Basa, a Caribbean fish. What? Caribbean? Really? Maybe he thought we didn't know our fish, or that we didn't have internet access to check. BTW, just FYI, Basa is from the Vietnam region. GRAND GALLANTRY AND GREAT GRUB I yelped "cheeseburger" and asked the guy at the front desk to pick a place from the list that yelp gave me. He didn't even look at it. He just said "Caroline's", held up the menu, and told me he was JUST getting ready to order a cheeseburger from there when I had walked up. Close to the hotel (of course), no wait for a seat. We had a great waiter. Brent was polite, fast, and attentive. The cheeseburger was huge, juicy, and delicious. Good fries, good drink, cooling misters and fans blowing. My burger was so big that I was full before I finished it. But it was so scrumptious that dammit, finish it I did. After my meal I sat there incapacitated and happy. This is the gallantry part. I called Brent over for the check. Got it quickly. Stuck the credit card into the folder. Swatted a fly. Credit card ejected, flew out over the railing, and into the street. There was the sound of trumpets playing, from out of nowhere the tall, good-looking Brent emerged, vaulted GALLANTLY (get it?) over the rail, dashed into traffic, and retrieved my approved method of payment. There's nothing about this restaurant I didn't like. I recommend it, and Brent, to anyone who wants great food and great service. I made up the trumpet part. Nothing to recommend about this place. A typical tourist trap with bad food, weak drinks and overpriced entrees. Avoid the restaurants by the water and those on Duval and try and find small local places for good food. There is a wonderful place called Incas, and a Banana something place, and the Cuban Coffee Shop. There must be many more. read more

ok, I happen to have a fondness for the Hard Rock Cafe, but why people go to the HR when Caroline's is across the street is a mystery to me. What sets Caroline's apart from a zillion other casual spots along Duval are the consistently good food (if you do nothing else, try their fish sandwich), all the outdoor seating (score a seat by the railing for great people-watching), and the friendly, professional service (at least on my two visits). I even think their key lime pie is better than most I tried in KW. This is my go-to place in the center of Old Town. read more
