Carol is great! I've long been a barbershop-only guy, but was lured in by the location and price: $10 for a men's cut, and it's right in the Hardscrabble Plaza in Red Hook. I left highly impressed. Carol did a great job - far better than my recent barbers - and she clearly knew her stuff. She took the time to listen to what I wanted, and seemed to understand how hair works, so she could work with/around my cowlick and thinning areas. I feel like the odd woman out, but I had a hair cutting accident (nothing major, but not good) and don't have a salon in the area and I'm not from it. I left a message, but didn't receive a call back. I called again and got an appointment for the same day with Craig. My hair is extremely long, but has usually just a bit of layering in front, which needed to be corrected. Craig wasn't happy, didn't greet me besides telling me to hang my coat, I kept feeling obliged to keep the conversation going before I sat in the chair because I was nervous, but it didn't work, so I sat. My hair was cut dry. To fix it, Craig did a total of five cuts and then cut a bit off the back. It took five minutes (probably less than that). I said, "Is that it? Are we done?" He handed me a mirror, but I couldn't see. I told him this, but he just said it was done. I didn't know what to say because how do you say, "Could you actually cut my hair?" So, I not only paid but gave him a $5 tip. That's when he was nice for the first time and gave me a card for the shop. When I came home, I looked and my minor problem not didn't have long layers (as was promised, but had three shelves). I had this fixed elsewhere, but UGH. I think Craig probably does great hair for twenty years ago if he's in a good mood, but if you have long hair or if he's in a bad mood, I'd avoid. Carol is always friendly and accommodating if you're in a bind. She's fit me into the schedule for a quick cut several times! I never do anything too complicated, hair wise, but my review reflects customer service and quality of a simple cut. read more

Although I can't speak about price(as my grandmother paid completely for my haircut today), I can speak to you about the rest of the place. My haircut was fairly painless. I went in there for a "normal men's haircut" and that just what I got. Although the cutter had an incoming call during the cutting experience, she was able to silence the call on her cell phone(which laid nearby). I do thank her for silencing it and putting her daily life to the side at that moment. But I wasn't the only one that got there hair cut today in my family. My brother's did also. Although they wanted an extremely short (3) style haircut, they were able to conform to their requests too. Thanks. You're a good place to use in a pinch, and, being pushed into getting a haircut by my grandmother, I was surprised that they were able to fit me into their schedule(which was busy at the time). read more

I recently returned to the Hudson Valley after years away and was in desperate need of a cut/trim to correct a bad haircut. I hadn't been to Carols since I was a child but decided to try for a walk in. Kelly was the available stylist and she gave me a fantastic, precise cut! She was super sweet, she listened carefully, gave me exactly what I asked for, and I was out the door 15 mins later. Will definitely be seeing Kelly again, 5 stars for her!!! read more

In this bad economy you would think every small business would welcome a new client with open arms. WELL, not this "downscale" salon. I made an appointment for a cut (I have long hair and needed a bit more than a trim) and the person who made the appointment for me was very very nice. I walked in a few minutes before my appointment and there were about 4 stylists on the floor...3 were with customers in their chairs and one didn't seem to have a client. They all looked up at me and didn't say a word...not a "hello" , "can I help you" or even "what the heck do you want"..nothing..it was as if I didn't exist. I stood there for about a minute or so smiling and looking around at the salon and still not a word. Needless to say I walked out and that was that. I was fortunate enough to to get an appoinment in another salon in Kingston and let me tell you..the girl who cut my hair is an amazing hair dresser AND the entire staff were so warm and friendly. I usually don't feel compelled to ever write a bad review about any small business but the lack of courtesy and professionalism I received from this Hair Salon made me feel as if I didn't have a choice. I am a great customer and I tip really really well so it's truly their loss. Shame on you Carol's Cutting Edge. read more
