This is the cutest place with tons of every kind of taffy you can imagine. On a family specific request we drove to pick up Chili Mango taffy. We ended up bringing more home than we intended. The sales helper had us sample a few varieties and naturally we ended up buying 3 pounds. I do t know if they do this every time but, we got a free bag of taffy because we bought 3 pounds! Taffy heaven! My wife rues the night we stumbled in because I probably left with my weight in taffy. You'll see a seemingly endless row of barrels filled with the delicious seaside treat. They have traditional flavors like blueberry, honey, chocolate, or strawberry, while inventive flavors like passion fruit, egg nog, maple bacon, and so on many others will pique your interest while titillating your tastebuds. I can't think of a single flavor that I didn't like. The fruity flavors were quite tasty, but the stars for me were sweeter flavors with either a caramel or chocolate undertone. One of my favorite memories from childhood is summer at the Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, riding the bumper cars and eating Dolle's salt water taffy. The taste of that taffy WAS summer. So you can imagine how I felt when I saw the signs for a shop specializing in salt water taffy right here in Morro Bay; it took me back at LEAST 30 years. One gains entrance to this amazing emporium through the gateway to heaven topped by a sign announcing Carousel Taffy 70 Flavors - free sample. Yes, you read that correctly. each customer is allowed ONE free sample of salt water taffy. Bright pink signs posted throughout reminded me to practice some #selfcontrol and stick to that single piece of free heaven. Upon closer inspection, the signs gave me an out by promising to allow me to try an additional 1-5 pieces for an additional charge of only $1. That may seem a bit miserly, but the same sign also proclaimed that if you purchased 3 pounds or more, they would gift you a prepackaged one pound bag of taffy so they can't be ALL bad. A quick glance across the middle of the store and you'll see where they got their namesake. There is a little mini carousel in the middle with stuffed pink and blue horses. I'm not sure how this ties in with the seaside town, but we were on a mission to acquire salt water taffy and didn't stop to question. Imagine every variety of salt water taffy that could be made. Now imagine some flavors that nobody would ever have the guts to make. Yeah... this place carries EVEN MORE flavors than that. And every single one of them we tried was a hit. Maple Bacon? Oh, yeah, baby - solid flavors and well balanced. That'll do, pig. Chili Mango? At first I didn't find this flavor very spicy. Tasty, but not too spicy. Then I noticed that there was still a little spicy tingle on my tongue even several minutes after eating each piece. I'm on board. Coconut? Tropical. Rum? Smooth. Key Lime? Pomegranate? Tangy. We took a basket and carefully chose several pieces out of each of the flavors that appealed to us most. The line was long and a wee bit confusing but the cashier and candy weighing lady were working together like a well oiled machine and kept us flowing right through the process and had us back out on the street before we know it. The rest of the afternoon we playing taffy roulette pulling out flavors and trying to guess what the were from the color combinations before tasting each one. Let's not think about the calories, the sugar high, or the damage I may have done to my teeth. Let's just talk about all the added value from strolling up and down the street sharing a little bag of sweet sugary goodness amped by a sweet flood of nostalgia. Life is good. read more

Walk in the door and the friendly employees will let you taste any single piece of taffy for free. Then grab a bucket and go crazy loading up on tons of unique flavors. They have a great texture and don't stick to your teeth like some taffy brands I've had. I really thought the flavors I bought tasted good but I have to agree with Randoll C. on the fact they do all taste pretty similar with just a small variation in taste. Taffy overload. It what I felt as I stood in the middle of this store surrounded by pound after pound of different flavors of Taffy. There were so many different flavors that I equate it to being at a restaurant looking at a menu that has too many choices to choose from. It helps that you can sample a flavor before you decide to buy but I feel like they all start tasting the same after you try a few. It's just under $10 a pound and you basically grab a bucket, or what looks like a witch's cauldron with a handle and start filling it up. All along the central coast from Pismo to Morro Bay, every shop seems to sell some type of saltwater taffy. And almost all of them taste like they've been waiting to be consumed for months. I almost dislocated my jaw working on a piece of apple pie taffy from some place. Not the case at Carousel. Wife and I had a great time going through here and making our custom bag. Lots of good flavors and we honestly couldn't find an old piece. They all tasted fresh. Some of the crazier flavors aren't the greatest, but it doesn't matter because you'll easily find a bunch that you like. I'll be honest, this is one of the main reasons we like to stop in Morro Bay. You walk into this place and you feel like a kid again. There are huge barrels of taffy everywhere! The woman at the counter was very sweet and offered us a free sample of any flavor we wanted. So, I walked around a while and finally saw a sign that said 'Strawberry Cheesecake'. I grabbed one and tried it. I knew I had to buy some. It was $9 per pound and if you bought 3 lbs, you got another lb free. The taffy tasted fresh. It was soft and each one tasted just like what it was supposed to taste like! We bought the 3 lbs and she gave us a 1 lb bag of assorted taffy with a little ribbon on it. I was under the impression we would get to pick out the flavors we wanted of the free lb. Taffy is Taffy. The only difference is fresh taffy from stale taffy. Rude, rude, rude and obviously bored employee hit us with the RULES of shopping there before the HELLO. My daughter and I were the only patrons there. Lol. She must have ran any potential shoppers off. I told my daughter I would wait outside, even though taffy was all I talked about on our 20 minute drive there. My daughter walked out. Which was the right thing to do. She should be fired! First time visit here...always thought "taffy is taffy". Wrong. This stuff is in a class of its own. The flavors are intense in a delightful way. Glad they do mail order so I will be able to get some whenever. The store is spotless and they take Covid precautions seriously, which I like. We easily spent nearly $20 on taffy, and my only regret was that we didn't get more. It's funny... seems to be almost all the beach town has at least one "taffy" store in town. I had a craving for some sweet treat as we walk around the pier we stopped by to get some taffy. There are tons of flavors, I especially liked the raspberry taffy. I walked around and got things I liked, and there was only like 9 pieces in the bucket. So I went around again and doubled the quantity.... couple days later I am still working on the taffy... my dentist would shake her head with disapproval but I am hoping that my filling won't come off!! Free tasting meaning you can just pick and eat some for tasting, but I just feel so guilty doing so... I'm such a chicken, huh? read more

We bypass the other taffy locations in the area and beeline for Carousel. The barrels of flavors are endless. Caramel corn, lemon meringue, passion fruit, caramel apple, watermelon... the list goes on. Prices are $9.50/lb which is a bit steep, but how can you pass up candy corn, raspberry lemonade, buttered popcorn, chocolate chip cookies and birthday cake taffy? You just can't. Your obligation as a taffy lover demands you to get right in there, wreck your teeth and be a dentist's dream. I highly recommend Extra Hot. It might be a bit much for the young one since its cinnamon-y with a hint of pepper, but it will help you get over the buttery-ness of the buttered popcorn in a flash. read more

I have this thing about piers and taffy shops. Any time I go to a pier or boardwalk I have to buy taffy, not sure why but it feels like a moral obligation. Carousel Taffy does not disappoint! The staff was very helpful when we came in. They have flavors galore and it was only about $10 for a pound. Let's be real, I don't need a pound of taffy but I'll take it. My favorite flavor is/was (I ate all of it) was the mango chili (I believe that's what it was called), huckleberry was also great. I also bought some sugar free ones to try and be healthier, those were also good. You can't really go wrong with taffy so if you're ever in the area make sure to stop by! read more
