Up until 2 weeks ago, I would have never thought of going to Walmart for vision issues. I ranked it right up there as if they had surgeons on staff (would you go get your appendix out at a place like this). I was completely wrong. This office has just about the same modern equipment as my previous optometrist minus the very expensive Opto-map. Initially you sit down and get checked for glaucoma, initial prescription measurement and some other device. In the main room, he broke out all the fun stuff from the funky eyeglasses to a huge assortment of headgear, lights, hand held lenses and charts. Overall I was in the office for over a half hour. This visit was way longer than my previous doctor. What was nice is that he explained every step he was doing. Overall, I felt as though I received more than I paid for. Excellent! I know for a fact that every aspect, angles, inside/outside of my eyes were checked. Wow. I never left any previous doctor with this feeling before. The outside staff is a bit bland on their customer interaction but guess what, I kind of liked it. No hand holding, hovering, forcing you to buy the most expensive stuff. He pushed the script to me and began to process my initial contact order. I had to ask him to buy glasses on top. Nice! NO Pressure! Overall the pricing is excellent. Copay, contact fitting, 1 pair of titanium, transitions, full scratch/glare protection, another pair of Safety Prescription glasses and disposable contacts for....$680. I don't know about you but if you go to some doc's that is the cost of 1 pair! I think I paid 500 bucks for my previous pair of glasses. Thank you WalMart. I will be going to your Vision Centers from now on. You helped me realize how much the markup is on glasses. Opto-map? Quick comment. It's a costly machine which takes a picture of your retina for the doc to scan on a PC's display. Much hype but insurance usually doesn't cover it. This doc uses light and lenses to peer into your eye and inspect the retina. Same thing, old school. WORD!

It had been years since I was there, and even then, I had only been once every two years or so. It was really nice to be put at ease with a courteous, personal and kind staff. The paperwork was just one double sided piece of paper, the wait was short and the exam itself moved quickly. My eyes aren't very bad at all, and so maybe other's experience will be different, but in under 30 minutes I was in and out with new contacts and an updated prescription. Also, the team there is 100% honest. Each procedure was clearly explained to me, and the fees associated with things my insurance would not cover was discussed before getting any work done. So not like they don't tell you lies honest, but they genuinely took the time to explain each procedure and not up-charge me just because I'm ignorant to the medical world of eyes. I typically go the cheap Chinese direct glasses (because I break a pair every 3 months or so) - but when I had them in the past, I was able to get my glasses that same day. I'm sure depending on your prescription and frame choice - that's not always going to be the case, but they are on top of their stuff, and as quickly as it can be done - it is. Anyways - I would never think to go anywhere else to have my eyes checked out as I actually look forward to the friendly staff here.

It also happens to be the main reason I sought out Lumen Eye Care as my new go-to for all things optometry. Well, that and....wifey already goes here and vouches for them hard. Recently relocated to the Northeastern boulevard, you may be forgiven if you struggle to find their suite upon first visit. Just look for the giant glasses next to the front door and you'll spot them straight away. Of course, you'll have to park across the street, but that's a minor inconvenience, at worst. I have to admit...first impressions were most pleasant. The office is clean, pristine, and a welcoming scene. Heh! I'm a poet and I didn't even know it. Snoogans! XD But seriously folks, the docs here will treat you with the best of care. The initial wait was a bit longer than expected, given the lack of patients at the time. But that can mostly be forgiven, considering how far more advanced their technology is compared to past optometrists I've visited. That's what brought me here in the first place. I find that in my "old" age (and I say that rather dubiously), keeping up with the recommended annual check-ups proves to be most crucial. I've worn readers for a few years now. As such, I want to make sure I'm wearing the appropriate prescription at the time it's needed. Every procedure here is carried out with precision, speed, and professionalism. The "head doc" (as I'll affectionately call her) was unexpectedly warm and kind. Then again, I've likely had my original view of optometrists tainted by my past experiences with military doctors. Yeah...they tend to scrape the bottom of the barrel when it comes to selecting those personality types. But, I digress. So, perhaps the bar was low going in. Nevertheless, I couldn't be more pleased with Lumen's practices. Enrolling into their database was simple and only required 3 signatures. As I alluded to in the beginning, they accept VA sponsorship; which is a HUGE win in my book! Plus, I really can't say enough good things about their updated equipment. And for those wondering, they use an ophthalmoscope (don't try saying that 3 times fast) to view the insides of your eyeball--as opposed to dilating your pupils so wide you come out looking like Hermey the elf. IYKYK. Now, I can't speak to their prices for eyewear. I'd only caution the average consumer to purchase their glasses online somewhere--especially if you only need readers. IMHO, there is NO reason to purchase glasses likely priced in the triple digits that you'll only need to wear part time anyway. Unless there's a frame set you're just DYING to have, I really don't see the point. Someone should have told that one guy who visited back in May of this year (also, don't buy Ray-Bans?). Inflated prices aside though, I don't think that warrants a one star review against this place. But that's just MY opinion. Anyway, I have to come back here in a few months to check on some...questionable marks in the back of my eyeball. But that's merely a testament to their meticulous nature.
