I I was shown where to sit (to wait for my appointment), and proceed to fill out my paperwork. When I told her I filled it out on line, she thanked me for doing that (recommended). I then met Janna Mendenhall, OD. I was given a through exam, with extra attention to a problem I was having. She was professional, with a great personality. She even took the time to look up an eye surgeon for me to follow up with. Wrote down three names. I picked out a pair of glasses, with no pressure, or up selling (I would be having surgery my glasses would only be for a couple of months, as my RX would change). Gave me great feedback on my choices. I could not be happier.

It's a neolithic practice that should get tossed in a dumpster fire next to the likes of fax machines and Blackberries. It also happens to be the main reason I sought out Lumen Eye Care as my new go-to for all things optometry. Well, that and....wifey already goes here and vouches for them hard. Recently relocated to the Northeastern boulevard, you may be forgiven if you struggle to find their suite upon first visit. Just look for the giant glasses next to the front door and you'll spot them straight away. Of course, you'll have to park across the street, but that's a minor inconvenience, at worst. I have to admit...first impressions were most pleasant. The office is clean, pristine, and a welcoming scene. Heh! I'm a poet and I didn't even know it. Snoogans! XD But seriously folks, the docs here will treat you with the best of care. The initial wait was a bit longer than expected, given the lack of patients at the time. But that can mostly be forgiven, considering how far more advanced their technology is compared to past optometrists I've visited. That's what brought me here in the first place. I find that in my "old" age (and I say that rather dubiously), keeping up with the recommended annual check-ups proves to be most crucial. I've worn readers for a few years now. As such, I want to make sure I'm wearing the appropriate prescription at the time it's needed. Every procedure here is carried out with precision, speed, and professionalism. The "head doc" (as I'll affectionately call her) was unexpectedly warm and kind. Then again, I've likely had my original view of optometrists tainted by my past experiences with military doctors. Yeah...they tend to scrape the bottom of the barrel when it comes to selecting those personality types. But, I digress. So, perhaps the bar was low going in. Nevertheless, I couldn't be more pleased with Lumen's practices. Enrolling into their database was simple and only required 3 signatures. As I alluded to in the beginning, they accept VA sponsorship; which is a HUGE win in my book! Plus, I really can't say enough good things about their updated equipment. And for those wondering, they use an ophthalmoscope (don't try saying that 3 times fast) to view the insides of your eyeball--as opposed to dilating your pupils so wide you come out looking like Hermey the elf. IYKYK. Now, I can't speak to their prices for eyewear. I'd only caution the average consumer to purchase their glasses online somewhere--especially if you only need readers. IMHO, there is NO reason to purchase glasses likely priced in the triple digits that you'll only need to wear part time anyway. Unless there's a frame set you're just DYING to have, I really don't see the point. Someone should have told that one guy who visited back in May of this year (also, don't buy Ray-Bans?). Inflated prices aside though, I don't think that warrants a one star review against this place. But that's just MY opinion. Anyway, I have to come back here in a few months to check on some...questionable marks in the back of my eyeball. But that's merely a testament to their meticulous nature. Lumen Eye Care is worth 5 VERY relieved, normal sized pupils out of 5.

And I've always been able to get an appointment time convenient for me. The optical center, however, I'd give 3 stars. The selection is good, but we came back 5 times to try to get my son's glasses fitted properly so they don't slide halfway down his nose. Finally gave up and drive 45 mins to a place we trust that fixed the problem in 2 minutes. I will continue to come for the exams, no question. But I'll take the prescription elsewhere to buy glasses.

It makes me sad to leave this review because in I think everyone who works here is very kind and…read morewell meaning, but this was such an unusual and upsetting experience that I hope can be prevented and avoided in future. I flunked my first contact application appointment and I booked a second appointment for contacts at 3:30 hesitantly, explaining I wouldn't be able to arrive until 3:40. I was assured this would be fine. I arrived at 3:40 and went into the doctors' office around 4:10/4:20. I had practiced beforehand and was able to put the contacts in (hooray!). I had an unexpectedly really hard time getting the contacts out though. After trying for a while and asking for help, my doctor Amanda Gannon told me she "didn't know what to tell me" and that if I couldn't get them out by myself or with assistance that I would have to go to the ER and have them surgically removed and that MyEyeDoctor was closing in 10 minutes. She kept telling me that I had to get the contacts out and that they were closing until I started crying. She kindly told me she would wait until I could get them off and after the pressure was taken off, I was able to take out the contacts. She told me I had "gotten myself worked up" and that I would most likely be able to put contacts in at home. I was surprised to see that I left exactly at 5, which is when MyEyeDoctor closes. I can't imagine how hard these eye doctors are working and how much they want to get home, but this is one of those experiences in healthcare that will stick with me. I appreciate the doctor giving me some extra time, but I really feel like this whole thing could have been avoided with different scheduling or with my doctor easing up when she realized I was struggling with the contacts. I did wind up getting them out in time for closing, but I was really scared and upset. Lovely front of desk people, nurses, and doctors, and I've had very positive experiences with my glasses, so perhaps this was just a bad day.

They were loved by the community and their customer care was impeccable. Tommy could deal with anyone... even a few crabby dissatisfied customers but he was ALWAYS able to work with EVERYONE and he always took the high road. These reviews were well earned by HIM. The establishment was bought out by Christina and Enrico Palmerino several years ago now. They also own several other local Optical shops.. one is in Brooklyn New York. Since they took over in Newburyport the new business has received only 4 yelp reviews... 2 (5) star reviews and 2 (1) star reviews. Where I am from this is a significant red flag showing that this business needs improvement. It is also sad that Chrisina and Enrico did not wipe out Tommy's reviews because he and Dianne and several other employees worked very hard for those reviews! They should not be inherited they should be earned! My experience with the new owners has been rocky and unpleasant. The acting manager Clark Goodwin is a big part of the problem here at this business. Clark is moody, dismissive and he talks down to good customers. I returned 2 pairs of high end glasses three years ago and he was livid with me and he behaved unprofessionally towards me. Clark Goodwin sadly is the antithesis of what Tommy Collins was! I want to warn ALL of my disabled veteran friends , my healthcare friends ( retired RN here) and all the wonderful seniors in the area to take your business somewhere else. This company has no heart... they are a family of millionaires who could care less about customers and providing quality services to the residents of Newburyport. She helped me navigate questions about insurance and clearly had my best interest at heart. Veenu Gill O.D. provided my care with the same warmth and efficiency. She answered my questions, explained what she was doing, and was incredibly thoughtful with her recommendations. Because of these two women (and Jessica, who was taking notes), my visit was easy, comfortable, and somehow enjoyable. Do yourself a favor and go to this location if you need care (or just a pair of glasses!). You'll be glad you did it from the moment you schedule the visit (great scheduling system) to when you walk out the door.
