I've lived here for almost 7 years and just now discovered this little, understated treasure. The ambiance is cute and almost an Alice in Wonderland kind of feel. The folks who run it are really nice and the lunch is great. We had a larger group for what their tables are set up for, but they happily accommodated us. However if you plan to have more than six people in your party, you might have to go elsewhere. Oh yes, and the carrot cake is pretty amazing! read more

I had a friend come into town and as we were driving we found this place. It looks like it was an old motel. From the outside it is not super cute; but all in all who cares about the aesthetics of the outside of a building? When we came in we were greeted by an older woman that to me acted like one of my British aunts. She was not rude but she was a bit snippy by American standards. We were taken to our seats by another older woman; very kind. We both ordered completely different meals and shared. She got a 4 course number that was amazing! The fruit salad with mint yogurt dressing was light and refreshing, the tomato bisque was creamy, thick and out of this world, I didn't try her sandwich (Melted cheese and ham on thick bread looked a lot like a panini) but she said it was good, then she got the carrot cake. I got a BBQ sandwich and a potato salad. The sandwich was good nothing super special about it, you get that kind a lot around VA. The potato salad was awesome. Potatoes were cooked perfectly, and the fresh dill really lifted the dish. I got the mousse cupcake. The carrot cake and the Mousse cupcake were astounding but if I had to choose (being the chocoholic I am) I would have to choose the carrot cake. It had a good amount of spice to it without being over powering and a good amount of nuts just to balance the heavy cake. The mousse cupcake was very good, fresh, but way too much frosting for my liking (you get gobs of frosting on that specific cake and I didn't take that into consideration when ordering). We looked on Yelp for a good place to eat lunch while on vacation. We didn't check yelp for dinner the night before and paid for it. The Carrot Tree was a hit with all six of us. The kids had huge pb&j sandwiches which they devoured. I had the BBQ sandwich and it was great. They have the best potato salad. read more

This review is for their carrot cake only. WOW. I don't even like carrot cake, heck half the time I avoid eating it (not a veggie person lol) but this carrot cake took the cake (pun intended). The carrot cake was really moist (most impressed), didn't take super-carroty, and the frosting was just sweet enough for the cake. I would definitely recommend others to come and try out there carrot cake (just be sure to make it in by 3pm as they close super early). read more

We passed this place on the way to Jamestown settlement. Everyone should stop in here and definitely try it. The prices on everything were very reasonable, with lunch for two people at about $26 people including drinks and two appetizers. I would suggest their soups and ham biscuits. The place appears to be an old motel that was converted into a restaurant, which i thought was an interesting re-imagination. In Williamsburg, there are many tourist traps that charge a lot and offer very little; this is not one of those locations. read more

I have lived in 7 states and 2 countries and have never tasted carrot cake this delicious. Literally I have one sent to me every year around birthday time. It's rich, moist, dense flavors explode in your mouth. The frosting is so rich it's hard to finish one slice. If you love carrot cake this is nirvana. read more

Our family went to Williamsburg on vacation and ate lunch here one day. Overall the food was pretty good. I got a puff pastry with vegetables in it. It was very tasty. It came with a cup of tomato soup. The soup was the best tomato soup I've ever had! I would highly recommend it. My husband got a sampler platter that came with a scoop or chicken salad, scoop of tuna salad, and a scoop of egg salad (I think this was the 3rd). It was served with crackers. It was okay, but nothing special. I was glad I didn't order that as I liked mine much better. My kids got kids meals. Their sandwiches were okay. They came with a choice or a cookie or brownie. They picked the brownies, but they weren't that tasty. We also got a slice of key lime pie and carrot cake. Both of those were very good! I would definitely come back here again if we ever return to Williamsburg. Oh, I almost forgot we also bought a container of swedish meatballs and tuna casserole that we heated up for our dinner that night. Everyone really liked the meatballs. The tuna casserole was okay, but I probably wouldn't get it again. We also got variety box of their dessert bars cut into triangles. My favorite was the raspberry bar. I don't think I'd get the variety box again though because it wasn't much cheaper than buying them individually and it contained the brownies, which I don't find very tasty. read more

for lunch the carrot tree is a welcome place to get a sandwich and a bowl of soup. The real treasure in this restaurant is obviously the carrot cake and the other baked goods that are on display for both dessert at your meal or for takeout. We had the ham biscuits which needed a little bit more of what they call chutney and a turkey wrap the Ulysses S Grant. Both were good but not necessarily any sort of stand out. read more

The staff was friendly and helpful , the restaurant was clean and cheerful. Service was quick and food was very good. I had a tuna melt with a side of potato salad for lunch , my husband had Brunswick stew cup of soup with a large ham, cheddar sandwich. I thought it was a little bit pricey for lunch. About $12. For my husbands sandwich with a cup of soup and $9 for my tuna melt, with a very small side of potato salad, like a ice cream soup size . I've been lunching at the Carrot Tree for a few years now and have yet to have anything that is less than delicious. Debbie knows how to make wonderful sandwiches, soups and desserts. I am a refular fan of the Yorktown Onion and the General Grant, and her tomatoe basil soup is truly amazing, even in the dead of winter when you know the tomatoes are not summer fresh. It's not cheap, but the sandwiches come with a side. My only complaint is the plastic plates and cuttlery. But I even overlook those for a chance to dine at this wonderful local eatery read more

We stopped here for lunch on our second day in Williamsburg. Service was prompt, food was good, and the dessert was yummy. The restaurant has moved to a new location on Jamestown road. The old location was strange, but had ambience. The new location is stark, way too bright and lacks any feel. Best sandwhices in Williamsburg hands down. The chicken club is my favorite. Their chicken salad is absolutely amazing! The resteraunt itself is pretty small, but gives a real comfy, home like experience. One of the last few scratch kitchens in the area. We drove all over Williamsburg looking for a breakfast restaurant that didn't have a wait list, line out of the door, and full parking lot before returning to the Carrot Tree. We wanted pancakes or omelettes. Carrot Tree refuses to offer this favorite breakfast fare on Sunday mornings, but we still gave the fall menu a try as a last resort. We found the Carrot Tree nearly empty and waitresses downcast, hostess playing on her phone. When we finally found something to order, it turned out the kitchen wasn't stocked to even supply menu items. I had a dry croissant and a stale rugalech with coffee. My husband had 2 egg and cheese croissants and tea. Our bill was $30. Not our plan for Sunday morning brunch. read more

We had a great light lunch here. Perfect for leaving room for the selection of yummy desserts which were the highlight of the meal. Each of us ordered a different dessert. The carrot cake, key lime pie, red velvet cake cupcake, and double chocolate cupcake were all delicious.
