This place used to be outstanding. Sadly, it has declined significantly. I am guessing that there are staffing issues and they don't have the same chef. The food used to be outstanding. In the three times that I've come here over the past three months (Mother's Day, a random dinner and then again today) the food was not edible. For Mother's Day I got eggs that were not cooked as ordered, toast with butter when I asked for dry (twice it came back with butter on it) and a tiny portion of burned potatoes (two table spoons worth). A breakfast dish for close to $20 and it didn't even taste good (compare to a diner that serves eggs as you request with bread, meat and potatoes for about $10). I was very disappointed as I remember how a few years ago they had large chunks of corn beef in their outstanding hash (no longer a menu item). Today, i came back to give it a second chance, I ordered the pastrami salmon sandwich. It came on a bagel that was over toasted to the point where it felt like a hockey puck in my month. The salmon was so over salted that it was painful to eat. For an extra $5, we got a tiny cup of fruit that tasted like it came from a pre-mix and then sat in the fridge for days. It was not fresh. For our recent dinner, we got the chicken parm $27 which came out lukewarm, heavily over breaded and super salty. The pasta itself was over cooked. We also got a mushroom toast. The mushrooms were great but there were very few of them on there. It was basically bread drowned in a creamy cheese for $15. It's expensive but I don't mind the price if it's good. Here, it's expensive and not really edible (except for the mushroom toast). I hope they find quality staff to turn it back around I'm really disappointed that they can't find a chef to make their food like it once was. I used to love coming here. read more

A really trendy & beautiful brunch spot. The interior is incredible. The type of place you'd expect to find downtown. There's an outdoor patio. Best French pressed coffee I've ever had. I ordered the biscuits and gravy. The plate went back clean. I went with a party of seven and everyone enjoyed their breakfast. I'd love to try this spot for dinner. read more

The restaurant is small so it's very loud. They have a decent menu with many different options. We ordered lots of appetizers to get started. The mushroom toast was kinda soggy. The calamari was huge chunks and very chewy. The meatballs were the best one very flavorful. The specialty Mac and cheese with sausage and asparagus in a cream sauce was decent the pasta wasn't cooked as much as I would have liked. The salmon and other seafood dishes came in a bowl and was hard to cut the meat would prefer it on a plate. The waiter made sure we had everything we needed and was great answering all of our questions. Don't stay too long because the chairs are very uncomfortable but over all great service and an average meal. read more

Fantastic Italian restaurant right in the village of Hamburg. This place blew my expectations out of the water. Great atmosphere that was very inviting. The drinks were fun and creative, the mushroom toast was delicious and a great size for an appetizer, and the filet I ordered off of the specials menu was to die for. Even the bread they give to each table was great. To top all of that off, service was top notch. Our server, Michael, was incredible. 10/10 recommend. Will be back. read more

My boyfriend and I went here for a date night after Buffalo went back into the orange zone because we noticed outside seating a few days back. When we got there there were tables with fire pits next to them and also a greenhouse with space heaters inside. As it gets colder and snowy this obviously wouldn't work but overall it was a cute scene and great date night. We had wonderful service by a waiter named Evan. We both wanted a drink and a small meal, so we ordered the appetizers Meatballs, which are pork and veil, and Crab Cakes, which had the best mustard horseradish sauce with it. We also got the Riesling and EBC Blueberry Ale. Overall, and wonderful meal and date spot! read more

My husband and I made reservations on a Saturday night to go out for a date. We used the open table application and it worked great! We got to the Resturant and were behind some other guests who seemed to know the hostess so she was talking and chatting with them for a few minutes before she noticed we were even there. Anyways, she took our coats and seated us upstairs, which we enjoyed. I think she forgot to tell a server we had arrived because we then waited for nearly 15 minutes. There was a large party in the same room as us, as soon as I was going to get up to alert someone that we needed a server, a server had noticed us and took us under his wing. We really enjoyed the bread that was served with the meal and the French onion soup. The meal I ordered was just cheese, pepper and noodles, so I had shrimp added and it was $12 for 3 shrimp, which I thought was pretty steep. My husband loves his steak and the potatoes that came with it, which were made with horseradish. The server was actually really really good. He knew the menu very very well and served us perfectly and seemed like a real pro. I liked that. It's Father's Day, so we weren't sure how the food/service would be.... To our surprise, Carte Blanche was terrific! We were a party of four and all ordered different salad but the same entree Shrimp and Scallops Oh so delicious! Highly recommend! All salads were also delicious! Brunch review - 3 words: get there now! We had a fantastic brunch filled with amazing food, a great ambiance and a wonderfully attentive waitstaff. We ordered a pitcher of bloody Mary's and screwdrivers and I thought they were reasonably priced for the amount you receive. The orange juice was fresh squeezed, bonus! There were five of us and we all ordered the same two dishes - chicken and waffles and the seasonal omelet. I had some of both and was really impressed with the quality of the ingredients and the flavor of both dishes. The chicken had fluffy, lightly sweetened batter. The waffle was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Does it get any better? The seasonal omelet was stuffed with goat cheese and had a jam like topping of tomatoes, eggplant, and I think olives. It was fantastic. I would have ordered another one immediately if I wasn't stuffed. The breakfast potatoes on the side were even perfect. Finally, we had a side of bacon as a topper to our meal. The bacon is smoked in house and was honestly some of the best bacon I've ever had the pleasure of eating! It's a shame it took us this long to get here for brunch. We'll be back soon! read more

Made reservations on a Friday night through Open Table for dinner with my wife. It was 7 degrees when we parked our car in the municipal across the street and down a little from the entrance. We were seated promptly upstairs at a nice table near the window. Many of the Yelp reviews mentioned brunch, but several also included pasta and the mushroom toast, so those were on our minds. The mushroom toast was okay, but I wasn't drinking wine and felt that it needed to be paired with something other than water to stand up to the goat cheese. It definitely was filling and interesting, but not our favorite. She chose the Cacio de Pepe for her main course and I chose the Smoked Duck Carbonara. CACIO DE PEPE (fresh pasta, cracked pepper, parmesan) - Pleasant, earthy, peppery, and boring. Reminded us of peppery, weak Alfredo sauce. SMOKED DUCK CARBONARA (fresh pasta, farm egg yolk, seasonal vegetable). Smokey for sure, but again sort of boring. I think the duck didn't provide enough salt that's normally provided by the pancetta in a carbonara sauce. For dessert we ordered the creme brûlée and the chocolate cake with coffee for me. The creme brûlée and coffee (French press) were very good. The upstairs was very nice and the service was terrific. If we went back, we both agreed we'd try something different. At the end of the day, based on our experience, we'd be more inclined to go back for brunch than for dinner. read more

We had reservations tonight for 715 we got called and said that they were going to be ready until 745 because they are overbooked which I understand because of Covid and all the restrictions however we got there at a reservation time and still had to wait for a table until about 8 PM and when we were sad they were out of most of the specials and a large majority of the side parts to the entree (like no gnocchi) Being out of a lot of the menu items was frustrating because it limited the options to a much smaller amount BUT proves how fresh the food is/ limited quantities. So it's a catch 22. Our server was super nice and a ton of which was great he allowed a substitution for somebody is specific request and overall the service was great I just wish they had more of the menu available when we weren't considering we were pushed back an hour from our original time - not sure if that would have made the difference or not! We were so impressed with our first experience today! From being greeted at the door through our entire brunch we felt welcome and at home! I went to Carte Blanche for dinner with a friend a little over a month ago. I don't think they have a parking lot - we parked in some car shop lot across the street since it was after business hours. The exterior of the building was a bit odd, or maybe it's just because the "Carte Blanche" sign seemed uninviting. The interior was simple but again, felt uninviting with hard lines in all the furniture. We were greeted by the hostess upon entry and were brought up to the second floor to our table after a couple of minutes. There was no central AC, which meant they had portable units - one of which was blowing directly onto our table. Our server was friendly, although not very attentive despite having only one or two other tables to tend to. The bus boys did a lot of the refilling and delivering and they seemed very young and inexperienced - not that it is a bad thing, but I guess I just have higher expectations for supposedly higher-end restaurants. The bus boy delivered the free appetizer which were cherries stuffed with something. We could not hear whatever he muttered under his breath when they were delivered despite there were no other patrons at any of the tables surrounding us, and he hurried away before we could ask him what they were. They were good though - I enjoyed them. There was a mix-up with the popovers which I won't get into, but that is where the bus boys and our server lacked in communication. We also ordered the gem salad to share (peppercorn dressing, garlic crouton, parmesan, shaved egg yolk) - it's basically like a Caesar salad - it was fresh and had a good amount of dressing on it. For our entrees, i ordered the braised short rib (red wine braised beef, fresh pasta, mushroom cream) - I usually like my food on the lightly salted side, but this dish seemed a bit too light which made it flavorless. I actually had to add salt to it, which is something i pretty much NEVER do. The short rib was also a little tougher and more dry than what I'm used to in a "braised short rib" dish, as I order it every time I go to a French restaurant or any other restaurant that offers a dish with "braised short rib" in the description. I should mention though that the fresh pasta was good. My friend ordered the free range chicken (breast and thigh, Concord grape & bread salad, crispy skin) - I tried a couple of bites - it was just all right. My friend felt the same way. While I understand that this place may be very exciting for Hamburg/Buffalo, it is no comparison to any other French restaurant I have been to in NYC or California. Some may say that I should not be comparing Carte Blanche to the big fancy cities - but when my flavorless/tough/dry short rib dish from a Buffalo suburban "French" restaurant costs more than the amazingly delicious one i ordered in an authentic French restaurant in Napa Valley with a Michelin Star - there is definitely something VERY WRONG with that and I cannot help but make those comparisons. I will likely not return - with that said - I believe in second chances. I guess we will just have to see if it remains open long enough for me to return. read more

Outstanding service and delicious dining experience! House made popovers were warm and flaky served with two kinds of butter. The meatballs and sauce offered as a small plate were the best meatballs I've had in wny. They are soft, flavorful and decadent! The calamari were nicely spiced with a great side of red sauce. Dinners were excellent. We enjoyed the carbonara and the evening special of four jumbo shrimp over linguine in a lemon butter garlic caper sauce with just the right amount of red pepper flakes to give it some heat! It was my turn to pick for our monthly Brunch group. Not wanting to repeat one of our previous locals I went on a quest for something new and close to home. This place is a gem in the midst of a gem of a town. I made the reservation just in case using open table. I have never had much luck with that site but it worked no issues this time. We were take upstairs to a large table in a little alcove. It was as if we had our own little private room. Atmosphere was perfect with big farm house tables and chairs as well as wood branches hanging from the ceiling. It was modern and natural at the same time. Our server was superb and answered every question we threw at him. He clearly explained the special and made me want to order all of them. I settled on the chicken and waffle. It was tastey. The chicken had a little spice to it which cut the sweetness of the syrup perfectly. I also tasted the breakfast potatoes and eggs Benedict which were both very very good and the salted caramel French toast with vanilla bean cream was dynamite. The star here though was the toast for the table. It included a popover and rye toast for everyone and came with salted caramel, raspberry basil jam and butter all made in house. Sure $10 is a lot for toast but you will not be disappointed. All I can say is get out of the city and head to Hamburg. You will not regret it. read more

We used to enjoy this restaurant until a recent visit this past week-end, when we were told that a new chef had been hired. This restaurant needs more soy free options (we were offered exactly three items to choose from during a recent visit with our gift card!). Since we were with another couple and on a busy Saturday night no less, we could not easily pick up and leave. Despite what many vegans mistake as healthy, soy is being overused and many folks are becoming sensitive to it without realizing it. Soy is a top allergen, hormone altering ingredient (breast and other cancer patients are told to avoid it), and also fed to animals to make them (and the people who consume their meat) sick - (pork is the worst for soy & pig bellies are rashy and red on soy fed pig farms!). Even if someone does not have a life threatening allergy from soy (as is the case in our family), it is common sense that too much of ANYTHING will make you sick. Unfortunately, US farmers are growing soy - GMO no less! - in record numbers & as encouraged by its cheapness and by being subsidizing to do so. Remember: better quality foods are NOT soybean laden! read more

I must downgrade my previous review based on take out. These are strange times. My family and I are trying to support local businesses. Hubby and I have LOVED this restaurant in the past. Yesterday's order kind of soured me on the whole take out thing. The order placed - beet & asparagus appetizer, crab cake appetizer, 3 popovers, seafood cioppino , mushroom pasta and mac and cheese. I also ordered a field green salad which never arrived with the order. Hubby is the seafood eater and loved his choices. The pasta dishes were good. My beet appetizer was tasty yet weird. It came with a red beet puree, golden beets some greens, goat cheese and raw asparagus. No dressing of any sort. And as I do eat raw asparagus I feel that slightly blanched or charred asparagus would have been better suited to the overall dish. My opinion. The popovers - which I dream of - arrived as over baked husks. Nothing salvageable inside. Truly a waste of $6.00 ($2.00 a Pop). My primary issue is with the bill. I was charged $95.05 on my debit card. No receipt given. The actual cost of my items amounted to $76.00, not including tax. I ALWAYS tip. I told the person taking the order to add $15.00. Don't know what took place or how that total was determined or if I paid for the salad that I never got. I will save Carte Blanche for eat in only. read more

We had a wonderful dinner there, the staff was very attentive to our visit. The food was amazing, had pop overs for the table, and the meat and cheeseboard for starters. For our main course Scallop risotto, and Chicken Parmesan. Our cocktails were amazing. I had a traditional old-fashioned and the wife had a lemon drop martini which she said was excellent. Service was good and management did check on us and bought us a drink as the food took so long. We enjoyed the cheese plate. My hubby had the the seafood pasta--a bit spicy. Maybe we hit on an off night but we were unimpressed. Seating was uncomfortable. Food just so so at best. Caesar was dry and the requested anchovies were not anchovies but another canned fish, one lacking the brine of anchovies. Jambalaya had 3 shrimp with the sausage and they were overcooked to the point of being a rubbery circle. Strip steak was poorly aged and had a gamey taste to it. Mashed were good broccolini was good but stems were a bit larger than usual. Don't like having to ask for salt and pepper to accommodate our taste. Doesn't matter if the chef thinks food is wonderfully seasoned. I want salt and pepper available at the table. My husband asked for Tanqueray gin in his drink. He was served another brand without explanation. We didn't want to sit in these chairs any longer than needed so we ate and left. Feel bad for those who bought our gift card planning for us to have an enjoyable meal. On the upside, dogs enjoyed the steak. With so many other restaurants to choose from we won't be back. read more

As you can see from my reviews, this is one of my favorite restaurants. Just got curbside pickup- my guys liked their dinners- Buffalo Mac and Cheese and Bolognese. I love the chicken Parmesan here- always fresh and homemade. Sadly, I didn't like this one at all- was ice cold (I came 5 min early), and just not tasty- seemed overcooked. They are very nice here and the food is usually excellent - I still appreciate that I didn't have to cook and I'm sure someone will eat the parm tomorrow. Carte Blanche! Shout out Gordon Ramsey shout out Guy Fieri they have nothing on this menu! One of the few places in Buffalo offering fresh ingredients daily and a menu thats always exciting and changing. Today I had a romaine caesar salad to start (top 6 caesar in buffalo!) with the lamb chop lollipops special. WOW. Fresh tomato garnish, with tzatziki and pesto made in-house ($23 total?? Talk about VALUE). If your in hamburg it doesnt get any better than this. If youre in the northtowns get your greyhound ticket and hop on the bus down to F L A V O R TO W N. Great atmosphere, quiet elegant mood downstairs perfect for a date your old lady, or take it up stairs with friends or coworkers for a more lively feel. Lindsey and Jerry were upstairs behind the bar keeping things alive and had extensive knowledge of the menu items and cocktails offered. One of the best restaurants in Buffalo no questions asked. Service and food were quick. Really enjoyed the mushroom toast and the shrimp and grits were out of this world. The omelette was pretty basic - great flavor but I was hoping for something more fluffy. I really enjoyed the hashbrowns on the side though. My mom also said the coffee was great. Gosh, this place is a dream! We came in during a week night without a reservation and was seated immediately. I can see how they could get busy and how a reservation is suggested. The decor of this place is gorgeous! Very minimal and elegant. The menu is small but has something to offer every pallet. We ordered a dozen oysters and the mushroom toast to start with, which was out of this world! For my entree, I ordered the steak which came out perfectly. The drinks were strong and mighty! I've heard great things about the brunch and am looking forward to giving it a try! read more

Sunday brunch club hit the Southtowns and I am glad we did! This was such a pleasant experience start to finish. The building is really nice multiple levels, patios and bars. Very nice decor. We were seated upstairs greeted promptly and started asking questions about the menu, drinks and brunch items. All of our questions were answered enthusiastically. We all settled on the cocktail Parisian Sunrise. Light and refreshing. We ordered the bread basket for the table because- popovers! It also Included sourdough and rye toast with a butter, rasberry jam and salted caramel spread. I can see nyself visiting again and ordering just that basket. Mmm popovers with some french press coffee! Our server's glowing description of the eggs benedict with filet minion swayed me from my original choice of chicken and waffles. I am so glad. Fantastic!! Also at the table we had the aforementioned chicken and waffles and cornbeef hash. Each dish was fantastic, we all shared and all agreed we were hard pressed to pick a favorite. We went there with my daughter who was the one who suggested it. She was sooooo looking forward to prime rib summer special and wanted to go there for that specific reason. My husband and I got there prior to my daughter and were promptly seated and poured some water. Water was lukewarm so we requested ice from our server. Our daughter came in and sat down. Waiter had eventually came over to get her drink order after about 10 mins. This was all happening about 7:15 pm so not too late. Waiter comes to take our order. He telss us immediately that they have run out of the prime rib special and there was no substitution. I went to place my duck salad order and were told they were out of duck. Okay strike three. Put in different order and ordered the pan seared scallops(not enough sear for my taste). Finished our meal and ordered a French press coffee - again it was lukewarm as was my husband's tea water. We had a nice meal here. The service was formal, quick, and friendly enough. Before the meal they gave us popovers and butter. I'm not a huge fan of popovers but that's a personal preference, they were fresh, soft, and tasted like they typically do, a nice complementary touch. For an appetizer we got the dip trio which had a really garlicky hummus, a chicken wing dip and a crab dip. All of them were tasty, the crab dip was our favorite. My husband had the shrimp and scallops over risotto and I had coq au vin over gnocchi. Both were well executed and yummy. The vin's sauce was the classic version of it. Perhaps I'm being too picky but we both agreed 4 stars because although the food and service were good we didn't find ourselves particularly wowed by anything or that anything felt very unique or like something we haven't had somewhere else. It was the best I may have ever had, although my friend commented that hers seemed peppery, mine was perfect :) We split the jumbo scallops in a chilled corn soup that was wonderful! I could have gone without the sea salt on top, but it was delicious! We also split the caprese salad, which was so flavorful. We each opted for the short rib pasta dish and it was absolutely amazing! When I visit my hometown, I like to take my mom to dinner - her choice. So glad she chose this place. Easily handicapped accessible which is important for my mom. The bright dining space boasts clean lines and decently comfortable seating. I love good gnocchi and my niece was betting that I would choose that (I will next time) but the eggplant dish sounded great and this was affirmed both by the server and by the savory mouthful. Others enjoyed traditional pasta dishes with not a complaint that I heard. The full bar includes beer on tap, creative cocktails and a decent wine list. This was just as incredible as people told us! Started with a drink at the bar with the nicest waiter ever. We sat on the upstairs outdoor seating - super cute for a nice night - and had the Mushroom Toast (INCREDIBLE!), and a Caesar Salad. Then my husband had the chicken parm, which was the biggest chicken cutlet I've ever seen! He has a huge appetite, so he loved that it wasn't small. My new favorite brunch place and I didn't have to venture into the city to find it. This restaurant has a very vintage, upscale farmhouse vibe with helpful and knowledgeable staff to go with it. I've been there on several occasions but my two favorite dishes I like to alternative with are the Salted Caramel French Toast and the Salmon Eggs Benedict. OH MY is all I can say! Both had amazing flavors, good portioned meals and just plan delicious. Both dishes go very well with their fresh squeezed mimosas. (because brunch without bubbles is just breakfast). Whether you're in the Southtowns, City or Northtowns I highly recommend you taking a trip to Hamburg to visit this new staple. I swear the meals will make it worth while. read more
