My friend comes here a lot, hes a tinkerer. Ive been here several times, and the staff is always a big help. Well, today they went over the line, and i had to review them. In check-out, i commented that the balsa wood airplanes, reminded me of being a kid. My friend and I chuckled about it, and what not, and the little old lady gave me one! I have been shopping at this store for years. It is convenient and I like the small size and vibe. Last week I walked in and the man at the register wasn't wearing a mask. He was wearing a shield. You can't wear a shield without a mask. I started to say this to him and he abruptly stood up and walked toward the back and someone else came to take his place at the register. When I was leaving I saw the man with the shield go back to the register. When I got home, I told my husband what happened. He asked me to describe the man with the shield. Carter bro's Ace is the place. I'm here multiple times a week with various projects I'm dealing with in property maintenance. 95% of the time they have what I need, especially with oddball parts, fittings, and fasteners. All the employee's here are great, and I always feel welcome coming into the store. One particular employee, Mo, has been extremely helpful over the years. He has been very knowledgeable about many things, and quite personable. Being a "regular" at this store has provide many perks as well, including being lent a specialty tool every now and then for some strange project I'm battling in a 80-100 year old home. I can't recommend this place enough, especially if you are close by. Locally owned and operated, I feel better spending my dollar here then at any of the big box stores. There are a couple things you will still probably need to grab elsewhere (lumber, larger construction materials, tile, etc...), but for the everyday repair, project or tool. I really liked Ace hardware. It had this adorable small town feeling and gorgeous hardwood floors. They also, quite unexpectedly, had all the cleaning supplies we were looking for. There's nothing better than a local hardware store and this one does not disappoint. Ace Hardware's long-time slogan The helpful hardware place has been replaced by The helpful place. Another change came in 1989, when its longtime jingle--"Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man"--was modified, replacing "man" with the more accurate "Store". Carter Bros Ace Hardware lives up to the slogan. Good thing "man" was replaced with "store" as the women who work at this ACE are friendly and extremely knowledgeable! Whether I'm working on a craft or attempting to repair something in my home; this is my first stop. I'm not very handy and I gave up a lot of my power tools (ok they were mostly my dad's power tools) so all my DYI projects require a little bit of MacGyvering. The staff at ACE never laughs or judges they just point me in the right direction. At times they offer other solutions. A few times, they didn't carry what I needed so they recommended other stores in town that might carry it. The good: They are a local shop in Midtown Reno! Knowledge & friendly staff Pickles....yes you can purchase craft made pickles! Two store fronts/two floors of DYI happiness! The not so good: I might need to breakdown and buy some power tools; but at least I know where to go. They might be a little spendy compared to a big box store but it is worth a little extra to have someone knowledgeable help you get the right product to get the job done. Not sure what my next project will be but I'm sure I will need to stop in to ACE! read more

I second what all the 5-star reviews have already said. I didn't realize I wasn't alone in the longing for an old-school hardware store. Lowe's or Home Depot pale in comparison to this place. The employees here are not only nice, but very knowledgable about their products (the High school kid at Lowes didn't know the difference between a hex cap scre and a phillips)... and I have yet to hear they do not carry I need. When I first walked in the door you can't help but see this huge fan right in front. I thought to myself "whoa, that's a big ass fan"... upon further inspection I noticed that it was made by the Big Ass Fan Company. read more

Every time I go here, I say to myself, that I need to write a review. This place is the bomb, shop here once, and you'll want to throw rocks at Home Depot and Lowe's!! The employees in those stores don't know their a** from a hole in the ground! I usually need something as common as a metric screw for my guitar amps, that would take an hour to find at the big box. Here, they not only know what you need, they personally take you to it. Thank God this place exists. I even go there for easy stuff like black duct tape, and gladly pay a little more to keep from patronizing the 800 pound gorilla stores. read more

I have been in this building several times over the years when it was an antique store so knew the place have volume. But what ACE did with the place makes it feel so much larger; I love the open ceiling and wood floors. I am very pleased they retained or even enhanced the feeling of the building. This is my first visit since it was turned in to an ACE Hardware as we have not been to Reno until recently for about six years. But as much like the Ace store near our home in Arizona one is never lacking for very friendly helpful attentive service. Yeah we will be back, many times over I am sure. read more

I feel like an evangelist about this place, but I have been telling everybody I know to SHOP HERE! I stopped in here for the first time last month because Lowe's couldn't make the key I needed. If you haven't been in here before, you need to check it out. What looks like a small store from the front is actually a large main floor with a basement full of inventory as well. And the customer service...Jeez Louise, I didn't know service like this still existed anywhere! You can't make it three steps in the door without somebody offering to help you out. The inventory is incredible, and I have found several things here that they did not have at Lowe's or Home Depot. Seriously. Next time you are thinking about heading to one of the home-improvement warehouses, go here instead and thank me later. read more

I had always wanted to pop in this store. It just looks amazing from the outside, like they would have everything. I finally had an excuse as I needed to get a key made and find some picture hanging bracket-y things. If I had, had the time I would have spent hours in here! It is so much bigger on the inside AND it has a basement. Immediately I was asked if I needed assistance and the gentleman knew exactly what I was talking about by my description of "picture hanging bracket-y things", sent me over to them while making my key and wham bam I was in and out of there in under 5 minutes. This girl is impressed. OH! For being located right smack in MidTown the prices were far more reasonable than I expected. This place is a total WIN! read more

This place is deceiving upon first walking in. The store looks pretty small and cramped but once you realize there is a basement area you realize this place has a ton to offer. Prices are a bit higher than your big box stores but the service was helpful and friendly.This place lives up to its name for Hardware as they had a huge selection of nuts, bolts, etc. Unfortunately, they didn't have 3 brushed nickel handrail brackets in stock, so I was forced to make another stop. They had plenty of the other finishes in stock, likely because that is the most popular finish, As I walked through I noticed they also mix paint, so this really is a full service home/hardware store. read more

Best "hometown" hardware store around. Very friendly, knowledgeable staff, and for such a small shop they have a shockingly-good inventory of hard-to-find tools & parts. On more than one occasion I've found what I needed at Carter Brothers when Home Depot, etc., failed me. Their prices on some items are a little higher than big box stores, but not by much. in this busy day and age of the large box stores it sometimes refreshing to know that courtesy, service, and a pleasant attitude are still alive and well in our smaller businesses occupying Mid Town. So It turned out the bolt that held my hi-way foot pegs on had stripped out and allowed the peg to fall off. I figured if I could get a larger bolt I could force it in their and at least repair it for the day. So I stopped at Carter Brothers Ace Hardware, having been to this particular Ace Hardware before, I knew they had a terrific selection of just about every nut or bolt you would ever need to fix a motorcycle. when I went into the store I met a young man by the name of Joe Strickland, I explained to him the problem that I had and that I was looking to find something that would repair the foot peg. Well this industrious young man seemed to really understand my problem and went about actually repairing my foot peg for me. I'm not exactly sure what he did, but I know that the end product was only a $.98 bolt that I had to pay for, and that was it. I told Joe, after he had put some time into this task, that I wanted to pay him for his help, simply because if I had to have taken this problem to a motorcycle repair shop, well I don't even want to think about what it might've cost, to Joe's credit he flatly refused. So I told him that I was going to put a very good review up and mention him directly as one very courteous young man who helped an older veteran senior fix his motorcycle. It's encouraging to know that service is still something that's offered today. Personal service, like this, is hard to come by. Hats off to Joe for his help. read more

I came in twice in the last two weeks and both times the employees deserve a shout out for excellent customer service. The first time I was looking for bungee cords and a couple of other items. The man at the counter sent another employee downstairs for the bungee cords and told me exactly where to find the other items. I asked about some things that I will be wanting once the summer gets here. He told me that if they did not carry them that they could order them for me. The second time I went back in because the bungee cords did not work like I thought that they would and wanted to get something else. I was looking for a way to secure the basket that hooks to my walker so that it does not fall off so easily. The lady at the counter helped me figure out something that might work. Then she took the time to secure it to my walker! So far it seems to be working. I thank her for taking the time to help me. They seem to have a good selection and are willing to take the time to help you get what you are looking for. I am very glad that this awesome hardware store is in my neighborhood! read more

This store has a great fastener selection, but you'll need to find specific items on your own. The young staff there are mostly useless as they have no idea what your talking about when you ask where the "thread repair inserts" are; or any other item that is not just a simple bolt or screw. Also, and perhaps more important, I would advise NOT buying any of the Stihl power tools they sell. I purchased a rather expensive leaf vacuum/shredder there and when I got it home I was disappointed to find the shoulder strap was not included. I drove all the way back to the store and the cashier told me to "take it up with Stihl", as they had no idea where the strap was. I had just spent $300 at this place and they wouldn't make an effort to make sure I got all the accessories. In the future, I will purchase Stihl power products from one of the other dealers in town. Whereas before I made an effort to shop here frequently to help out a local business, I now only rarely visit this store; only when I need a specific type of fastener that can't be found at Lowe's or Home Depot. And I expect the poor customer service I usually receive. read more

I will no longer be doing business at this store, I will no longer recommend this store, I will actively tell people to not shop here, and I will be pulling my companies business from any Ace Hardware going forward. The manager at this store needs to contact his POS provider and learn how their terminals work. We have gotten use to the defective chip on our credit card and are accustomed to failing the chip three times to get promoted for a swipe; including at this store, multiple times previously. This time, prior to putting the card in a third time for failure, the manager took my partners card out of her hands without asking, fiddled with the terminal, and then told us it just wouldn't work. When we stated it's worked before and we knew what to do he basically told us we were lying and that he was the manager and knew better. Unfortunately he needs to check with Ingenico to learn he is wrong, or even check with any of the other employees there that have rang us up in the past to find out he was wrong. Tyler, the young gentleman that helped me, did not not disappoint. I showed him a knife that was missing a small screw and he took me directly to the one I needed. It was too long, so he tried a different color (not black), which were the color of my screws. It fit!! It didn't match as it was a silver screw. He even went up to the register and screwed it in for me. Great help all around and 22 cents to boot. Nice service, great price. This store is great! read more

ACE inadvertently send an order for 4 bottles of carpet cleaner to Carter Bros ACE downtown, instead of my favorite and normal ACE, on Baring in Sparks, much closer to where I live. I arrived at the store to pick it up only to learn that they had sold one of my paid-for bottles to another customer, so my drive across town was an exercise in frustration at this point. I described the whole deal as a cluster****, at which point the man--a middle-aged dark-haired fellow who said he owned the store, actually kicked me out. He was the only one who heard me say it, but apparently I was in church, not a hardware store that had just screwed up my online order. You screw up my order, you are going to hear about it. If the truth, in living color, offends you, then maybe get your shop in order and put as much energy into that as you did on your ridiculous curse patrol. read more

I really want to love this place and there are things about it that I do really like. I want to support this local business but I really wanted a friendly, hometown feeling when I went in. There was a woman with grey curly hair at the front counter who was not very friendly or helpful. I felt pretty much dissed by her. The young man downstairs who helped me with halogen light bulbs was great and I will give it another try because of him. He really gave me a great tip about the installation of the bulbs. The light bulbs were $2.03 each more than I can get them at Lowes but I don't mind if I'm supporting a local Reno business. For that additional cost I do expect exceptional customer service, however. read more

They don't have every single thing a big box store has - for obvious reasons, but you never have to worry about walking around a huge store for 5-10 minutes trying to find someone to help you. I needed a fine saw blade and some adhesive for a home project. I was able to find both, with the sales staffs help, and be in and out in under five minutes. Ace stores are usually only found in small rural towns, since larger hardware store chains usually don't move into those markets and undersell them. In Reno, there is one Ace close to downtown and if you blink you will pass the building without knowing that it is there. This location packs a lot of selection into this tiny location, thanks to the large basement. It is great for the local homeowners in the surrounding area, since it means they don't have to travel far to enter the gaping maw of a Home Depot, or Lowes. For small projects and that sundry list of items that you've been collecting on your hardware shopping list, give this place a try. Their prices are decent as well. awesome place! reminds my of the real hardware stores of my youth. The floors are wood and creak when you walk. There's a basement with every nut or bolt imaginable. The staff knows what they are doing, and if they dont know something they find out. Prices are on par with the big box stores, but there's no 20 minute hike down miles of aisles.
