I have had multiple jobs for the hardwood floor angela that comprise Carter Wood Floors and each time I have been utterly thrilled with the magic they do on my floors! I have a 1947 traditional midcentury ranch, and I'm super particular with the color I like my floors to be. I hired them to install hardwood floors in my kitchen, laundry room, and powder room - which had previously been linoleum - to match my original hardwood floors that are throughout the rest of my house. The result is gorgeous. Everyone tried to warn me that I was being foolhardy to install wood, which can warp, in my kitchen... but I knew that the warmth and richness of the hardwood kitchen floors would be well worth the irritation of a little warping and I was right ;)!! It looks gorgeous. We then recently added on an en-suite bathroom to my son's bedroom and needed to cut in a new wood threshold leading into the new bathroom, in addition to replacing new boards in the walk-in closet, and all the new pieces are beautifully and seamlessly incorporated into our existing 1947 hardwood floors. And then the stain color!! Beyond gorgeous!! They had no easy task of matching exactly the existing hallway wood stain color, so in order to do that, I had Genaro (the color specialist) mix up a custom blend of stains to match the floors throughout the house. It's perfection. He showed me four little patches of different mixtures for me to choose which custom color blend matched the rest of the house the best and he and I decided on one. Then we chose a super-clean and elegant-looking super-matte finishing varnish that is so gorgeous that I am now dying to sand, stain, and varnish the rest of the house with that same super-matte varnish!! This color is warm and traditional and so elegant. I also had them stain the window-seat in my son's bedroom to match the floors exactly. I will include some photos. I'm so grateful to all of the artists within Carter Wood Floors who work so hard at their craft to create gorgeous floors with pride of workmanship. You only need to have a little patience sometimes with getting ahold of Kevin, the owner, because when they're busy, they're busy... but they're so good that I'm willing to wait a little. I had been looking for an affordable business to stain and finish my living room and hallway. I had just painted the house and removed a floor heater. I didn't need the entire house done. Just living room and hallway. I left a message for Carter hardwood and Kevin called me right back. He came and gave me an estimate and out of all the estimates I received Carter was the most affordable. Also very professional gave me a duplicate of the estimate. The others kept on trying to convince me to do the entire house because they said it wasn't going to look good. Carter kept in touch with me and after he gave me the estimate I thought he wouldn't call because the job was so small. He called and set up a day to come by. His workers are efficient and started at around 7:30am and finished at 10:30am the 1st day. The 2nd day was 1 hour tops. I was very satisfied. He does 2 coats and if you want extra coats he charges a little more. I didn't opt for the extra coat bc I do t have a lot of traffic I. Our hardwood floor was installed over 10 years ago. The kitchen area suffered from many "dings" - mostly from us dropping heavy items and a stool used by a housekeeper to clean the kitchen cabinets. Our original plan was to replace the floor, but that proved to be a complicated task as the wood floor was installed before the cabinets, and we had pending scheduled carpet installation. Kevin responded quickly and organized his crew on very sort notice. The crew (led by Ramiro) arrived and completed the sanding work on time as did his colleagues who applied the finishing coatings. I hired Carter Wood Floors based on a recommendation from a local real estate agent that listed my house. Kevin and his team showed up promptly and worked well with other contractors. His guys are hard workers and completed their work in a timely manner. The original project scope was to re-surface and re-finish: the Living Room, repair the older heater cut-outs with hardwood in the hallway and the two bedrooms in the older area of the house. The Carter team was willing to take on more work than originally bid. We decided to remove Carpet and Sub-floor in two additional rooms and install new hardwood there as well. Called on Thursday, talked to Kevin, a gentleman named Bill came out that day, gave me a very reasonable quote, in writing, which included the $ amount, it would be for each addition coat of varnish? They came on Monday, and started the job! I was called each morning, or told the day before, when they would be coming back. My floors are beautiful but that is only due to Kevin's amazing workers. As for Kevin...where do I start? He is curt and rude at best and he is horrible about returning calls or keeping communication open. The work went great until the very end when they neglected do anything to the threshold at the front door and didn't put a transition in between the kitchen and dining room. I asked them to take care of that and they slapped in this big thick piece of wood that is glued together because they must have cut it too short, it's crooked and it's some weird color that matches nothing! Then I saw tennis shoe footprints in the entry way from shoes that do not belong to me. Only way that could have happened is that one of their guys stepped on it too soon. I mentioned all these things to Kevin and after a few weeks he showed up at my door with a bill when I had already paid for the floors in full and only owed for the bathroom flooring they had done. After he had given me a price in total, I paid it and he tried marking it up another $350 by reworking the original paperwork. It was very shady and I felt very uncomfortable with him. I had to have my father call and get him to back off and I never got my issues resolved. I agreed to make a last payment to get him to go away!! My husband and I are extremely pleased with Carter Wood Flooring. Kevin gave me an estimate after two companies told me that they could not refinish our floors bc they were too thin. Kevin was honest and transparent, and gave me a detailed understanding of our floors. There were boards that had screw holes in them, and he worked with us to keep as many boards as possible rather than try to replace everything. Kevin finally came out to my house to quote me after making it pretty hard to get a hold of him and schedule that visit. He left his card but no estimate after taking measurements and discussing the job, saying he had to look up the pricing on my flooring. Fine. Well that was over a month ago. He never responded with any sort of follow up. I would call for the estimate and he would say he still has to find and quote the flooring. Fine. Things APPEARED promising-- Owner gave me the requested quote and I chose him and his business, Carter Wood Floors, as they'd been in business for so long, even though I had a lesser quote with another also-experienced floor refinisher. In other words, I hired THIS owner, THIS company... Coordinated with Kevin AND my tenants [they had to be gone from the house for five days during the work]. All systems go, or so it seemed... I show up for the job on the appointed day, as does some guy who doesn't appear to even work for Carter Wood Floors! What tipped me off was his truck, and when I queried the fellow, he admitted that he knows Kevin and used to work with him decades ago and wasn't supposed to tell me. I immediately called Kevin because I had purposely hired HIS company and didn't appreciate his sub-contracting my job out--bringing in some guy he used to work with back in the day. Kevin told me I could send him away--but that all his other guys were on other jobs. Believe me, I wanted to, but as my tenants had gone on a five-day trip JUST to get the floors redone, I was stuck and had to proceed. In the end, the floor was not adequately finished--not adequately protected. Kevin started telling me I had to pay for more layers of finish, then, adding to the cost of the job--which I did. However, these additional coats made no difference and there were still spaces between my wood parquet that weren't sealed enough with the finish. He proceeds to tell me that in HIS house he'd done 9 or more coats or some such thing! And that I could "just" have them recoated when these tenants left in a year or two--at my expense, of course. I had my floors for 40 years prior with a tremendous finish--and this guy's telling me to get them finished again every other year??? To make matters worse, I stupidly paid him the agreed to amount-- with his promise to make sure the floors were finished properly--any gaps filled in. He came in, took a glance, said they'd be "fine," and called me "ridiculous" in front of my tenants and husband, and left. Here we are, one year later, and my tenant just called me out to see how the wood is splintering, even with special care. Not enough of a protective coating. read more

Kevin and his crew brought back to life the original hardwood floors in a 1925 craftsman home. They left the house looking amazing.

I reach out to Carter Wood Floors to give me an estimate to repair two small areas of water damage. They came and quoted $900 for the work as we already have the flooring required to do the repair. This seemed fair so I said I'd like to go ahead and schedule the work to be done. I have called and texted over 5 times, each time being told they'll look at the schedule and call me back. If you can't be bothered with such a small job (which I totally understand) do me the curtesy of just saying so. Absolutely terrible customer service! read more

This review is fairly difficult to write because elements of the job were excellent; while others - mainly the owners - were not. I'll explain what we had done: 1950's ranch style house with pre-existing wood flooring in majority of the home. Previous "flippers" had removed approximately 40% of original flooring and replaced with very thick cherry plank. We had previously refinished the original flooring 12+ years ago and wanted to remove cherry and then replace with matching 1 1/2" oak flooring and refinish the whole house. When first contacting Carter's, their response was prompt and thorough. Jim arrived at our house and gave us a bid for adding the new flooring and refinishing the whole house. The bid was broken down by labor and materials in a clear way. He explained additional pricing options for extra layers of clear coat and staining options in a clear manner. After we agreed to do the work, the flooring was delivered and installed in one day. We then waited 11 days before sanding and finishing (per company guidelines, which were previously explained.). Once the physical labor of installation and refinishing began we never heard from Jim nor Kevin (owner). Despite questions along the way, and phone calls, we heard nothing until we mentioned we would hold final payment During each step we had concerns and questions and - especially the day of installation - the men doing the work had extremely limited English skills. There were several pieces of flooring that had to be glued in place due to kitchen cabinet layout and having to trim down full planks to smaller pieces. The glue did not set on these and the pieces were loose. We tried to communicate this to the workers and we got blank stares. Additionally, two pieces were laid unevenly and dipped far beneath the other pieces and these could not be addressed either. We had been informed that if any pieces of our existing flooring needed to be replaced, it would be $10/board. Acceptable price for material and labor. HOWEVER, when we knew that pieces near our entry threshold would need replacing, we could not convey this to the crew. We called and left THREE messages with Jim and the main office line with no response. Our concern stemmed from the fact that it was made extremely clear that the new wood had to acclimate to our house for a bare minimum of 10 days. Should these random, replaced new boards need to do the same? Especially if being melded with 60+ year old original boards? This concern was expressed during our messages. Finally we got a call back - with an annoyed tone - that these boards would be replaced during the sanding process. That's fine, but then they would be immediately sanded, stained and refinished. Why was it okay for these to ignore the 10-day acclimation period? The day of sanding, the job foreman - Carlos - was extremely knowledgeable. He communicated with us what he was doing and when/why. The problem was that we didn't get to fully inspect the sanding job before stain went on. There were some patches in the house that needed definite attention - and we were told they would by Carlos (he explained how he could "feather" the dips and dings to some degree. These problem spots were caused when the floor was refinished 12 years ago.). The problem was, that when he evened out these spots, some boards should have been replaced because nailheads showed through. But these issues weren't pointed out and we were not given this option. There was just one living space in the house that was not being refinished - our 1 guest bedroom. We asked early on if we should vacate the house or if we could stay in this one bedroom. We were given a flaccid "okay" to stay in the house. The day Carlos sanded and stained the floor, I asked him just to make sure what Jim had told us was accurate. Carlos paused for a few moments and really contemplated his answer. He said yes we could stay, but with hesitation. He said he would do his best to tape off the hallway space to keep the fumes from coming in. This gave me pause as my wife was - at that time - 8 months pregnant (a fact not at all hidden when she met with Jim for the bid/consultation). Upon telling Carlos this, he emphatically stated that no, we should not be in the house. Why wasn't this information conveyed during any of the other steps in the process so we could make timely arrangements? It took a LOT of phone calls to get any response. When Carter's finally sent a representative it wasn't someone who spoke much English. The only reason they helped us is because we withheld final payment. We never got the 3rd transition piece. They scratched our brand new kitchen base cabinets. Once they got the job, Kevin and Jim treated it as an annoyance. Their sanding and clear coat foremen were great and easy to work with - kind and knowledgeable. This review is long overdue. My wooden floors haven't been touched since my home was built in the 50's. I was referred to Carter Wood Floors by a friend and I was surprised how reasonable their prices were. They replaced boards where an old floor heater was and a few other boards that were damaged. You couldn't even tell they were replaced because it blended in so beautifully. I was so pleased and happy with the end results. I only use the Bona cleaner product and that has kept them beautiful. Amazing work! We recently purchased a 1950s home with beat-up white oak flooring in most of the house, and Carter was highly recommended to us by our landlord who flips older properties. Kevin quoted us a competitive price to have the floors refinished with extra coatings, plus redoing the previous owner's sloppy heater hole repair. One of the worst experiences I have ever had in home repair/upgrades. They were deceiving in their write up of the offer, were frustrated when I asked them to do what they originally told me they would do and then they wanted to add money when it was 1/2 done. So what am I supposed to do when my floors are half done? Also, they show up whenever they want to show up, so don't plan your schedule around when they tell you they will be there. They are super nice on the first meeting, and then watch out! The workers tracked in mud on their shoes and made a mess for me to clean up. Beer cans in my backyard, dirt/mud in the house. Had our master bedroom carpet pulled up by Carter Wood Floors, and had the wood floor underneath sanded & varnished. This business was good to work with. Owner, Kevin, returned my calls. The workers were well informed about the project when they arrived, and they even took photos of how our bed came apart and would be reassembled. They were there when they said they'd be there. FYI, getting the floors sanded makes a lot of dust! The workers taped up plastic sheeting, to corral the dust. The smell of the varnish has persisted, even now, three weeks later.
