What used to be a decent store has now turned into an unprofessional, poorly managed mess. Let me start with the customer service -- or lack of it. I walked in to return a shirt (tags on, never worn, with the receipt), and the staff acted like I was asking for a kidney. No greeting, no offer to help -- just a bunch of employees standing around talking to each other, looking annoyed that a customer dared to interrupt them. When I finally got someone's attention, she looked at the shirt for two seconds and flat-out said, "We're not taking this back." No reason, no explanation, just a rude tone and attitude. I asked why, and she just shrugged and mumbled something about "policy," then walked away in the middle of me talking. Walked away. I couldn't believe it. Then another guy came over, and instead of helping, he treated me like I was being dramatic for just asking for a reason. Super rude, totally unprofessional, and had a tone like he couldn't care less. I asked to speak to a manager, and of course -- surprise -- "She's not available." I waited 30 minutes, and guess what? Still "not available." They either lied or just didn't care. The store itself was a wreck. Clothes everywhere, nothing organized, fitting rooms piled with random stuff -- it looked like no one there actually worked. The employees were just wandering around or hanging out like it was their living room. Honestly, I walked in expecting a normal shopping trip and left completely disgusted. It's not just that they wouldn't return the shirt -- it's how I was treated like trash for even asking. The people working there couldn't be bothered to even pretend to care. JCPenney used to be reliable, but after this, I'm done. Forever. I don't care how big the sale is -- I'd rather pay full price somewhere else and be treated like a human being. You'll get better service at literally any other store. Hell, I've had more respectful interactions at the DMV. Bottom line: Don't waste your time. JCPenney is a disaster.

My husband and kids got me several maternity dresses from Kohls for Mother's Day 2025. Because I…read moream eleventy-million weeks pregnant, the dresses were all about a size too small to accommodate my growing belly--so I took all three dresses back to Kohls just a couple of days later in hopes to exchange them for store credit so that I could size up. As they were a gift, I did not have the card that was used to purchase the items, nor did I have a receipt. I figured it would be ok because the dresses still had all their tags on, they were purchased mere days prior, clearly had never been worn, and I was simply requesting store credit (not cash or anything). So, I hauled my giant, tired, pregnant self over to Kohls with my toddler in tow just to exchange these damn dresses. I was asked to give a phone number, email, and my state-issued drivers license. I freely gave this information. Then, the woman working there told me that without a receipt, they could only issue half-store credit. So, if I wanted to return the dresses, valued at around $100 for all three, for store credit, I would only get $50 store credit. Engage internal Karen mode. I ended up calmly and quietly just saying, " ok, I'll go home and find the receipt and bring them back for a full refund"...which I fully intend to do, this evening. And then, instead of keeping my money within that same store via store credit/exchange as I initially intended, I will walk out, spend the entire amount elsewhere, and probably never go to Kohl's again, as the vibe, price point, and shockingly worsening customer service leave so much to be desired. I understand that there could be a situation in which someone steals clothing, leaves the tags on, and then tries to return the items for cash....that probably happens all the time. I am sure this policy is an attempt to address that. However, it seems misapplied and misguided to use this policy against someone who is trying to exchange recently purchased, brand new, items for store credit. (Especially when the customer doing so gladly presents their government-issued photo ID and it is a couple of days after a national gift-giving holiday) Now though, I have to go through the hassle of going to Kohls all over again, taking another hour out of my day, in order to rectify something that should already have been fixed in like 5 minutes. And now, instead of just keeping my money within the store, I am taking it all elsewhere. Seems like a really stupid policy. I get that we live in a low-trust society, where theft is rampant. Despite this, I still don't have to patronize businesses that default treat all their customers with suspicion. For years, the selection and prices at Kohls had been mid, at best. The main reason to go to Kohls was always that they had great customer service and a stellar return policy. If that's no longer the case, and it seems to be, then I have no reason to go. Also, Kohls cash is now excluded for any sort of "premium" brands that they carry (Nike, Sephora, etc) so that sucks too. I see Kohls going the way of Sears...once they piss off the Midwestern moms and grandmas, their core clientele, the end is near.

The most radical difference is Athleta's super generous return policy. I would say that Athleta is also a little more casual wear oriented than Lululemon. Like Lululemon, they offer free pant alterations, weekend free exercise classes, and always a lot of new styles of tops and leggings. The store's inventory is much smaller than online, but if you use the computer inside the store, you can order whatever you like with free ship. The back of the store does offer a couch for tired shoppers, as well as a lot of free class cards at local gyms. Athleta is superior to Lululemon for me. Sometimes you just gotta return stuff.

At any time there will be 4-5 people working in the store--and not doing anything--and they will just ignore customers. It's difficult to get help with anything and if you do have a question or need help, the staff makes you feel like you're inconveniencing them. The staff was friendly and helpful. I visited on opening day and so I think they had a lot of staff on duty. The store was a little under supplied in some areas. I'm guessing that is because they just opened. I was happy with the brands etc...that they had on hand. The one big downside of Ross is that they will not let you take your cart to the parking lot. I bought a large dog bed and some smaller items. They put my smaller items in a bag and then the dog bed in the cart. When I got to the door I was stopped and told I had to leave my cart. So here I am trying to manage my bags, my handbag and this huge oversize dog bed. A customer walking out with me commented on how bad it was to expect customers to not need a cart. What if I had not been able to handle my purchases without a cart? I guess I could pull my car up, but if that is the expectation then I would think that would be a problem for them during heavy shopping times. I would definitely go back. The store is in a very conveniently placed location. I hope they change the cart policy.

The fit is perfect and the shopping convenience can't be beat. Once you have your size, you can buy clothes from any of their locations or online. Every item fits exactly the same. Theo customer service has been unbelievable as well. I live in Indiana, but would truly drive back to Madison, WI to see Kelli. She goes above and beyond every single time.
