THIS IS NOT A HOTEL. This is a restaurant/bar that has some bedrooms upstairs. Like a cross between an Inn and an Air BnB. But without the hospitality of an Inn or the autonomy/self service facilities of an Air BnB. There is no service of any kind and no hotel amenities. There is no reception or front desk (check in is done at a table in the restaurant) so if you want to be out later than 11:30pm you need to call someone on their cell to let you back in to the property. There is obviously No room service (or even an in room phone). Sure there's a mini fridge, but there's nothing in it. The description states "complimentary bottled water" but there was none to be seen, there wasnt even a glass for tap water. The rooms are fine, if kinda bare, and while recently renovated the finishes were not great - everything was a little off, like the door to the mini fridge, which scraped on the floor and could be opened until you moved the floor rug. Or the electronic lock pad on the bedroom door that had been fitted at a crooked angle. for the decor think high end student residence. Our "queen" Room had a double, not queen, bed in it. The bed itself was very soft, but did not have feather comforters or pillows (I guess great if you have allergies?). And the sheets were 100% polyester. Not sure how that constitutes "luxury" as the hotel description states... One major issue for me - the windows were not fitted well and as a result there was a constant stream of cold air coming in, which in feb in NY state was FREEZING. And meant we needed to keep the heating running the whole time - which was in turn SUPER noisy (added to the general street noise which wasn't muffled at ALL). There are no common areas aside from the bar/restaurant. It's just not a hotel. Which would be FINE if it billed itself as an Inn or a hostel, But they sure as hell charge hotel prices! So I am going to preface this by saying I have not actually eaten their food, so this is not going to be about the quality of the food. I found the menu online and saw the raspberry espresso martini-I decided immediately that I needed to try it. I went for a date night and when we arrived the waitress told me that she could not verify my out-of-state ID herself and would have to bring it to the manager to confirm it. I am in my mid-twenties though I know I look young, so I was not particularly surprised to be carded, and her leaving with my ID was a little odd but I didn't think anything of it. The manager came out and walked to our table, then held up the ID right in my face without saying anything. He continued to stare (very much with the energy of someone looking you up and down and judging you the whole time) at me and then told me "I can't accept this," shoved the ID at me, and walked away without another word. There were no pleasantries, no explanation, and just generally made me feel like I had done something wrong for asking for a drink. The waitress came back and tried to give a bit of an explanation (apparently my ID didn't "look enough like me") and to apologize for what had happened, but the whole interaction left such a bad taste in my mouth that we immediately left without ordering. I've since looked it up and found that apparently that not taking out-of-state IDs is something that some restaurants in NY do, and I wouldn't have been upset if the manager had even attempted to be polite or explain. This is the first time I've ever left a yelp review-I've never been tempted for any other business-but I have never had an experience that made me feel so upset or uncomfortable. I normally don't post reviews, but this place was too good not too. My friend and I had just finished hiking at breakneck and decided to eat somewhere close. We passed by Carters and thought, why not. Great decision. Staff (shoutout to Hannah!!!!!) were so amazing, kind, and attentive. Aside from the awesome staff - the food was amazing. We had some drinks which were very tasty. Our app was the Buffalo Brussel sprouts... and wow. Charred just right, sauce was hot but not omg I need to drink water after every bite hot.. the sprouts came with Gorgonzola and bacon - two things I do not eat.. but it was so easy to just skip that part. Next came our entrees. I got the cauliflower caprese pizza. Being gluten intolerant, it's a struggle for me to find food I want to eat at restaurants.. let alone edible GF pizza. This pizza was so damn delicious... oh my goodness. You couldn't even tell it wasn't full of gluten. I was disappointed when I finished the leftovers at home later that night.. my friend got the blackened chicken salad which she also loved. Being from NYC, I'm sad Carters is so far away from me! Foodie Heaven. Carter's has everything from casual pub fare to an a la carte raw bar and main courses that showcase the talent they have in the kitchen. Truly one of those "unicorn" spots where everything is done well. Guests wanting pizza and wings will leave just as happy as ones ordering oysters, tacos, or salmon. Having tried many dishes over several visits, including their variety of specials, I have never been disappointed and always know that Carter's will make out of town guests or visitors to Beacon happy for any meal, Carter's has incredible drinks and a fantastic brunch menu - Beacon has no shortage of good food, but Carter's hold's its own. Their weekly 3-6 happy hour with half off the whole menu is just another reason its the perfect stop for anything from quick bites and a drink to a multi-course dinner. Definitely stop in! read more

We tried carters restaurant tonight for the 1st time. We started out with the clams casino and clams oregnata. Both were great . We both had some island tiki drink which was also good. For dinner my husband had the chicken marsala over white rice and I had the steak with buttered mushrooms and baked potato. Both dinners were amazing and huge portions. I got my steak well done and the sear on the top had a perfect crisp to it while still leaving a well done steak juicy which is hard to achieve as a cook. I have known the owner John since he opened his 1st restaurant Years ago and to see him from then to now made me happy to see how well he's doing for himself .good luck to John and the famiky ! read more

We stopped here on a whim on a Monday night and we were pleasantly surprised. We have lived in Beacon for 4 years and I do not know how we missed this place! It was really top notch we got baked clams fried catfish and the pulled pork and bacon grilled cheese. What an unusual experience. I'm giving The Beacon three stars, but I could just as easily make a case for one star. Or four stars. I'm having a difficult time wrapping my mind around this place. When you arrive to check in, you'll notice right away that The Beacon is doing things a little differently. As in, there is literally no place to check in. When you walk through the door you'll be in the lounge part of their restaurant. There is no hotel lobby, no check-in desk, no concierge. So you just find somebody, maybe the bartender, maybe somebody in the back sweeping the floor, and tell them you're checking in. A hotel employee will ask if you want a carafe of flat or sparkling water, then walk you up to your room. Or in our case, walk and walk and walk and walk us. We were on the top floor. Hurrah for the Fitbit stair count! Oh, you don't have a Fitbit? Get one before you 'check in'. The room was designed with some sort of modernist/minimalist sensibility. We had a bed, a desk, a desk chair and a television set. We did not have a telephone (who uses those anymore?), a second chair (in case we both wanted to sit at the same time), or functioning WiFi. Yes, all the complaining about bad WiFi you're seeing in the other reviews is deserved. The sequence seems to be: 1)Login with the WiFi info you received on the little card somebody gave you when you arrived. 2)Discover that it doesn't work. 3)Walk down all those stairs to get some help with this. 4)Have somebody give you the alternate WiFi login info that the staff uses for themselves. 5)Walk up all those stairs with hope swelling in your chest. 6)Have that hope dashed to bits when you discover that the second WiFi login doesn't work either. Save yourself the aggravation. Pop into the bakery next door to collect their WiFi credentials and, with a little luck, you'll be able to poach off of them during your stay. Or not. I had a fifty percent success rate with this. (Hey, we bought a pastry. Don't judge me.) So why the potential promotion to four stars? I like the quirkiness of the place. I like the feeling of walking into a saloon, brushing off the trail dust with my hat, ordering a whiskey, saying, "And I'll be needing a room for the night", and being led upstairs by Miss Kitty. This might be as close as I ever get to that. I like that its Main Street location is right in the mix of things. I like the adult beverages they presented to us to celebrate our arrival. I like the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. So why the potential demotion to one star? That WiFi situation is a legit problem. (Folks, you gotta fix that. It just can't be that hard to get working WiFi.) And our recently renovated room felt as if it ended with the work only 95% complete. The bathroom fixtures weren't screwed down tight. One of the electrical outlets was missing its faceplate. There is no place in the bathroom to assemble whatever personal toiletries you indulge in. (Well, maybe the edge of the sink, if you enjoy balancing things.) The in-room mini fridge was comical to open: The cabinet door swung right-to-left, the fridge door swung left-to-right and neither swung at all unless you first rolled up the too-thick area rug on the floor in front of it. It was like one of those wooden puzzle boxes. This is not a discount hotel. Given the rates they charge, the rooms should not have these type of problems. I left feeling that The Beacon would benefit a great amount by having a hotel manager spend a couple of days living in each room and learning first-hand what the issues are. So, there you have it. You know what type of person you are, you can use your own judgement to decide if The Beacon would leave you with a happy face or a sad face by the end of your stay. I had occurrences of both. And I'll leave you with this pro-tip: Every time you return to your room, ask for one of those carafes of water and carry it up with you. You'll be glad you did. read more

Great service. Seated right away and our waitress was great and super attentive. Tried almost all the drinks on their menu and none of them disappointed! Tried stuffed mushrooms with steak, garlic parm wings and Buffalo wings. Both were so good. Pro tip as for the sauces on the side to dip your wings in that way you can try all the sauces in the menu. We also ordered the chicken tacos. Honestly tasted like your average taco, expected something a little bit more elevated or flavorful. Definitely would come back to try more of their menu. read more

We were rushing to catch the metro north train to the city, missed it by 4 minutes, and then mortified to discover it's an hour wait till the next train, outside in the cold. NOPE. Asked our cabbie for recommendations on a place to stay in town, and he dropped us right outside the Beacon. "You looking for a quick bite AND to get your kid to bed quickly? Done and done, this place will take care of you." He wasn't kidding! Crossing the street to the Beacon's front door, my shoe strap snapped. Picture one-shoed mother hopping across Main Street with two suitcases, shrieking at her precocious 7yo to LOOK BOTH WAYS and WATCH OUT FOR CARS!! We got inside and the most sympathetic wait staff and hostess welcomed us. The hostess turned out to be Alla, the business owner (and Mom), who offered to let my daughter play with her own while I ran to Walmart for a new pair of shoes. The Fortune Gods Smiled Down on Me! I can't really speak to the experience of others in this hotel; I can only say that I'm blown away by Alla's supernatural kindness and empathy. Her staff also responded to me with the utmost care... perhaps it was with a pity reserved only for the most disheveled and desperate of women. Either way, I felt like Tina Turner when she arrived at that hotel, penniless and battered, looking for a harbor from the vicissitudes of life. Cut to three hours later, my Cub fast asleep in the comfy bed (very fine silken sheets, soft mattress and fluffy pillows for those interested), after a lovely warm bath in the pristine bathtub with cute little high-end soaps and shampoos, and having eaten the scrumptious pasta dish from the restaurant menu (which they graciously fed her even before taking my card for payment, during her impromptu play date while I dashed out for shoes) - QUESTION: will we actually rise at 6 in time to catch the train to the city, before the school bell rings at 8:20 prompt? ANSWER: we may, or we may stay bundled in our room at the Beacon.. swaddled like babes in the care and comfort of this beautiful hotel. Either outcome, a glorious WIN for this Mom! read more

Went to a Sunday brunch, first time to try the restaurant. Waitstaff was very good and attentive. Food was pricey and disappointing. My dish came out lukewarm, my friends came out cold and the tastes were "meh". We each had a glass of wine (one red, one white) and they were nothing special. What was really disturbing is the suggested tip calculations on the check were for 20%, 25% and 30%! Never (as in never) have we seen this. AND...the amounts were calculated on the TAXED total!! I tipped 21% on the pre-tax amount, a fair and customary tip for good service. Considering the mediocre, pricey food and management's unrealistic tipping expectation, we will most likely not return. A cross between a hostel, a fraternity house, a bar, and maybe an inn with no inn-keeper? our queen room had three windows. one was screwed shut, was taped closed with black electrical tape, and when we opened the other, the entire frame and glass came off the rail and just about fell onto the fire escape. the bathroom fixtures were new-ish and modern - but the person who installed them must have received a very important phone call before they finished screwing them to the wall... i sure hope everything is ok.. the toilet seat was held with one (of two) fasteners, so it was mostly free to roam around the bathroom as it pleased, where it would meet up with the toilet paper roll metal thingy, which also hung from the wall loosely... they probably learned those tricks from the front door handle, or the bathroom door handle, both of which were wobbly and had clearly attempted to escape from the room more than once. after a walk around town and dinner by the river, we climbed into bed around midnight. about 20 minutes later we were treated to even more entertainment as two guys who worked in the restaurant went out to the back patio to scream at each other. they were very drunk. guy 1: what the fuck man - i fucking got here at 6 o'clock! fuck you! guy 2: fuck that! who the fuck do you think closed up last night! and on and on. i walked downstairs and outside to remind them that we had paid money to sleep in their hotel. overall, we were left with one simple question ---- "is anybody actually in charge here?" Finally.. this: To the person who may or may not be managing or responsible for this place: If you exist, please contact me at the email we used to book the reservation and then use paypal to refund the $260 or so we paid you to stay in the room above the fraternity fight with the broken windows and the fixtures hanging off the walls. First time at Carter's was a very pleasant surprise. Cool layout with the lounge bar in the front. Emily was our waitstaff person and she was attentive and professional. We has the Grilled Cheese Filet Mignon and the Ahi Tuna sandwiches which were excellent. Jonathan visited our table and was a pleasure to meet. Drinks were tasty and robust. A definite go-to establishment that clearly demonstrated an attention to detail. Need to post on their website their upcoming music venue but definitely worth the drive. Initially impressed by the $300/night room -- very steep price, but had few other options for our work trip in Beacon. Here's the thing -- especially for the price -- this is not a real hotel. It has no employees to speak of, no check-in, and everything is done by calling someone on their personal cellphone. There's pros and cons to this, for instance, we left something behind in the room and after a few tries I was able to get someone on their cell to mail it back. However, we were also running late for our work appt., and check-in took 20 minutes because a bartender had to text someone to come help us, and they appeared to be extremely overworked and fielded other calls while they were checking us in. She also warned us about the sliding barn door over the bathroom which had no handle and caused my wife to become stuck inside. The warning is not sufficient, unless what they're really saying is, "Go to the bathroom with the door open." Room was fairly nice, boring minimalist style, looked very new, but lacked some basic hotel amenities -- like water glasses. They told us, understandably thinking that it was a perk, that there'd be live music that night. If this had been a trip where we needed sleep, this would've been a disaster. Not really fans of live bar bands, we stayed up in the room where you could clearly hear it through the floor, at loud enough volume for us to jokingly sing along. But after we waited it out, we went downstairs for a nightcap at midnight (early for us Manhattanites) to find the bar totally closed and a PHOTOCOPIED SIGN on the door, alerting us that this hotel -- lacking a traditional entrance -- has an 11:30 CURFEW and that we risked being locked out of our hotel rooms if we tried to leave. Despite the friendly staff, pretty great bar and restaurant, and decent room -- I find this to be totally disqualifying in a "hotel." You can't have an unannounced curfew at a hotel like you're at an old lady's Victorian bed and breakfast. What if we wanted to go to a bar? What if we needed an emergency trip to the drug store? What if we just wanted something from our car? Strongly recommended for dinner (and I guess live music). But not a functional hotel. read more

As another reviewer stated, this is not a hotel, it's a bar with bedrooms upstairs. - No elevator. We were on top floor - three flights of stairs - No phone - No tissues - No washcloths (we were given huge hand towels when we asked for them) - No drinking glasses. Bend down and slurp out of the bathroom faucet? - No shower cap even though the shower head is a rain shower type - No in-room safe - Incredibly cheap, thin toilet paper. - Wifi didn't work, then worked at 180kb download speed (that's "k"), finally given a code for another wifi that ran at the not much better speed of 1mb - Bath vanity is tiny. They could easily have extended it a foot to make counter space but didn't. Bad design. - Bed frame extends beyond box spring and mattress, we hit our ankles, so did three other couples staying in other rooms there (we were in Beacon for a wedding). - Came back to the room to find the door ajar after cleaners left without actually closing and locking the door. This is a VERY poorly run hotel, and especially so at the prices they charge. They seem to be intent at saving every nickel they can. The staff are friendly, but can't really help. We've stayed in everything from village guest houses in Papua New Guinea to the best 5-star hotels in New York and Europe and Asia. This is one we won't be coming back to. read more

Technically the food is Zero stars, but that's because me and my group were talked out of eating here by the server. It was probably the strangest experience I've ever had at a restaurant, leaving me somewhat confused and frustrated. The atmosphere and location was very trendy, and the hostess seated us though we did not have a reservation. One gold star. As we sat the server handed us our menus and asked if we had every "played kitchen" growing up. Confusion set in. He said that the food they served there was like when you played kitchen growing up. He said it was deconstructed food, that the small plates were tiny and the large plates were small. This is not comfort food, grandmas cooking or aunties cooking. The food was more about presentation. He also said we would likely pay $300 dollars for our food and not be nutritionally satisfied and have to go spend more money elsewhere to eat more. Yes, I asked myself, 'Did he just call us fat?' but after reading the other reviews, I suppose he was saving us money. I'm not exactly sure WHY he was saving us money, as most places I offer to buy their goods accept my money. Maybe he was trying to avoid another negative Yelp post? Again, I'm vey confused. Then again, maybe just by looking at the hunger in our eyes and my muffin top he knew the dishes would not be enough. I was very put off, as was the rest of my group, by this introduction to the "restaurant," "eatery,"... purveyor of tiny deconstructed food substances??? I am writing this review as I just stayed at The Beacon Hotel and for the life of me cannot understand the negative reviews. At check in, it is true there is no official area, but right by the stairs to go in the host is clearly visible (with a smile!) and easily checked me in. Once checked in, they promptly asked if I wanted still or sparkling water and brought it to my room. They offered to help with my bags. We also got a complimentary drink at the bar - a really nice touch! The staff is beyond friendly. Every single person I interacted with from check-in, housekeeping, the bar, and check-out was the nicest. While I never had a full meal in the hotel, we did have late-night bar snacks and they were fine. I also felt the rooms had good soundproofing from the restaurant below. I stayed on the second floor (just above the restaurant) and when the doors were closed properly I could not even hear the live music below (yes, they have live music too!). If you are looking for a fun upstate getaway I highly recommend you check out this hotel. It is on the east end of Main Street (which is also a plus), and close to so many cool restaurants and art galleries. I will definitely be a repeat guest. read more

Very horrible experience, don't stay here. Very expensive. Housekeeping left door to the room open. Twice. No glasses to drink from. The door handle to the closets fell off. Housekeeping didn't make up the room one day. There is no staff to help out. The electronic door lock was mounted crooked. The is no space in the bathroom to put toiletries. They lock the doors at 11:30 pm. However when I left at 6:30 am the alarm was set off because no one had unlocked the front door. Besides it being hidden inside a restaurant ( which they do not tell you ) and there being scarce parking , we finally arrived .when we checked in they told us if we paid cash they would take $30.00 off the room bill( why don't they tell you that when you call to book the room??? The bathroom tub had a blackish ring around it which looked as though it had not been cleaned in years, no tissues and 2 almost empty rolls of toilet paper ! Now to the room itself , was ok, very minimal but ok, would not put my bare feet down on the rug !!! we again tried to call for some assistance but no luck!!! I tired to make a cup of coffee but the creamer curdled !! We had a wedding that night , so we rushed to get ready, came back around 10 pm , tried to find someone to ask to help us with the room but no one was around , tried to go to sleep but the sheets and pillows smelled horrible, up early in the am (8:30 am) again tried to find some one to help us with the room , but no one was around , so we just left!!! The hotel rooms, located one or two flights up from a boisterous bar/restaurant scene with music, are noisy until closing time, and then the street shouting continues. We woke in the am to find no soap in the shower. The pillows are unsleepable. The footsteps of the guests above us resounded. The rooms aren't worth the price. I am giving The Beacon Hotel two stars only because the people were very nice, and the recent renovations have everything looking very neat and clean on the surface. Beyond that however, this is an overpriced hotel lacking a number of basic hotel accommodations. The walls are very thin and you can hear everything happening outside and in the nearby room/s. I was on the top floor, which was nice to distance us from the noise of the restaurant, but that came with the price of having to walk up four stories each time I went to the room. The WiFi did not work throughout the entire weekend. They first gave us the guest log-in, and when we reported it wasn't working they gave us their Optimum log-in. Unfortunately, that would kick us off every 3-5 minutes, so it was equally as useless. It's 2017 and basic WiFi should be provided. The TV was the smallest I've ever experienced in a hotel room, there was no phone in the room, there was literally 1 single hanger in the closet, there was no iron/ironing board, and nobody came to turn down the room during our stay. The layout of the room also made no sense, as the closet, bathroom, and entry door all opened into the same small hallway. And although the bathroom had been nicely renovated, the shower had only a half-glass door - meaning that water escaped onto the bathroom floor with nothing to keep it in the shower - and the button you pull to switch from faucet to shower popped off during our fist use (we had to screw it back on). Nothing that we experienced this weekend justified a $300/night price-tag. Beacon is a cute town, but I would highly recommend finding an airbnb (friends did and loved it for 1/2 the cost) or to check out the Roundhouse for beautiful views & true-to-form accommodations. read more

The room was nice, but the service is not good. The wifi is non existent , and I asked for their help and nothing was done . I was there for a work weekend and could work due to no wifi , they did nothing to compensate me. There is no phone in the room to call if I needed help getting online . They put all their attention into the restaurant bar downstairs and not the rooms. Not good customer service . read more

Great location for a visit to Beacon, NY right on Main Street. Brand spanking new and a very nice and comfortable place to stay.

Like others have said, this is not a hotel. It is a restaurant with rooms to let for the night. I was silently greeted by the bartender, who pointed me to some other guy, who asked me my name and then silently led me up several flights of stairs to my room. He didn't ask me for ID. There was no room key, there was key pad. Fine. But the code for the room was the security equivalent of using the word "password" for a password. There was no additional security chain or bar to latch from the inside, no "Do Not Disturb" sign. It took several attempts to lock the door when I left to get dinner. There was no room safe. I took my valuables, including my laptop, with me. The room was clean, new, and very minimal like others have said, no creature comforts, like a drinking glass or Kleenex. First, I have never written a negative review about a hotel. Second, I travel a great deal and have stayed in many hotels. Based on our experience and the reviews of others, it is clear that the owner and managers of this property have no hospitality experience. As discussed below, there is no front desk, no hotel signage in the first floor, and no work area for the hotel staff. There is no elevator and no assistance with parking or getting to your room despite the many stairs. Despite the photo, there were no bedside lights. Also, no duvet cover. Sleep on the comforter at your own risk as your may be exposed to the DNA of others. Inadequate towels (old and ready to be retired), no extra blanket, and two small and well used pillows. No chair to sit in, with only a small stool. No decent hangers, only dry cleaners' hangers left by guests. The bathroom amenities are minimal and can be found at the Dollar Store. The WIFI was not working via the three servers detected. It is highly troubling that there is apparently no house staff after 11:30. Health and safety do not appear to be of concern to the owner. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone. Find a real hotel elsewhere in Beacon or other Hudson Valley location. read more
