My daughter's hair is extremely thick and tangles easily for this reason I normally do her hair however it's been a long week and I really just needed her hair washed and blow dried so I can style it at home. I saw this location and decided to give it a try because they specialize in children's hair. Because we were a walk in we went to the next available stylist she honestly wasn't the friendliest I just expected a different personality for a children's stylist. Well, we got through the wash but she didn't want to finish because another customer came in. The other stylist even asked her what was wrong she was like awe my appointment is here I can't, I was really shocked that she wanted to just stop working with one customer to start with an easier one without any level of communication with me as the parent. She was just asking strangely, I personally think she isn't really a stylist trained to do various hair types and she didn't know what yo do. Thankfully Erika agreed to finish my child's hair to compensate for the lack of professionalism of her coworker. DO NOT TAKE YOUR BABY OR TODDLER HERE! We booked our 19 month old son his first haircut appointment. We walked in expecting a child-friendly environment, but it's just a normal barber shop, with normal seats, but with paintings on the walls and TVs at each station. We signed up specifically for baby's first haircut and we reiterated that it was our son's first haircut before starting. The barber put absolutely no effort getting our son comfortable and just went in on him, telling us to forcibly hold him down. We expected the haircut to take maybe 15-20 minutes, but we were done in 5 minutes since our barber couldn't have cared less and just starting buzzing away despite us saying we just wanted a trim. Our son ended up looking like Mark Davis (pic attached for reference). His hairline is now at the top of his head and the rest of his hair is uneven as if he took safety scissors to his own head. Needless to say we are never going back and would not recommend anyone take their child. NOT TO MENTION it was $30 for the 5 minute botch job, more than I pay for my own haircut at the barber shop. read more

Then they started to annoy me with their accounting and incompetence working a register. I thought I had some remaining haircuts in a 6 pack so I asked them to confirm. But they couldn't confirm that and said I should have kept a receipt. Seriously?! So I thought maybe to give them one more chance. In the recent visit the stylist mentioned that my 5 year old has baby hair. I know this but didn't need to hear that. That's a LONG time for a toddler. Why even make appointments? Crowded - About 10 barber chairs but only 8 waiting chairs? Mask. Mask. Mask. They still have signs there and expect everyone to wear a mask. They pack you in there. Have as many barber chairs as they can to maximize profit yet have little sitting room for comfort of parents and family. Plus the chairs are cheap and uncomfortable. No coat rack either. In summary. If you need a cut for your child. Make an appointment. Wait. Be uncomfortable and leave. Now the haircuts are good. Not great, but not bad. Everything else is bad. So put on your mask. Wait 30 minutes in an uncomfortable chair (if there is enough room) for your appointment and screaming toddler. Buy a $13 toy that doesn't work (because you touch it you pay for it) and maybe your kid will walk away with a decent haircut (just have some wine, tequila, or bourbon waiting for you at home). read more

First time going with my 2 kids and it was the worst experience ever. I gave Anh Hong a picture of how I wanted my sons haircut to be and I still asked her if she needed it for reference and she said no. The way she was cutting my sons hair looked like she was cutting like a lawn mower. When she asked if it's okay I told her I didn't like the back at all because now his hair is sticking up and all she said was "well you could have told me" while I was trying to calm my 2y.o in the front. For other parents of autistic children, this is my review: The website does not match our experience. It claims to cater to autistic children but my guess is that the new owners didn't get the memo that the old chain claims to be autistic friendly. I tried a gazillion times to call ahead to double check but no one answers the phone, but since the site said they were designed to be good with autistic kids, we went ahead and booked a spot and hoped for the best. Their website also said that masks were required which pleased us since we are high risk, but not one person was wearing one. The location itself run down and not fun looking like the old locations I saw in the mall years ago. No where as fun looking like the place we usually take our child at Snip Its in Waugh Chapel. When we arrived the woman at the desk looked annoyed when we walked in and said "what?" And we said... "we have an appointment?" Nevermind that she is not the same hairstylist the website set us up with she said "ok let's go!" Clearly that booking site is arbitrary as you don't actually schedule a haircut with a chosen stylist, It's just whomever happens to be there on that day. She seemed nice and we told her right away that our son was autistic and asked if she could be mindful of that when working with him. There are no seats next to the chair for my husband to sit on next to our son. We had to stand the entire time (unlike at Snip It's) With a 4 year old autistic child (and according to website) we expected much more to put him at ease, we arrived more than 15 minutes early and it was an empty store. Yet, she powered through my son's protests and rushed. Upon sitting him down she started spraying water all over his head, despite his protests, she kept spraying. Then she pulled out scissors and started cutting IN FRONT OF HIS EYES which terrified him. She later learned to hold the scissors away from his eyes and above his head. She turned on a show m scared my kid (he had a drowning experience in the past) and he said "no no no!no water! " and so now we have a loud show, which I asked her to turn it off and she said "no he likes it" by now my son is overstimulated and confused. She should have asked before ever turning it on. Also another employee is talking loudly in Spanish on her cell phone in the background. We have two different loud sounds going on at the same time. While an autistic child is sitting in the chair. Then she proceeds to cut his hair differently than the picture. Which is so odd since they have hardly any choices, one would think she would have mastered that haircut by now. It was clear she was trying to rush him out of the chair by making his hair much longer than the haircut we chose. We gave him a lollipop to calm him down but she was moving fast with hair flying everywhere so hair kept flying into his lollipop. I repeatedly had to keep taking the lollipop from him to clean off the lollipop of hair. She had zero fidget toys (unlike Snip it's) so all we had to calm him was this lollipop. She pulled out the buzzers and they were loud! Nothing super quiet like they claimed on the website and it was as if she had no idea that quiet buzzers were necessary thing for autistic kids. He was terrified and kept yelling "no!!!!" (Snip it's had buzzers you can't hear) She kept telling him he was a "good boy" for tolerating this torturous experience. Which out of all this nonsense pissed me off the most. My son isn't being good or bad; He is autistic and experiences sounds and sensations in a way a neurotypical person can't relate to. He is being HIM and it has nothing to do with manners or goodness After the loud buzzer came out we were done. I told her I would pay half and go somewhere else. Which was generous considering she only cut his bangs. She ok and then pulled out a loud hair dryer to blow hair off of his face which terrified him and he is screaming. Finally we are yelling " STOP!! He can't handle a hair dryer!!!" So she stops, then she says "hold on let me blow just a bit more off" and my husband yells at her "he is autistic! Stop it with the blow dryer!" It was unbelievable. She attempted to charge us more than half. Which blew my mind to which I responded "How about we pay you nothing!?" Thankfully she agreed. People need to understand that autistic people's experience matters. These kids don't experience life in the same way a neurotypical child does and they deserve to have a hair cut by a person who is empathetic and considerate of their experience. And if this location is not training their hair stylists how to do this are unethical for advertising that they do. read more

I had been trying to find a place to take my son to get his first haircut.. he is 8 months.. so a lot of salons/ barbershops ( including ones that specialize in kids ) didn't cut kids hair that young or they wasn't able to cut his hair the way I had requested.. ( which was with actual clippers and not scissors because he has thick hair texture/ Af. Am. ) .. until I found this place Cartoon Cuts. I was able to call them and confirm they would be able to cut his hair and the way I wanted , and they said yes and to make the appointment online.. Christine had cut my sons hair, and she was great. She was friendly, easygoing , understanding. I'm happy with the end result, and my son got a certificate for his haircut with some his hair to keep for memories (free) . I thought the haircut was kind of expensive for what it was. No shampoo, just spritz of the hair and cutting. After coming home and washing the kid's hair, I noticed a few uneven sections. Since I watched the stylist basically just cut straight across the bangs and the back, I figured I could do about the same or slightly worse for free and since then I have just cut her hair myself. Maybe if my kid had a more complicated hairstyle it would make sense to come here. I have been bringing my kids here for the past couple of years for their haircuts. And the ONLY reason that we come here is for the kid friendly decor and toys to keep them busy. Most of the hair stylists are bad to say the least. Considering this place is meant for kids of all ages, a basic empathy and experience at dealing with kids must be the number one job requirement. But most of the employees here have absolutely no such talent nor the patience to engage with the kids! Also their haircutting skills are below average at best. The store is generally dirty with hair all over the place - leftovers from multiple haircuts with brief moments of someone taking some initiative to clear out some of the hair on the floor. With prices more than your average hair cutting salon, this place is totally not worth the trip, except the fact that they have decor and toys to keep the kids busy. read more

My sons first hair cut experience outside the house seemed to have gotten ruined. He was fine going in and sat on the chair by himself and stayed calm through the whole process until the comb was used. The stylist kept digging in hard with the comb and he started crying and cried the entire time. She was very rough and did not seem to be experienced to cut a child's hair. Hatice was not gentle. We have cut his hair at home with clippers and he did not cry. I am afraid going forward my son won't allow us to get his hair cut because of this experience. She cut the top so short you can not even tell he has curls anymore i mean she cut it extremely short. They left us waiting 30 minutes and let four people who came well after us go ahead of us without so much as a peep to us when we would have our turn. Ah, I postponed and postponed my son's first haircut for as long as could, but finally it came time to give his beautiful long ish locks a little trim. I googled and googled places and was shocked that there are really no kid-specific places IN DC, or really very close to DC. When we got there Gloria was with a customer and it would be like a 15 minute wait, not a big deal, but as I debated, I saw another stylist finishing a haircut and really liked her demeanor and the way she was speaking to the child. So I figured, we'll go with her, Yael! Yael was wonderful! She was so warm and so gentle and sweet. Spoke to my son, who didn't speak back or really looked at her (lol) but he was very comfortable. I sat him down in the seat, Yael told him Peppa Pig was playing directly in front of him (he's never seen it but it definitely kept his interest during almost the entire haircut) and he sat happily. She put the cape on him and said this is cape and whatnot and he didn't fuss. She understood what I wanted, nothing too short, etc, and she executed it perfectly! She was fast, gentle and did a wonderful job! She wrote out a first haircut certificate and saved some of his hair in a ziplock and stapled it to the certificate. This place is super cool. It has a Nintendo kids can play while waiting for a haircut. They also have other toys for babies and younger kids. I thought the hair cut was pretty expensive for a baby. I could probably get a hair cut for the same price but my hair cuts are pretty easy. The person who cut the baby's hair was super nice. The baby did not cry at all during the hair cut. I can't be the only one who avoids haircuts because I'm terrified of a bad one, right? I do that for myself, and started doing it for my 5yo grandson, after a bad cut months ago at another "kids salon". His hair was way too long, so today I found Cartoon Cuts online while in the area, booked an appt for 20 minutes later, and showed up. He got in Ellie's chair and she immediately noticed the weird bowl cut with random choppy layers that somehow accentuated his cowlicks that the previous place did. She gave him an amazing cut while he watched Tom & Jerry (grandma bonus points for old school cartoons!) and explained why certain cuts would not work with his cowlicks, and demonstrated how to style his new cut. I was so impressed that I had her cut MY hair. (I usually go to high end salons that are booked months in advance, so this was a HUGE step!) She gave me a great cut and blowout with no pressure for extra services/products and was super friendly.
