The pros: Very nice, pleasant staff, especially Jane (also named Juan?). I did a digital perm and my hair is VERY stubborn. I had warned them about this beforehand, but no one ever seems to really take me seriously LOL. In order to not damage my hair Jane took an entire 5 hrs! working on it, and was very patient the entire time. This was both a pro and a con - pro in that my hair did not come out fried, as it often can, but con in that 5 hrs is a really long time to be spending sitting in a hair salon! They made sure I had water and a bathroom break, which was very considerate. Jane seemed very knowledgeable and specifically did different treatments for the parts of my hair that hadn't been permed before vs those that had. The top layer took very well. The cons: Again, 5 hrs... I very much appreciate them not wanting to fry my hair, but maybe a little speeding up could have been done? Also, while the top layer permed well, the bottom didn't really take - see photos. Also, just FYI, but there is no validated parking. It wasn't terrible to pay the garage, but just something to be aware of. Overall I really appreciated all the time and patience they took, to specially alter treatments for different parts of my hair, and try to not damage it. If there is some kind of middle ground to be able to do the perm and have it take completely in all the hair, and with less time, that would be ideal. read more

I got a digital perm at Hair Design Zone with Reika at the end of March. It took me months to let my hair grow to get rid of all the bleach. I can't express how excited I was for my digital perm. The hair is something so important for me, and having little kids I just wanted to have a hair that looks nice and it is easy to take care of as mom's life can be pretty busy. My first appointment took about 6 hours, at the end of it during the last wash, Reika looked really confused. The perm did not work and the curls were "gone". Despite spending so many hours there I was very polite and understanding as I know sometimes mistakes happen. She asked me if we could reschedule to fix the issue and I said ok. Initially they rescheduled for me to come back a week after I got the digital perm, but I was worried about my hair health and I suggested maybe we wait 2-3 weeks until we try again, so we did as she agreed that would be best. After 48hrs I washed my hair and I noticed that on the top part of my head there were some parts that looked really damaged, but I just assumed that it was part of the process that went wrong the first time and that it would get fixed during my next appointment. I did take a photo on April 1, which was just after I got my perm to record the top part issue on my hair. Today I went back for the second appointment to fix the curls and I showed her the top issue as well. For my surprise I was accused of having done another treatment elsewhere, which I DID NOT. I have done enough hair treatments to know that I should not do a treatment on top of another like that. The end result of all of this is that now I have damaged hair and was faulted for it, I was called a liar and accused of something that I have not done. Again, I know that mistakes happen and we deal with it, the problem is that in this case no accountability was taken and on top of that the client got blamed for something that DID NOT HAPPEN. I see a lot of positive reviews from clients that had their service with JJ, maybe I just had the wrong stylist. The final overall experience was so negative and upsetting. Do not wish anyone to ever go through the same thing. Was really hoping to be super happy about this experience but unfortunately turned out completely opposite. read more

I only ever go to Juan for my digital perm. I travel all the way from DC by metro to do so once a year! Juan is meticulous to detail and will give you her honest recommendations. She has years of experience and knows where my hair is in the process simply by touching it. And she's always checking back in as the treatment is going to make sure my hair isn't over- or under-processed. Overall the process takes me about 4.5 hours start to finish, partly because my hair takes a while to process and partly because Juan makes sure every curl is right. It ends up coming out so natural and bouncy, and my perm lasts until my next appointment. It's not cheap either, but it's worth every dollar to me. I initially came in for a wash and blowout which was quoted at $45. The stylist looked through my (very thick) hair and took pictures of my scalp and sold me a Japanese hair spa package. Of course I was hesitant but figured if I was going for the unnecessary blowout I would just treat myself after not washing my hair for a week (yuck for me but fine for other hair types). Jie jie was my stylist and explained the steps of the hair spa- it was a process of washing, exfoliating, massaging and hair mask. I'm used to when Bubbles offers a hair mask and it's just an additional 15 minutes of sitting. This was a full on massage for 30 minutes + and was very pleasant- my hair felt extremely clean after. I'd say for the massage alone it was great but combined with the after-feel of my hair, it was worth the $55 added. Total was 1.5 hours spent on my hair and I tipped 20%. Very relaxing and a convenient location to get your hair done and styled before a nice dinner out in town center. Review for Josie for cutting my niece's hair today. My niece has waist length hair. Never permed or color treated. But typical Asian hair, it's straight and thin. We had an appointment with Josie and it happened to be when the salon opened on Sunday. So there was no wait. The salon does require masks. Very well lit on a rainy day. Lots of space in the salon. Josie did a great job cutting my niece's hair. At first it was going to be a trim but noticed there were split ends that needed to go. Josie cut about 5 inches off. Hair is still long though. Hair washed after the cut and touched up after blow drying. My niece is happy which makes me happy. We'll go back cause my niece wants to get her hair colored before going off to college read more

I'm very very upset with the result of my hair. The hair cut itself is fine it's just not what I wanted at ALL. It is so short now and there's nothing I can do about it which makes me extremely upset. I asked for long layers since my layers were a bit choppy before so I wanted a little fix. She asked if I wanted 2 or 3 inches off and I agreed with 3 and she showed the length which was still past my collarbone which is fine. She easily cut off 5-6 inches leaving me with practically a Bob that barely even hits my collarbone! The lady was nice but I'm just so upset bc I did NOT want short hair like this and that's what I ended up with right as summer is starting. read more

After getting numerous haircuts and my first hair dye experience with Juan, I can't recommend her and Hair Design Zone enough. Since I like to have my hair textured and spiky, I am always cautious of where I get my haircut and tend to gravitate towards Japanese stylists. When I moved to DC 6 months ago, I was a bit nervous to see not many Japanese stylists in the area. However, I stumbled upon Hair Design Zone through Yelp and decided to give it a try after reading Juan's experience of working in Japan for over a decade. From the photos here, you can imagine how ecstatic I was to have found her. Not only does she do my hair in a way that makes me feel like I'm on the streets of Harajuku (I've never gotten so many compliments on my hair), but she is also a joy to talk to during the appointment. She'll teach me techniques on how to best texturize my hair, and happily chat with me on the phone if I ever have follow up questions afterwards. I haven't gotten a hair cut in over a year, I tend to just go to a random one place to just chop off my hair until the next year. But this time, I wanted to get a Brazilian blowout to contain my hair frizz and this salon had a good overall reputation. I made my appointment over the phone, then within an hour I got a consultation over the phone with Dennis. He was very descriptive of their services was transparent about my hair texture and it's expectations after getting the treatment and their prices, which was helpful because I've never gotten a Brazilian blow out before. After that I got the appointment confirmation via email/texts. They're really great with their COVID procedures as I felt safe from beginning to end of my appointment. Dennis was super nice and explained everything as the process was going on, even though we talked about a range of topics he was focused on my hair and was very detail oriented. Since I have quite a bit of hair there was actually a second person helping with my hair, I didn't catch her name, but she was also just as great. Apparently pre-covid they would offer their patrons coffee/tea/water during these long services (my hair took ~4hrs) but they have discontinued it to stay safe Since I have naturally curly hair from being Blasian, I wasn't sure what to expect as an end result. But it turned out great and I think I will be back eventually for normal hair cuts too. read more

I had a standing appointments at Hair Design for 2 years and left them for good. Extremely indifferent service,lack of desire to hear the customers need and close to high end prices. The last straw was my last visit when I got a disastrous color,maybe two whole number darker than I always had and when I contacted the salon I was told that Juan is busy to talk and she will give me discount during next visit. I ask if this is normal to not have a re-do policy for such an upscale salon,I got no answer. I went for the next appointment and got 20!!!! dollars discount which I even didn't feel,because "surprisingly " my service that day costed more. I had a digital perm and cut. Everything about this salon is top notch. The owner, Jane, answered the phone on a day off to schedule an appointment. I was expecting a robot prompt to hear some recordings, so it was great to get an actual person and an appointment. In the salon, the front desk girl gave me a thick magazine-book of Asian hairstyles to choose from. I did have my own photo examples ready. Jane spent 15 minutes talking to me about what I wanted, examining the photos that I showed her. I was floored by her level of communication and expertise. She knows so much about hair and it SHOWS. After talking to her, I had complete trust in her ability to produce something that I'd like. I wanted my hair to be layered but long enough to pull back into a ponytail, but I also wanted more defined, larger curls than I previously had. She cut my hair in record time, impressing me beyond belief. Jane also asked if I had eaten, and offered to pick up food from one of the neighboring restaurants. I declined, but it's very considerate of them to provide that extra service. The perming process took nearly 4 hours, but that was still an hour faster than the last perm I had. The assistants were all pleasant and gentle but thorough while treating my hair. Jane recommended products to style my hair, but didn't push for sales. Like other reviewers mentioned, she says that you can find it on sites like amazon or get it in the salon. The whole salon is so multi-lingual and I love it. Between Jane and the other stylist, they can speak English, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish. You also get 25% off cuts (not perms) as a first-time customer. read more

As much as I want to like this place, I'm leaving a 2 star rating. I got the scalp treatment and a haircut. The scalp treatment was nice. Now to the haircut- The stylist took time to talk to me what she can do to give me layers. She was explaining to the stylist that did my scalp treatment how to cut my hair (I guess she was learning to cut hair). While they were cutting my hair, the shop left the front door wide open. It was raining that day and around 60s. I was so cold sitting in the cha. When the haircut was done, they curled my hair so I was happy when I left since it looked good curled. After I washed the curls out, I realized my hair was not cut even. It looks like it's not complete yet. It doesn't look good. Hair design zone is the only place I'd go for perming my hair (though I've done haircuts and coloring in the past and my hair always looks great). I'm super impressed by Juan's talents and attention to detail. She spent time understanding my needs and preferences but also gave me her professional insights. My hair is thin and fine so she suggested a particular type of perming, which would maintain the curves for longer. Juan also takes pains making sure my hair was curled properly (see my picture). I felt she was providing an outstanding service and my hair is good in her hands. I also enjoyed the entire experience. The staff are super nice and Juan is great at conversations. Her standard is high for the work she does and I really appreciate that. As an Asian, it's very difficult to find a stylist who can handle Asian hair. Juan is excellent in this. Got my hair done again this year by Denis and I couldn't be happier with the work that he's done! He really listens to what I want and as always, is always very warm and kind towards me. At one point he wasn't happy with the toner, and even though I couldn't tell the difference, he insisted that I let him fix it, and it turned out amazing. I really appreciate his honesty and willingness to look out for his customer, even though It was close to closing time and I'm sure he was tired just as I was. Came here for a digital perm once and was obsessed with Jane and refused to go anywhere else. However, really needed a haircut so I went ahead and took the first opening. Ended up with Eriq, who is literally the worst stylist I've met in my life. This includes when I was a broke high school student - you're better off going somewhere cheap. First of all, I needed side swept bangs and a trim. She starts by examing my hair and asking what I want - poking me in the forehead and brushing through my hair as if she was straightening weaves for a tapestry. She pays no attention to my response and saunters away slowly. Nothing too complicated. This apparently takes TWO FRIGGIN HOURS. I've never had a stylist who needed to "correct" so much after the cut. And why I asked her why my hair looked strange, she blames it on my perm (which I got done at HDZ as well and there's nothing wrong with it). The back was choppy and uneven. My "bangs" included just chopping off hair on the side, with one side somewhat angled and the other just shaved in a slant. Ive never had to point out so many issues and just gave up after some point because I couldn't handle the incompetency and attitude anymore. Cut hair? No - The only thing she knows how to do is roll eyes. I paid $65 to put with an attitude for two hours and now have to go find somewhere to chop off this off because there's just no fixing it. For cut, you need to ask for Jane; especially if you're getting bangs! I'm going from a 4 year red to an for an ashy lighter color and Eric was by far, the most accommodating and patient stylist ever! I came here for an appointment in May 2019 with Eun. It was on a Saturday at 10:30 and Eun seemed to have the best availability that day; I didn't really have a stylist preference since I'd never been here before. I just needed a cut; I had waist-long hair that reminded me I probably hadn't been to a hair salon in over a year. In the past I'd always gotten my hair cut at a fairly cheap, no-frills place that had been cutting my hair occasionally since I was in high school, but I decided to branch out and see if I saw a difference in the results at a more expensive salon. I arrived about 10 minutes early and was offered tea and some books with examples of cuts/colors. There were probably thousands of pictures which were fun to peruse, but ultimately since I was only getting a cut, I didn't really need to refer to them at all when talking to Eun about what I wanted. My hair was shampooed about 10 minutes after my appointment time and then Eun started working on the cut, which took a little less than an hour. I opted to get my hair chopped off to just below shoulder-length. Eun was super chill and calm, and I enjoyed talking to her. She worked efficiently. Partway through, another customer came in for a quick consultation on an upcoming hair straightening appointment; Eun sat down with her for maybe 5 minutes before returning to me. After the cut, Eun blew dry and styled my hair a little bit. My cut was $78 after 20% tip, which was about $20 more than at my previous hair salon. I can't say I see a difference in the results between the 2 salons since I'm always getting such basic cuts, but I think the atmosphere, location, and my experience at HDZ was nicer in general. Since I only get my hair done very rarely, I would probably seriously consider coming back the next time I need a haircut, despite the higher price. The salon was clean and sleek-looking. There's free 2-hour parking if you get your parking ticket validated; I didn't have much trouble finding parking in a very nearby parking garage (I believe it was garage A) around 10 AM. The salon was located near lots of shops and restaurants. The online appointment booking system was easy and convenient. read more

Super bad service! They guaranteed with a good result and good stylist. But when I came, Mahshid started with humiliating me loudly in the shop with my hair quality, weird hair color, and gave me a totally different plan with the picture I sent via text. Keep telling me I didn't send correct pictures about my hair, and keep questioning me that I bleached my hair but I didn't! And tell me what she designed for me like an artist with price raising but don't care what result I want. I didn't take it and left. When I sit there with my friend, she just came to me and use her finger point at me to blame me I was wasting her time again and again; however, I took 2 hours to came and 2 hours to went back home without doing anything. I just want the results as I sent them, but they don't care, she keep saying she can do a totally different balayage to me with higher price, or a even higher price with fully bleached but may not apply a good result. Best salon I've ever been to ever! I've been to many high end & franchise salons in my life and Design Zone, and its owner, master stylist, Jane aka Jun, whom I call Sensei, is in a class of her own. Jun's Japanese highlights techniques are unique, and imo, more effective. They also offer chemical-free Japanese perms with a machine. Reika is an amazing colorist too and a lovely, friendly, talented stylist too. Everyone there has friendly, engaging, charming personalities. The Milbon products, sold only there, have made my hair healthy again. The salon is conveniently near Asian restaurants so you could get your hair done and after, have a date at a restaurant w dessert at a sweet shop on the cobblestone street. I never had hair treatments done and after researching online about hair treatments, I came across HDZ and contacted them via email to see if they offered scalp and hair treatments together on the same day. The replies were quick and efficient. I'm glad they were available. I was able to be seen 3 days after the initial contact. Other salons I've been to, I had to wait about a month. I had an appointment with Josie yesterday for a scalp and repair pro treatment. I have had permed and color-treated hair 5-6 years ago but it took me 2-3 years to grow out my natural hair color. My hair is straight, thick, and medium-long (chest length). I have psoriasis, dandruff, redness, itchiness, and dryness. When I showed up to my appointment about 10 minutes early, the salon looked busy but I didn't have to wait long, plus there was a lot of space. Josie did an amazing job. The massages during the scalp and hair treatment felt amazing. I thought I could just fall asleep. I couldn't tell but I believe the treatment had foams, sprays and oils which made the experience relaxing.
