We have been vacationing in angola for the last 12 summers and have always looked forward to dining at Caruso's. Their chicago pizza was one of the best and that includes pizzas from all over the country. Something has changed. Their famous breadsticks are terrible. We asked the waiter and indeed they are not baked on site anymore. They were tough and tasted like day old bread. The pizza, not as good. Our pasta was terrible. The lasagna ny father in law ordered was a frozen meal at best. So disappointed at the loss of a fantastic family tradition. Hope they fix it by next summer. read more

This is a surprising jewel of a restaurant, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, that is friendly, with competent servers and bartenders, and delicious food. I've been there for lunch when the place is jumping, and also on a Sunday night when it's slower. Their pasta is always perfectly prepared, the shrimp scampi being one of my favorites. It's about 40 miles from my house, but we'll worth the drive. They have holiday specials, a very charming wine bar, and even a separate entrance for take out orders. I have to say that as a retired sous chef, I am more critical than most, and I can count on one hand the number of 5 stars I've given my entire life. Food is decent for Italian, I've been going here since I was little, but has decreased in quality and taste over the years. This place probably deserves more than three stars, but coming from a bigger city with more opportunities to discover all kinds of Italian restaurants, this place falls flat for me. It is good for what it is: Old fashioned Italian cuisine. Which to me means that it has more oil in it's dishes, large huge portions and not enough veggie dishes or veggies offered with each meal. There's a lot of protein and starch. But that's Italian food, you say? Sure. But I've been to Italian restaurants where there's more of a balance of what's offered overall, and the olive oil is used sparingly. I really like to have a lot of veggies with my meal. And I don't mean a salad made with mainly lettuce and a few added vegetables. This is not meant to be a slam, but the cuisine is similar to Olive Garden. Caruso's is better though, because it's local and they use fresher ingredients. For me, Caruso's is one of the best restaurants in Angola and the surrounding area. So if you're looking for good old-fashioned Italian food, this is the place to go. You won't find better Italian in the area. read more

As a man who enjoys the finer things in life, I can say with complete honesty that anyone who leaves this establishment hungry or dissatisfied have either political affiliations with the Communist party or severe dysfunctions with their palates. Great portions for the prices, sensual ambiance, and the friendly staff keep me coming back time and again. Not what it used to be. This restaurant used to be a great place to go to. My family had been coming since before I was born. But over the years it's slowly progressed to an over priced, long experience. We waited over an hour for our meal and eventually left. The manager tried to assure us they could rush our food but the table next to us had been there longer and hadn't had their food yet so it just felt wrong to continue. Tables around us were also delayed and we heard that even their carry out had been slow. If you have time and money then come here but if you value your time and don't want to spend 60$ on a standard Italian dinner then go elsewhere. I likely won't come back again. read more

Was not overly impressed with their food let alone their prices. $4.00 for a pop! My son ordered a 10" pizza with ham, bacon and pepperoni and it cost us $19.00. For a total of 3 people and an order of breadsticks, our bill was over $75.00. Half of us didn't even get our food until other people were done eating at our table. My chicken alfredo was semi-warm. Up at the lake cottage up at Jimmerson or James? Nice place to come on a 7pm family dinner scene. Go water ski-ing on the lake and look forward to a big plate of spaghetti at Caruso's later in the evening. Hell go out on the pontoon and grill out for lunch and look forward to Caruso's for lasagna in the evening. Sop up that bread up in the tomato sauce and really shove your face with some good Italian food. Drive back to the lake cottage in your Cadillac with a toothpick in your mouth and your polo shirt with the turtle on it and look forward to tomorrow a productive day on the lake once again. Great place to eat while up at the lake at the cottage, great left over food to eat out on the patio at the lake. Or skip Caruso's all together and cook some deer burgers on the grill in the outdoor downstairs open patio area, cook some good steaks or BBQ and make your neighbors nose jealous...Or load up the family and go to Caruso's, either way you will. When I lived in Angola I was a regular here for their breadsticks if nothing else. Their breadsticks are still worth the trip from South Bend. So delicious, I cannot get enough of them. I honestly couldn't remember what else I would get there so we tried a few different things. The veal marsala and ribeye were delicious. My wife got the fish special which was also excellent and so much food for so little mulla. Do you cheese ravioli was OK. I will continue to come back for those breadsticks though... read more

Had dinner there there last night, The food was flavorful but I was underwhelmed by the heavily processed meat in the meatballs which gave them no texture. Also, the romaine lettuce in the Caesar Salad was wilted and the dressing was lacking flavor. read more

Several years ago and wont go back, Lasagna was nothing spectacular, then ordered a piece of pie which had the equivalent of a teaspoon coverage of egg shells in it. Contacted server, they said sorry, not even replacement offered. Cashier same thing, would not remove it from bill. read more

Stopped here for dinner, as it was recommended by friends who had recently tried it and raved about it. I had the pasta alfredo, which was okay, but I did have to add pepper to it to give it flavor. The breadsticks were tasty, but for the heart healthy folk, be forewarned that they are served in a puddle of butter. My favorite part of the meal ended up being the coconut pie for dessert. It was yummy and I would go back for more. Why the two star review? The service was horrible. I wasn't impressed when we were seated and it only got worse when our waitress arrived. While ordering she literally told us to make it quick because she had to get back to the kitchen. At the end of our meal, she snatched up someone's plate before he was finished. She never asked if he was done, nor offered to wrap it up. Overall, I was not impressed. I will probably give the food a second chance and try Caruso's again, however next time, I'll order take out. I love this place. I have celiac disease and this place is very gluten-free friendly. They have a separate menu, the staff is very knowledgable, and they take measures to ensure there is not contamination. The gluten-free food is unbelievably reasonably priced, not to mention the best around. They also offer a gluten-gluten free "flourless brownie" that is great. Food came out mediocre warm at best. Now in all fairness I understand being slow and needing to close... In town on our way to Chicago and randomly decided to eat at Caruso's for dinner, and we are extremely happy with our choice. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very comfortable and homey. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious, and most of all, a great value! Will definitely stop by every time we pass through the area. read more

This is absolutely my favorite lunch spot in Angola. It is, in fact, good enough that I've been wanting to drive up from Fort Wayne on a day I'm not working so that my husband can eat here, too. As a vegetarian, I am always able to find something good here, be it a panini or a giant bowl of pasta. Salads and breadsticks are also quite good, and if they don't make their own blue cheese, it sure tastes like it. What really sets this place a part for me, however, is the service. Caruso's has been around since the 70's, and you can tell they make service a priority. I always see the same warm hostess each time I go in, and my servers always go above and beyond to make me feel at home in the restaurant and ensure I have everything I need. They keep local beer on tap from Chapman's in Angola (and probably have other great selections - that's just the one I always eyeball and wish I could be drinking, rather than going back to work). p.s. the restaurant sits in front of a closed amusement park, which makes for an awesome setting. read more

Usually I don't write reviews I just don't go back to a restaurant. This time I will do both. First the service was excellent however the food was way overpriced. This was our favorite Italian restaurant in the area however we will now find another. My wife, grandson and I usually go here 4 or 5 times a year. Often with friends and relatives however no more. First the Caesar dinner salad was almost without dressing. I ordered spaghetti with meat sauce, at $16, and there was little sauce. Also I added a meatball that was smaller than a tennis ball. Other times we have been to Caruso's the meatballs were bigger than a baseball. Grandson ordered a small pizza and it was just a big glob of cheese. Wife had stuffed shells and the serving size was vary small, only two shells We decided to take dessert home and ordered 2 cannoli, a piece of coconut cream pie and a piece of strawberry cheesecake. The cannoli were the worst I have ever experienced. When we got home the goop that they had for filling had run out almost completely. Nothing like the picture on their website. My wife is Italian and we have made from scratch and eaten cannoli at may Italian stores and restaurant and even in Italy. These were horrible. No nuts, cream was just a sugar glop and little chocolate. The pie didn't even look like pie but just a big glop with some coconut sprinkled on top. Caruso's has been removed from our GPS. I've been eating at Caruso's since 1976. It has develop from a small town pizzeria to a queant Italiano eatery. Service depending on the time of year, is hit or miss. Went there for a nice dinner with my girlfriend for her birthday, had been there before and just loved the food. However this night was a totally different story. Our waitress, it was her first night working, and she could not keep up with the people she had on the patio where we were sitting. We had to ask for drink refills and when they came they filled my girlfriends but not mine. Had to get her attention to fill my glass, then the ice tea was so warm it melted our ice, had to ask for more ice. They did get the appetizer platter, bread sticks and salad right. We got our dinners, her fettuccine had no flavor what so ever, and my dinner was supposed to come with my choice of pasta side but I was never asked what I wanted so out it comes with fettuccine with cream sauce, which I cannot stand! So after 5-10 minutes of trying to get the waitress' attention she comes over and says that is what it come with. Really! I asked for spaghetti with marinara sauce and out it comes with linguine noodles with marinara? I just decide to go ahead and eat it but the sauce was lousy, I could get better out of a can. I go inside to find a manager to tell them the problems, she goes out and asks my girlfriend what the problem was even though I just told her. She goes in and talks with the waitress then comes back out and says that the waitress had fixed my dinner even though it was not what I wanted and that it was her first night working. The manager says that she would like to give us a free dessert for the issues we had, we told her no as we had dessert waiting at home. She goes back inside and comes back out and said that the waitress forgot to bill us for our drinks so that would be our discount and that they would like to really give us a dessert. REALLY!!! Called a couple of days later to talk to an owner. I proceeded to tell her the problems that we had , she asks me who the manager was, I described the manager to her, whats the luck it her MOTHER. Then she asks were we sat and whats the luck, our waitress is here NIECE. WHATS THE LUCK!!! Although she had a hard time believing what I told here, she did tell me that they would refund our dinner and send us some gift certificates. Will probably never go there again. It's been a few months since we have been here and something major has changed. The bread was honestly disgusting. It was hard to chew and had no flavor. The food that we have ordered for years did not even taste remotely the same. It was not good at all. Not to mention, the service was awful. It took us over an hour to get our food and almost just as long for salads. Additionally, my dad's salad had a hunk of plastic in it. My family and I make a visit to this restaurant every time we are staying at Pokagan State Park. The staff is friendly and willing to seat a huge party of about 20 people with a smiling face. The food is very good with a lot of pasta and non-pasta options. The breadsticks that come with your meal are ridiculously good!
