About two weeks ago, visiting Auburn for work, I ordered a small Supreme thin-crust pizza from Salvatori's and brought it back to my hotel. The pizza itself was very tasty, but the crust was extremely soft and floppy--so much so that it couldn't support the toppings. When I picked up a slice, the toppings basically slid right off the bottom. The crust had apparently decided its job was simply to provide transportation from the kitchen to the box. The flavor was good, though, so afterward I called the restaurant simply to offer some constructive feedback. I explained that I thought the pizza had been pulled from the oven too early and wasn't fully cooked. The young lady took my feedback in stride and thanked me. This week, I decided to give Salvatori's another try and ordered the exact same pizza: small Supreme, thin crust. But this time I was very specific. I asked for the crust to be very crispy and told them I was perfectly fine with the cheese getting browned. At the end of the call, they confirmed, "So you want it well done?" I said yes. Perfect. We were speaking the same pizza language. I was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. When I arrived, however, the pizza wasn't ready. After waiting a few minutes, one staff member asked another if they had taken the order for the "10-inch carryout pizza"--a.k.a. my pizza--and there seemed to be a little scrambling. The manager came right up and explained that they were "late" getting my pizza in. I said no problem. Things happen. I waited another 15-20 minutes. When the pizza finally came out, I watched an employee hand it over to the woman at the counter. She opened the box, looked at the pizza, paused for a good five seconds, slowly closed the lid, turned around, faced me and said: "Sir, your pizza is ready." That five-second pause should probably have been my warning. To their credit, they were very nice about the delay and gave me a piece of cheesecake at no charge. I had intended to pay for it, but they insisted because of the inconvenience, which I genuinely appreciated. Here's where my pending disappointment became actual disappointment. I opened the box. It looked almost exactly like the pizza from two weeks earlier. Definitely not well done. Definitely not crispy. Once again, the crust was soft and floppy. Apparently, "well done" and I have a different definition than Salvatori's oven does. At that point, the pizza was already cut, I had already waited the extra time, and I really didn't want to hand it back and ask them to put it in the oven for another 10 minutes just to get the crispy crust I had specifically requested. I hate leaving anything less than a five-star review, especially because the pizza actually tastes good and the staff were friendly. But after specifically calling about the issue after my first experience, then giving them another chance and being extremely clear about how I wanted the second pizza cooked, it was disappointing to receive essentially the same result. The missed order and extra wait wouldn't have bothered me much by themselves. Things happen, and the complimentary cheesecake was a thoughtful gesture that I appreciated. But when a customer specifically requests a pizza "well done," the restaurant confirms that request, and the pizza still comes out noticeably underdone, that's harder to overlook. I wanted crispy. I got floppy. Twice. Two pizzas, one review--and unfortunately, the same crust both times. I'm just not sure there will be a third. I'm rooting for you Salvatori's, I really am, but man-o-man.

Delicious Italian food owned and managed by a local Italian family! You often will see the family managing and helping out in the restaurant. A must order is the Al Capone, simple, yet fancy, spaghetti dish topped with a homemade tomato base sauce loaded with vegetables. You won't go wrong ordering Al Capone and all of the other Italian dishes. If you feel like something other than Italian food, try the ribs. They fall off the bone and melt in your mouth. The ambiance works for both families wanting a quiet dinner and those wanting more noise. You have the option to sit in a traditional family side or a bar side. The bar is decorated with sport memorabilia and has TVs where you can watch any sporting event - just request and they will turn the channel. On the weekends, they have fabulous bands performing in the bar...they are fun to watch and listen as well as a great place to hear local bands! read more

By the way Yelp sucks. Go to Urbanspoon if you want a real review. I just spent an hour going through all of the Sturgis restaurants. They are all mis rated. Most could be better but yelp filters the reviews in such a poor algorithm they have little reflection of what honest people want to say about a restaurant. I purposely make a point to stop in when I'm back home! One of my all time favorite places to meet up with old friends or watch my favorite sports team! Laid back atmosphere with great food (definitely recommend the pizza and any of the appetizers), great service and the owner's are amazing! DaVinci's is a stand out restaurant in Sturgis so don't sell yourself short in missing out on their food and atmosphere! read more

Food is simply delicious! Every time I go with my friend I ask for Spaghetti Al Capone. I tried it for the first time in October 2010 and since then it's my favorite. Nonetheless, I have tried other dishes such as Chicken Parmigiana, Fettuccine, among others, and all of them are tasty. There is no warmth, no personality, and certainly no sense that anyone involved believes dining should be an experience worth remembering. Were negative stars an option, they would be more appropriate. This was a disappointing meal and an unfortunate reminder that having no alternatives is sometimes the greatest ingredient in a restaurant's success.

We have tried dropping in here during a busy Friday or Saturday dinner hour. The wait can be very long as Destination 814 is rather popular in these parts. You can find Destination 814 near the downtown Lagrange area. Head north on IN 3 or I69 about an hour. Destination 814 is a kind of a "modern" bar located in a more rural-small town area. The inside would remind you of a typical small sports bar (see pictures). The whole place is rather small but nicely decorated with sports stuff. The bar is very attractive - lots of back lit bottles to entice you. It only seats about 11 people. The dining room seats about 46 people. It can handle a couple groups of 6-8 people. There is an outdoor area that will seat about 16 people. The team here was very friendly and hustled the refills and food. They had plenty of help on this night. The menu is not overly large but it seem to have something for everyone (see picture). Salads, burgers, wraps, flatbreads and a variety of entrees are reasonably priced in the $15-20 range. They have a large menu for bourbons, whiskeys, beers and cocktails. Note that none of the drinks have prices - which is becoming more common place. We started with the garlic buns. These are pretty popular and have good reviews for good reasons. They are soft and buttery with a slight garlic taste. The beer cheese had a nice taste and thickness. Easy to dip. Not a strong cheese flavor. My wife had the Crab Rangoon flatbread. She really liked the amount of crab in the sauce. The crunchy wontons were a nice add. The sweet Asian chili sauce was fairly standard. The buttered chicken flatbread (Indian style) sounded delicious as well. My cod basket was very good. Three surprisingly large pieces of fish amongst French fries. The cod was fresh tasting and flaky. The batter was thin and stuck to the fish well. Not a lot of distinguishable seasoning in the batter. The tartar sauce was slightly sweet mayo mixture with a very mild dill taste. The fries were a little bit thicker in size and had a slight crisp. The seasoning gave you some salty southwest styling. Overall, I would encourage you to drop in and try Destination 814. Go early, lunch to 5p, if you are making a special trip...if you want to avoid the big crowd.
