I received a gift card for Carusos and my husband and I went there for Valentine's day lunch. A company was having a luncheon so the parking lot was congested, and once inside the waitstaff was rushing to meet everyone's needs. Our wait at the hostess station wasn't too long, but the woman that seated us was kind of rude. She was busy, so I can understand that she was probably frazzled....but still. Our waitress was quite nice thankfully. I ordered the chicken marsala and my husband had the spaghetti and meatballs. Both meals came with a salad and breadsticks. He got a Caesar and I had a tossed salad. His salad seemed fine, mine was ok except that there was about a 1/2 inch of water at the bottom. Also the dressing was served in a packet like you would get if you got a salad at a drive through (I know this sounds picky, but come on! The meal is close to 20 dollars, make it look nice lol) The breadsticks are huge and like the other reviews have stated they come in a puddle of butter/oil. I didn't want to look like a caveman so I ate mine with a knife and fork as did my husband. While we waited for our entrees another couple was seated and served their meals before we got ours. Now if I ordered a well done steak I'd expect a wait but that wasn't the case. Once the food came we started to eat. The chicken was juicy and nicely cooked, but the Marsala sauce wasn't very tasty. It resembled the gelatinous sauce that comes in a lean cuisine. Also, the chicken had been breaded prior to being plated but the breading was soggy. My Alfredo pasta wasn't bad, but it was a tad on the bland side. Normally when I dine out I either finish my meal or take the rest home with me. I did neither this time. My husband got the rest of his boxed up but only because he wanted to give the meatballs to the dog (they tasted ok but the texture indicated that they overworked the meatballs) For dessert I got tiramisu and he got a cannoli. I've never had tiramisu, but theirs were really good! Very rich, but very good. Same with the cannoli. Would I come here again? Probably not. First time here. My wife and I came in a Sunday for dinner. No wait so we got right in. Started with the bread sticks. They were very good. Then we got salad. My wife got the Ceaser and I got the House with ranch. I finished mine and my wife got down to her last couple bites and discovered an ant drowned in the Ceaser dressing. Jokingly I asked my wife if her salad tasted good. She replied the dressing was a bit lite. My wife got the Specialty Dinner Cod over a bed of cream sauce with horseradish, a side of spaghetti. She said she was underwhelmed as the fish had little flavor except the lemon she squeezed on the fish. Her entree she gives 2 out of 5 stars. I had the stuffed shells with meatballs and it was good. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars. It's hard to say if there will be a 2nd visit here for us. The bread sticks were the best part of the meal. There was no compensation for the bug in the salad. No manager come to address the issue. For that my overall rating is 2.5 stars out of 5. read more

Stopped in while passing through, their food is top notch and service was spot on. We were pleasantly surprised with the entire experience here. We have been coming to Caruso's for as long as they have been at the lake. Something lately has seemed off. We took grandkids to Pokagon and figured Caurso's has something for everyone. I called ahead around 7 on Saturday to make sure they would be open...we've driven there at 8 before and been shuffled to the bar and rushed so they could close. The person who answered didn't know what time they were closing (standarDize yoUr hours?) and put me on a long hold before coming back to say the kitchen would close at 8:20. Just to clarify, I asked if we arrived and ordered bEfore 8 there wouldn't be an issue. We got there around 7:40 and everyone was rushing around like a fire drill. I asked which was the most popular gluten free dish and the waitress replied no one has ever ordereed the ravioli you should just go with rhe penne pasta. So I did. While tHeirr sauce is good, I could have fixed this meal aT home for under $3. Obviously they all wanted to be gone by 8:20. We woofed our food down and got oUt and we're tthe laSt ones to do so. There's competition at the lake. You can't keep the family tradition alive this way. So sad. It happened last summEr too. Just adults and we went to the bar and were rushed out of tHere. We have been going to Caruso's for a few years and have found this restaurant to be a favorite. The food is great, but the pizza exceptional. The crust is thin and crispy with generous toppings. The staff are wonderful. They are friendly, efficient, and remember returning clientele and their preferences, making each returning customer feel like a valued friend. One of our favorite places! Took my family of nine for dinner here at Caruso's. We were seated in 10 min on a thurs night and the restaurant seemed very full but not crowded. Our server as well as everyone in the store seemed very friendly and professional and service oriented. My water glass was filled at least 15 times by our server. The breadsticks were amazing once you add some Parmesan and crushed pepper. We loved the pizza although I got the grilled salmon on salad and it was some of the best salmon I've ever had. Had a fantastic gluten free meal at Caruso's. I am focusing on that part of the menu because I was pleasantly surprised that they had a gluten free menu and it was pretty extensive. The chicken Parmigiana was wonderful, crispy and cheesy. It came with a Caesar salad w gluten free croutons. They also have a gluten free crust for pizza. So glad to have discovered this menu in a family favorite restaurant. The server was excellent and explained how the kitchen is set up for gluten free preparation. We had the original sausage roll. It was delicious. Wife had Torpedo#6. She lived it. Ordered bread sticks, with cheese sauce. The bread sticks are not the quality they use to be. I'm very harsh on my restaurant reviews and am usually very stern with my ratings but Caruso's is just a delightful place. It's a family joint so you know what to expect right away and the good folks here serve up a wonderful atmosphere that is clean, warm and inviting. Caruso's is in the middle of nowhere and it has some of the best spaghetti I've had in many years (my test for a good Italian eatery). We have dined at Caruso's numerous times over the years. It seems to be a local staple, but the food is inconsistent. I have had great meals and no so great meals here. Caruso's does a great job with catering. I went to a wedding last year and the food was fabulous. My family has had many events in the small banquet area, which is a very nice space. Where Caruso's falls short is when dining in. The food can be very inconsistent. My favorite foods here are the Chicken Parm, pizza or sausage rolls and normally the breadsticks. On our most recent dining experience, our food was hit or miss. I simply did the soup, salad and breadstick. The soup was quite good (sausage leek), the salad was fine, but the breadsticks were dry and hard. The rest of our group did not care for their food, which was veal marsala, and Cuban sandwich special, and a pasta and pepper dish. The service was just ok. I do enjoy the Chapman's local brew that they serve. The restaurant was really loud and it seemed to take awhile to get our food. I recommend playing it safe and sticking with Chicken Parm or pizza. read more

Probably the worst Italian food I have ever eaten in my life so bad after having one piece of pizza I couldn't eat it anymore it was so bad my daughter's pasta primavera was so buried in olive oil that the vegetables were unrecognizable terrible terrible terrible not to mention they forgot to bring out my soup yet still charged me full price after we complained run do not hide from this restaurant it has seemingly fooled the people of Steuben County what Italian is supposed to be like. This restaurant used to be excellent but it's an example of what happens when your child goes to Ivy Tech and becomes a so called chef and burys everything in olive oil and bad mozzarella. I love this restaurant! We own a lake home in Hamilton IN, nothing compares with Caruso's for their pizza's and sausage rolls. May have been around since the 70's but it seems to have stopped progressing around 1983. Our server was great, I didn't catch her name but she also teaches at a kindergarten. Very friendly and personable, especially for dealing with my two daughters and my parents. Quick breakdown: Caesar salad was made of only the tougher outer leaves of the romaine. House salad had rancid tasting croutons and processed cheese on it. Alfredo was sweet tasting. Not a compliment. Meatballs seem to be made of (only) pork that has been through a food processor. Seasoning is ok, but the texture was like something from a can. Hated them. Sauce was bland. Spaghetti was over cooked and way too thin. Reminds me of that time I accidentally ate some Chef Boyardee. The bread-sticks look impressive when they turn up. Slathered with butter and dusted with Parmesan cheese. However, they taste like baked hotdog buns. Portions are large. Decor is very dated. Being seated next to a table where a lady belched loudly after every bite didn't help the ambiance. (Not really their fault). Having some music on would have helped quite a lot. Did I eat it? Yes, I was very hungry. Did I like it? No, not really. Did I hate it? No. Just felt very much like school or hospital food. Ate here based on seeing a billboard near to where we are staying and on the recommendation of our landlords. We couldn't be more pleased. Our server, Anna, was friendly and helpful, and the food was very good. I had the smaller portion of spaghetti w/meat sauce. My husband had the filet. Our friends had capellini w/marinara sauce and soup & salad (he's on a diet). Everything was delicious. We're in this area for another ten days and it's likely we'll be returning for another dinner. We have been here two times in the last two weeks and sat in the bar area. The food is excellent here. The atmosphere is awesome. But it is way too cold in here. Their Breaded Mushrooms used to be individual baby Bella mushrooms. They were flavorful and tender. Now they cut up a big portabella mushroom and it is tough and flavorless. Decided to try this out while shopping in Angola. The food was ok nothing to write home about but not bad. The veal was not too bad, the pasta was ok, and the sauce on the Alfredo was good but a note had wine in it I'm fairly sure. Oh and the bread sticks, they were pre made and put on a plate with garlicky butter or margarine, not very good. Lastly the atmosphere, I couldn't place it but was strange maybe if I grew up on the place it would have been ok but it was odd and old. I will start out by saying the service here was great that's the reason for any stars. I ordered a pasta with veggies and white sauce. The veggies were frozen and steamed with no seasoning what so ever and the sauce was beyond bland along with being lumpy and gritty. The bread sticks were good. We had a group of 13. We called days before to give notice that so many of us would be coming in at one time. They told us we would just have to show up. We got there around 6:20 pm on a Saturday. We were willing to wait even tho they could not give us a time. It started to lightly rain. Not once did anyone come to check on us. We saw many people leave and had people get seated before we were allowed to finally go in. After more than 45 mins my boyfriend went in and told them that we felt we were being treated unfairly. They told him we are working on it now. They said no more than 20 mins. Few mins later a man came out told us 10 mins more. Then what I am guessing to be the manager said 2 more mins. She then went on to tell us she told the table she loved them and didnt want yo rush them but asked how much longer. They were paying then. 20 mins later we were still outside waiting. We finally made it inside and it was freezing. We waiting for ever for drinks, salads, and our food. The waitress seemed nice but also seemed out of it and overwhelmed. They only set the table for 12 while they knew we had 13. We had to get our own chairs and dishes for him. They did not do it. The manager then came over and rubbed my boyfriends back and asked only him how things were going. They did turn up the ac after we made multiple jokes about it but they turned it right back down before we could even pay for our checks. No one seemed all that friendly and u could see the kitchen staff come out and joke and hug on each other. We also had to wait to order our food until after another table paid their bill. While none of us had ever been there, none of us will be going back. We heard bad things before we went and figured we will see how it was ourselves. We did not leave until after 9:30 pm. The menu is large and varies from authentic to a little more Americanize choices. Better then olive garden but still shy of truly authentic .My favorite thing on the menu is the Lori Chicken Salad.
