Kinda hard to reach, this place, hiding behind the furniture store. They could use a sign from Redwood Avenue. But then they seem to have plenty of business aready. The enchildas were adequate, the rice and beans reasonable and in good-sized portions. The tamale was a bit disappointing - it was nice and big, and had a lot of meat, but hardly tasted like a tamale. Maybe it was cooked too long, and it could have used more masa, though having a lot of meat would seem like a bonus to a lot of folks, and even to me sometimes. David B. is right, you have to have friends or family that know where this place is but it is certainly worth searching out if you are hungry for authentic Mexican and/or BBQ. The problem is that if you are not a local, you have no idea how to get to it! You can SEE if from Redwood Highway but have to drive ON Redwood AVENUE and then look for a sign for a furniture store (turn there) and it is around the corner from there! My sister told me that we had to make reservations if we were going on a Friday night (really??? In Grants Pass?) and especially if we wanted BBQ (which we did). We arrived for our 5pm reservation for a party of 7 and they did have our table ready. It appeared that if you didn't have a reservation, you may not have gotten a table, they were that busy already. The place has a great selection of pinatas hanging from the ceiling that my niece and nephew found entertaining and they has Mexican spices available for sale in their corner store. While everything we had to eat was excellent, the service could have been better. We asked for water for the table twice but never got any.. and they totally forgot my 75 year old father's dinner completely. It appears to be a family run place and Mom runs the front counter cash register and take-out counter (at times 20 people deep) but should keep a better eye on the restaurant portion too. We ordered BBQ ribs and chicken and they were very, very good. The portions are HUGE so we ended up taking a lot of the BBQ home because we also sampled the Mexican food also. The burrito was HUGE and filled with great meat, beans and rice and even split between my niece and nephew was too much for them. My sister and I split the 3-item plate which had a tostada, enchilada and taco --- all were very tasty and no leftovers there. Dad did eventually get his tamale and he said it was also tasty, although he seemed to be more focused on the ribs that were close to his end of the table! This place is very clean, restrooms were spotless, and you get a LOT of good food for your money. You also get lots of leftovers thanks to their generous portions --- which made my nephew very happy late that Friday night when he went looking for a snack! SOME ADVICE: If you DO want BBQ, be sure to call them 1-2 day ahead of time and place your order. When we left at 6pm, they had already run out of BBQ and our server said we could probably sell our leftover ribs to the highest bidder --- we decided against it for fear of a riot right there in Grants Pass! :) read more

I tried this place based on some friends recommendations. My brother in law is from Mexico and makes me torda (sp?) sandwiches. I was excited to try it here. I was very disappointed. The actual sandwich came out with a soggy bottom half - the bread. I really should have sent it back. I was told the meat is super tender and flavorful. I found just the opposite to be true. It was extremely bland. I even tried lots of the different salsa's that they had. It didn't help. This is all I tried here so maybe something else is better. But to have soggy bread is really bad. Not my favorite. Have come here plenty as I have relatives in the area who love it. I've ordered several different dishes, including quesadillas, chicken soup, and beef tacos. The tacos were pretty good. Everything else I found to be bland or way too greasy. Its a humble looking place, and a bit off the beaten path due to being at at the end of a cul-de-sac but looks very festive due to the fiesta decor and lots of piñatas hanging from the cieling (also a collection of license plates? slightly quirky but I think due to the casual family-friendly atmosphere it can pull it off :) . The service has always been friendly. You get huge portions for the price, so don't be afraid to split a dish with someone...or be like me and just save the rest for tomorrows lunch! I wish I could give this place higher marks because I've never had a bad experience here and its such a good deal for what you get. However, the flavor/quality just isn't there for me unfortunately. read more

Do I have a story to tell you. Myself, my wife and her family used to come here all the time until recently. When I got engaged, the entire family thought it would be great to come here and celebrate. We ended up being served incredibly horrible food. The tamales were clearly half frozen and terrible, the beans were beaming with white coloring from all the lard they had used and the most the rudest service I have ever had. The waitress was clearly a family member taking our order. As a fluent native Spanish Speaker, I ordered in Spanish so it would be easier on her. She came back with wrong orders on almost all our plates. I let her even know nicely in Spanish that this is not what we had ordered, She then had the audacity to argue with me and tell me, "Look here, I know what you ordered and this is what you ordered young man." Then the owner showed up to see how everything was, I informed him that we were surprisingly disappointed in the food and service. His exact words were and I KID YOU NOT..."Oh well Buddy, that's how we roll." Never again will we come here. I urge all of you to not let establishments get away with treating their customers this way. read more

I ordered their "doom" nachos when I came here with my nephew for his 29th birthday. What a cluster!. The only good thing I can say about this place is that they have positively amazing green salsa. The ONLY downside to Casa Amiga is that the quality of the food, the friendly staff, the huge portions (get the Macho Nachos and split between two) and the great service has resulted in a very large (numbers wise) clientele. Sometimes you need to wait for quite a while for a table, especially on Fridays. And sometimes the wait to pay your bill is ten minutes or longer. Go there. Just don't go on the nights when I'm dining. I hate to wait. Seriously, Casa Amiga is Five Star and is worth the wait. read more

I went back again and took family visiting from Pennsylvania with 3 kids. The kids loved the festive atmosphere with pinatas hanging all over the ceiling. The food was generous and superb. I really can't understand what people are complaining about. Maybe people are so used to eating Americanized Mexican food that they don't know what real Mexican food and seasonings taste like? I had the tongue tacos, the kids got nachos, the burritos were enormous and delicious. Everybody was very happy with their food. The salsas on the table were delicious and of varying degrees of hotness. The chips were not greasy and just a little bit of salt...very fresh. The beans were awesome.
