We came in and had a great meal. We are from Southern California so we are used to a specific style of Mexican food. Our meal was different but it was tasty and satisfying. I got a vegetarian burrito which was enormous. I split it in half and saved it for tomorrow. My wife got a Mexican pizza which was also enormous. The kids got kids quesadillas with French fries. I've eaten Mexican food all over California and Mexico, and this restaurant has some of the best stateside Mexican food I have ever had. The menu is huge, which is normally a red flag for me, but every single item I've had off of it is to die for. Today I had the Burrito De Camarones (shrimp burrito) and my mind was absolutely blown. The white sauce is exquisite, the shrimp was perfectly cooked, and the veggies, rice, and beans inside were all perfect. The service was some of the best I've had. Our hostess and waitress were patient with my broken Spanish, and helped me when I stumbled over words. They brought out a very tasty salsa and a plate of refried beans for our chips, both of which tasted hot and fresh. The restaurant itself reminds me a lot of some of the best spots I've been in Mexico, with tasteful decorations that make you feel like you're eating in a local place. If I could give this more stars I would. I can't wait until my next trip to Oregon so I can eat here again. read more

It has a good sized parking lot, and is located across from a park. The automatic appetizer when you sit down is chips with salsa and refried beans, which is such a nice touch. After having a really disappointing meal here a couple years ago, I decided to give them another chance. I could not figure out why this place does such good business? I figured maybe I just ordered the wrong meal before? So here we are, yet another BAD, bad, overpriced meal. Ugh. Why is this place popular? Just flippin' weird. Trust me when I say, this place is not worth it. I decided to try the Chili Colorado this time around. The meat was decent and the sauce was ok but unlike authentic Chili Colorado, there was zero spice to it. My husband's Chili Verde was also not spicy at all. Not that it was bad, just not authentic in any way. The rice was maybe half a cup, so chintzy, and my whole beans were quite literally poured into a cup right from a can....super bland and needed at least a little salt. Who are they cooking for? Tastes like nursing home food for the over 80 crowd. I also saw on the menu the warning "there will be a charge for any chips over the 2nd basket" wow I've never seen that before!! How cheap! It was a dark and stormy night, in January, on a Wednesday. And this place was busy. We were seated promptly and had our order taken shortly afterwards. After a reasonable amount of time, the food arrived. It was okay. Ordered the chimichanga which should be deep fried and this was just grilled ( so a little crispy but only on one side). Ordered it with shredded beef - got ground beef. Hubs ordered the carnitas plate - very thin slice of flank steak. It was however some of the best red rice I've ever had, and that's saying a lot as I usually don't even like Spanish rice. Server was friendly at the start and end but we only saw home once during the meal. Someone else brought us extra napkins and water. Had to go up front to get the check and pay. Still giving 4 stars because I think it might be a staffing issue based on all the "now hiring" signs. These are still trying times and wish them the best. read more

It was ok...I'm used to authentic Mexican food since I live in the San Joaquin valley in Ca and there are nothing but excellent Mexican restaurants available to us. This was similar to them but i was disappointed in that our food was a bit bland. The tortillas were great though and the service was acceptable With no one in the restaurant, we were seated all the way in the back next to another table with three young ladies that were having a 'girls night out' so it was annoying listening to their loud conversations about the guys they were dating/married to or playing around with. Oh, and whether to order another margarita or not, which our waiter was more than happy to 'engage' in their silliness. What ended up being hysterical was they tried stiffing him with their bar tab! My wife and I have been regular customers of El Molcajete Restaurant since they opened. We always enjoyed their food, Lunch and Dinners, even through Covid, we chose El Molcajete for Mexican food over other Mexican Restaurants in Grants Pass. We watched their growth and were excited as they remodeled and expanded the outdoor seating. Always excellent service and good, quality food. We have used El Molcajete to cater several large family gatherings, pending hundreds of dollars on several occasions. We were huge fans. Until last night. We stopped for dinner after our granddaughter's basketball game and ordered out favorite menu items - Chicken Enchiladas Verdes for my wife and Chicken en Mole for me. What a disappointment. the Enchiladas Verdes were covered in some thick green glop that looked like pesto with a hint of spice but no real flavor. It was not like any green enchilada sauce I had ever seen or tasted. The Chicken en Mole looked OK, but the meat was dry and so tough that our knife would not cut it. I was mole was the worst I had ever tasted. It was totally tasteless. I sent it back as uneatable. I reordered the chicken enchiladas with red sauce. Again disappointment. While the meat was at least tender, the red sauce had no flavor. Just dull and plain. I have had better meals from the window of a food truck. All 3 of these entres we have had before at this restaurant. They had always been excellent in quality and flavor. Something sad has happened in the kitchen of El Molcajete Restaurant. After last night's dinner, I doubt we will be going back. read more
