This is my go to place when I am craving Mexican food. The location is charming and there is an outdoor dining area where pets are allowed should you want to bring your behaved fur child, and the seating inside is cosy with comfortable booths. There is also a bar area, with a good choice of cocktails, beer, wine and margaritas. My last visit I splurged on a couple Don Julio margaritas, yummy. I love that they start you off with warm home made chips, the salsa is always fresh and to die for. Everything I have had here is tasty and did not disappoint, but my favorite is the fish tacos. I've been coming here for 30+years. Half those years were at the temple city location which is now closed Chips and Salsa are so good and they offer a mild sauce too. I had the chicken fajita burrito with melted cheese and green onions. I chose not to have the red sauce on it. My daughter had the flautas plate and the flautas are light and so tasty. The service is speedy and efficient even on a Friday night at 6pm. Ambience is cozy inside and they have seating outside and allow pets at the table. Casa Del Rey (CDR) has been a vital heartbeat of Sierra Madre since Alice and Guillermo Rey opened it up in 2004...but they trace their proud history w/ running local Mexican restaurants since 1972. Based strictly on what my gorgeous bride and I saw and experienced during today's visit, we felt like CDR was mailing in its effort in virtually every aspect of our meal. The sole exception? The effusive greeting and prompt, courteous seating by the "maitre'd," a pretty young blonde woman with vibrant smile (but no visible name tag). She even went out of our way to make sure we averted choosing the restaurant's front-facing SW corner booth, which was apparently dealing with a slight leak as Hurricane Marie transformed Labor Day Weekend into a rainy slog. Here are some of the reasons my bride and I felt underwhelmed by our visit: Glacially Slow Service- Ten minutes for our drink order followed by a 27-minute wait for our two comparatively standard entrees (Leti went w/ chicken fajitas while I tabbed an enchilada bookended by a duo of tacos). Culminated by having to audibly request our check several minutes after takeout boxes had been delivered to our table (even though most servers would've taken tbe hint of the takeout boxes and prepped the bill, accordingly). Poor Optics- Despite a steady succession of diners coming in, we noticed multiple employees including our busboy and waitress seated around near the rear of the restaurant. If they were on their (well-earned!) employee breaks then consider taking them in an area or manner that's not so visible to diners. Because it, coupled with tbe aforementioned slow service, helps fuel the impression that the CDR staff are not -at least not on today- demonstrating a lot of pride in their work. Quality of Food- Leti and I revere Mexican food, have enjoyed it in several states and countries for nearly thirty yrs...but this hasta be the first time we've ever ordered a fajitas entree and not had it delivered tableside in a sizzling skillet, the meat and onions/peppers freshly aflamed via the pairing of super heated cast iron skillet and a splash of "sizzle liquid," usually citrus juice. Instead, my girl received a stingy portion of fajitas that scarcely covered one-third of her plate and MINUS BOTH the "sizzle show" and cast-iron skillet! I've always assumed the extra built-in costs of fajitas entrees is to cover the expense of the cast-iron skillets, along w/ the added time (compounded by every order) ... Soooo, if CDR is removing both the cast-iron skilled and the "sizzle show" then shouldn't the fajitas entree prices be reduced, accordingly? My order of a cheese enchilada bookended by a duo of golden fried tacos gets points for the liberal amount of cheese the chefs used!!! Bravo! But all in all, I'd second my wife's opinion- The FLAVOR of the food is on the bland side. You'll get your money's worth dining at Casa Del Rey. Our $60 tab, including taxes and tip, was quite reasonable. The iconic setting, cozied up thisclose to the majestic purple-brown foothills that arch down over Baldwin Avenue and only a couple blocks from the resplendent looking St. Rita's Catholic Church, make your drive worth the while. But in this day, at least, the quality of food, slooooow rate of service and generally lackluster performance of most of the staff, turned this into a subpar meal. read more

12/29/25 Late Review I'm trying to catch up. We would come here with family often when visiting family. This place is very popular and it always seems to be busy which is a good thing . Every time we come it is great service. I didn't catch our waiters name this time but she was great . Everyone we have had has always been great and professional. We ordered a pitcher of Cadillac Margaritas for us all and it was delicious. I ordered the chicken quesadilla and it was delicious and filling for sure. They also have great chips and salsa . 9/25/2026 We just left this restaurant. The hostess was very unprofessional. I requested a table for two outside. She put me on the list. I let her know that there was en empty table in the corner if we can have that one. She said yes. She also said she had not noticed that it was empty. But when she called us to sit down it was not the same table. She gave the table to another group . I informed her that she said that was going to be our table. She responded by saying it was given to the other group since she cleaned the table that she said was ours first. We felt that she was very rude so we left. We have been to this restaurant many times this was the first time we were treated so disrespectful. I really think you should train this hostess how to treat customers or you might end up loosing some more in the future. read more

The beans were good just how I like it ! They also have happy hour Monday-Friday. With good drinks and many flavors! The Cadillac Margarita was very good and tasty they also have pitchers for drinks too. They have 3 sizes of margaritas as well. The ambiance was very good and gets busy during certain times. My first time trying this restaurant and I loved it. Prices are very economical and they have happy hour Mon-Fri 2pm to 6pm. I ordered the guacamole, enchiladas verde with no cheese with a salad and refried beans. The food was made fresh and made with authentic traditional Mexican ingredients. The staff was so kind and friendly and welcoming. They gave outstanding service and was very accommodating. I will try the nachos next time or the tacos. The staff are attentive, can make recommendations that are excellent for dietary needs, and the food (specially any chicken dishes) have the freshest ingredients! I want to say I come here on a somewhat regular basis , at least once a month we stop in for lunch or dinner. When the food is good it's great, but there's definitely been a few occasions when there's some inconsistencies like the rice being hard or very bland in flavor. It's happened a few times now and is disappointing when it does. Some servers are excellent and more attentive than others can be. So experiences can definitely vary from time to time, but when things go smoothly it's great. I like the patio , the chips and salsa are always tasty. The margaritas are always good. We headed to the restaurant to enjoy some good food after our daughter's SMGSA game, but ended up waiting almost an hour before getting close to being able to eat. The waitress was great but we have no idea why it took so long to get our food from the kitchen. We were hangry.. myself and two kids decided to leave before the food came out. It took WAY too long. My husband stayed back to get the food to go, but guess what?! when we got home and I opened up my order, they forgot to pack my taco in my 2 item plate. While many restaurants get good reviews on its food and service, The entire staff at Casa Del Rey gets an A+ rating on how they react when things get "difficult." This Casa Del Rey really needs a "re-vamp" it's really gone down hill. The chips n salsa are a hit or mess. Sometimes chips are warm sometimes cold. If they do come out warm they taste like oil. The salsa is OK. It's not the best and it's not the worst. The worst thing about this location is the margaritas. The bartenders are so lazy they have pitchers of the margaritas pre-mixed and made and they just pour it in the glass. It's TERRIBLE.
