The great: the staff is amazing, attentive, and always made sure we had everything we needed. 10/10 The good: the Mexican dishes were huge! We had a fried mojarra, carne asada plate, and shrimp cocktail. Portion wise- definitely worth the price. The could be better: The food was a bit bland, and lacked the flavor I am used to when eating Mexican food. Will be trying it one more time. Worth a stop if you're in the area and are craving Mexican food.

This is a really cute and quaint family owned Mexican restaurant with about ten tables inside...very casual, but very comfortable with good service. The staff is very friendly, and the food is really, really good and authentic. I love coming here!

Great spot in Pasadena for burritos especially wet burritos. Big portions and a very filling meal.

This might be the best Mexican food I've had in a long time. Shrimp and fish plate was excellent. Shrimp enchiladas was awesome, highly recommend

Amazing chips & salsa, the service was great and everyone was so nice. We decided to go here on a whim and it was perfect! 10/10!

Located in a small shopping center with limited parking. Don't know why it's so busy, food is 5 out of 10. The menu is overwhelming with too many items in the menu. The service was great and the food didn't take too long. So, the agua fresca is store bought and no salsa fresca for the chips that was a definite bummer for me.

This is the second time I have ordered from here in disappointment. Not from the taste of the food cuz it's good, but from the wrong order. Both times I ordered the mole enchiladas and both times my food has been delivered with only one enchilada in it. This is frustrating because there is only one option when ordering the enchiladas for $17.95 on their menu online. It says that two enchiladas is $17.95. The first time I got my order incorrect. I called and spoke with the lady who told me that I only paid for one enchilada however, I told her it is the only option on the menu. So, now the second time I took a look at the menu online and it says at 17.95 is for two enchiladas, so why do I keep getting one enchilada with my order delivered???!

I was greeted with a big smile and friendly service. El Matodor is a happy, casual neighborhood spot in East Washington Village in Pasadena which is clean and organized. The food was just as the Yelpers noted=OUTSTANDING! I had the Chile Relleno Burrito and it had all the flavors and textures I was craving. It will serve two, or eat half now and the other half later. This will be my go-to spot. I'll be back soon!

I'm so disappointed El Matador hubby and I are regulars here and unfortunately this morning's experience was the saddest. Included our two pictures one of what is on the menu and the description and the second is what arrived at my table. Shame on you.!!!

First time coming here and the food was very good! I wanted to try it for awhile and I was very satisfied! The food was very fresh good quality with good prices as well. For my food I had the salsa and chips, which were so good, chicken tostado, and the sampler platter that was very delicious and I recommend to those who have a party 3 or more for appetizer. Seriously all the food was very Yummy and flavorful. The service was amazing Jaun and Javier out did themselves with the exceptional customer service! They were so amicable the whole entire time and beyond attentive to our table. We had no complaints, everything we asked for or needed was right away! They are very personable with good hearts! I will come back all the time because if that! The restaurant is small and quaint! But cute Inside with enough amount of tables that are comfortable within space! They even have a Tv on to watch sports if you would like! Also, they do have beer, wine, and wine based margaritas they did look very tasty! Overall, I will be back to El Matador... I mean I am a Csun Alumni so the Matador is in me! :) but seriously the food is bomb and the service is amazing! I recommend! Small parking lot area, but it's street parking too! -Marshay D.

Expensive at $1.25 for the side. This is where the 1 star comes. I got an all meat burrito of arrachera. It was a bit salty. Meat was good. Salsa is spicy. BUT THE PORTION. The portion was ridiculous. Smallest burrito I've ever had. Half the burrito was taken up by a roasted onion, which I asked for no onions. $18 is insane. Especially for the portion. $40 spent in total and I'm still hungry. If I ever come back to this place. I wouldn't get any food (maybe a buñelo). Lady cook wasn't the nicest. She probably knew I'd be upset at the portion they gave me. This place is clearly catered to gringos as an "authentic" Mexican restaurant. I hate leaving 1 star, but $18 for a mini burrito is just insane.

This was not the case when we had our dining experience. We got the plate of chile relleno with a beef enchilada, the mole plate and a kids quesadilla with rice and beans. 1. The chile in the chile relleno was soooo tiny, the battered egg was big and fluffy which is why it looks big. The rice was crunchy and had pieces of overcooked rice. The beef on the enchilada was on top of the enchilada NOT inside and it tasted like boiled beef with no flavor! I put it to the side. The inside just had a bit of shredded marble cheese. So disappointed. The beans were ok, restaurant quality, canned flavored. 2. The mole was very sweet and although that's not a bad thing, it still didn't have any kind of authenticity in the flavor it was as though it was just packaged sauce dumped on the chicken. 3. The kids quesadilla has bellpeppers and onions inside! Which was not disclosed on the menu. My kid likes bellpeppers but not the green ones and not in her quesadillas... come on. I had to pick them off. Over all I'm glad I live far away from here because it was really bad quality food. The service was nice and attentive. The ambiance was empty and almost abandoned... and I even went on a weekend.

It really hits the spot when you're craving comforting, flavorful Mexican food. The chips are fresh, the salsa is good, and the menu has offerings that feel more authentic and varied than a lot of other places. I especially appreciate that they have Yucatán cuisine options, which you do not always see at every Mexican restaurant. I am also very fussy with mole and typically do not like it at all, but I actually really enjoy the mole from El Portal. It has been a real eye-opener for me and honestly inspired me to give mole another shot elsewhere. One thing to keep in mind: a lot of the combo plates are smothered in delicious red sauce and plenty of cheese, so if you are not a big cheese person, just be aware before ordering. The enchiladas are good, though sometimes they could use a little more sauce, as the tortillas can come out a bit dry. The margaritas are tasty, but they do feel a little small for the price (Roughly $16 for a 8oz glass?!) The staff are friendly, the vibe is nice, and overall the food is consistently good. The only other heads-up is that some of the tables and booths are pretty small, so it can feel a little cramped in the main dining room. Also, **make sure you get your parking validated**. This is important because if you do not, the parking lot can be extremely expensive. You can also look for street parking on Green Street. After walking up a block found the charming little passage way with some patio seating. It seems like it's a family-owned and operated restaurant as always a great indicator of things to come is the complimentary chips and salsa. They were perfectly thin crispy non-salty and warm, paired with a nice salsa that seems house made but was a little too tomato/ketchupy but by no means bad. I had crispy taco with shredded beef and chili relleno combo. It was pretty good. ($21 )I enjoyed the rice and beans and it was a filling portion. This was actually our second attempt, the first time we showed up on a Saturday afternoon they were closed, despite their online hours saying otherwise. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and came back. Service was okay. The food? Disappointing. The shrimp cocktail was the whole reason we made the trip. It tasted watered down, had no seasoning, no lemon, and still had shell on the shrimp. It genuinely tasted like a pre-made Costco cocktail in red dyed water. The fajita plate (shrimp, beef, and chicken) was passable but nothing special. What really ended it for us were the hidden fees. We ordered the fajita plate $30 (+ taxes) a massive spread with a separate plate of rice and beans and they brought out THREE corn tortillas. THREE... I am Mexican. I have eaten at hundreds of restaurants in my lifetime and have never been given only three tortillas for a plate that size. We asked for more tortillas and were charged $4 with zero warning. It's not about the money it's the principle. The charge was never disclosed. When I brought it up with the owner, Lupita, she was dismissive and couldn't explain the reasoning it's not even homemade tortillas. You can literally buy 90 tortillas for $4 at a grocery store! She took off one of the charges but kept the other $2. Meanwhile, they offer unlimited chips and complimentary salsa without blinking. The inconsistency is baffling. We genuinely wanted to support this family-run restaurant we loved seeing the family come in together. But the disrespect during that conversation made it impossible to leave on good terms. Do yourself a favor and drive about a 1.5 miles down the street to El Metate. Their large shrimp cocktail is $15, is so flavorful, and the staff treats you like family. Their pozole is outstanding too. We found them on our first failed attempt to come here and we'll be going back to them exclusively from now on. We will never return to Lupita's and made it clear to not go there in our community thread with 15K people. Unless you like hidden fees and mediocre tasteless overpriced food then this is your place otherwise...don't come here.
