As soon as I walked into Casa del Rio, I was greeted with a smile and immediately felt welcome. The waitress was incredibly kind and genuine. She seemed genuinely happy to be there, and her positive attitude made the experience even better. I ordered coffee and the taco combo. She made a fresh pot of coffee just for me, brought chips and salsa right away, and even brought me a water without me having to ask. It was the little thoughtful touches like that that really stood out and made the whole meal feel special. The restaurant was clean, and the ambience and environment were very authentic. The parking lot is a little bumpy, but that is honestly the only downside. The food was amazing. The tacos were perfectly crispy--not too hard, just the right amount of crunch. The meat was flavorful and delicious. The chips and salsa were excellent, and the rice and beans tasted authentic and full of flavor. From the service to the food, everything was wonderful. Service is always welcoming and friendly here. Even when we haven't been here in a while, they remember us and greet us warmly. Chips and salsa to start. The salsa is pretty good, and has a nice spice to it. The chips seemed typical tortilla chips. The fajita trio was served up warm and looked really fresh, the colors of everything were very appealing. Tasting the fajitas confirmed that they were light and fresh as they looked. There really wasn't much in the seasoning added, so it really was 'au natural' and simple. It worked well on this dish with the fresh vegetables. The tortillas were typical, nothing special to say about these. I did enjoy the beans and cheese, mashed up nicely and tasted great. Overall, a nice place to stop for Mexican food. I had high hopes when I pulled into the parking lot and saw this authentic Mexican restaurant, but I was a little letdown. I got the tamale and chili relleno platter and it came smothered in an enchilada sauce which tasted like it was out of a can. I expected the chile relleno to be crispy, but it was a little soggy. The tamale was delicious! Stuffed with pork and had a great exterior. Listen, when I first started dating my fiancé, I checked off my mental list his understanding of my love for tacos. A man has to get it in his head that I require at least a street taco every few days, or I get cranky. My guess is that I began to fall in love when I sunk my teeth into a carnitas taco he *brought* to me. I didn't even have to stand in line anywhere. It was presented. I will talk about that experience in another, nearly three years overdue review. First, let me right quick express my disappointment in yet another misbegotten taco travesty. Or, was it a tragedy? Whatever. It was bad. I called twice. Got disconnected. I figured something was wrong with their phone or mine. I show up, and the cashier is on the phone taking an order and then telling the caller that his order will be ready in 10 minutes. I'm thinking, "oh since I'm here it shouldn't be too bad." I notice an inexplicable, vacant lack of desire to take my order. She's slowly writing on the pad, nonchalantly walks back the slip, then plasters on a smile but seems irritated as I explain what I want. I'm not picky. Simple order. I sit down and I'm watching plate after plate of food going to tables. People come in and walk out with their bags. The longest anyone's waiting once they arrive is five or 10 minutes. All told, I'm waiting about 30. I'm not complaining. I'm in a Zoom meeting. My fiancé shows up. He decides he doesn't want the salad I ordered him. I ask if it is too late to take it off, and she rushes to the cook to ask. Then comes back and says that my order will be a bit longer, because there is a problem with it. I'm wondering: no tortillas? No. She pulls my order up off the desk where it's been sitting all this time and takes it to the cooks. And then gets ready to help the next customer and I ask for a refund on my salad. I'm polite, as my mother raised me, but my fiancé is livid. Especially as he looks around and sees there is only one of me. She offers some guacamole. Somehow, she knows what men want. There was no expediting of what should have been an easy-to-rush order, given my extreme inconvenience, of two tacos, a cheese enchilada, rice and beans. I get my order put to the back of the line as if I just placed my order. Just as they were content to let me sit there a half hour on a bench right in front of them without checking to see if my order was ready, I guess they liked seeing me warm it a good 20 minutes more. And to add insult to injury? I got it home and what an insult. Soggy taco shells and mushy meat with no flavor. I do better at home. Crispy shells, flavorful ground meat, sharp cheese. How is this hard??? The enchilada cheese wasn't even fully melted. These Oxnard people make me feel like opening my own Mexican restaurant with my Black self. Do better. read more

Still amazing, everything great and magic happens whenever I go, there's always a table open, even the last one. Great ebb and flow, still relaxed before going inside with the 1970s bumpy dirt parking lot you need to go thru to get to their little asphalt oasis. WOW! I'm so excited to discover this place. I've driven by a thousand times and decided today was the day I stop in. I'm now kicking myself for not coming in sooner. It's a bit off the beaten path as a destination, but I'd certainly make the effort now. I judge all Mexican restaurants by the Chile Verde and it was my luck that they had it on special today. Service was quick and friendly from the very beautiful young lady working here. The decor is fairly basic, but brings me back to the days of my youth were this is a ver classic fun look for a Mexican restaurant. It's very clean as well. I'm told that the owner, Ascensión Hernandez, has been here for decades. He's doing a great job as far as I can tell. The Chile Verde here is very good. The entire presentation was a wonderful trip back to the classic dishes I was used to growing up. Portion size is perfect. Not too little, not too much. The price point is perfect. Absolutely affordable and fair. I need to add this comment. The customer service here is SPECTACULAR!! The young lady here is on top of EVERYTHING. No one is waiting for a thing and she's checking on every customer to make sure they are completely happy. So refreshing in today's customer service environment. I will tell you that I'm going to make this place a regular stop on my travels. I look forward to trying the other tasty treats they have to offer. read more

Laugh all you want at the idea of hard shell ground beef tacos in this age of street tacos being all the rage... and they are wonderful... and so was this! A simple thing like a chili relleno can be the height of mediocrity or outstanding. For me it's the sauce on the relleno which is usually the make or break point. At Casa del Rio I found it outstanding. We were there a bit later than the lunch hour so it was pretty quiet, it's a small place, so it worked out nicely. The chips and salsa, again a simple thing, every place has it, but it can, again, be the height of mediocrity or outstanding. And again it did not disappoint. The order taker/server lady was very nice, and patient as I took some time realizing it was my first time being there and figuring out what I wanted from a large and interesting menu. She came and checked on us a few times too, making sure all was well. And it was! Being here in "the 'nards" I have dozens of choices for "Mexican" food several good choices just a short drive. The environment was ok at best, and the service was ok too, though I dont like them bringing out water and then asking what you want to drink it just adds unnecessary clutter to the table. The worst part is the food, the chicken tasted boiled and underseasoned, they used shredded and what looked like Velveeta cheese instead of the white cheese ive come to know, love, and expect from Mexican restaurants. TLDR; it's the Mexican restaurant version of an inauthentic tourist trap; and it's by design. I admittedly love Mexican food and have had many versions of it across its regional variations. But it's core has always been the rustic, inventive food of poverty. Somehow through the decades it became American-ized and homogenized and when it doesn't look like Tex-mex, people take it as authentic. Almost universally. The result are places like this that focus on easily recognizable items; "taco," "burrito," "tamale," "enchilada," so on and so fourth. All listed in "combo" form to make ordering easily. And what I received was a GROUND BEEF taco, an enchilada, a Chile Relleno, with beans and rice ALL slathered in cheese and heavy sauce. The cheese stuffed pepper? Yup, more cheese on top. The cheese stuffed 'enchilada? Yup more cheese and sauce on top. The kind of dishes where every bite has that sameness to it where nothing is really any different than anything else. To their credit the beans / rice were decent. Now, the people here are very kind and attentive, but they know where they're located and they know their customers. Sitting there in the booth with my wife, we looked around and saw the same thing; all customers are basically the same people; the same attitudes, the same ages, the same ethnicity, the same backgrounds all basically being duped into believing this is Mexican cuisine even more than they likely already were. Who's to blame? Everyone. The business owners found a way to run the business, and it's not their fault; except it is. And the customers continue to eat the indulgent, oversimplified, slathered sameness you get here instead of the inventive rustic cuisine Mexicans are known for. Hadn't been here in 20 years and decided to try it since it seems to always be busy. The service was excellent. The lady that served us was very attentive and friendly. We ordered margaritas that are made with wine instead of tequila and they were okay. The flavor was a little bland for my liking. I ordered a cup of albóndigas and the broth was salty and the meatballs had no flavor. For dinner I had the Chile verde burrito, wet, and it comes with rice and beans on the side. The burrito was okay. I didn't feel like there was much flavor in anything. Beans and rice almost flavorless and the salsa also flavorless but the chips were good, nice and warm out of the fryer. My daughters had the Chile rellano which she said was awful and a carne asada burrito that was okay. The food looked good but was absent of flavor. The place is old but very clean and seamed to be busy with regular customers. Since moving here we've been looking for a place like this. Let's face it, I've had better Mexican food in quite a few places in town and off the avenue. However, this place has very solid food and is like that old place you've been going to forever. Service was very efficient. Price was definitely on the reasonable scale.
