A nice relaxed place to have lunch and enjoy the beautiful Ventura weather. Big parking lot and easily accessible from Thompson. There were a few diners on a Wednesday afternoon. They seated us at a cozy booth and we ordered a chile verde enchilada with a chicken tamale plus birria taco combo. The refried bean reputation is well deserved. Thick with just enough seasoning. Rice is good but nothing epic. The chips and salsa are served up fresh with the chips just fried and hot. Very very good. You can taste the tartness of the tomatillo in the chile verde which makes a nice contrast to the enchilada sauce which it is smothered in along with the cheese. Tamale also really good. Never had it served with sauce and cheese before. It would have been outstanding without the topping. Birria and consommé were very salty yet without much of a dominant flavor. The taco was also very greasy and I could only finish about half. Would return but skip the birria and ask for less sauce / cheese. read more

Looks aren't everything! Despite this being the busiest restaurant it was my least favorite. Went to all the Mexican restaurants in the area and got a simple burrito. This one was weakest by quite a noticeable margin. Tasted.... Like the bottom of the bean tray? Just, kind of burnt or old. Smelled a little like a fryer. Ignore the looks of the other restaurants I'd highly recommend La Tapatia over this place. However if you need a place for a family I think this has the best atmosphere. read more

This is a great place to come if you want to be IGNORED. Walked in, the lady said "sit anywhere, I'll follow you." She didn't. Instead she helped the next person in the door and then fiddled with her paperwork. Almost ten minutes later I got up to fetch menus so we could see about ordering. She tried to shoo me away. Eventually a waitress came by and we got beverages. When she delivered them she said she'd give us time and walked away, ignoring me when I said "ready!" Another ten minutes and we never laid eyes on her again. In our entire time there there were only two other parties and the to-go order that came in behind us. Left some cash on the table and left. We stopped in after a day at the fairgrounds. We were seated right away... chips, salsa and bean dipped served while we reviewed the menu. The salsa was delicious, nice and chunky and had a good flavor. The bean dip was outstanding, seemed to have some chorizo in it as they had a slight spice to it, and tasted great. I ordered the fajita trio and it was really good. The steak, chicken and shrimp all had some nice flavor and sauteed with mixed vegetables. The beans served with the dinner were awesome. They were hearty and mashed perfectly creamy at the same time. Someone else at our table ordered shredded beef as their meat selection and said it was super bland and wouldn't recommend it. Service, as some have mentioned before, wasn't bad, just marginal with lots of time in between visits even after offering to bring us more chips and water. Overall, great food here! read more

Wow. I sure wish I'd tried this restaurant before. It is incredible. Plenty of parking, outdoor tables as well as indoor, a very nice banquet room, but most important, wonderful food. I had the three cheese birria tacos with shredded beef, and my wife had her favorite combination plate of shredded beef taco and cheese enchilada. The tortilla chips were made in-house and the salsa was perfect, not too hot and not like Pace. Both meals came with sides of refried beans and Mexican rice and they were equally stand out. I had a regular margarita and found out later it was part of a daily "happy hour" special. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Without question, this is one of Ventura's finest Mexican restaurants. read more

You know I've been very loyal this place for over 30 almost 40 years and I always got the number 13 back in the days every time two chilly Verde burritos, cheese, enchilada beans and rice sometimes a bean burrito and it was my favorite Mexican food place. nobody else liked it but me.. lately I had a visit back in December 2024, which wasn't great Food. I told myself I'm done with them however I was just there last week and gave it a shot again and this time I'm done with it.. The favorite beans didn't taste like they used to taste. I asked for two chili Verde burritos. I get one chili Verde burrito with beans inside of it. How does that happen? Did I tell the server no I'm just done with it way overpriced now no lettuce on the enchilada like in the past. The salsa and chips were probably the best thing there was the water but I'm not gonna go in detail. It's definitely like it was years ago and I don't really expect it to be with all the change over and people moving on and changing of the garden all but you would think something like Corrales next-door kept their burritos true to form after 30 years themselves so why can't this place do it time to find a new place for me so long friend? read more

Delicious Mexican food! They have great lunch deals during the weekdays which is nice is you want to grab a quick bite and a nice margarita. I had their chilaquiles and wow they were so good. They had the green ones which are the best and they came with the right amount of cotija cheese and sour cream. It came with rice and beans and was very filling. Service is very friendly and quick. The rice and beans were amazing with the pastor burrito! I normally would focus on the burrito, but I was very impressed with the rice and beans. They had really good texture and were really delicious. My husband thinks they just a lot lard in them. That is likely, and they were used to very good effect. So we wait like 20 min nothing ..Can't find our waitress so we flag down another waiter to get more chips and salsa ...Finally he brings it for us ...Now it's been 40 min now we r out of water. ...Finally it's been almost an hour she shows and says kitchen is backed up i said i would like to pay for the chips and salsa and just go some where else ...She said our food is almost there it's almost there ...She finally brought more water and the 2 tacos showed and my gals enchilada her plate is super hot and food was not hott at all. ...i paid 15 dollars for 2 tiny street tacos ..The price the food and the service was horrible....There's no way this place is managed or owned by the same people that we used to go see for decades We willl never go back there what a huge disappointment...I absolutely would not recommend this place anymore for anyone read more

We love their homemade baja chicken el pollo de baja... half a chicken, it is so tender and very tasty! Have not had better. Also their albondigas soup is the best! So disappointed tonight's dinner at Casa De Soria. I've only been there for lunch on weekdays and it was always good. My beef tostada was not good, just bits of shredded lettuce and shredded cheese and about 6 little pieces of meat. There was so little rice/beans I had to look in there to see if any. Came here on a Sunday around 3:30pm and it wasn't busy. Service at the start was good (getting first round of drinks and food order) but then service after that was pretty non-existent. One refill and one quick check in from the waiter 20 minutes after our food was served. Plenty of staff in the dining room. Food was wonderful. I think a three or four is fair for our visit. Feels authentic like a visit to Mexico. Service sweet but mind bogglingly slow so not a quick eat. Happy with chips / salsa, margaritas are quite good, spacious casual location. Loved the blue corn tortillas and the shrimp tacos, while good, needed guac and chipotle flavor added. Everyone seemed happy with the meals but the non pork items ( tostada and seafood items) seemed like they needed a little love / kick of flavor. I heard Casa De Soria went downhill. I didn't believe it so I went Friday. Sad to say probably my last time. Got there around 5:30. Wasn't real busy we were seated quickly they took our drink order. I wanted water and who I was with wanted soda. We are not drinkers. Came with drinks, chips and salsa. We ordered 1 chicken Chimichanga and I ordered 1 carne asada Chimichanga. When the order arrived it looked good. Mine had no flavor and it took me several bites to even realize it was pork. The other Chimichanga was to be chicken but it was beef. When the waiter stopped by we informed him it was incorrect. He offered to correct the order but we were more than halfway finished. If he would have checked on us sooner we would have returned it. They did refill the soda didn't offer to refill my water. When they cleared the table we were expecting our check. We waited 5-10 minutes nothing and didn't even see our waiter. We asked another waitress for our check. She brought it over put it on the table didn't say anything and walked off. Then our waiter walked by didn't stop. Guess the wait staff no longer take your credit card anymore the check said scan this QR code to pay. First thing to pop up was tip. Of course it starts at 15%. Tipping is out of control. Service sucked and food sucked. We tipped didn't want to but I wasn't paying. At least as of now they are not charging a credit card fee. Between poor service, bad food, credit card fees and everyone wonders why restaurants/businesses are closing. It was complete waste of money. read more

Two completely different egg preparations in two different flavorful sauces separated by a mound of the BEST refried beans I have ever had! Seriously! Had to come back again! It's only available on Saturdays til it runs out. It's red and it's not super spicy like some. The meat is tender and the sauce is epic. Hands down the BEST refried beans I have ever had. I dream about their refried beans. Service was excellent. Ambiance is authentic and inviting. Nice pour on the wine. I would say my only "complaint" is that my teen just want a shredded chicken and bean burrito...the chicken was in a sauce with some veggies (so he didn't eat much) and the rice also has veggies in it. Won't detour us from eating at this amazing restaurant again but I will not be ordering the burrito and rice again (at least for my son). The chips were very good, as was the salsa. A good sized portions. Refried beans were good, I just can't say it's the best I have tasted. Service was on par. My waiter, I felt, didn't check up on me, and when I asked for a napkin, I got one measly napkin. You need napkins eating the greasy refried beans. The place was old school old; I doubt they have renovated recently. Still works, because at its core, it's an old school old style Mexican restaurant. I haven't been here in about 10 years.
