I can't believe I'm dropping our favorite lunch spot to a 4 but after last week's experience I have no other option. Now I'll start by saying that we were treating my inlaws to a day in st. augustine the way we enjoy it and it was a special day to celebrate their bdays completely our treat. So to bring them to Casa Maya was a must for lunch. We arrived around 12:30 and there were only two other diners seated outside and 4 at the outdoor bar. Our server was excellent...hands down he saved this experience for us. 3 of us ordered the top shelf margarita and one ordered a tom collins. Then we decided on our tacos...get the shrimp taco even if you get a mix of tacos this one is still the best in my opinion. I also ordered one cochinita and it was just ok...not as flavorful as the shrimp. We also ordered guacamole and salsa and both were fresh and tasty. So why 4 stars? We did not receive our margaritas (ordered first) until our meal came out...15-20 minutes after we arrived. Our server filled our water 3 times before the bartender could make 3 margaritas with only 6 other people in the entire place. It was obvious that making drinks wasn't as important as whatever else he was doing. The frustration showed on our server's face each time he came back to apologize. When you are spending over $130 for lunch you expect great service (which we did get from our server...but not from the bar). read more

We are visiting from the west coast. We're very particular about our Mexican food. Our server was very good, answered our questions and was very attentive to what we needed. My wife had the vegan option green burrito, I had the Carne asada, both were delicious. I would recommend this place, hands down. Great food, great vibe, great service. read more

Found this spot while wandering St. Augustine on foot and there was no wait. We were here on Memorial Day, and the whole town was busy. It was dinner for three, my husband,my 9 year old son and myself. The service was friendly and attentive, however my food was not great. My son had a steak quesadilla, which was from the adult menu, as their is no kids menu. My son was happy with his quesadilla. My husband ordered the paella and he was happy with it, he was happy with the amount of seafood in the paella and was overall happy with his dish. I ordered the flank steak and asked for it to be medium rare. My steak was not medium rare, definitely a medium, however it was seasoned well and was not over cooked. My sides however were not good. It was supposed to come with mashed potatoes and broccoli, I got the broccoli but instead of mashed potatoes I received frozen potato chunks which had been deep fried and seasoned so badly they were inedible. They were incredibly salty and garlicky. Not fresh garlic, just like a ton of garlic salt, so much so that it was bitter, and again, terrible salty. There was some parsley as well. No mention was made as to why they substituted the frozen over seasoned potatoes for the mashed potatoes on the menu, my waiter, though friendly, didn't even mention it. My broccoli was cooked well, so not over cooked, but also seasoned with the same over abundant garlic salt that was on my potatos. I had the house made sangria and it was okay, my husband had a local St. Augustine lager and he was happy with it. So overall our bill was roughly $140.00 including tip, and I was served frozen potatoes. The patio is pretty and shaded so that was nice. The water that was provided had a horrible favor of sulfur, just tasted rotten. read more

Great food. I had the ropa vieja that was fantastic. The tables outside were close together and not very clean. A wet napkin came up black. The server tried to blame the cleaning solution they used. If you don't mind crowds and a lax hygiene level, this place has the best food in St Augustine. At these prices I would expect a cleaner environment. read more

We have been to Casa Maya twice before and enjoyed the atmosphere, drinks, service and quality of the food. Came back this week for dinner around 5pm and the drinks, service and food was still good. The atmosphere on the covered outdoor patio was still relaxing and comfortable...that is until a two man construction crew arrived in the middle of dinner to repair two table tops. The drilling, grinding and welding ruined the peaceful quality of the restaurant. They tried to cover the work area with blankets but the sparks from welding were flying up in the air. I realize repair work needs to get done but when the dining area doesn't open until 4pm why can't they do construction in the morning or early afternoon before the restaurant opens????? Shame on management for not accommodating their dining patrons rather then a construction crew read more

I'm okay with prices being higher considering the rent in that area, but Cummon, throw a little love into the food. This was the second time I visited Casa Maya. I was hoping that my second go around was going to be as good as my first, and they didn't disappoint! The first time I paid a call to this establishment was June of 2017, and promised myself that my next time in St. Augustine I would definitely be back. June of 2017 was warm, while last night was a bit chilly, but the cool night didn't put a damper on the evening at all. Both visits I opted to sit at the main outside bar, there are two bars outside, and somehow I was even able to get the same seat! The ambiance of the outside bar/patio area is perfect, just enough light to be able to read the menu easily, but not so bright to feel as if you are being overwhelmed by it. If you are on a date, it's the perfect atmosphere. I was also lucky enough to have the same bartenders as my previous visit! The bar staff is lively and engaging. They have a quick wit, talkative, make you feel right at home, but are also very good at their jobs, making drinks. As soon as I sat down, I was greeted by one of the bartenders, and she gave me plenty of time to decide on what I wanted to drink. (I'm one of those people that can take some time to decide.) I decided for a Mojito and was glad I did, it was the perfect combination of tangy and sweet, with just the right amount of mint. As I said, the bartenders know their stuff. I started off with the white wine mussels, and it was so good! The mussels were perfectly cooked, and the garlic white wine sauce didn't overwhelm. It came with toasted garlic bread pieces that were just yummy. For dinner I had the Seafood Paella, which was incredibly good; clams, mussels, scallops, chicken, fish, and crab legs, all seasoned wonderfully, served atop perfectly cooked rice. Throughout my stay, the bartenders were very attentive, making sure I was well taken care of. I felt bad for them, it was a bit on the chilly side outside, I had a jacket on and I was a bit cold, but they never lost their sense of humor, which says a lot as your fingers start to numb up making cold drinks on a chilly evening. I will definitely be back again, if only to grab just a drink or two, the bartenders are just that good! (Who am I kidding, I'll have to eat also, I want to try out the rest of the menu.) read more

I ordered a $12 margarita and it got served in a martini glass and it was luke warm, definitely was not impressed with the drink. Came here on a Saturday night and it did not disappoint. I had the paella and it was absolutely to die for. Worth every penny! Packed with flavor, protein to include scallops, shrimp, sausage, chicken and fish, AND to top it off - a hefty king crab cluster; I died and went to paella heaven. My husband was definitely envious. He had the hangar steak which was great but no match for my dish! I slopped up every last spoonful of goodness and used the perfectly crisp slices of bread to soak up the broth. It was a special night (just passing through) and they took upon themselves to make our night perfect with letting us sit upstairs under the beautiful lights, and enjoy ourselves with plenty of good and drinks. Sat outside...it was a little warm but over head fans helped. We started with chips and salsa. At $6.95 I figured it would be a large basket of chips. What we got was 6 fired corn tortillas with a small bowl of salsa. The salsa was amazing! It was a way different for chips and salsa. One thing i didnt like was they charge for a refill on both. For our main dish i had the skirt steak tacos with pork rinds. You get three with an avocado sauce and cheese. They were amazing. I wasnt sure until i took my first bite and it was very very good. My wife had mahi tacos and she said they were the best she ever tasted. All in all the food was amazing, the service impeccable and atmosphere was great. I've seen good reviews here but my experience says otherwise. Margaritas from bar: you can make better ones at home, seriously. Ropa Vieja: EXTREMELY dry and tasteless. For a $20+ dish you would think you can expect more. A dozen oysters: VERY disappointing , we could tell they weren't fresh. Green burrito with skirt steak: fine, but for that price I've had better. The old town makes money from tourists but come on, so much money for a BELOW average meal? Definitely take your money somewhere else if you want good food. read more

Overall favorite thing was the ambience, outdoor seating area and live acoustic guitar music. Food: I had the Carnitas tacos which was good overall. The avocados in it were very fresh but compared to other tacos I've had in the past didn't have all the full flavors but adding in the hot sauce and lime brought out more variety in flavoring. My favorite was the chips and salsa appetizer since the chips are freshly baked and huge in size. The salsa dip it comes with is great and has a good mild spice to it. read more

The quality of food is not worth the money. They charge you almost $5 for chips and salsa which I think they count of many chips they give you. For the prices they charge the chips should be free. The rice included is about 1/4 of a cup. The fajita meats were boiled and not grilled. Also if you split meats they charge you more and do not tell you there is an up charge. Over Rated. Dont know how some people gave them 3, 4 or 5 stars. read more
