So, my review is based on customer service alone as I did not get a chance to try their food and after the atrocious treatment that my family received, I wouldn't eat there food as some of their staff appear to be the type that would mess with your food such as their absolutely disrespectful bartender. He's the male figure that has tats all the way up his neck and is super skinny. I had a group of 12 and yes I understand the difficulty seating a group of 12. I called the restaurant first and was told that it should only be a 30-45 min wait. That was fine for my group and would still make things a little tight for some of us to make the Night of Lights trolley tour that we had reserved times to attend. We were a two minute walk away. When were made it to this place we were told that they misquoted us and that it was going to be more like and hour and a half to two hour wait. Now, this is after my group was completely refused at Prohibition Kitchen, stating that they were not taking groups any larger than an 8 and called a few other restaurants near by that had long waits as well. I made the decision for my group for us to break up into 3 parties of four instead and explained to the hosts that we would that their first four tables anywhere in the restaurant. At this point my group was willing to separate to make seating happen. We asked how long it would take then. We were told that it would take about an hour. We said fine and asked the hostess if they would take our names and we were told no that they don't take names anymore and we would have to stay by the hostess podium if we wanted seated. What restaurant doesn't keep a name list so that they are able to at least vocally call the next group? If the group you call does not show up, you move to the next name and cross out the previous group for their failure to be attentive. My group was standing there and waiting. Yes, we were complaining as that is our right, but we were complaining to each other not anyone else as we were all hungry and I'm 8 months pregnant and very hungry. We thought the fact we were quoted the wrong time over the phone was a bit annoying. The lobby was small and they expected us to wait right there for any table to become available was silly as the hostess could have written our names down and permitted us to wait outside, but she was only following instructions as she was told, due to issues the night before, when they took names and phone numbers, that people were not showing up, they were no longer keeping a list to be able to call out to people as they were waiting. One of our group members, that was in town from Australia, was sitting at the end chair of the bar, closest to the restaurant door, was told by the horrendous bartender that if she was not going to buy a drink she had to move off the barstool. The bartender also decided to open his mouth and berate our group for complaining. Please avoid this place as there are much better choices in the area that will take a large group and have phenomenal customer service. Go to Mojo BBQ, make a reservation with Columbia, or talk to Collage Restaurant who food is to absolutely die for. The only reason this place is getting any stars from me is so that I am able to write a review. I'm glad that I was able to warn other potential customers on my way out of the restaurant so that they would walk away and they did. Here's hoping many more do as well. read more

I have such fond memories of this place but it has really declined in the last year. The sign outside says see hostess inside. She was out back chatting with other staff. I had to find my party by myself....walked in every room before I found them. Our waiter was nice to begin with, but forgetful. He forgot the appetizer and then took a tone with us when asked where it was as he was serving the entree. He did a couple of nice things like an extra fajita shell and a to go drink which is why 2 stars instead of one. The yummy juice bar is gone now. The food was just OK for the prices they charge. We won't eat here again. We've been disappointed the last couple of visits. read more

If I could give this place a 0 stars I would. Food is horrible, service was terrible and they force 18% gratuity on you. Worst customer service experience of my life at any restaurant. The manager should actually be fired for how rude and unhelpful and antagonistic he was. We went for dinner and the server was nice enough but not at all on top of it. I had to get up and get our own cutlery and napkins. The food comes and it is awful - I could get a better quesadilla at Taco Bell. Then the bill comes and there's a forced 18% gratuity (because we had more than 4 people?!? We had 5?) and we've been way overcharged for margaritas. I asked to speak to manager about the gratuity - I had no problem paying a gratuity based on service and based on a portion of bill - our food bill was only $130 and I wasn't happy about paying 18% on overpriced drinks as well. He could not have been more rude. Told me he didn't care what I felt, I had to pay it and then continued to argue ridiculous things with me "oh would you like to also negotiate the price of your meals too". Like what kind of manager speakers to a customer like that?? This guy should 100% be fired. I travel and eat out all the time and I have never had a worse restaurant experience. read more

Great restaurant. One of a kind cuisine--owners are from the Yukatan and have created a menu unlike the normal spanish or mexican flavors experienced in normal eateries. I am not a fan of traditional american-mexican food so when this was recommended, I was hesitant. I enjoy quality, freshness and an experience that is unique. I enjoy cooking and it's always a pleasure to have a dining experience equal to or better than what I can make at home. We dined upstairs and didn't wait long and had great service. I was hesitant when seated because the table and chairs were very spartan and somewhat inexpensive. We had a bottle of wine, two appetizers, 2 of the specials and ended with desert (we were obviously on vacation). The bill was about 1/2 of what we pay to dine at home and the food was fresh and unique--not something I have made at home. If you are looking for cheese, beans and flour tortillas to fill your belly with fodder, then this is not what are looking for--you need Taco Bell. If you are looking for a gourmet, spanish flair to a well portioned and well priced experience, then Casa Maya will not disappoint. read more

Just told we had to wait without being offered or sent to the bar. Owners running around doing stuff the staff shoulld be doing instead of managing customers. Lovely patio but only using a third of the area with an abandoned outdoor bar being used as a storage space for kegs and stuff.. Food was good once arrived, portions on the medium to small side. I was pretty excited about this place, I had read reviews and the menu looked good. However, the menu must have changed or what is available online is the lunch menu? Anyway, my partner and I went and were told that there would be a 10 minute wait, which is fine, we took that time to look at the menu and that is when we realized it was different. We weren't feeling extremely hungry so paying $50 seemed excessive. We decided we were going to leave. At that time the hostess comes back to say that the table is ready. We tell her that we are going to take a look at some of the other restaurants. She snatches the menus from our hands, and says "This is AUTHENTIC MEXICAN food. Some people just can't handle that." and slams the menus down on her podium. We were so shocked! We just kept walking. I just don't understand what would cause such a reaction, I didn't think we were really putting her out by waiting 10 minutes and then deciding we were going somewhere else. Absolutely one of the worst experiences in history of eating. Came in with a party of five. From the start, the service was poor. Walked in, no employee to be seen to seat or greet us. When one did show up, another followed with her drink, that she stirred while awkwardly telling us there was a party inside and there was one table and outdoor seating. While being walked confusingly by two staff members, the bar tables scattered with laptops, paperwork etc. Office in the dining room is a little confusing. After an extended wait on drinks/appetizers, we ordered something relative of a fondue disaster. The cheese was half-melted, thick, and greasy. It had obviously been microwaved. It was served with a few raw tortillas and a thin salsa. Together, it tasted like spaghetti-o's in a flour tortilla. Gross. I ordered the Pakal Shrimp as did another guest I was with. The shrimp were chewy, grossly over cooked with the tail on. So in addition to having to eat chewy shrimp, i had to saw through the tails to remove them. The portions were relative to the price. Aside from the overwhelming flavor of bottled barbecue sauce, undercooked rice. The plate resembled something between a soup, an etouffee, and a paella. I promptly returned the plate as I found it inedible. I asked for whatever was quickest as everyone else was attempting to eat what they had ordered (I tried everything, nothing was good). They brought me out a tasteless pulled pork with a watery ramekin of black beans and a spoonful of bland rice. I had to ask for tortillas. Aside from the food, it was clean and well kept up with, but it was poorly lit where we were sat, and during dinner there was the constant sound of a dumpster/trash compactor going the entire time. I would of much rather of listened to the dining room inside then a dumpster. While we sat, we watched the dishwasher carry dirty dishes (pans, plates, everything) through the outdoor seating area. If this wasn't enough. All the members of the kitchen staff were out on the back patio smoking cigarettes while we were eating. When we received the check, they had still charged us for the 20 dollar shrimp dish that I sent back, instead of charging me for what I actually ate which, all in all, wasn't worth paying for. 140$ for dinner for five, I would rather have gone for fast food than go there. The server, was polite, but was completely out of his element with dealing with my complaint. Service was slow for us being the only visible table other than the "party" upstairs. Will not go back. The food is fantastic! But I could not give it 5 stars because the service sucks. We went twice: 1st for dinner & then for breakfast. We were seated promptly but it took over 20 minutes to get someone to acknowledge us & that's because we got up the table & ask the hostess. There were several waiters but they seemed to purposely ignore us. The same thing happened at breakfast. We were puzzled & did not understand why we were ignored. I called in an order tonight, it was wrong so I called to get it fixed and when I asked to speak to a manager, Guillermo yelled at me who stated he was the owner (he also yelled the spelling of his name because I didn't hear his name the first time I asked) as he told me he would not re-do my order but I could drive back 20 miles,pay to park and get my slices of avocado and mushrooms,that were missing from 2 of the wraps I ordered. I had just spent over $50 at Casa Maya and you would think an owner wouldn't be so disrespectful to a customer. I cannot believe I was just screamed at because they messed up 2 of the 3 meals I got as a togo order. There are few actual Mexican restaurants in or near Jacksonville. Most Americans seem to think Tex-Mex food like "la napolera" for example is authentic Mexican food. However, if you have ever had traditional authentic Mexican food you know better. The food here is outstanding. They serve very traditional Mexican dishes. Don't get flour tortillas though, they give you that option but flour tortillas is a U.S. thing, you have to go with the corn tortillas if you want to experience the dishes at their best. Chose this restaurant based on other reviews. The homemade guacamole was delicious but the store-bought chips were cheap. My daughter and I both ordered the Pakal Shrimp which was out of this world. However, the server was very surely and acted as if it was too much for her to do. She brought me the check, and I moment later brought me another check because we had the "wrong one." The difference? She forgot to add 2 sodas. Seriously? For the price of dinner for two, soda should be free. Good food...sit outdoors on the upper balcony...pretty bad customer service. read more

Disappointed. This used to be one of our favorite lunch joints in St Augustine. We have gone there every year for a number of years. However, they have changed the menu and it is now much less interesting. Also, the prices are misleading. Tacos are listed for prices around $5 but when you order you are told that there is a minimum of 3 ($15 +/-). The food we ordered was all good and the service was good as well. I was very disappointed from the beginning to the end. There were many favorable reviews, so I thought we had a safe bet and couldn't go wrong. On entering the establishment, I saw that it was a beautiful old house, I was excited for a pleasant experience. The problems started with being supplied the breakfast menus at 3:30PM. It looked as if they just had a very small menu, but I overheard people ordering items that weren't on our menu. I asked the server if there was another menu, and she seemed put-out to have to get us the lunch menus. As the meal progressed, I learned that she was put-out about most things (request for water, splitting the check in two for a party of 6, etc). Every request came with an attitude. One of my favorite issues the server had was when we wanted to share an order of Tacos, she insisted that it was a minimum of three tacos per person (at $7.00 each). I explained that I wanted to order three tacos, but my daughter only wanted an appraiser. She seemed frustrated that we each weren't going to order $21.00 worth of Tacos. The prices for were very high for the mediocre food, and a 20% tip was included (Hence the issue with sharing a meal). I always tip at least 20%, but this service was very sub-par. Well if your into octopus or adventurous enough to want to try it they have the most tender, succulent octopus ceviche your ever going to put in your mouth. We made our reservations online via Open Table. We arrived a few minutes early, and they brought us to a table right away. We were seated in the upper balcony upstairs, which was a nice little view of the street, and the weather was absolutely perfect. Our waiter was very efficient and friendly. We ordered margaritas (I ordered the Black Widow, which was DELICIOUS - very smooth blackberry infused margarita). Our dinners came fairly soon after. I ordered the Cochinita Pibil. The individual ingredients were all very well done and tasty - the rice, plantains, black beans, and pulled pork. The spices and proportions were fabulous, full of flavor but not overly powerful. Definitely one of the better Latin American cuisines I've ever had. It's a little on the pricier side, but definitely recommended if you are looking for a great Latin American meal while you're in St. Augustine. Not horrible, but $15? The chips and Salsa are not free or with free refills. I don't mind paying good money for great food. But, needless to say, we were not impressed in the slightest. Fantastic lunch at Casa Maya. Started with the salsa and guacamole; both were really good. Cool atmosphere inside with good music playing not too loud. Real Star was our main courses. I had the "fresh catch" fish tacos, which was red snapper, homemade pico de gallo and chipotle mayo. They also brought some super hot hot sauce; only needed a drop to make the fish tacos super hot. My wife got a vegetable burrito, which I tried and was great. Very flavorful sauce on top and really big portion size. If I was a local this would be one of my go to restaurants. Food: son said the steak was the best he has ever had, ceviche was a little over powered by red onion and could use more lime juice, salsa was nicely spiced.
