I've eat here many times (and reviewed it several times) and for a small town in northern Wisconsin the food and service is decent. While the cuisine is standard Americanized Mexican food, it fills an important niche in our neck of the woods, and I will continue to patronize them whenever I am in town and hankering for a burrito or something like that. read more

The reviews here seem to be very misleading... Service was prompt and friendly. However the food is a different story. I think it may be that the standards are alittle bit lower in these parts, but everything just tasted bland. I ordered table side guac, which is like $12 and some change, but it wasn't made table-side... it also tasted bland and the avocados tasted like they were in a fridge that was too cold. I make guac very often that I know when an avocado might be alittle too cold... it had that grainy texture and taste. I also ordered the steak fajitas... the steak was not really even steak, but probably more what I would describe as overly done sliced or shredded beef strips. I've had better steak at Chipotle. It was also bland. There was no flavor at all. The only flavors you got were from adding the beans and sour cream to your fajita. It was also really tough. I was pretty disappointed, because for some reason, I pictured a sizzling platter arriving at my table, and guac made at the table as well. I then ordered flan for dessert. It was also pretty disappointing. The flan it self might have been okay, but they drizzled chocolate on top of the flan, which really masked the flavor of the flan and made me wonder what were they trying to achieve by adding the chocolate. The caramel syrup is already sweet... You can also tell whoever makes the flan does not know how to make flan. Flan should be smooth and silky. It can be light or also more rich and velvety. This one had so many air bubbles that it gave me such a feeling of concern with every bite. Either the water from the water bath used in the oven spilled over or the temperature was too high that it caused the flan to boil. And then the final straw was the electronic fee... I'm not from around here but is this normal? It makes me wonder if this is something they should disclose or tack on to their food prices... Yeah I just did not feel it with this restaurant... Probably won't be back... It doesn't mean the food isnt good, but it's just my opinion and I've been to several restaurants... read more

This is our Tuesday spot, we start off with taco Tuesday, add the spicey pork burrito combo, some drinks and it's a great meal for two. The staff are kind hard working people, good sense of humor and of course very respectful. The interior design, with festive music to match just adds to the Mexican ambiance. This is a hidden gem in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. We were all delightfully surprised by the food. Homemade salsa, fresh chips, and colorful decor started us off happy. We started with some queso and the Mexican brushetta. I could have eaten this as my meal. Fresh avocado filled with grilled shrimp, cheese and a bit of southwest sauce. I will eat this again somewhere. I ordered the steak relleno served with rice. This dish was a flavor pleaser. The roasted poblano pepper added just the right balance to the steak and the sauce. John William has never asked for a Christmas present. It has just been in the last couple of years that he is even in to opening, decorating, countdown, etc. In years past I would ask him what he wanted for Christmas and he would reply "no thanks". This year I asked and he said "a green hoodie from Casa Mexicana" Being a long time customer of Casa Mexicana, I ran right to the restaurant to peruse the merchandise. Unfortunately there were no green hoodies in his size. I took a chance and spoke with the owner, Alejandro. I explained the situation, and John's Christmas wish. He told me that he would do his best to get one made for us. He did warn me that the screen printer they use can be a little slow. He took my phone number and told me he would keep me updated. As we got closer to Christmas I figured that I would have to find an alternative to the one present John had ever requested. Then, on the weekend before Christmas, Alejandro called. Not only had they gotten the sweatshirt made, they had printed John William's name on the back! I am so grateful for this act of kindness. When I asked for help, Alejandro could have said no, been too busy or just brushed me off. After all, it was one kid asking for one sweatshirt. But he didn't! This may not seem like much to some people, but it meant the world to me! I cannot wait to see JW open his present in three days (yes, he is counting down). Thanks Alejandro! Went there for dinner. Ordered carne asada. The meat was literally so tough I could not cut it with a steakknife - and I tried several times. Like shoe leather. Horrible. In addition they add a "3.5% electronic fee" onto the bill (there were two of us and we paid cash). If I would have known about that extra 3.5% we would not have stayed. I don't know why people accept these extra fees. We won't go back. I don't know how they stay in business. read more

I went out shopping after work and stopped at a few stores. I planned on stopping in and had such a taste for Mexican but I shopped so long that I figured they would be closed. I saw people inside eating and it was 8:45 and they close at 9:00 but I ran in and asked if was too late and he happily said no if I would be seated. In the bar area. So that's what I did. My service was excellent even though I assumed everyone thought to themselves...REALLY, 15 minutes before we close. I ordered, ate and left happy. Got take out for lunch today and wow was it fast ! We called and arrived 8 mins later. Someone came out to the car and asked for our name and our order was ready. Super fast and efficient service. We got chips and salsa with our order too. Prices were very reasonable. We got the carne Asada tacos and chicken chimichanga. Both were way better than expected for a Mexican restaurant in Rhinelander. The food was hot, fresh, and flavorful. Carne Asada tacos came with 4 corn tortilla tacos, rice, and beans. You have choice of toppings on the tacos too. Chicken chimichanga had delicious shredded chicken inside along with some veggies. Awesome ! It came with lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, pico de Gallo, and rice & beans. The chimichanga was covered with a magnificent cheese sauce as well. Absolutely phenomenal service! My family and I found this hidden gem today while out shopping. My husband is in a wheelchair, and they saw him getting out of our handicapped van, and immediately began making sure my husbands needs were met. They stood ready and opened the doors for him, arranged the table for his chair to easily pull up to the table. It is such an amazing thing when you find a business so handicap accessible and accommodating. The food was top notch! Not one single complaint- nothing but great things to say about the food. I was pretty excited when I realized my sweet little home-town had it's very one AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurant!! Oh yummy! Well...not so much. They need to revamp their menu!! It's just too large and that makes it cumbersome to navigate! The guacamole is fantastic!! I'd go there just for that and a margarita! The three of us FINALLY found something to order and none of us were impressed. Presentation left a lot to be desired and it was bland. The next time I go I will be prepared though. I truly love good AUTHENTIC Mexican cuisine and was excited to try this place out since their signage specifically states authentic. Well... ...not sure authentic to where. Sadly, they leave a lot to be desired for a moderately expensive place. They have a huge menu which took a while to dig through. I ordered my favorite Mexican dish...Carne asada and was BEYOND disappointed. I've had better steak at a mom/pop diner. It was about 1/4" inch thick and too tough to even attempt to eat it. Of COURSE it was not medium rare as I'd requested when asked. Their normal side accompaniments of rice and beans were about Taco Bell fare in flavor. I was just so disappointed. If you're going to market yourself as authentic then at least TRY! Just doing a google search for carne asada comes up with "Carne asada is grilled and sliced beef, usually skirt steak, or a flank steak". THAT'S the authentic description for this dish. If you're going to offer it make it right. I didn't expect a very large steak portion for the price they charged but I didn't expect them to use a cheap diner breakfast steak either. Other items my party ordered were met with "meh". I think it's important to say that they do have very good guacamole and I did enjoy the margarita as well. read more

I took my wife, daughter and an adult friend of my daughter's to Casa Mexicana in Rhinelander, Wisconsin yesterday. We are all long time residents of the area and know this restaurant well. This meal was yesterday, Sunday, February 6th in the afternoon. We were seated immediately around 5 PM in the dining room on the east side of the building, just to the left of the doors opening into the bar area. In anticipation of dinner, we ordered a round of drinks and some appetizers, then our dinner orders. While waiting for food to arrive we continued to hear an ever-louder disturbance coming from the bar that included very loud laughing, laced with profanity of the worst kind from a small group of people in the bar, obviously inebriated and over-served. At first, we chose to ignore the intoxicated, obnoxious patrons, but as our dining room began to gain more customers, totaling about 14 including young children, I decided enough was enough. I approached what I thought to be a manager, described what was going on, since he seemed oblivious and was told he would take care of it. I returned to our table, while the noise level decreased somewhat, the profanity did not. When I approached wait staff the second time to further complain, remarkably, I was "scolded" by one of the employees who rhetorically asked me, "What is your problem? They are friends of the owner and they are paying customers too!" My young adult, male guest simultaneously had physically walked into the bar area and confronted the perpetrators of the problem, albeit respectfully, asking them to please dial back the noise and profanity, especially with families in the adjacent dining room. By that point our dining experience had been ruined and we were packing up our unfinished entrees when one of the problem people poked his head around the corner and berated our group for having complained. We left without engaging with them verbally and will NEVER go to that restaurant again. The food at this restaurant is mediocre at best, especially when compared to their prior smaller location just down the street. We had all eaten at the former location for many years and had really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, that has all changed now with this new, very large facility in place as a very large restaurant for the area, dwarfing other restaurants nearby. read more

Food - cheap, tastes good, huge portion. Service - TERRIBLE! Took 15 minutes for any waiter to bring us water and then another 10 after that to ask what we wanted to eat. Waiters didn't speak English and never came back to fill our waters during the entire meal. Afterwards, took at least 20 minutes of our card sitting on top of the bill on the table before any of the waiters took it. They looked at it numerous times. We paid and left disappointed. This place is amazing. We just moved to the area from a suburb of Chicago and as much as we have loved fish fry and a good burger we miss the ethnic food. I absolutely love this place. Everything about it is incredible. To name a few good things, the decorations are gorgeous, I've never seen a restaurant with so much art. I love spending time looking at it all. The waiters are always kind and I've never had a bad experience with any of them (and I've been there many times). The salsa and the tortilla chips they serve as an appetizer are always perfect! The salsa always has the right consistency and is never too spicy. All of this is great, of course, but the FOOD! The food is absolutely incredible! Everybody that I've ever eaten with here has said the same. My favorite meal to get is the Vegetarian Enchilada and it's perfect. I'm getting hungry just from thinking about it. I'd recommend this restaurant to pretty much anybody. I've been here many, many times and the only issue I've ever had was the waiter forgot to give me a refill after I asked for one, and that was barely an issue. We had high hopes for this place, but alas, they were dashed. So, the gent serving as a host pointed us back at a group of tables, we took the one he seemed to mean, but as he never spoke...anyhow. He asked what we wanted to drink, and I ordered a cup of coffee. He came back with that, and with water and soda for my wife and son. Slammed the coffee down so hard it enough sloshed out to about fill the saucer. Walks away without a word. I guess the phony gold Rolex is supposed to be statement enough. A server brought out a basket of chips and a carafe of salsa. The chips weren't bad, but the salsa was basically ketchup. After pouring about a half bottle of the 'hot sauce' on the table into it, it was vaguely spicy. We all ordered Tacos Asada, and they were fairly mediocre. Not bad, not good. We ordered 'soft-shell', is that a thing? Is it to differentiate from Taco Bell and Jack-in-the-Box??? So yeah, the tacos came with one, very commercial, tortilla, and some pretty insipid steak. Oh, it was decent enough meat, but had about enough spice and flavor to be, say, decent McDonald's. We sat for close to twenty minutes after we finished eating, hoping to catch our waiter...naahhhh-I think he retired. Finally got our check when we stood up and started to leave. The service at the register was great, too...the lady was unsmiling, unspeaking, wouldn't meet the eye, in short, everything a good hostess should be. I guess the simple fact that Rhinelander HAS a 'Mexican' (style) restaurant should be good enough, but for the Gods sake, if you run a Mexican place, at least try to make the food a bit more Mexican tasting! I spend a good bit of time in Mexico, and am originally from Chicago, so I've eaten Mexican food once or twice-this ain't it. We had planned on going back to give it another shot, see if maybe we caught it on an off day, but after the performance put-on by the hostess on our way out, forget it. Not on a bet. There are places in Wausau where you can get better tacos for less money, we'll do the driving. Sorry to be so negative, but this one really did earn it. read more

We stopped here for an early dinner. The service was very good. I ordered the fajitas with shrimp, chicken and steak. It was the best fajitas of any Mexican place I've eaten at the last couple of years. The steak and onions were just s little dark/crispy, yum. The dish had very good flavor, well above average. We were really hungry and ate the chips quickly and they brought us more. We thought the chips were also better than average. The margaritas were about 3 and a half stars. We shared a fried ice cream and we agreed that it was the best one to date. The flour tortillas were ok- they were not home made. Decor was very colorful and comfortable, perhaps a bit too colorful for my taste. Overall it was a very good meal, we would go back again in a heartbeat. read more

As a Mexican place in Rhinelander, I'd give it 2 stars. As a Mexican place in general, it's awful. Overpriced compared to other Rhinelander options. Horribly bland food (especially the salsa) that all tastes the same. These guys are taking advantage of a community with no grasp of authentic Mexican cuisine. read more
