The restaurant from the street and stairs is so dark it actually looked closed. But you can check its hours on line to make sure it's open. The sign on the door said it would be closed Tuesdays to give their employees a day off, but not sure if that is started yet or not. The food is tasty. The flavors are there. I had a ground beef enchilada and chili relleno combination. Many restaurants in the valley are making their rellenos by scrambling their eggs and dipping the chili in the scrambled egg which turns the dish into a rather tough, hard omelet. The right way is to separate the whites from the yolks, beat the whites into a foam, stir the yolks separately, and FOLD the yolk into the foamed whites carefully so the whites are not broken. Then dip the chili into it and fry. This creates the original style chili relleno which has a specific, lighter bite to it. I try rellenos everywhere I go, looking for the original style. This one failed. I'd come back but not for the rellenos. (Sad face...) read more

Wanted some Mexican food on a Thursday and decided to try this place. Unfortunately, what a let down it was in terms of both food and service. First, the service: I asked if they could do a steak and shrimp instead of steak and chicken fajitas for two to which they said yes. However, we received steak and chicken instead. We informed our waiter right away and he said he would bring the shrimp out shortly. We assumed the shrimp would be comped since it was his mistake and we would just tip him extra as a thank you for the inconvenience. However, the bill included an unexpected charge for all three proteins--adding nearly $10 to our total without prior notice and consent from us. The real issue was the lack of communication: staff said they could accommodate my request to create a steak and shrimp combination but clearly didn't understand it, and the extra charge wasn't known until the bill came. Second: the food was mediocre at best. The meat was mangled, overcooked, dry and even had a slightly sour aftertaste. Overall: There is no reason for anyone to spend their money on an establishment that serves unremarkable food and charges customers for something they didn't order. read more

I wasn't sure about this restaurant at first due To the yelp reviews that were either five stars or one star. Then I read that the one star yelp reviews and realized they are just complainers. Casa Mexico serves basic Mexican food; filling and very good. The size is a smaller serving size that you receive at most Mexican restaurants but the price is lower as well. The serving for one was more than enough for one person with leftovers. The chips were amazing. Fresh out of the oven, lightly salted with a good crunch. Probably the best Mexican restaurant tortilla chips I have had. The service was prompt, the staff were nice and the food was food. Absolutely zero complaints. Bottom line is this place great for the price. Service is good, food is well made and good with solid portion sizes(no dry chicken). My kids and I were looking forward to a last dinner out before the weather turned. We arrived at Casa Mexico to find it mostly empty, spoke with a server and chose a table outside. Waited forever for menus. Menus were delivered and server disappeared for a while. Finally got to order drinks. Asked for no salt on my margarita; it was delivered with salt AND chili on the rim. Fine, I used the straw to drink around it. Later had to flag down another server to ask for a kid's menu. Had to flag them down again to place our food order. FORTY minutes later, we still hadn't received our enchilada and quesadilla! Found a server to ask, and he presented us with cold, coagulated food a few minutes later. The melted cheese on my enchilada had cooled and hardened. The inside of it was cold. At this rate it was dark outside and we were chilly and starving, so we just ate fast to get out of there. When it was time to pay, the server told me our food had been prepped in to-go boxes and left to sit for god knows how long. No apology, no discount, no free dessert, they couldn't even pop it in the microwave before bringing it out to us. And the place was empty - no excuse for such lousy service. read more

So good. We come here at least three times a month. Service is always excellent, and the food is heads & shoulders above what we've found at the other local Mexican food choices. Just the queso and a big Dos Equis does wonders after a hard day. When we first moved to Boise from Texas we weren't impressed with Casa Mexico, but it's very apparent that they've upgraded the quality of their ingredients and the results are definitely showing. If you had a bad experience years ago I'd highly recommend giving them another try. Also has a great patio for people watching on nice days. I am disgusted with the service tonight, I go down and pull up a chair to sit with some friends and was getting a bean dip returned because it didint look right and she immediately told me to leave. Ok, here's the dealio: Everything began wonderfully. Their Hyde Park location is fantastic. The service was phenomenal. We were greeted upon entrance and their servers were friendly and prompt for the duration of our meal. They served us bean dip AND salsa with the complimentary tortilla chip basket (yay!). Then things began to go downhill. As I sat taking in the ambiance (very Denny's-like booths and lighting), I noticed that they still had their Christmas decorations up (it was March)--not a huge deal, but kind of odd. Then my dining companion's margarita was served weak and watery (he complained, so I tried it as well and yep--sad and sorry sobriety in a glass). The entrees (chili relleno for me and an enchilada combo plate for my dining companion) were lacking any kind of memorable flavor at all. The rice and beans were just so-so. I live nearby and so really wanted to love this place! Unfortunately, no matter how great the location and service--it just didn't quite make up for the lack of flavor. read more

I first visited Casa Mexico when I moved to Boise in the summer and it's location is a great place to sit outside and have a few margaritas. The staff were friendly and very helpful! I wasn't super impressed with the food (being from around San Antonio, Texas I'm a harsh critic) but it's definitely a place I like to still order from in Boise to satisfy that craving. Their food is fresh and just seems to lack in the flavoring of the meat. Because of COVID I've only ordered delivery since which limits my review of food presentation. Typically I order the Chile con queso which is a white cheddar base with tomatoes and peppers. This is actually pretty good compared to other restaurants! I also order the beef enchilada and two taco entree. I've had the chicken version before which wasn't as good so I recommend to go with beef! Like I said above, the food is fresh but seems to slightly miss the mark for that robust flavor in the meats. On the other hand, the food isn't greasy not give you that oily feeling afterwards! I'd say if you're looking for something closeby in the Boise area with reasonae prices (even better if the weather is nice) to definitely check it out! I also recommend this place for delivery. I grew up in a Texas border town and grew up traveling to Mexico pretty frequently. This place was very underwhelming. The rice was over cooked and seemed as if it had been reheated 5 times over. The refried beans were a weird purple-ish color. The ground beef is the strangest I've ever seen -- it's almost as if it's thrown in the blender and so mushy. My fiancé had the fish tacos, which were also very flavorless and bland. We are pretty sure that's what made him very sick when we got home. I'm all for supporting small, local restaurants but they REALLY have to step their game up if they want to call themselves a Mexican restaurant because this is not a good nor accurate representation of what Mexican food should be. I've come here twice now, and both visits were motivated by the same thing--a chilly autumn day and a craving for some hot tortilla soup! The Vibes: Casa Mexico is an inconspicuous little joint in the Hyde Park neighborhood. You have to walk down a set of stairs to get to the front door of this restaurant. Upon entering, you get this cozy/family-owned restaurant feel. It's really quiet and mellow in here. I actually can't recall any music being on in the background, although I'm sure there was some. They also have lots of booth seating available--perfect for cozying up on a chilly autumn day and slurpin' on some tortilla soup! The Food: Upon being sat, you are instantly greeted with water, chips, house-made salsa, and bean dip #PraiseHands. The salsa is pretty spicy (but so yummy), however, if you need something milder, just ask! They are happy to accommodate your taste buds. (Fun fact that I learned during my last visit here: their salsa is spiciest in the summer months because the peppers they use are spiciest then. I had no idea that a pepper's heat changes in accordance with the season! So wild.) Anyways, I love their salsa...and bean dip, super tasty! But the whole point of my trip here was a bowl of that tortilla soup. Floating around in a well-flavored broth is shredded chicken, veggies, cheese, avocado, and tortilla strips. I am a fan of this soup, but my only suggestion would be that they allow the customer to add the tortilla strips and avocado themselves. Since the soup is so hot, they sort of disintegrate into the soup really quickly--which still tastes yummy, it's just not very visually pleasing. Service: We had the sweetest waitress named Jessica. I've been here a few times, was never really impressed. However I returned again since I love the cozy feel inside on a rainy evening, and the free salsa and bean dip are a big plus! Came in the other night and ordered two cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. Rice and beans were pretty good, but the cheese enchiladas were inedible. For reasons I will probably never understand they substituted cheddar or Mexican blend cheese in the enchiladas with Something like american cheese or velveeta. It was a waste of money, not to mention a total bastardization of cheese enchiladas. As much as I love the atmosphere of this cozy basement eatery, I don't know if I'll be back any time soon. read more

Nice location and friendly staff but I will probably not be returning. There was nothing inherently bad about Casa Mexico but food was very bland and small portion sizes for the price. I ordered the two taco combo ($10.75) and the meat portions were very stingy. Not to mention there was barely any beans or rice which is the cheapest thing on the plate! Over-priced, poor service, and Taco Bell-quality food. The tortillas they use must be from the discount/closeout bin at WinCo. I ordered Carne Asada (their special for the day) and got poop-brown guacomole, putrid yellow and brown cilantro and tomatoes in the pico de gallo, and the beans were spread so thin on the plate it looked like brown water with bean shells spread throughout. While the steak was cooked merely satisfactory, the rice they served (nearly as thinly spread as the beans) was littered with large burnt chunks of rice. For a single person at a table, it took me an hour and a half from the time i walked in to the time i had to ask for a check (which I had to ask for three times). In that time, I was able to order one single beer--which i pointed at the tabletop ad featuring their DRAFT beers and they still gave me a BOTTLE of something I had never had before and refused to refund or give me what I explicitly ordered--one basket of chips--and they charged me the mandatory $1.50 for a half basket of chips and a half dish of salsa--and one entree. There were only three other tables occupied in the entire restaurant and I was grossly overlooked, treated poorly, and received insanely small portions of food. This meal (one Carne Asada and a SINGLE BOTTLE OF BEER) cost me $19.09. I live within walking distance from this restaurant and love nearly every mexican establishment i've ever been to, but i will never, ever, ever, ever, ever eat here again. I hope that these current franchise owners get kicked out and a real restaurant can move in. Hyde Park needs more quality restaurants otherwise it will continue floundering like a fish out of water with its hiked-up prices and low quality of product. read more

This is an update.. my last review from 2011 still has merit.. however: As the weather has warmed up my friend and I have found that you risk a bit if you choose to sit inside/downstairs when the outdoor service area is full. Though we were seated promptly, our orders taken and chips/dip/salsa brought quickly- we seemed to be forgotten after that. I eventually had to tag the server as she walked by and ask that our food be boxed to go so we could get back to work on time- and we barely got an apology for the trouble. Also.. NO clamshell containers.. my nachos were put on a plate and covered with foil. which caused mucho condensation resulting in soggy chips by the time I got back to my desk at work. Casa Mexico is located in a cool little basement space in Hyde Park, which I liked off the bat. Easy to find, too! I love that they even have outdoor seating, and the murals tie it together. The service was okay, nothing special. You're welcomed with chips, salsa, and retried beans - yum! According to the menu, though, it costs money to get a second basket. Boo... I had a piña colada and it was pretty good, but the last piña colada I had was with real coconut while in Mexico, so it's hard to compete. We both ordered our "usuals." Chicken chimichanga for me! The food was good, but nothing special. Pretty standard Americanized Mexican food. Might be back if I'm in the mood, but.. eh. read more

OK, we're new in town. We're still in boxes and we wanted a quick, easy and inexpensive dinner with the kids. Only $1.95 for kids on Sundays. Sounds great. The dining room is downstairs and very cool in the summer heat. The basket of chips and salsa are great. Things are looking good. Then I ordered the chicken mole, on their suggestion: the meat was in little bite sized pieces and the mole tasted like it could have come from a Chinese restaurant that uses too much sugar in its sauce. And the chicken meat was tough, not fresh. My husband's taco combo plate was very meh, as well. if you come here, I would only come for the chips and salsa and the very reasonably priced pitchers of beer.
