Today, my husband and I drove down from San Francisco and were warmly greeted by Katya and Deborah. Within thirty seconds we felt right at home. After describing the poufs we'd spotted on their website, we were escorted into the warehouse and shown the samples we'd come to see--were able to browse more beautiful inventory that filled the shelves--and were introduced to other members of the Casablanca Marketing family, who ultimately oversaw the preparation of our order. Sitting at home writing this review (with my feet propped up on one of our new poufs), I couldn't be happier with the service we received--and looking forward to our next visit to Casablanca Market (an entirely woman-owned business). If you've ever dreamed of visiting Morocco or cooking like a Moroccan chef or decorating your home/dining table in the most faaaaabulous and exotic manner....save yourself the 12 hour flight and mosey on down to Casablanca Market in Mountain View. I had shopped there before years ago...but you know how it goes, you work in an area, frequent those shops alot...then you don't work in the area anymore and spots sort of fall of your retail radar, dig? WELL...a darling friend got me a gift certificate for the monthly cooking class at Casablanca and re visiting felt like coming home! The store is gorgeous, with Moroccan home furnishings, mirrors, lighting...gorgeous fabrics and pillows that would make "rock any casbah" (Yeah, I was just waiting to fit that line in = ) AND tons and tons of spices...that remind one of a trip to a Moroccan spice market (or that grand daddy of all spice markets outside the Grand B'zaar in Istanbul but that's a story for another time) So we settle in (there were 9 people in the class) and Katia, the owner of the shop AND our intrepid chef/instructor for the day! The goal was to learn how to make 3-4 authentic Moroccan dishes AND then feast on them!!! Here's what we prepared: Sesame seed crusted Lamb Meatballs with sweet harissa yogurt sauce Tagine of Moroccan Chicken Couscous Salad with chickpeas and dates Roasted ginger cake with this honey lemon fruit topping AND of course, Mint Tea to drink..Mint tea IS the housewine of Morocco! Suffice to say, Katia is a very delightful, patient teacher AND an amazing cook!!! Her teaching style was perfect...and I've been to classes at Greystone, the Culinary Academy...even Jacques Pepin...and she was right up in those ranks...with technique, demo-ing but also stepping back and letting us do our thing! Like most cooking/food prep...sometimes a little improv can lead to some very delcious outcomes! I could go on and on about the store, the cooking class...access to amazing Moroccan spices and tagines...oh and GORGEOUS tea glasses that I imagine are right out of "1001 Nights"....I bought 6 sets...2 to keep, 4 as gifts....people are blown away by how gorgeous they are! I accidentally ran into this place when I lived in Mountain View several years ago and instantly fell in love with the place. The exotic but accessible decor. The focus on hard-to-find ingredients. And most of all, Katia, the owner and entrepreneur who opened the shop and has since been finding new ways to help bring her culture to the people of Silicon Valley. In addition to stocking up on spices and cookware, I've also had the pleasure of cooking with Katia in one of her cooking classes. I highly recommend checking these out. Years have passed, and now I live in San Francisco, but I find myself still coming back to see what new stock the store has. From the moment I walked into Katia's store I knew I was in the right place. I had driven down from San Francisco after looking over her informative website and needed to buy Argan oil and orange blossom water (I'm sure I could have found these items in the city or online, but I was under a time crunch). They had plenty of both items in stock. When she found out that I was in the midst of preparing a Moroccan dinner for friends Katia asked about menu and was genuinely interested in what I was going to make. She had me sit down and takes careful notes about making the perfect pot of mint tea which turned out great! She believes in sourcing her products directly from the manufacturers as much as possible under fair trade conditions. With her great enthusiasm about all her products and the warm hospitality she showed me I will definitely go back. For those who quibble about pricing, this is not a chain store selling items made in Asia and compared to the cost of traveling to Morocco on a whim, nothing was unreasonable. If price is your only criterion, I suggest shopping at Walmart. read more

I can't say enough about this wonderful specialty shop. My son and I we're strolling downtown Mtn. View a couple of days ago when I noticed the signage out front. I said, "Let's check it out!", and we were really glad that we did. The owner, Katia (sp?) was very gracious and clearly an expert in Moroccan fare. She spent about an hour helping us pick out several hard to find spices and ingredients. Coco Chanel the cat was adorable and amused us with her antics throughout our visit. The cooking utensils and selection of spices are to die for and we'll revisit this shop soon to browse the various home items including lovely leather lamps. We purchased a terrific Moroccan cookbook we used tonight with our special seasonings we purchased at the shop. Extra yum! All and all, we had a thoroughly enjoyable hour shopping and chatting with the owner and are very satisfied with our experience and purchases. If you've ever or never enjoyed Moroccan food, you must visit this jewel. Definitely worth a drive even if you don't live close to Mountain View. read more

Rented poufs, carpets, Berber pillows, candles from this spot for my Moroccan themed baby shower in March and it was a huge success! The hostesses of my shower got tons of compliments on the decor! Katia was super helpful. We picked up and dropped off the decor back to Casablanca Market very easily. I hear they deliver. The poufs and other decor were beautiful, authentic and of high quality. They have great stuff here you can't find anywhere else: preserved lemons, spices, and other specialty ingredients for tagines and other Moroccan cuisine. The owner asked me what I was preparing and gave me a couple cooking tips, telling me "I want my food to taste as good as possible!" My only complaint is that their hours aren't very convenient, and when I went there last, it was closed and I had to call a number to get someone to come out and open the shop 15 minutes later. read more

I love this store!! I bought two Moroccan brown and gold pillow poufs from them a year ago and just returned to buy a beautiful all-gold one today. Their prices are best in the Bay Area and they are incredibly kind and gracious people. I can't recommend them enough. No attitude or pretension as u sometimes get in the San Francisco import stores, just beautiful quality objects and loving Heart's! Katia had a pop up station at West Elm Palo Alto, which I frequently visit. Fell in love with her large-size pillows (the pillows at West Elm are set sizes and none of them are very large), which added to the variation in sizes of the pillows on our couch. Her pillows are super soft and comfortable (and in my opinion better quality than the West Elm ones). I love that her designs have a "cultural" touch to it giving it more character. Their leather poufs are also very well stitched, sturdy, and beautiful. Upon seeing it, it reminded me that I had two leather poufs at home that needed to be filled, which I later dropped off for Katia to take back. I visited her warehouse to pick up my poufs and they did a fantastic job filling it to the perfect size (without putting too much strain on the stitching), and using recycled materials. I had been looking for an *unglazed* tagine for a few years. While in S.F., I made a special trip down to Casablanca. The owner quickly dispelled my fears and helped me understand I really wanted a glazed tagine. She sold me a wonderful tagine with beautiful decorations. Thank you to Casablanca Market for coming to our aid on such short notice, for our grand fund-raising extravaganza. The pieces Katia provided gave our event drama, beauty, and light, turning what would have been very nice, into something extravagantly beautiful. We rented the palace lanterns, and a number of smaller ones, filling them with candles, that reflected off the brass tables (also rented). The tables were surrounded by multi-colored leather poufs, and flanked with hooka lamps. It was truly beautiful, and yes, well attended. Thank you again Katia. read more

I have not been in the store yet, so I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Katia. I can say that Casablancamarket.com is a great place to order online as well. I needed a tangia on very short notice. I have a recipe that that originates from the Abruzza region of Italy. Interestingly enough, the recipe is cooked using an earthenware vessel nearly identical to a tangia. It's called spezzantino dimaiale alla'abruzzese; a meat stew with pork, onions, tomatoes, and sweet & hot peppers. I was hoping that I might prepare it for my Italian language group when we meet at my home just one week away but was apprehensive about the short time left, knowing how Internet orders typically take at least a week. I chose to order anyway and was surprised to have it delivered by FedEx THE VERY NEXT DAY! I nearly fell over when I opened the door and the driver was standing there with it in hand.. Thank you, Katia, for the timely processing and expedited shipping. Also, I appreciated the quick response I received to my emailed questions. You were on it within minutes of its sending and I had the answers I needed right away. I immediately got my tangia soaking in water to start the curing process as the instructions stated and I should be able to try it out several days before I do the serious cooking for my group. Much appreciation! The instruction sheet included with my tangia indicates that Katia has Moroccan cookbooks as well. I'll be sure to check them out. I haven't been in the store yet, however I have it on my "to do" list for the next time I'm on the Peninsula. I've got to meet Katia in person! She certainly made a big hit with me regarding the delivery and customer service. The tangia arrived totally unscathed. How could it not, given the manner with which it was lovingly and meticulously packed! It is an artfully made piece. I think I'll leave it out on my countertop as a decoration and conversation piece. And just to be clear - I am not related to nor have I met Katia. I just think that her service orientation is great and deserves mention. She gets extra points in my book! read more

I have been looking for a place like this since visiting Morocco 10 years ago !! Moroccan crafts are so beautiful, but shipping cement tables back from Morocco to California was too expensive. Katya had mosaic tile tables and fountains in her store and I have a boyfriend with a truck so I was able to get a beautiful 47' wide tile table and a small fountain for my garden. Majorelle Garden in Marakesh is one of the most beautiful places in the world and now I can use that inspiration to create a Moroccan garden in my San Francisco yard. I first discovered Moroccan culture at Epcot Center at Disney World in Orlando, FL. I had always enjoyed middle eastern food but he handcrafts were wonderful too. In the little souk next to the restaurant they sold pottery, but the best plates were glued to the wall and not for sale. If you tried to pull them off the wall like I did, mourn no longer. Casablanca Market has them for sale and you can buy all you want., no crowbar needed. Did you know that Spain, Portugal, and Southern Italy were Moorish colonies for over 600 years? All the wonderful tiles and pottery, wrought iron, and stucco and tile roofed architecture that we think of as Spanish, Italian or Mexican were brought to Southern Europe by the Moors. Next time you enjoy paella and flan remember the Moors brought rice and sugar cane to from Southeast Asia., too. read more

I'm just mad about Saffron Casablanca Market is selling Al-Jucar Saffron packaged with a tiny mortar and pestle, so that you can grind this yummy spice fresh as you need it. It's wonderful on vegetables, fish, rice: you name it! read more

Imagine yourself walking into a bazaar filled with Moroccan furniture, delicately painted tea glasses, shining brass tables on carved and painted wooden legs, inlaid or painted wooden stools and side tables, Moroccan teas and sauces and rose petal jams, fabrics, carpets, Berber pillows...and then, as your senses begin to take in all of this richness, a gentle voice calls out from the back of the store, "Welcome! Would you like some tea?" And then a graceful young lady comes forward with warm, sweet mint tea in a painted glass for you...I feel transported to another world, where friendship and beauty are the norm. I cannot recommended highly enough the good people and incredible variety of wonderful items available at Casablanca Market. The entire time I was in the store the owner was on the phone, it was hard to believe I could walk into a small store front and not be greeted. HORRIBLE customer service. I ordered bowls and glasses, half of the bowls arrived broken, half of them very, very sloppy paint job. When i complained about the bowls being sloppy they refused to let me return my product. I ordered the items 2 months ago and now every single item is chipped or broken. Do not shop from here if you value your money and want quality craftsmanship. I saw all of these items myself in Morocco and the quality is much better. Casablanca market used to be in Mountain view. I am so sad to find out they moved to Newark. It is a very special shop because they have hand made pieces of furniture crafted with the special Morrocan style. They also have other stuff for home. My favorite is the Morrocan poufs.
