I really appreciate this company. They were polite, considerate and worked really hard to do what I needed. I have had some very interesting people try to prune my fruit trees. They have done things like - butchered my trees, done a very strange pruning that did almost nothing, made my trees look awful, I could go on and on.... Our experience was a disappointment. Over budget, under delivered, 9 months later many of our plants are dead because they were planted under the roof line. The consultation was practically the equivalent of hand writing some plant names on a napkin and charging a couple hundred of dollars for that. It was NOT something that another company could run away with by any means. Still, out of trust, we decided to continue down the path because they seemed like nice guys and we had little choice, in fact, even they could not make out their notes or work according to the "plan" they had made only weeks earlier during the project. The price quoted turned out to not be enough to finish the job nor do quite a bit of work on the "plan". While they did extras in other areas it was not the equivalent work. We paid more than we agreed to and they did less. They apologized for this but it still sucks. I've since contacted another landscaping business and learned the bark they got is to heavy for our plants, plants are too far under the roof line, and they even misidentified some of the plants they planted. Not a good experience on any level. When I have inquired to get them to fix their errors I'm repeatedly been met with "we will have to charge you" - if we come by. At first it was, "when we are in the neighborhood" and later it was "this is our rate". No thanks. I'm done trusting these guys. Please learn from our experience. We had recently had a successful home remodel and just didn't do our due diligence with this business because we were riding high after that other experience. read more

BEWARE - DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY! I ordered 3 plants from their website last October. They plants were expensive and the shipping fee was outrageous. They withdrew the funds from my payment source immeadiately and I waited patiently for my plants. Now it is April and I have heard nothing from them. I called. They said there were some problems but that it should ship out right away and that they would provide me with shipping info. A week and a half from that phone call - crickets. When I had called them a week and a half ago they said that they had never meant their company to sell plants online, yet when I went back to their shopping page, added plants to a cart and proceeded through the "check-out" up to where you enter the payment infomation, it appeared that they had done nothing to remove the "ordering online" option and seemed to be perfectly happy to take money from innocent customers with no intention of ever sending the plants that were ordered. read more

it's a small landscaping firm. If you want 100 guys working overnight to finish a project then you should go elsewhere. If you do choose do go here, this is what you'll get. A team of people who think about the project they are undertaking. The building of your lawn will be a team effort. That means Michael will go back and forth with you to make sure your vision is feasible and that he understands it. I love that his team is thoughtful about how the plants are treated. The job is thorough... specifically it is exactly what you've agreed upon. When changes come up, he lets you know when something is beyond the quote, then it just gets done. He is upfront about his schedule, so I have always known where my project is in the lineup. His bid matched the final price. the only additions to the final bill were from the extra stuff that I added to the project. :D He even saved me a TON of money by working with other landscapers to procure mulch (shredded from tree trimmers) for a big project. They did a decent job of putting together a plan for my yard, but the plants that were delivered were diseased. It took several weeks before they took the diseased plant back (they wouldn't believe me) and now all of my already established blueberries are effected. My My service berries also came with rust. I wish that I had not used them to source my plants as I'm not made up of time or money to continue to deal with what their plants have brought into my garden. Buyer beware! read more

Our experience has been very positive. Michael has been responsive to our concerns, and has made sure we were always satisfied with what we received. We have used CEL for two different purposes. First, about 2 years ago, we used them to do a bunch of landscaping work in our yard. Overall, we were very happy with the work delivered. We knew what we wanted before Michael started working with us (a 60 foot long stone path and a stone patio). Michael worked with us on the specifics of the plan, and with figuring out the appropriate supplies. Michael and his crew worked diligently, and got it done in a reasonable amount of time. While this work was going on, we had him do a little other landscaping work - plant a few new trees we had purchased. And, in a change of the original plan, we had him build us two raised garden boxes. For the 2nd purpose, we have used CEL's Community Supported Plant Starts (kind of like a CSA for edible plant starts). With that program, we have been very happy. We sign up at the beginning of the season, and several times through the spring and summer we get plant starts delivered. A very high percentage of the starts have grown into plants we have been able to eat. read more

I had CEL re-do my backyard, to remove everything the builder planted, and put in all edible plants and two tall raised beds. They did the work in a timely manner, and most of the plants are doing ok. But I felt that they were WAY OVERPRICED and that they worked rather slowly, which is relevant since I was paying $80 and hour for two guys. Before the work was completed, they were very responsive to emails and phone calls; however, once I made final payment, they STOPPED ANSWERING ALL EMAILS. I had questions about plants, and a few other things, and I never heard back from them, despite emailing multiple times. Also, I made a last minute change to the backyard and had them cover it in cedar chips. I meant for them to cover the areas that were just dirt, and said as much. But, they covered (killed) all the ground cover, which I had been patiently weeding and watering for three years to get it to cover most of the open space in my backyard. Also, the strawberry plants were planted about an inch below the surrounding soil. They never responded to me emails about the drainage problem and mushrooms that over took the plants, and never fixed the problem. SO, IF YOU USE THEM FOR LANDSCAPING, MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS DONE EXACTLY HOW YOU WANT IT BEFORE YOU MAKE FINAL PAYMENT, BECAUSE ONCE YOU DO, YOU MAY NEVER HEAR FROM THEM AGAIN!! As for the cummunity starts, several of the plants died, despite the fact that they put them in the beds ands built the irrigation system. And they recently treated all of my starts for aphids; however, they've REFUSED TO RESPOND to my emails - I've sent 3 in the past two weeks asking what they used. So I have no idea if I can put them in my all organic beds, because I have no idea what chemical they used to kill the aphids. The kale had a weird white residue and lots of dead bugs stuck to the underside of the leaf. I don't know of any organic treatment that would cause this. But, like I said, they've been totally non-responsive when I've asked. I gave them 2 stars rather than just one because I like what they're trying to do, and I thought they did an ok job up to the point that I made final payment, except for killing all the ground cover and planting the strawberries in depressions. Basically, I really want to like them. But I will never use them again and i would never recommend them to a friend. read more

Michael and his crew redid our front yard several years ago, including replacement of the grass with a wide variety of edible plants - berries, herbs, etc. Also installed a rain garden. Since then we've had them come by for occasional maintenance of the yard. All the plants are well-established at this point and we've been super happy with the product. The rain garden has worked great, we've harvested a lot of food from the yard, and we constantly get compliments on the way the yard looks. They've been responsive to our requests and have always charged a reasonable fee for the work. We've been very satisfied and would definitely use them for future work. read more

I am a master gardener with a degree in sustainable ecology. My verdict: Pathetic. Proof that being the first does not mean being the best. The only thing Michael seems to excel at is marketing, meaning putting flyers everywhere and getting the CEL name into various publications. Sadly, the delivery of goods and services lack any planning, and are sub-par. He seems to be enthusiastic but is coming from 0 (read: ZERO) experience with sustainable or edible gardening, or it would seem, any type of gardening. This shows in the CSPS program (vegetable plant starts picked up quarterly). What you will get are late, tiny starts that have never been thinned and will prove unviable over the growing season. The size of the plants delivered will alarm you upon receipt, and you will be correct- you should have received plant starts that small at least 1-2 months earlier for them to be at all productive. Pick-up dates are regularly pushed back and email announcements are sent out about crop failures and infestations in their greenhouse. What's more, this company has a revealingly high turn-over rate of employees. I know a few personally who have fled under the mismanagement and disarray perpetuated by Michael and his business blunders. One ex-employee was called almost 2 years later and questioned as to what was installed in a particular lawn. Yes, this means that Michael did work in someone's yard and never kept records. Others have walked out in disgust leaving this company perpetually short-handed. This company owes me a refund, which is why I am speaking out here to warn others. No emails are returned and calls are ignored. As I see from previous reviews there is a definite hit-or-miss ratio of client satisfaction. For me it was 100% a miss. As someone highly educated in this field I was intrigued by the CSPS idea, and I think under the guidance of someone with experience of any horticulture whatsoever, any education in plant biology whatsoever and any business acumen whatsoever, it would be a raging success. You will not find any of those with Cascade Edible Landscapes. read more

The hard-scaping exceeded our expectations and the yard is thriving. The low maintenance areas have proven to be that and the annual food crop sections have worked out well. read more
