Coming here to get empanadas and baked goods . I've spread the word to friends . I found the stinginess of the head lady underwhelming. If I don't ask for aji they don't give it, same thing with the napkins , and lastly I thought I ordered drip coffee so I went up for another small cup and she made me feel awkward about filling it up again . Will need to start making these at home as I'll never be coming back . Sad. Colombians are not tacaños (stingy). read more

If you've ever wondered if you would like Peruvian or Colombian food, this is the place to find out. I had the most delicious baked beef empanada as an appetizer and selected the dish recommended by the hostess for my entree. And even though I don't know what the name of the dish was, I can tell you that the dish delivered great flavor and comfort food vibe. My plate included white rice and beans with beef chunks and pickled red onions on top. I've never had Peruvian or Colombian food before, and this is now one of my new favorite places. Additionally, the restaurant is very clean and well kept. They have 100 out of 100 on inspection. You can taste the love and time that goes into making this delicious food. This Latin restaurant & bakery is located conveniently on Oceanside Blvd & College intersection, in the Rancho Del Oro Gateway Shopping Center EAST of the traffic light. But it is a Very Busy plaza that is typically crowded and has tight-packed parking spaces. The interior is spacious with plenty of space for group seating or intimate dining for 2 in the back. Service is Super-Friendly and welcoming. There is a bakery-side that serves so many beloved pastries and cultural snacks and then there is the diner-side, which has the option for pre-prepped meals or food made-to-order. The owners know the value of making sure that customers have the best dining experiences and will even give you the historical background of food items to help you understand the dishes creation. There's an abundance to choose from and they also have some vegetarian & vegan options available. I personally love their empanadas, which are very flavorful and flaky. Their lomo saltado was also great and so was their fish dish. You can always customize your dishes, mixing & matching items and this makes the menu options very expansive and preferable. We came to check this place out during their soft opening, and the staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. They gave us a rundown of their menu and suggestions on what to try. LOMO SALTADO: One of my favorite dishes and something I always order whenever I dine somewhere that offers it. I paid an extra dollar to upgrade my base to the Columbian rice, which is tomato-based, and I'd say it was definitely worth it! So flavorful! The other upgrade option is the Chaufa rice which is fried rice. My only complaint is that most of the fries were pretty undercooked and centers felt a bit raw. I don't usually like well-done fries but I think they would go well with this dish since the sauces would soften the fries up. EMPANADAS: They have a few different options for their empanadas but we ended up getting the beef, spinach w/ cheese, and fried beef. The fried empanadas take a bit longer to prepare so just keep that in mind. They were all amazing but the fried one really stood out! These make for a great snack. I drowned all my food in their green sauce which is spicy but super delicious and addicting! Overall, great place to stop by for some Latin American food! They were still ironing some things out since we came during the soft opening, but I'm sure things will only get better. I would've liked to grab some more of their baked items to snack on at a later time, but unfortunately we had stopped by on our way to a trip out of town. After a long day running errands, my son and I were famished and I remembered about wanting to try this restaurant (I call it a restaurant even though it looks like a small bakery, you can place your orders at the counter). We stopped in, since it is conveniently located by College and Oceanside BLVD, and upon walking in, plenty of open seating with clean tables and playing non stop great salsa music! As a Miami native with a deep appreciation for the diverse flavors of Latin America, I was thrilled to find such an authentic culinary haven in Oceanside. The menu was a tantalizing tapestry of Peruvian and Colombian delights, making it nearly impossible to choose, there was so much I wanted to try.. but we got Papa Rellenas, a Beef arepa and my son got the Bistec Encebollado. The food was beyond amazing! The steak was very well marinated and seasoned! The woman who took our order, whose name unfortunately escapes me (though I suspect she might be the owner), was incredibly warm and welcoming. Her genuine enthusiasm for the food was infectious, and I couldn't help but gush about how much we enjoyed our meal. I made sure to tell her we'd be back, and soon, with the entire family in tow! We visited during their soft opening and although they're still figuring out some logistics (shortage of ingredients, running out of items), Casera welcomed us with a quick tour of the place and gave detailed descriptions of their biggest hits. Empanada: We tried the spinach with cheese, beef, and fried beef. Each one is pretty big and you can definitely make a meal out of these alone. Our favorite was definitely the fried one, which takes a little time to prepare. The outer layer is so crispy and the inside is juicy with pieces of shredded beef. Lomo Saltado: Ordering is kind of like Chipotle. You pick a base and your protein, which includes beef, tofu, etc. For $1 more you can upgrade your base to Chaufa rice (Peruvian chicken fried rice) or Colombian rice (tomato-based rice). It also comes with two fried eggs. The overall flavor was good, not too salty but some French fries seemed a little undercooked. There's two sauces available for your food, yellow and green. I'm not sure what they're made of but my favorite was the green one. Be warned though, it's really spicy :P! I'm excited to see what the future holds for this restaurant. One of the co-owners was chatting with us and he was saying the menu is only going to get better as they source more authentic Latin American ingredients. read more

I kept seeing eatingoceanside promoting the restaurant, so I've figured as a Colombian that travels to Medellin every month I'd give it a shot. The bakery items are outstanding. I'd give the Pandebono, Pan de Yuca, Bunelos and sweet items all at least 9.2/10. Not only are the bakery items delicious but also a great value. Let's talk empanadas. Also a 9/10. I'm a fan of the baked empanadas popular in Argentina but my family prefers the Colombian traditional Fried empanadas. It's fresh and they fill it up as opposed to other places that barely give you any meat. I recently had some baked Empanadas at the Denver airport for $7 a piece. The empanadas at this restaurant are half the price of those and twice as good. Peruvian food tends to be a better known commodity than Colombian food so if you can't decided what to order, I'd suggest a Peruvian dish, beef empanadas as an appetizer and at least 3-4 different bakery items. Also if you have to order a Colombian dish, I'd recommend their picada which provides excellent variety with meat, potatoes, chorizo, morcilla, yuca, platano maduro and arepas. My one complaint is the arepas. Wasn't a fan but every of item was excellent. I'll definitely return. read more

Wow! What a treat. If you want to try something unique, then I recommend Casera Latin Kitchen. It is a simple bakery/restaurant that offers a wide variety of baked goods, drinks, and entrees. The entrees we ordered included Lomo Saltado & Bandeja Paisa. Both plates were humongous - enough food for 3-4 people. The Lomo Saltado was meaty, crispy, and salt while the Babdeja Paisa was interesting. It consisted of lots of different items that surprisingly paired well together - crispy pork belly, overeasy eggs, rice, plantains, arepa (sweet corn patty), and sausage. We were curious about other items so we tried the best thing ever - guava, cream cheese and caramel bread & cheese bread. The cheese bread was like a jumbo size Brazilian bread. My eyes became hearts like the emoji. The only thing that I was extremely disappointed in was the tres leches. I read so many reviews raving about it, but my share seemed to be extemely dry, which is the opposite of what tres leches is. I couldn't finish it because of how dry it was. Ordered a beef and a chicken baked empanada and the crust was great. It was crispy and had good flavor. The flavors inside were ok but it was hard to tell the difference between the 2. Also ordered pollo saltado and the fries were on the bottom and the chicken and everything on top so they got soggy. Everything had good flavor but I'll ask for the fries separately next time. We were in search of a spot for lunch that had Central or South American food on North County and we hit the jackpot! The casual restaurant in a strip mall is bright, clean and welcoming. The menu is easy to read and the customer service fantastic. We ordered a variety of items to satisfy our need for a taste of home. The portions are generous and my lunch reminded me of "el almuerzo" I enjoyed growing up. We started with two empanadas-one chicken and one beef, both baked. I was excited to see that the filling to pastry ratio was excellent. The pastry was flaky and buttery and a fantastic vessel for the well seasoned fillings. We shared a papa rellena. It was hot, had an abundance of filling and a crispy outside. The pickled red onions added just the right balance to the dish. We shared a pernil lunch entree with rice and French fries. The pork leg had a delicious crust, was fork tender and moist. The rice and fries were a perfect addition. We had no room for dessert but we are already planning our return. This is a great dinning option in North County. My only caution is that you are aware that even though you order at the counter there is a slight wait to receive your food. So happy a Peruvian Colombian restaurant opened in Oceanside!! Now I don't have to drive the Orange County for a fix. Super clean restaurant and friendly owners. Portions are extremely generous (enough for sharing), and there Ali's an awesome abundance of freshly baked goods at very fair prices. We ordered tallarín verde with breaded fish (delish fish!) which Inshared with my 5-year old. He have the food two thumbs up . Mom ordered friend fish with papas and arroz chaufa (very large portions!). We could pass up the sweet baked goods and shared a 3 Mosqueteros pasty which was perfectly light, flaky, and filled with guayaba, cheese, and cajeta. Totally recommend with a cup of their hot coffee. Next time: beef empanadas and causa! Looking forward to returning and supporting this small business. I dare say, Casera Latin Kitchen and Bakery is better than Porto's. There it is. I said it. Alert the President because my wallet is about to cry from all the money I will be spending here. I saw this place a few weeks ago and asked my Brazilian wife if she wanted to go in. She said No, but I knew we had to try it. I stopped in today while she was at home and I knew I'd surprise her with some tasty treats. When you walk in, there are pastries in one case, "salgados" in another case, and then there's a refrigerated case with other desserts and such. I chose what I knew from Brazil which is a combination of doces (sweets) and salgados (salty). Every single thing I bought was amazing! The salgados really hit the spot. We had the chicken and beef empanadas which were delectable. Moist filling of meat mixed with the nice crisp and flaky crust of the shell. When paired with their homemade salsas, it's to die for. The potato balls with meat inside were heavenly, and the cheese balls had me crying tears of joy. Now if that didn't say enough, let me tell you how truly f*cking amazing the pastries are. I've had my fair share of Porto's which is great when you're miles away from South America, but the quality and love that goes into the pastries at Casera is by far better! The pastry dough is flaky and chewy while having a slight sweetness to it. We ate the guava, cheese, and doce de leite pastry while it was still warm and I wanted to yell because my belly and heart were so happy. The little doce de leite cookies are a no brainer -- you'll need to order about 12 of those because they go down the hatch too easily. The woman that assisted me was very kind and helped me pick everything I inquired about. She was happy to explain what was inside and gave further detail about how the pastries are made in-house and fresh daily. If I haven't told you enough, do yourself a favor and just go try Casera already. You will love every bite. read more

What an awesome experience that was :-) First timers there, we got a detailed tour of their different offerings by Luis, who really shows pride into the food he serves. The entire staff was really pleasant and amicable, super helpful with bright smiles that show they love what they do. The place is bright, with a few decor items that keep the room light while still interesting. And the food... wow. It was a total surprise. Finally empanadas in Oceanside I will get again... and again :-) The baked empanada with beef had a very nice balance of savory and sweet with a little spice. The dough was flaky with a nice mouth feel, not heavy at all. The fried one with chicken was awesome. The dough is corn based and it tasted like a very nice fried corn bread. We also tried the arepa which was lighlty sweet, very nice with the main dish. The pollo saltado was super flavorful and came up really hot from the kitchen, which is the way I like my food. The chicken was tender and very flavorful. Could the fries have been crispier? Yeah maybe. But it was still awesome. The pieces of tomatoes with a char on them where really really tasty. We ordered a Colombian tamal and the meat was cold and still frozen, then. staffed potato and the same issue frozen still in the center! The price of the tamal was posted on the glass counter for $12, the menu indicated $13 and the cashier/waiter charged us $ 15, even after we showed him the discrepancy in advertised prices. When I read empanadas I didn't walk, I ran here. My oh my. Delicious! I got the chicken one and the beef one. Both baked tender flaky crusts. And filled to the max! I couldn't eat both they were so full. I also ordered the Papas which was fried and filled with mashed potato and beef. Again delicious and the milder sauce was a great addition. Been here twice this week. Got all the different empanadas. My bf and I preferred the fried ones. The texture and the flavor is more interesting and flavorful than the regular ones. Then came back for lunch and had the lomo saltado with an Inca cola, of course. The beef in the lomo was a little tough so it may need more tenderizing.
